Call for Track Proposals ECIS 2015
The 23rd European Conference on Information Systems ECIS 2015
May 27-29, 2015, Muenster, Germany
www.ecis2015.eu
== Conference Theme: The Networked Society ==
Modern society is a networked society permeated by information technology (IT). Networks, perceived as a group of organisations and people connected on several aspects who exchange information, contacts, and experience for professional or social purposes, leave their mark on almost every area of our society and promise diverse advantages to those involved. From a technical perspective, enormous amounts of information can be communicated to a larger number of recipients faster than ever before. The evolution of networks is heavily influenced by the extensive use of Information Systems, which has enabled co-evolving advanced quantitative and qualitative forms of networking.
== Track Proposals for ECIS 2015 - Due February 15, 2014 ==
We welcome both established and emerging topics that draw significant attention within IS research. A conference theme track "The networked society" has already been set up.
Topics of interests include (but are not limited to)
. Business Intelligence and Decision Support
. Business Process Management
. IS Diversity and Diversity in IS
. E-Business and Competitive Strategy
. Economics and the Value of IS
. Enterprise Systems
. European and Cultural Issues in IS
. Healthcare Information Systems
. Human-Computer Interaction
. Information and Enterprise Content Management
. Inter-Organizational Systems
. IS Artefacts and IS Artefact Design

== Track Chair Responsibilities ==
We cordially invite fellow researchers to propose tracks on their particular field of interest. Your responsibilities as a track chair will be to:
. liaise with the conference chairs on all matters that concern ECIS 2015
. promote the track and take sufficient measures to ensure an adequate number of submissions,
. organise a peer review cycle for the papers submitted to your track, assisted by a set of associate editors (AEs). Track chairs will nominate associate editors for the reviewing process, and they will assure that each paper will receive three high quality reviews,
. propose to the program committee the papers that will eventually be accepted for inclusion into the conference program; nominate papers for the award for best paper,
. create an attractive track program,
. personally attend ECIS 2015 and serve as session chair in your track.
== Structure of Track proposals ==
Track proposals should include:
. A title for the track.
Names, e-mail and mailing addresses, affiliations, phone numbers, urls of website of each of the three to four track co-chairs. Please designate one of the co-chairs as the primary contact person.
. A short description of the track and its focus (maximum length: 500 words and about 10 to 15 potential suggested topics): define the proposed area of research; discuss the topics the track will address and how these align with the ECIS 2015 conference theme.
. A discussion on how these topics have recently been covered in other conferences and publications, substantiating that ECIS 2015 will be an appropriate and timely forum for the topics.
. A tentative list of associate editors for the proposed track (between 10 and 15). Please provide names and affiliations, and indicate if they may already have committed themselves to serve as AEs for your track.
. Short bios of each co-track chair including your track record (if any) in organising tracks, or in other academic services in the IS community.
. Track chairs are encouraged to make fast track or special issue arrangements with leading journals that fit the topic of the track.
== Evaluation ==
Each proposal will be evaluated by the conference chairs in cooperation with the research and research in progress chairs. Decisions will be based on (a) the overall merit of the proposal, (b) the significance of the subject covered, (c) the profile and diversity of the track team, and the (d) fit with the conference theme.
The conference chairs will select tracks with the objective being to (a) balance the more traditional IS topics with emerging topics, and (b) to support diversity of chairs and AEs in gender, experience, and geographical background. If needed, track proposals might be merged in order to obtain the best possible coverage of topics and the best mix of track chairs.
Evaluations will be carried out by the conference chairs in cooperation with both research and research in progress chairs.
== Research Paper Chairs ==
rpchairs(a)ecis2015.eu
. Richard Baskerville (Georgia State University, United States)
. Shirley Gregor (Australian National University, Australia)
. Jos van Hillegersberg (University of Twente, The Netherlands)
. Robert Winter (University of St. Gallen, Switzerland)
== Research-in-Progress Chairs ==
ripchairs(a)ecis2015.eu

== Submissions ==
Track proposals should be e-mailed to track-proposals(a)ecis2015.eu as soon as possible but no later than February 15th, 2014, 12pm CET. Notifications of acceptance or rejection of proposed tracks will be sent out in May 2014.
Please once again note that in order to ensure interesting and a sufficiently extensive range of tracks, the ECIS 2015 Conference Chairs might approach you with a suggestion to modify your track proposal. In case there are proposals for identical or similar topics, the committee might ask you to consider joining forces with another group. Track proposals that do not meet the criteria can be directly rejected by the organizers.

*4. Workshop im Rahmen der Modellierung 2014,
19.-20. März 2014, Universität Wien*
*Zielsetzung*
Betriebswirtschaftslehre (z. B. Produktion, Dienstleistungsmanagement,
Marketing), den Ingenieurwissenschaften (z. B. Konstruktionslehre,

Design Science Research: The Road Traveled and the Road That Lies Ahead
Matti Rossi (Aalto University School of Economics, Aalto, Finland)
Ola Henfridsson (University of Warwick, Coventry, UK)
Kalle Lyytinen (Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, USA)
Keng Siau (Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, MO, USA)
In this introductory piece to the special issue on design science
research (DSR) in information systems, the authors probe the past
research in DSR, introduce the papers in the special issue, discuss
their contributions to the field, and conclude the paper by highlighting
some potential directions for future research. To provide a good
overview of the research domain, the authors review the key research
approaches (or processes) that have been proposed and identify the
concrete products of DSR that come in the form of artifacts. As the
production of artifact is only part of the DSR process, the authors
discuss the role of theorizing about these results and propose avenues
for future design-oriented research. It is the authors' strong belief
that DSR should be at the heart of information systems discipline
because it invites people to research the issues surrounding the
development and organizational implementation of new systems.

Using the Viable System Model for Methodical Assessment of Variety in
Organizations: The Story of Designing a Method
Christoph Rosenkranz (Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt,
Germany)
Roland Holten (Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt, Germany)
The complexity in value chains that arises from the cooperation of
multiple stakeholders is of utmost importance for managers and
organizational designers. In this context, theories of organizational
design seek to address the practical problem of intentionally changing
organizational structures and processes to enhance organizational
performance. Successful cooperation largely depends on effective and
efficient information flows. This paper reports on a research project
using the design science research framework to develop a method for the
analysis and design of information flows. Linking information flows to
the concept of variety, the Viable System Model is applied as a
theoretical foundation of the so-called Variety Engineering method. The
design of method is reported, the procedure for its application is
demonstrated, and it is accounted for how the method was evaluated in a
set of field studies.

*PAPER THREE*
An Information Systems Design Theory for an Expert System for Training
Juan Manuel Gómez Reynoso (Autonomous University of Aguascalientes,
Aguascalientes, Mexico)
Lorne Olfman (Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA, USA)
Terry Ryan (Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA, USA)
Tom Horan (Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA, USA)
The authors developed and evaluated an expert system-based training
system using Information Systems Design Theory (ISDT). First, an Expert
System for Training (EST) was designed and implemented, and then a
version of EST without expertise features, called IST, was also created.
In order to evaluate which training system (if any) delivers better
training, a three-group quasi-experiment was used. Each group was
trained to use Statistical Process Control (SPC). One group was trained
using the EST; outcomes for this group were significantly the highest
among the three. A second group was trained using the IST; outcomes were
not as high as the first group but significantly higher compared with
the control group. The control group was trained with traditional means.
Results show that the ISDT led to a useful purposely-developed
application for enhancing the training of workers who have limited
education but need to know about a very specific and complex field where
the availability of trainers is limited. The authors call for further
research that uses this ISDT to build purposely-developed software to
support training of complex tasks.

*PAPER FOUR*
Truth or Dare: The Ontology Question in Design Science Research
Sandeep Purao (Penn State University, University Park, PA, USA)
This essay investigates the ontology question in design science
research. Writings on the philosophy of science do not fully address
this concern for design science research because of the traditional
emphasis on discovering truthful laws. In contrast, design science
research dares to create novel IT artifacts with a view to realizing
alternative futures. Taking this into account, the author articulates
fundamental world-views for the canonical form of design science
research, which involves instantiation of the outcomes as a software
artifact. These world-views include an ontological basis and an
epistemological stance that are the foundation of design science
research practice. The author's derivation of these world-views reflects
shifts in the researcher's stance through the research process, and the
interconnectedness of the problem and the artifact. The author discusses
implications of these proposed world-views including comparisons against
other research traditions, greater clarity for design research practice,
and the potential for extending the analysis to other strands of design
science research.
