Subject: [WI] Special Issue of JWS: Reasoning with Context
in the Semantic Web (deadline: 15 June 2011)
Date: Wed, 11 May 2011 23:20:39 -0300
From: ARCOE <organization(a)arcoe.org>

Sincere apologies for multiple postings.
Call for Papers:
================================================
Special Issue of the Journal of Web Semantics on
"Reasoning with context in the Semantic Web"
================================================
Mechanisms for reasoning with context have become
increasingly important factors in the Semantic Web. There is
a growing need for general and robust reasoning techniques
that make it possible to integrate heterogeneous knowledge
or to use homogeneous knowledge across different domains.
Research on this topic has so far, and not surprisingly,
concentrated on formal ontologies, i.e., on the logical
structures that encode the semantics of a software's domain
of application. Work on the Semantic Web as well as on
information integration, distributed knowledge management,
multi-agent and distributed reasoning has focussed on the
relationship between an ontology and its context. This has
aimed at clarifying how to relate knowledge that is
distributed over many resources. Recent Semantic Web
specific developments suggest that aspects of this relation
can be captured by means of named graphs (to express
meta-information), the use of provenance (to track the
context where data/axioms came from) and querying (to
facilitate reasoning).
Other neighbouring research areas, though, have also
investigated topics that shed light on how to reason with
context in the Semantic Web. Ontology Engineering and
Maintenance, for instance, has tackled the problems faced by
ontology engineers when developing and maintaining an
ontology. The yielded automation of the process of ontology
development and of its phases (e.g. knowledge elicitation,
revision cycles, alignment with pre-existing ontologies
etc.) has improved efficiency, reduced the introduction of
unintended meanings into ontologies and in general made
explicit the relationship between an ontology and its
development context. Finally, research on Problem Solving
and Agent Communication has explored how an agent's ontology
needs to change at run-time because of interactions with its
context – for instance with other agents whose ontologies
are not known or with new non-classifiable world situations.
This type of research has delivered a deeper understanding
of the evolution of an ontology and is often based on
non-monotonic reasoning, belief revision or changes of
signature, i.e., of the grammar of the ontology's language,
with a minimal disruption to the original theory.
* Topics of interest:
This special issue aims at bringing together work on
reasoning with context in the Semantic Web from the
integration, development and evolutionary perspectives
described above. Submitted articles, which may describe
either theoretical results or applications, must clearly
pertain to the Semantic Web and/or to semantic technologies.
They should present either Semantic Web specific approaches
to reasoning with context, or approaches that have
characteristics that are interesting for the Semantic Web
(e.g., scalability, bounded reasoning), or approaches that
are of value to a larger community containing a non-trivial
Semantic Web sub-community (e.g. revision/update techniques
and error pin-pointing).
Submissions are welcome on topics relevant to reasoning
with context in the Semantic Web and that include but are
not limited to:
- Named graphs
- Provenance
- Knowledge representation languages for semantic technologies
- Planning and reasoning about action and change in the
Semantic Web
- Ontology fault diagnosis and repair
- Pinpointing of logical errors in contexts and ontologies
- Explanation and justifications in DL ontologies

- Inconsistency handling in contexts and ontologies
- Uncertainty handling, defeasible reasoning and
argumentation in ontologies
- Non-classical belief revision
- Context revision and theory change in DL ontologies
- Ontology and context versioning
- Semantic difference in ontologies and in contexts
- Information and knowledge integration
- The role of context and ontology in distributed reasoning
and knowledge management
- Heuristic and approximate reasoning
- Bounded reasoning and bounded rationality in the Semantic Web
- Adaptive systems and reconfiguration
- Ontology-based data access
- Querying
- Multi-Agent systems in the Semantic Web
- Temporal and spatial reasoning
- Normative reasoning in the Semantic Web
- General problem solving for semantic technologies
- Machine learning for the Semantic Web

The Fifth International Conference on Research and
Practical Issues of Enterprise Information Systems
(CONFENIS 2011) to be held in Aalborg, Denmark, October
16-18, 2011
Track: Social Theories in Enterprise Systems Research
Call for Papers
Developing enterprise systems
<http://www.confenis2011.aau.dk/digitalAssets/19/19999_cfp-stesr.pdf>is
a rather multifaceted challenge that is partly about the
design of new technologies, but also involves the
development of supportive social frameworks and
institutional structures as well as normative conventions
that complement and reinforce the adoption and diffusion of
these technologies at large. Therefore, investigating the
technological nature of enterprise systems alone without
examining their prevalent social aspects yields an
incomplete and somewhat shortsighted understanding of the
underlying issues.
Thus far, the prevailing discourse on enterprise systems has
had techno-centered orientation in spite of the far-reaching
social ramifications of these systems. Subsequently, we seek
submissions that explore social and organizational aspects
of enterprise systems using theories such as actor-network
theory, institutional theory, structuration theory,
sensemaking, sociotechnical theory, information
infrastructure theory or other theories used in organization
studies. In particular, we wish to attract papers from
researchers who apply, build on, or compare social theories
within the domain of enterprise systems.
Submissions may relate to any social aspect of enterprise
systems, for example:
- Enterprise system implementation
- Organizational issues related to enterprise system adoption
- Social impacts of enterprise systems in or across
organizational settings
- How users make sense of enterprise systems
- Enterprise systems as information infrastructures
- The role of social and historical structures in enterprise
system adaptation
- Institutional logics behind enterprise system implementation
- Balancing between emergent innovative capabilities and
mature economies of scale
All research genres are equally welcome, including
qualitative or quantitative research, case studies, survey
research, and conceptual frameworks. We particularly
encourage submissions that challenge or reframe our
taken-for-granted assumptions, perceptions and practices.

Rationale and aim
-----------------
Over the last decade we have been witnessing an increasing use of
Business Intelligence (BI) solutions, which allow business people to
query, understand, and analyze their business data to make better
decisions. Traditionally, BI applications allow business people to
acquire useful knowledge from the data of their organization by means of
a variety of technologies, such as data warehousing, data mining,
business performance management, OLAP, periodical business reports, and
the like.
Yet, in the very recent years, a new trend emerged: BI applications no
longer limit their analysis to the data inside a company. Increasingly,
they also source their data from the outside, specifically, from the
Web, and complement company-internal data with value-adding information
from the Web (e.g., retail prices of products sold by competitors), with
the purpose of providing richer insights into the dynamics of today’s
business.
In parallel to the move of data from the Web into BI applications, we
are also witnessing a move of BI applications from company-internal
information systems to the Web: BI as a service (e.g., hosted BI
platforms for small- and medium-size companies) is the target of huge
investments and the focus of large research efforts by industry. The
idea is that of outsourcing the processing and analysis of large bodies
of data and consuming BI from the cloud: the so-called Cloud Intelligence.
We associate the above dynamics in the BI landscape with the following
research challenges:
1. Data from the Web is feeding BI applications
In the last decade, the amount and complexity of data available on the
Web has been growing rapidly. As a consequence, designers of BI
applications making use of data from the Web have to deal with several
issues. Among the most interesting challenges we find, for instance, the
extraction and integration of heterogeneous data sources. But there are
many other interesting research challenges that arise when the Web is
seen as a data repository: how to develop Web warehousing solutions, how
to handle data quality issues, how to leverage semantic Web
technologies, how to employ Web mining, how to do BI with unstructured
data (e.g., text) or semi-structured data (e.g., XML), and so on. Also,
a recently emerged research challenge is Web Intelligence, which
explores the use of Artificial Intelligence in combination with Web
technologies, including novel statistical methodologies. Other
interesting topics arise when Web usage data (e.g., logs, data streams,
click streams, etc.) are analyzed and used in BI applications, since
these data can give support to the development of Web applications, for
example to achieve advanced levels of adaptivity in websites.
2. BI applications are moving to the Web
The move of BI applications from company-internal information systems to
applications that are accessible over the Web implies the need for
web-specific design competencies. In this context, we strongly believe
that (existing and future) Web engineering methodologies and
technologies represent a large body of knowledge and expertise that
could be very useful in the design of applications that allow decision
makers to access BI data and functionalities over the Web. Good Web
engineering is also the foundation of the design of real-time BI and
business performance management applications, as through the Web
applications access to data is provided from anywhere, at anytime, and
via any media. Furthermore, BI on the Web also implies a plethora of new
research challenges that are specific to the BI context, e.g., using Web
mashups and RIA for BI development, usability and accessibility for BI
applications, security issues in BI, and so on. Finally, another
research challenge is related to extracting knowledge from diverse Web
sources in order to support, validate or analyze business models.
Topics of interest
------------------
The scope of this special issue includes but is not limited to:
- Web warehousing
- Extraction, transformation, and load of Web data
- Web integration
- Web data quality
- Semantic Web technologies
- Web Mining
- Web Intelligence
- Novel statistical methodologies for BI
- The role of Web 2.0/3.0 in BI
- Social networks and BI
- BI with unstructured data (e.g., text) and semi-structured data (e.g.,
XML)
- BI for designing adaptive websites
- Web engineering techniques for BI applications (Web mashups, RIA, etc.)
- Real time BI
- Business performance management
- Usability and accessibility for BI applications

************ Call for Proposals for Workshops ************
*********** Petri nets 2012 *************
**********************************************************
The 33rd International Conference on Application and Theory of Petri Nets and Concurrency (Petri nets 2012) will take place in Hamburg, Germany (as usual in the last full week of June).
For this major event, we are now inviting people to submit proposals for workshops.
The purpose of the workshops is to provide an informal setting for workshop participants to discuss technical issues, exchange research ideas, and to discuss and or demonstrate applications.
These workshops may be driven by fundamental academic interests or by needs from specific application domains.
We encourage a diversity of workshops relating to Petri nets or other models of concurrency.
All workshop proposals must be written in English.
Proposals for workshops should be no more than 3 pages in length and submitted to the W&T chairs before June 7, 2011 (see below).
A workshop proposal should include a draft call-for-papers containing at least the following information:
- Title and brief technical description of the workshop, specifying the goals and the technical issues that will be its focus.
- A brief description of why and to whom the workshop is of interest.
- The names and contact information (web page, email address) of the Program Committee (PC) chairs, i.e., the workshop organizers.
Moreover, a tentative list of workshop PC members should be given. We suggest one or two PC chairs and at least 10 PC members coming from different countries.
Moreover, the following additional information is requested:
- A list of related workshops or similar events to be held in the same year or within the previous two years.

*/Computer-based Knowledge & Skill Assessment and Feedback in Learning
Settings (CAF)/*
http://www.iicm.edu/CAF2011
This special track will take place during ICL 2011 in in Piešťany,
Slovakia (21 - 23 September 2011) as a special programme item.
/The Special Track CAF 2011/provides an interdisciplinary forum for
international scientists and practitioners to discuss various aspects of
computer-based knowledge & skill assessment in learning settings and
based on that feedback provision for students and teachers. This year
CAF is organized in cooperation with the European funded project ALICE
(Adaptive Learning via Intuitive/Interactive, Collaborative and
Emotional System), http://www.aliceproject.eu.
The /International Conference on Interactive Computer aided Learning
(ICL)/ is an interdisciplinary conference which aims to focus on the
exchange of relevant trends and research results as well as the
presentation of practical experiences in interactive computer aided
learning.
*Background*
Our modern life at the beginning of the 21st century is strongly
influenced by effects such as rapidly changing and developing
information, technology-enhanced communication and information access,
and new forms of production and services in a globalized world. This
situation requires individuals to adapt their skills and competencies.
Consequently, educational objectives and societal expectations have
changed significantly in recent years. Modern learning settings must
consider learning community aspects as well as learner-centered,
knowledge-centered and assessment-centered aspects.
By focusing on the assessment, this concept can be further distinguished
in (1) summative assessment, performed at the end of a set of learning
activities, and (2) formative assessment, which is intended to give
continuous feedback to students and teachers. The latter mentioned
formative assessment gives information about the current state of
knowledge and/or the degree of knowledge acquisition within learning
activities.
Assessment is an important component of modern teaching and learning
processes in face-to-face courses as well as in e-learning environments;
it provides valuable feedback to teachers and students which allows the
revision and adaptation of teaching and learning activities.
Furthermore, assessment activities and results can also be utilized for
building and strengthening metacognitive skills. However, continuous and
frequent assessment in learning processes may cause excessive efforts
and costs. Therefore, computer-assisted assessment systems (CaAS) and
computer-based assessment systems (CbAS) have become of increasing
interest over the years. Assessment systems may support parts or the
entire chain of the assessment lifecycle. This lifecycle includes
authoring and management of assessment items, compilation of specific
tests, performance of assessments, and compilation and management
results. Additionally, emerging interest in the sharing and re-use of
assessment items or compiled assessment tests and the exchangeability of
assessment outcomes has resulted in standardization efforts, such as the
IMS Question & Test Interoperability Specification (IMS QTI).
The special track will bring together international researchers as well
as practitioners from different organisations who will have plenty of
time for networking and real-world knowledge sharing.
CAF is interested in novel scientific research, findings from
experiments and results form real-life applications. We invite
submissions that deal with issues including, but not limited to:
* Aspects of formative and summative assessment
* History and challenges of e-assessment
* Computer-supported assessment rubric

Special Session on Human-Robot Cooperation - HRC 2011
In the Human-Robot Cooperation scenario, the traditional idea of a robot performing "pre-programmed action" will change drastically, in that the robot co-worker interacts with the human worker towards achieving a common goal. Here, the environment is much less structured than in the classical setting, and the human worker is supposed to "program" the robot interactively and intuitively as the work unfolds.
This means that the robotic systems require some basic autonomy: they must be able to handle the information about the environment and the human user, and they must be programmable "on-the-job" through a natural and very intuitive user interface.
Such an interface should be based on the robot's recognition of user instructions. This implies the use of speech and natural language interfaces, vision systems for object or user detection/recognition, gesture and gaze identification, and the utilization of several physical interaction devices (force, touch).
HRC Chair: Bruno Siciliano, University of Naples Federico II, Italy
Special Session on Manufacturing Simulation and Industrial Engineering - MSIE 2011
Industrial engineering is a branch of engineering dealing with the optimization of complex processes or systems, well related to business-oriented disciplines such as Operations Management. Industrial engineers use computer simulation (especially discrete event simulation), along with extensive mathematical tools and modeling and computational methods for system analysis, evaluation, and optimization. Industrial simulation can help to identify inefficiencies and examine how these may be addressed. With the integration of artificial intelligence, agents and other modeling techniques, simulation has become an effective and appropriate decision support tool in industry. The MSIE special session focuses on simulation applications for the factory of the future (e.g. transformable factories, networked factories, learning factories, digital factories) in application areas such as Automotive Industries, Aerospace, CAD/CAM/CAE, Defense Electronics, Simulation in Industrial Design, In!
dustrial and Process Simulation, Supply Chain, Power Plants, etc.
The MSIE special session invites quality papers describing original work including research ideas, case-studies and new findings on methodological and technological aspects related to Manufacturing Simulation and Industrial Engineering, in particular papers describing methods, techniques, recent advances, applications and tools.
MSIE Chair: Oleg Gusikhin, Ford Research& Adv. Engineering, U.S.A.
Special Session on Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation - ABMS 2011
Agent-based modeling and simulation involves computational models for simulating the actions and interactions of autonomous agents (both individual or collective entities such as organizations or groups) in order to understand complex phenomena. It may combine elements of decision theory, distributed systems, computational sociology, multi-agent systems, robotics, and evolutionary programming. There are many approaches to intelligent software agent development, ranging from reactive agents to deliberative agents, with different levels of efficiency and effectiveness. Agent-based models have been used since the mid-1990s to solve a variety of business and technology problems. Examples of applications include supply chain optimization and logistics, modeling of consumer behavior, social network effects, portfolio management or traffic congestion.
The ABMS special session invites quality papers describing original work including research ideas, case-studies and new findings on methodological and technological aspects related to agent-based modeling and simulation, in particular papers describing methods, techniques, recent advances, applications and tools.
ABMS Chair: Joaquim Filipe, Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal\INSTICC, Portugal
