CALL FOR PAPERS
Discovery Informatics Symposium:
The Role of AI Research in Innovating Scientific Processes
November 2-4, 2012, Arlington, VA (USA)
AAAI Fall Symposium Series

Addressing the ambitious research agendas put forward by many scientific
disciplines requires meeting a multitude of challenges in intelligent
systems, information sciences, and human-computer interaction. There are
many aspects of the scientific discovery process that our community
could help automate, facilitate, or make more efficient through
artificial intelligence techniques. For example, although considerable
efforts have been directed toward data modeling and integration, these
activities continue to demand large investments of scientists’ time and
effort. The scientific literature continues to grow and is becoming more
and more unmanageable for researchers operating in the most active
disciplines. Better interfaces for collaboration, visualization, and
understanding would significantly improve scientific practice.
Scientific data, publications, and tools could be published in open
formats with appropriate semantic descriptions and metadata annotations
to improve sharing and dissemination. Opportunities for broader
participation in well-defined scientific tasks enable human contributors
to provide large amounts of data, annotations, or complex processing
results that could not otherwise be obtained. These are just some
examples of areas where there are opportunities for artificial
intelligent techniques could make a difference. Improvements and
innovations across the spectrum of scientific processes and activities
will have a profound impact on the rate of scientific discoveries.
This symposium will provide a forum for researchers interested in
understanding the role of AI techniques in improving or innovating
scientific processes.
We seek submissions that: (1) report on success stories that illustrate
the potential of future research in this field; (2) discuss lessons
learned in the process of addressing challenging aspects of the
scientific process; (3) analyze the impact of a particular technique in
an area of science and reflect on its potential for broader
applicability in other sciences; and (4) propose future concepts
grounded in lessons learned and an understanding of the challenges in
the scientific discovery process.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
• Ontologies and knowledge bases that model particular areas of
scientific knowledge
• Semantic representations of metadata for all aspects of scientific
processes
• Techniques for organizing scientific literature
• Workflow systems to manage complex data analysis processes
• Knowledge discovery techniques that are embedded in the context of
scientific investigations
• Integrative approaches of machine learning and scientific model induction
• Automated systems for experiment design, data analysis, and hypothesis
generation and refinement
• User-centered design of intelligent systems that partner with
scientists to perform complex tasks
• Integrated approaches to visualizing data, models, and the connections
between them to foster new insights
• Cognitive-centered design of scientist aids
• Social computing systems that let novice participants contribute to
scientific tasks
Submissions can be up to 6 pages, using the AAAI style files.
Submissions should be uploaded to the submission site no later than June
5 2012 before midnight on the timezone of your choice.

Call For Papers
Traditionally the management of business operations caters around two key
issues: control flow and data. As a result, each of the two has attracted
over the past years people both in academia and industry, manifesting
itself into a plethora of methods, and tools that have been designed to
assist with the management of these two concerns. Yet, the natural and yet
independent evolution in both areas has led to a reality in which in many
cases the handling of one concern is treated as an afterthought with
respect to the other. Recently however, we see the emergence of paradigms
that are aimed to blend the two concerns, seeking for new approaches that
may naturally and seamlessly unify the two in order to better streamline
the overall complexity in BPM. Contemporary examples include
Artifact-Centric BPM, Petri-nets, and Case-Management. Therefore, the DAB
workshop is aimed at bringing together researchers and practitioners whose
common interest and experience is in the study and development of new
foundations, models, methods, and technologies that are intended to
uniformly and holistically align data and control flow.
We invite researchers from the BPM field to submit papers that investigate
the tight interplay between data and control flow. We aim at discussing the
current state of ongoing research, as well as industry needs and sharing
practical experiences. The list of topics that is covered by data- and
artifact- centric BPM includes, but is not limited to:
Data modeling Declarative process modeling
Artifact-centric (a.k.a. Business-Entity or BEL) modeling
Flexible process management / Case management
Multi-perspective process mining
Data-aware conformance
Data-aware compliance
Data and processes management for Cloud
Composition and discovery techniques of data-centric processes
Data-centric process monitoring, QoS, SLA
Integration and interoperability of data-/artifact- centric BPM
Foundations to the integration of data and process in systems analysis
Data-& Artifact- centric BPM methods and methodologies
Empirical studies of Data-& Artifact- centric BPM
All workshop papers will be published by Springer as a post-workshop
proceedings volume in the series Lecture Notes in Business Information
Processing (LNBIP). Hard copies of these proceedings will be shipped to all
registered participants approximately four months after the workshops,
while preliminary proceedings will be distributed during the workshop.

Second Call For Papers
BNC@ECAI'12
Belief change, Non-monotonic reasoning and Conflict resolution
http://cair.meraka.org.za/~bnc2012
<http://cair.meraka.org.za/%7Ebnc2012>
Montpellier, France
*** Aims and Scope
Belief change, non-monotonic reasoning and conflict
resolution are well established
research areas in Artificial Intelligence. In recent years
these topics have become
important for designing robots and infobots with convincing
reasoning and adaptation
capabilities. The main aim of this workshop is to bring
together active researchers
on these topics, including work on belief revision, belief
merging, reasoning about
action, logic programming, inconsistency management,
judgment aggregation,
negotiation, and other related topics. Papers on emerging
research in this area are
especially welcome.
Numerous recent papers use techniques from belief change to
define conflict resolution
methods. In particular, several negotiation and judgment
aggregation methods are closely
related to work in belief revision or belief merging.
Combining ideas from these research
topics is one of the aims of this workshop. Hence we
especially encourage submission of
survey papers or position papers on these questions.
A further important trend is the study of the applicability
of well known belief change
operators and techniques for particular languages that are
largely used in applications,
such as Horn logics, description logics, or argumentation
frameworks. New developments
towards such applicative contexts are also highly welcome.
*** Topics
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Argumentation
- Belief change
- Belief revision and update
- Belief merging
- Conflict resolution
- Inconsistency management

SBP'12: Joint Workshop on Security in Business Processes
<http://www.inf.unibz.it/sbp12/>
in conjunction with the
10th Int'l Conference on Business Process Management
<http://bpm2012.ut.ee/>
Despite the growing demand for compliant business processes, security
and privacy incidents caused by erroneous process specifications are
still omnipresent. In fact, often business process management and
security issues stand out as separate silos, and are seldom addressed
together towards the development of trustworthy, compliant business
processes.
By combining the successful experiences of the First International
Workshop on Alignment of the Business Process and Security Modelling
(ABPSM'11) and Workshop on Workflow Security Audit and Certification
(WfSAC'11), the Joint Workshop on Security in Business Processes
(SBP'12) brings together researchers and practitioners interested in
security management of business process in process-aware information
systems.
SBP'12 encourages innovative methods for workflow security audit and
control along the entire business process life-cycle: from design time
verification to online operational support and post-mortem
analysis. Furthermore, it welcomes contributions beyond the strictly
technical character, for instance those considering economic, legal and
standardization issues.

Subject: [AISWorld] DATA BASE for Advances in Information
Systems TOC - 43(2)
Date: Tue, 8 May 2012 20:37:14 -0500
From: Andrew Schwarz <aschwarz(a)lsu.edu>
To: <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
Dear Colleagues:
Just after we had given final approval to the publisher for
articles that will appear in this month's issue, we were
saddened to read in Lorne Olfman's post to AISWORLD (dated
May 5) that Paul Gray (who, in addition to being a leading
light of our field is one of our authors this month) and his
wife Muriel had recently been involved in a serious
automobile accident. We were relieved to read further that
they had both survived the accident, albeit with serious
injuries. We offer our best wishes for a full and rapid
recovery to them both.
We are pleased to announce the May, 2012 (Volume 43, Number
2) issue of The Data Base for Advances in Information
Systems. While we do not recruit for "special issues",
sometimes they emerge in the course of events. This issue is
an example. After learning we were taking over the journal,
one of the first content areas that we identified was to
look at our field from the perspective of different
stakeholders with an interest in our discipline. To this
end, one of the viewpoints that we are interested in
understanding is how business school deans view our field.
As of this writing, there are at least a few Business School
Deans that come from the IS discipline, and some of these
were able to take time from their busy schedules and offer
their insights on how the IS discipline is seen as
contributing (or not) to the advancement of the business
school mission.
Our invitation welcomed a range of perspectives; both
supportive and critical of how the IS discipline fulfills
its role in the business school. Given their day jobs,
finding Deans that were willing and able to find the time
was not an easy task. However, we were able to secure essays
from four Deans who were able to find the time to
participate: Michael Ginzberg of American University, Len
Jessup of the University of Arizona, Mohan Tanniru of
Oakland University, and Peter Todd of McGill University. We
anticipated that we would receive insightful commentary and
our essayists have not disappointed.
After collecting the Deans essays, we invited two AIS Leo
Award winners, Blake Ives (with Dennis Adams) and Paul Gray
to offer additional commentary given the issues the Deans
have raised. What we hope to engender with this initiative
is an honest discussion about the strengths and weaknesses
of our field, and how we can make the value we all see in it
more obvious to those entities we need to influence.
We believe that this issue will initiate a new debate on the
value of the IS field within the broader academic community
and we urge you to pick up a copy and read these insightful
essays. After you have finished reading this issue, bring
your thoughts with you to AMCIS in Seattle, where we will be
hosting a panel of IS deans (scheduled for Saturday, August
11, 2012 at 1:30 PM). The panel there is slated to consist
of John Mooney (Pepperdine), Peter Todd (Dean, McGill), Len
Jessup (Dean, Arizona), Mark Fuller (Dean, Massachusetts),
Bill Hardgrave (Dean, Auburn), Andy Schwarz (LSU) and Dave
Salisbury (Dayton). We hope that the essays and commentary
we present here will help generate ideas for discussion at
the panel in Seattle.
While this issue consists of solely invited pieces on this
topic, we wish to remind the field that we still invite you
to submit your best empirical work to be included within our
pages. We believe that invited pieces such as you see in
this issue will help draw eyes to the journal, and thereby
also to the excellent empirical work you will provide.
In our previous issue, we noted that we had put together a
really great editorial team. Matti Rossi of Aalto University
is one of them. However, he turned out to be so great that
he was recently named Editor-in-Chief of The Communications
of the AIS, so he will be stepping away to engage fully in
that role. We thank Matti for his service, and wish him well
in his new endeavor.
Finally, we'd like to take this opportunity to remind our
colleagues that SIGMIS membership costs $29 per year ($19
for students) and includes a subscription to The Data Base
for Advances in Information Systems. The link below may be
used to sign up.
(https://campus.acm.org/public/gensigqj/gensigqj_control.cfm?promo=QJSIG&off… <https://campus.acm.org/public/gensigqj/gensigqj_control.cfm?promo=QJSIG&off…>).
We hope you find this issue to be engaging. Thanks for your
time and attention.
Andy Schwarz and Dave Salisbury.
