*3rd Semat Workshop on General Theories of Software Engineering*
http://semat.org/?page_id=1061
2014, Hyderabad, India
In conjunction with the International. Conference on Software
Engineering (ICSE 2014)
Most academic disciplines emphasize the importance of their
general theories. Examples of general theories include the Big Bang
theory, Maxwell?s equations, the theory of the cell, the theory of
evolution, and the theory of demand and supply. Among the general
theories are also found theories with names such as the general theory
of crime and the theory of marriage, both well-established within
their respective fields. Few general theories of software engineering
have, however, been proposed, and none have achieved significant
recognition. The main consequence of a lack of theory is a
craft, limited to problem solving by trial-and-error and rules-of-thumb.
Its knowledge base can only be used for rudimentary predictions. This,
in turn, means that innovations only can be tested in vivo, which may be
both expensive and painful. The long list of well-known software
failures is a testament to the tradition of trial-and-error. Theory - a
system of rules that mimics the real world cheaply and without pain
- addresses this problem. A general theory of software engineering would
ideally advise against costly error before trials are initiated.
This workshop, organized by the SEMAT initiative, aims to provide
a forum for discussing the concept of general theories of software
engineering. The topics considered include proposed general theories as
well as papers on the benefits, the desired qualities, the
core components and the form of such theories. The workshop follows GTSE
2012, held in November 2012 in Stockholm, Sweden, and GTSE 2013, held in
May 2013 in conjunction with the ICSE 2013 in San Francisco.
To allow submissions of both developed research and of early ideas, GTSE
solicits two categories of papers: 12-page research papers and 4-page
position papers. All papers will be published in the ACM and IEEE
Digital Libraries. The papers must follow ICSE formatting guidelines:
http://2013.icse-conferences.org/content/submission-guidelines, and they
should be submitted to the workshop's EasyChair site:
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=gtse2014.
Papers from GTSE 2013 were invited to a special GTSE issue in the
Science of Computer Programming journal. We aim to organize a special
issue also for GTSE 2014.

First International Workshop on Agent-based Modeling and Simulation
of Cities (AgentCities14)
In conjunction with the 5th International Conference on
Ambient Systems, Networks, and Technologies ANT2014 (Hasselt,
Belgium)
June 2-5, 2014
http://www.multiagent.fr/Conferences:AgentCities14
DESCRIPTION
The modeling of the dynamics of the cities and their population is of
great theoretical and practical interest. In the past two-decade
research from a broad range of fields such as computer graphics,
physics, robotics, energy, social science, safety science and training
systems has created simulations involving collections of elements
(individuals or devices) immersed in cities. Many works have been
devoted to the study of collective behaviors and their inherent
emergent properties such as spontaneous organizations of pedestrians
into lines, oscillations at gates, etc. Among all the existing
approaches in simulation, those offering the highest level of realism
in behavior are microscopic approaches because they explicitly attempt
to model the features that take part in the expression of specific
behaviors of individuals. Agent-Based Simulations (ABS) are one of the
approaches to support micro-simulation. ABS principle relies upon a
set of autonomous agents, which encapsulate the behaviors of
individual entities (pedestrians, vehicles, devices...) Agent-based
modeling allows complex behaviors of various interacting entities to
emerge from a set of simpler behaviors. Phenomena such as flocks of
birds, schools of fish and
crowds are good examples of how systems with simple goals can exhibit
emergent behaviors as the result of the interactions between the
individuals. Moreover, in contrast to other micro-simulation
techniques, ABS allows to catch the variety of behaviors composing a
real system easily. ABS has proven
to be well suited for the simulation of situations where there is a
large number of heterogeneous individuals who may behave somewhat
differently. However, as soon as we consider a micro-simulation of
several agents and their relationships, the complexity of the system
and associated computational costs increase. We are therefore faced a
dilemma common in the field of simulation: to manage a compromise
between performance and accuracy.
The goal of AgentCities is to provides a place where the different
points of view on the modeling and the simulation of the city's
dynamics may be discussed. A particular focus is made on agent-based
models. The accepted application domains are various, from crowds, to
smart grid, include transport and traffic
models.
AgentCities14 will be held in Hasselt, Belgium (2-5 June 2014) in

Special Issue On: Service Science - Lean Outsourcing Analytics
*Submission Due Date*
February 3^rd , 2014
*Guest Editors*
Dr. Noel Carroll
*Introduction*
In response to the growing importance placed on understanding service
complexities, the field of â??Service Scienceâ?? has emerged to guide
the effective design, implementation, and management of service systems.
However, although Service Science calls for more theoretical focus on
understanding complex service systems, few efforts have surfaced which
apply a new theoretical lens on understanding the underlying
trajectories of organizational capability dynamics within a service
system. Lean outsourcing has become a very important topic across modern
management which focuses on exchanging service capabilities between
parties. It is largely concerned with the contracting out of an internal
business operation or process to a third party organization. However,
managers are often faced with decisions on sourcing new service
capabilities which offers higher value and efficiencies than staffing it
internally. Therefore, it is crucial that managers have some analytical
insights on how newfound capabilities impact on organizational performance.
*Objective*
The main objective of this Special Issue is to advance our understanding
on Service Science through the exploration of different models, methods,
processes, and principles in modeling lean outsourcing practices. This
special issue places emphasis on building analytics in lean outsourcing
environments. Across service networks, there is a growing need to
examine the relationship between dynamic capabilities and organizational
performance with emphasis on understanding the value co-creation process
between trading parties. Submissions are particularly welcome from
authors who focus on modeling and data mining techniques to explore and
report on lean outsourcing analytics across service networks. We invite
contributions for academic research, case studies and work-in-progress.
We also invite high quality literature reviews and validated theoretical
works.

* Service intelligence
* Service network analytics
* Service network visualization
* Service science
* Simulation of service network analytics
* Six sigma

The 11th IEEE International Conference on Services Computing (SCC 2014)
=======================================================================
http://conferences.computer.org/scc/2014/
June 27 - July 2, 2014 in Anchorage, Alaska, USA.
Sponsored by the Technical Committee on Services Computing (TC-SVC), IEEE
Computer Society
Services account for a major part of the IT industry today. Companies
increasingly like to focus on their core expertise area and use IT
services to address all their peripheral needs. Services Computing is a
new science which aims to study and better understand the foundations of
this highly popular industry. It covers the science and technology of
