Workshop on Latest Advances in Scalable
Algorithms for Large-Scale Systems (ScalA) 2014
held in conjunction with the
SC14: The International Conference on High Performance
Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis
in cooperation with ACM SIGHPC
November 17, 2014, New Orleans, LA, USA
<http://www.csm.ornl.gov/srt/conferences/Scala/2014>
Novel scalable scientific algorithms are needed in order to enable key
science applications to exploit the computational power of large-scale
systems. This is especially true for the current tier of leading petascale
machines and the road to exascale computing as HPC systems continue to
scale up in compute node and processor core count. These extreme-scale
systems require novel scientific algorithms to hide network and memory
latency, have very high computation/communication overlap, have minimal
communication, and have no synchronization points.
Scientific algorithms for multi-petaflop and exa-flop systems also need
to be fault tolerant and fault resilient, since the probability of faults
increases with scale. Resilience at the system software and at the
algorithmic level is needed as a crosscutting effort. Finally, with the
advent of heterogeneous compute nodes that employ standard processors as
well as GPGPUs, scientific algorithms need to match these architectures
to extract the most performance. This includes different system-specific
levels of parallelism as well as co-scheduling of computation. Key science
applications require novel mathematical models and system software that
address the scalability and resilience challenges of current- and
future-generation extreme-scale HPC systems.
Submission Guidelines
Authors are invited to submit manuscripts in English structured as
technical papers not exceeding 8 letter size (8.5x11) pages including
figures, tables, and references using the IEEE format for conference
proceedings. Submissions not conforming to these guidelines may be
returned without review. Reference style files are available at
<http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/pubservices/confpub/AuthorTools/confer…>.
All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on correctness, originality,
technical strength, and significance, quality of presentation, and
interest and relevance to the workshop attendees. Submitted papers must
represent original unpublished research that is not currently under
review for any other conference or journal. Papers not following these
guidelines will be rejected without review and further action may be
taken, including (but not limited to) notifications sent to the heads
of the institutions of the authors and sponsors of the conference.
Submissions received after the due date, exceeding length limit, or not
appropriately structured may also not be considered. At least one author
of an accepted paper must register for and attend the workshop. Authors
may contact the workshop program chair for more information. Papers
should be submitted electronically at:
<https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=scala20140>.
Full papers will be published with the SC 2014 workshop proceedings
in the IEEE and ACM digital libraries. Selected papers will be invited

*MOTIVATIONÂ *
In todayâ??s Internet age, the concept of social networks is emerging as
both a useful means for understanding software engineering activities
and a key principle for designing software tools. Social networks model
how people communicate, coordinate, cooperate, and develop professional
relationships, which are critical activities for a software development
project. Bringing social networks to the foreground of software
development practice brings a focus to its stakeholders, including
developers, their managers, their support staff, QA analysts,
requirement engineers, and even end users. Social networks include
investigation of both the social organization of the work as well as the
technical information infrastructures. The concept also helps explore
the notion of network-centric organizations that are required to deal
with socio-technical dependencies â?? including handling the relations
and connections between complex software code, systems and subsystems,
requirement and specification documents, etc.
The structure of the social organization often dictates the technical
structure of the product, as stated in Conwayâ??s Law, and is a topic of
ongoing research. Researchers are investigating the interplay of complex
interdependencies among technical artifacts and the people who create
and maintain these artifacts. Others have examined the relationships
between the stakeholders based on qualitative studies and have been
developing software tools to support awareness and trust in global
software development. As a last example, researchers have been studying
the effects of companies moving from hierarchical to network-centric
ways of organizing the work and looking to leverage expertise within
companies.
However, the roles and practices involved with social networks within
software development as well as the technical challenges of social
network technologies within software development are yet to be further
explored. Thus, we seek submissions that employ the concept of social
networks either in studying software development from an empirical
approach or use the concept as a central basis for developing software
tool support, or do both! We seek submissions that investigate how
social network technologies are currently being enacted by software
development practitioners, and how the technology-in-use practices
emerges. Current research on social network in software engineering is
spread across a diverse set of research subareas, and we want to bring
in this diverse set of approaches into this special issue. We encourage
authors to specifically discuss the definition and background of their
particular use of social networks in their work, as well as how the
concept was beneficial for exploring software development practices
and/or how designing collaborative technologies for software development.
*SCOPE & TOPICS OF INTEREST*

Details of the event can be found at:Â www.codecon.net
<http://www.codecon.net/>.
The ability to rapidly deploy micro-level randomized experiments at
population scale is, in our view, one of the most significant
innovations in modern social science. When appropriately theorized and
rigorously applied, randomized experiments are the gold standard of
causal inference and a cornerstone of effective policy. But the scale
and complexity of these experiments also create scientific and
statistical challenges for design and inference.Â
The purpose of the Conference on Digital Experimentation at MIT (CODE)
is to bring together leading researchers conducting and analyzing large
scale randomized experiments in digitally mediated social and economic
environments, in various scientific disciplines including economics,
computer science and sociology, in order to lay the foundation for
ongoing relationships and to build a lasting multidisciplinary research
community.
We have assembled an amazing group of invited speakers from both
industry and academia who have been thinking about and leading the way
in the realm of digital experimentation.

IUI 2015: ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces
Atlanta, GA, USA - March 29-April 1, 2015
http://iui.acm.org/
IUI 2015 is the 20th annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces
community and serves as the principal international forum for reporting
outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces.
IUI is where Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) meets the Artificial
Intelligence (AI) community. We're also very interested in contributions
from related fields, such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive
science, computer graphics, design, the arts, etc.
Why submit to IUI?
At IUI our focus is to improve the interaction between machine
intelligence and human intelligence – other conferences focus on one
side or the other, whereas we address the complex interaction between
the two. Unlike traditional AI, our focus is not so much to make the
computer smart all by itself, but to make the interaction between
computers and people smarter. Unlike traditional HCI, we are more
willing to consider solutions that involve data mining, knowledge
representation, novel interaction paradigms, and new emerging technologies.
The IUI conference brings together people from academia, industry, and
nonprofits and gives you a chance to present and to see work results in
an intimate, focused, and interactive event. It is large enough to be
diverse and lively (we expect over 200 people), but small enough that
you get a chance to talk to all the attendees, see all the posters, and
take in all the presentations. As an ACM conference, papers appear in
the ACM Digital Library and citation indices. There will also be a
journal publication path for long papers. IUI is a single track
conference, so you don't have to miss anything!
IUI topics of interest including, but not limited to:
* User Input
- Processing of multi-modal input
- Natural language and speech processing
- Gestures, eye gaze, face, emotion recognition
* Generation of System Output
- Intelligent visualization tools
- Intelligent generation of user-consumable content
- Big Data/Text summarization and analytics
* Ubiquitous and Wearable Computing
- Intelligent interfaces for ubiquitous computing
- Smart environments and tangible computing
- Smart interaction and interfaces for wearable computing
* Help and Persuasive Technologies
- Intelligent assistants for complex tasks
- Support for collaboration in multiuser environments
- Persuasive technologies in IUI
- Education and learning-related technologies
* Personalization
- User-adaptivity in interactive systems
- Recommender systems
- Modeling and prediction of user behavior
* AI Techniques in IUI
- Interactive Machine Learning
- Planning and plan recognition
- Reasoning in interfaces
* Social Computing
- Affective, social and aesthetic interfaces
- Social networks and collaboration
* IUI Design
- Knowledge-based approaches to user interface design and generation

SUBMISSION
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
* Full and Short Papers (* New Cooperation Model between TiiS and IUI *)
We invite original paper submissions that describe novel user
interfaces, applications, interactive and intelligent technologies,
empirical studies, or design techniques. Accepted papers will be
published in the ACM Digital Library. IUI 2015 especially encourages
submissions on innovative and visionary new concepts or directions for
interface design. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do
expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated
contribution. Full papers (10 pages with unlimited references) should
make substantial, novel and relevant contributions to the field. Short
(4 pages with unlimited references) papers can either contain smaller
contributions, novel ground-breaking ideas, or work in progress.
Accepted full papers will be invited for oral presentation and short
papers either as oral or poster presentation.
Authors of accepted IUI 2015 full papers will have an opportunity to
submit extended versions to the ACM Transactions on Interactive
Intelligent Systems (TiiS, http://tiis.acm.org) for consideration for a
special issue titled "Highlights of IUI 2015". One of the IUI 2015
program chairs will serve as an associate editor who manages the
reviewing for that special issue, and the reviewing schedule will ensure
that it appears in the ACM Digital Library in early 2016, before IUI
2016. (For information on what counts as an appropriate "extension" of a
conference paper for TiiS, see
http://tiis.acm.org/for-authors.html#types-of-submission)
Abstracts Due: October 13, 2014
Full and Short Papers Due: October 17, 2014
* Posters
Posters provide an opportunity for sharing valuable ideas, eliciting
useful feedback on early- stage work and fostering discussions and
collaborations among colleagues. We invite submissions on all topics of
the conference. All submissions should convey a scientific result or
work in progress that is not yet ready to be published as a full length
research paper at a refereed conference. The page limit for poster
papers is 4 pages. Accepted poster papers will appear in the companion
proceedings in the ACM Digital Library.
Submissions Due: January 16, 2015
* Demonstrations
The demonstrations track complements the overall program of the
conference. Demonstrations show implementations of novel, interesting,
and important intelligent user interface concepts or systems. We invite
submissions relevant to intelligent user interfaces and which address,
but are not limited to, the topics of the conference. All submissions
are intended to convey a scientific result or work in progress and
should not be advertisements for commercial software packages. The page
limit for demo papers is 4 pages. Accepted demo papers will be published
in the companion proceedings in the ACM Digital Library.
Submissions Due: January 16, 2015
* Student Consortium
The IUI 2015 Student Consortium provides an opportunity for Masters and
Doctoral students to present and receive feedback about their research
in an interdisciplinary workshop, under the guidance of a panel of
mentors, selected from senior people in the field. We invite students
who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback on their research
to apply for this unique opportunity to share their work with students
in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the field. The
strongest candidates will be those who have a clear topic and research
approach, and have made some progress, but who are not so far along
their research that they can no longer make changes.
Submissions Due: October 31, 2014
* Workshops
Workshops will be held on the first and last day of the conference. We
invite submissions of full-day (6 hours) and half-day (3 hours) workshop
proposals on any of the conference topics.
Workshop Proposals due: September 12, 2014
**** New Cooperation Agreement between the IUI Conference Series and ACM
TiiS ****
The steering committee of the IUI conference series has agreed with the
editors-in-chief of the ACM TiiS on the following forms of collaboration
between the conference and the journal, which will be repeated in
subsequent years:
1. Authors of accepted IUI 2015 full papers IUI 2015 full papers will
have an opportunity to submit extended versions to the ACM Transactions
on Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS, tiis.acm.org
<http://tiis.acm.org>) for consideration for a special issue titled
"Highlights of IUI 2015". One of the IUI 2015 program chairs will serve
as an associate editor who manages the reviewing for that special issue,
and the reviewing schedule will ensure that it appears in the ACM
Digital Library in early 2016, before IUI 2016. (For information on what
counts as an appropriate "extension" of a conference paper for TiiS, see
http://tiis.acm.org/for-authors.html#types-of-submission ).
2. The authors of any TiiS article that has been accepted during the
year 2014 (and that does not represent an extension of a paper presented
at an earlier IUI conference) will have an opportunity to present their
work at IUI 2015 in a presentation slot at least as long as that for an
IUI 2015 short paper.

*Call for Papers: WICSOC 2014 - Social Media, Crowdsourcing, and Public
Health*
*DEADLINE :*
â?¢ Submission: June 15, 2014 â?¢ Acceptance: July 15, 2014Â
â?¢ 4-6 pages IEEE format : Work-in-progress or idea paper or position paper
â?¢ Workshop Date: August 13, 2014
Program co-Chairs: Mohd Anwar, North Carolina A&T State University and
Bernard Fuemmeler, Duke University Medical Center
The 3rd International Workshop on Issues and Challenges in Social
Computing (WICSOC 2014) will take place in conjunction with IEEE IRI
2014, August 13th -15th. The aim of this workshop is to discuss and
exchange ideas on the opportunities and challenges in social computing
systems as they relate to healthcare and public health. We invite papers
from researchers and practitioners working in any aspect of social
computing with research focus on health, healthcare, or public health.
Social Computing Technologies (SCT) offers users opportunities for
connectedness, participation, engagement, collaboration, and
opportunities for offering/receiving social support. These
applications/systems gather abundance of information that when mined and
analyzed will further enrich their services or help researchers
understand many different things including social dynamics of people,
wisdom of crowd, social construction and sharing of knowledge, etc. As a
result, SCT can be leveraged to empower both health professional and
citizens. Online Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, QuitNet are
increasingly being used for health-related purposes. A 2013 online
survey suggests that 59.9% patients used Twitter for increasing
knowledge and exchanging advice and 52.3% used Facebook for social
support and exchanging advice. Novel techniques for information
analysis, reuse, and integration are critical to make sense of health-
related information. Systematic approaches, design principles, and
evaluation strategies need to be researched for developing effective
health-related social computing applications. Other challenges in social
computing include accommodating privacy, security, and trust
expectations of users or separating good information from noise.
We invite research or position papers from researchers and practitioners
working in any aspect of social computing with research focus on health,
healthcare, or public health.
*Example topics*, but not limited to, include:
â?¢ Design, modeling, and simulation of socially aware health technology
â?¢ Demonstration cases of using existing social media platforms (e.g.,
twitter, facebook) for health research
â?¢ Social network analysis for the purpose of understanding or
intervening upon health related outcomes
â?¢ Behavioral intervention implemented through social media platforms
â?¢ Disease & health management using social media applications
â?¢ Crowdsourcing health or biomedical research
â?¢ Public health resource sensing or crowdsourcing of public health
resources
â?¢ In-time, in-place healthcare information through social media
â?¢ Design and evaluation of online patient communities with social
network features
â?¢ Healthcare/mHealth Social Networks
â?¢ Data protection (Privacy, Security, Trust) in healthcare social networks
â?¢ Empowerment of patients and healthcare professionals
â?¢ Design and evaluation of social game for health education & awareness
â?¢ Classification and categorization of health information in social media
â?¢ Mining of big Data for population health monitoring or intervention
â?¢ Social computing application for health & wellness management
All contributions will be peer-reviewed by at least three experts.Â

------------------------------------------
Dear Gustaf Neumann,
The 6th International Joint Conference on Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management – IC3K 2014 (http://www.ic3k.org/) will hold a Doctoral Consortium on Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management providing an opportunity for graduate students to explore their research interests in an interdisciplinary workshop, under the guidance of a panel of distinguished experts in the field.
The Doctoral Consortium will provide students with an opportunity to:
- Present their research work in a relaxed and supportive environment;
- Receive feedback and suggestions from peers and experienced faculty;
- Gain an overview of the breadth and depth of enterprise information Systems;
- Obtain insight into directions for enterprise information systems research taken by other doctoral candidates;
- Discuss concerns about research, supervision, the job market, and other issues;
- Network with peers and future colleagues
The paper that a PhD student can submit until July 21 needs to be written in a specific format, appropriate for facilitating the aforementioned discussion, therefore it is expected to be a much simpler paper and definitely not a regular paper.
There will be a review and selection process and the accepted papers will be included in the CD-ROM that also includes the proceedings of the conference. Additionally, the papers of the Doctoral Consortium presented at the venue will also be included in the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. However, they will not be included in the book of proceedings as archival publications therefore they will remain free of copyright and the registration will be a "student registration".
Should you have any question or suggestions please don't hesitate to contact me.
Best regards,
Andreia Pereira
