WE INVITE YOU TO SUBMIT PAPERS IN THE AREA OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR
ISD2012 (21ST INTERNATIONAL SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE) TO BE HELD
ON 29-31AUGUST 2012 IN PRATO, ITALY.
SUSTAINABILITY HAS SEVERAL MEANINGS, WITH THE DOMINANT MEANING REFERRING
TO THE NATURAL ECOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DOMAINS. GREEN IT RELATIVELY
RECENTLY BECAME A POPULAR TOPIC AT CONFERENCES AND IN PUBLICATIONS.
WHILE THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE, SUSTAINABILITY MAY ALSO REFER TO THE
MAINTENANCE OF THE COMPLEX WEAVE OF SOCIAL SYSTEMS. AGAIN THERE IS A
VERY WIDE RANGE OF MEANINGS OF WHAT "SOCIAL SYSTEMS" MEANS, BUT FOR THE
PURPOSE OF THIS TRACK, SOCIAL ECOLOGY WOULD BE THE FOCUS.
INFORMATION SYSTEMS (IS) THEORY TRADITIONALLY FOCUSES ON IS FOR
ORGANIZATIONS, TYPICALLY BUSINESS ORGANIZATIONS, ASSUMING ALL OTHER
KINDS OF SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS (SUCH AS GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS AND
NON-GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS) TO BE VARIANTS OF BUSINESS SYSTEMS. THE PC
ITSELF WAS DEVELOPED AS A BUSINESS TOOL, AND ONLY OVER THE PAST TWO
DECADES WITH ITS ABILITY TO HANDLE MULTIMEDIA ALSO BECAME A TOOL FOR
ENTERTAINMENT. OVER THE PAST DECADE THE NETWORKED PC BECAME A POWERFUL
TOOL ALSO IN PERSONAL COMMUNICATION AND PRIVATE SOCIALIZATION IN THE
FORM OF THE SO-CALLED SOCIAL MEDIA. THE RISE INTO PROMINENCE OF THE PC
AS A TOOL OF ENTERTAINMENT, COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL MEDIA PUT
INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN THE HANDS OF INDIVIDUALS FOR THE USE OF
NON-BUSINESS PURPOSES - I.E. FOR NON-STRUCTURED OR SEMI-STRUCTURED
SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS AND PERSONAL USE. THE RECENT MOBILIZATION OF
NON-STRUCTURED SOCIO-POLITICAL GATHERINGS ON THE MEDITERRANEAN AND IN
THE MIDDLE EAST WERE MADE POSSIBLE BY SOCIAL MEDIA TECHNOLOGY; WHILE
CITIZEN PRESSURE GROUPS USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO GET THEIR VOICES HEARD,
DEMONSTRATED BY THE SEVERAL MILLION OBJECTIONS EARLY IN 2012 AGAINST THE
PROPOSED ANTIPIRACY BILLS IN THE USA. WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF SUCH
NON-FORMAL SOCIAL GROUPS AND INDIVIDUAL USE ON THE DESIGN AND
CONSTRUCTION OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS? SHOULD DESIGN BE ABOUT
HUMAN-COMPUTER-INTERFACE (HCI), OR ABOUT HUMAN-HUMAN COMMUNICATION
(HHC), FACILITATED BY TECHNOLOGY? SIMILAR QUESTIONS WERE RECENTLY POSED
AT OTHER CONFERENCES, EG. THE INTERACTION CONFERENCE -

*Secound announcement*
The second announcement of the II CfP for the III WCSA
CONFERENCE which is a great chance for us all to map and
connnect our different streams and working styles inside the
systemic approach. The focus of this conference is on the
epistemological, theoretical, methodological, technical and
practical contributions that the systemic approach has made
to disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives
(sociology, management, engineering, biology, economics,
mathematics, statistics, etc.), which are rooted in the
systemic approach itself, and which have developed theories
and methods and which concern the complexity of these
perspectives.

CALL FOR PAPERS
BIRTE 2012
Sixth International Workshop on
Real-Time Business Intelligence
http://BIRTE2012.cs.wpi.edu/
August 27, 2012
In conjunction with VLDB 2012
August 27-31, 2012 Istanbul, Turkey
IMPORTANT DATES

* Papers due: June 3, 2012
* Notification: June 20, 2012
* Camera-ready copies: August 1, 2012
DESCRIPTION
In today's competitive and highly dynamic environment,
analyzing data to understand how the business is performing
and to predict outcomes and trends has become critical. The
traditional approach to reporting is no longer adequate.
Instead users now demand easy-to-use intelligent platforms
and applications capable of analyzing real-time data to
provide insight and actionable information at the right
time. The end goal is to support better and timelier
decision making, enabled by the availability of up-to-date,
high quality information.
Although there has been progress in this direction and many
companies are introducing products towards meeting this
goal, there is still a long way to go. In particular, the
whole lifecycle of business intelligence requires innovative
techniques and methodologies capable of dealing with the
requirements imposed by these new generation of BI
applications. From the capture of real-time business data to
the transformation and delivery of actionable information,
all the stages of the Business Intelligence (BI) cycle call
for new algorithms and paradigms to support value-added
functionalities. These functionalities include dynamic
integration of real-time data feeds from operational
sources, optimization and evolution of ETL transformations
and analytical models, and dynamic generation of adaptive
real-time dashboards, just to name a few.
The series of BIRTE workshops, starting in 2006, have always
been held in conjunction with VLDB. The series aims to
provide a forum to discuss topics related to this emerging
field and set research directions towards making business
intelligence more real-time. Following the success of
previous BIRTE editions (2006, 2008-2011) submissions for
research, industrial and position papers on relevant topics
are encouraged.
