These activities are central elements in research of *appropriation*, or the ways that technologies are adopted, adapted and incorporated into use practice. Over the years, two communities – designers and user researchers – have been working on this topic but have had limited interaction with each other. This workshop provides a forum for the two to meet. We have two main goals: * enabling researchers interested in IS, CSCW and user studies to meet the designers, and vice versa * to promote development of practical solutions and suggestions that lead to design decisions informed by theories, concepts or user observations. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * user research methods that are suitable for gaining understanding about different forms of appropriation * theories and conceptualizations of how appropriations take place, how different factors play part in them, and how they can be affected by design choices * design principles that support appropriation * approaches that link theories and concepts with design * critical viewpoints on the prevailing appropriation-related design and research practice The workshop is targeted at a maximum of 15 participants, in order to ensure effective roundtable discussions in smaller groups. At least one author of each accepted position paper must register for the workshop and for at least one day of the conference. For 2011, Gartner expects the total expenditure on IT to reach 2.5 trillion US dollars (Gartner 2010). Simultaneously, however, a greater number of IS failures are still emerging. The measurement of investments and developed systems’ success, as well as the paradox of high investments and low productivity returns (“productivity paradox”) (Brynjolfsson 1993) therefore remains a top concern for both practitioners and researchers. During the last two and a half decades, research on measuring IS success – the clarification of an important dependent variable in IS research – has been a popular stream of research. A number of models have been proposed in attempts to define IS success (e.g., DeLone and McLean 1992, 1993) and identify the various causes of success or failure respectively, mostly from an individual perspective. Complementary, the research stream on the business value of IT (e.g., Kohli and Grover 2008, Melville et al. 2004) has focused on the benefits from a broader – in most cases the organizational – perspective. Some say that humans are enslaved to modern technology and reject progress on principle, while fanatics of new trends simply must have not only the latest useful tools but every gadget and gimmick as well. We see machines used in daily routines or in research, to make coffee, to save lives, to study secrets of DNA on the micro, and for space travels on the macro scale. The aim of the Conference is to bring together scientists interested in all aspects of theory and practice of man-machine interactions, providing an international forum for exchanging ideas, setting questions for discussion, and sharing the experience. The first ICMMI Conference was held in 2009 and it was dedicated to the memory of Adam Mrózek, distinguished scientist in the area of decision support systems in industrial applications. The event turned out to be such a succes that it has been decided to treat it as the beginning of the cycle of conferences organised biennialy. Authors are encouraged to submit technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research work in the area of Man-Machine Interactions, not currently under review by another conference or journal. Both theoretical and applied papers are of interest for the conference. SUBMISSION OF PAPERS Papers must be submitted electronically via the conference web site. Only papers in PDF will be accepted for reviewing. The primary focus is on original, high quality, and unpublished research- and implementation-related contributions. The editor-in-chief will communicate with the author(s) about the decision, and provide reviews. The goal is to provide the first round of reviews within three months of the paper assignment. The authors with papers requesting major revisions should submit the major revisions within one month after they were informed about the decision. Authors who need more time are kindly requested to contact the Editor. The Editor reserves the right to reject a paper if it does not meet the aims and scope of the journal, it is not technically sound, it is not revised satisfactorily, or if it is inadequate in presentation.
