Subject: [AISWorld] CFP: CAiSE Workshop on Ontology-Driven
IS Engineering
Date: Fri, 10 Dec 2010 15:36:26 +0000
From: Sergio de Cesare <sergio.decesare(a)gmail.com>

*** Call for Papers ***
3rd International Workshop on
Ontology-Driven Information Systems Engineering
co-located with CAiSE 2011 (London, 20-24 June 2011)
http://people.brunel.ac.uk/~cssrssc/events/odise2011
THEME
Information systems (IS) Engineering has progressed considerably over
the decades. Numerous advances, such as improved development
methodologies, languages that enforce recognised software engineering
principles and sophisticated CASE tools, have helped to increase the
quality of IS. Regardless of such progress many IS Engineering
projects remain unsuccessful (e.g., fail to meet stakeholder
requirements, run excessively over budget and far beyond the deadlines
initially scheduled). As the literature points out, most of these
problems are due to (1) the difficulties of capturing and knowing the
business requirements of a living organisational system, (2) realising
such requirements in software designs and implementations and (3)
maintaining an effective level of synchronicity between the needs of
the living system and its information system. The causes underlying
such problems are diverse and difficult to identify. Nonetheless it is
plausible to assume that at the heart of such IS Engineering problems
is the difficulty to conceptualise an organisational system and its
real-world problem domains.
Ontologies are rapidly becoming mainstream within IS engineering as a
means to create conceptual models of the real world that are both
formalised and semantically accurate. Whilst ontologies have been in
recent times widely researched by the Semantic Web and Artificial
Intelligence communities, limited research has been conducted on how
ontologies can help to shape and improve IS Engineering in terms of
both the development process and the conceptual/physical artefacts
produced. Ontologies have the potential to positively drive all phases
of the IS lifecycle, from business modelling to implementation, and
contribute to shape Information Systems Engineering so as to more
effectively evolve software solutions that align with organisational
requirements and address the issues emerging from large complex
families of IT systems.
This workshop is aimed at promoting, investigating and discussing
Ontology-Driven Information Systems Engineering (ODISE, pronounced
odyssey) by bringing together researchers and industrial practitioners
interested is ways in which ontologies can impact IS Engineering. The
scope of ODISE includes broad areas such as: (1) Foundational
ontological principles and paradigms that can influence novel or
existing modelling/programming languages; (2) Improved traceability
between phases and modelled artefacts via ontologies; and (3) Ways in
which ontologies drive or refine typical development phases and the
lifecycle as a whole. More specifically topics include, but are not
limited to:
- Ontology as a means to inform the process of gathering requirements.
- Ontology as a means to inform architecture development directly from
requirements specifications.
- Ontology as a means to inform the software design directly from the
architecture specification.
- Ontology as a means to model the software development process and
the software product itself.
- Ontologies as run-time artefacts or to inform the design of run-time
artefacts.
- The role of ontology reasoning in the software engineering process.
- The role of ontologies in model-driven development.
- Philosophical ontologies (3D vs. 4D) and their role in IS development
- Comparison of different ODISE mechanisms (e.g. domain-specific
modelling, profiling, etc.).
- Comparison of the role of foundational ontologies vs. domain
ontologies in ODISE.
- Ontology driven development of service software.
- Methodological issues for ODISE.
- Problems of semantic mismatch between traditional IS modelling
paradigms, approaches, techniques, etc. and ontological modelling.
- Ontology-based development/modelling/programming languages.
The ODISE workshop is aimed at promoting discussion among the workshop
participants, identifying key research areas of Ontology-Driven
Information Systems Engineering and fostering future research
collaborations in the form of joint research projects and/or papers.

With globalization and heavy competition, companies are
increasingly using information technology to improve their
efficiency, deliver high quality products quicker and
cheaper to the market place, innovate and gain competitive
advantage. With the advent of Web and other enabling
technologies such as Bio and Nano technologies, there is a
growing trend in the convergence of information and
communication technologies in a number of sectors. For
example, in the traditional manufacturing industry, IT
convergence is used to reduce risks and production costs as
well as improve new product design. In the agriculture
sector, IT convergence is revolutionizing farming and
cultivation. Agricultural products, grown under automated
systems (plant factories) and eco-friendly plant management
information systems are in demand. Fisheries use IT
convergence applications to create eco-friendly aquacultures.
Software and Services have always been associated with IT
convergence. However, currently they take on added
importance since the newer computing environments help
design better software and services that accelerate IT
convergence. The case in point is IT convergence in the
telecommunications industry. As the telecom and IT
industries converge, there is a great need for the
convergence of software across the two domains. One issue is
the underlying software engineering methodology for creating
ICT convergence applications. Telecom engineers and software
engineers traditionally use different approaches when
developing services and applications. Should there be a
unified modeling and design approach?
The purpose of this workshop is to provide a forum for
academics and practitioners to identify and explore the
issues, opportunities, and solutions that promote IT
convergence, particularly from the view point of software
engineering and service science. Increasing number of IT
convergence solutions are being developed in different
application domains employing a variety of techniques. This
workshop is intended to increase cross-fertilization of
ideas from these domains, and share the lessons learned. It
is expected to serve as the spring-board for gathering and
disseminating experiences gained in implementing and
integrating IT convergence systems and services in an
industrial setting.
Topics of interest to the workshop include, but are not
limited to:
·Software engineering and IT Convergence
·Analysis and design of IT Convergence solutions
·Requirements analysis for IT Convergence systems
·Service modeling and design for IT Convergence
·Architecture and design issues for IT Convergence
·Service oriented architecture for IT Convergence
·Service Life Cycle and IT Convergence
·Business models for IT Convergence solutions
·Business Agility and IT Convergence
·Innovation management for IT Convergence
·Open source software and IT Convergence
·New product and service development
·Evolution of IT Convergence systems
·Role of Internet in IT Convergence process
·Impact of regulatory and pricing policies on IT Convergence
·IT Convergence in Shipping, Automotive, Construction and
Robotics
·IT Convergence and Green IT
·Telecommunication and IT Convergence
·IT Convergence in Healthcare and Wellness
·Agriculture and IT Convergence
·Security, Privacy and Trust issues in IT Convergence
applications
·Intelligent Systems and Knowledge Management Systems for IT
Convergence

Call for Workshop Proposals
The 2011 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conferences on Web Intelligence
and Intelligent Agent Technology
August 22-27, 2011, Lyon, France
http://wi-iat-2011.org
The Program Committees of the 2011 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Joint
Conference on Web Intelligence and Intelligent Agent Technology
(WI-IAT'11) invite proposals for Workshops. The Workshops will be
held within the Conference, August, 22, 2011 at Lyon, France.
The main goal of the WI-IAT'11 workshops is to stimulate and
facilitate active exchange, interaction and comparison of approaches,
methods and ideas related to specific topics, both theoretical and
applied, in the general areas related to Web Intelligence and
Intelligent Agent Technology. The workshops will provide an informal
setting where participants will have the opportunity to discuss
specific technical topics in an atmosphere that fosters the active
exchange of ideas.
The workshop organizers will be responsible for advertising the
workshop, forming the program committees, reviewing and selecting the
papers, and guaranteeing a high quality worthy of the prestige and
range of the Conference. All papers accepted for workshops will be
included in the Workshop Proceedings published by IEEE Computer
Society Press and will be available at the workshops.
The workshop organizers will also have the discretion of editing
selected papers (after their expansion and revision) into books or
special journal issues. Workshops may be full-day or half-day. A
full-day workshop should select 10-14 regular papers, while a half-day
workshop should select 5-7 regular papers, from a large number of
submissions. Submissions accepted as workshop papers will be allocated
4 pages in the proceedings. The workshop organizers should ensure the
presence of authors of accepted papers at the workshops. Optionally,
the workshop may be started or concluded by a panel focusing on
interesting aspects, controversial issues, or unsolved problems to
stimulate lively, thoughtful, and thought-provoking debate; we expect
the workshop organizers to actively engage the audience and help them
gain a deeper understanding of the issues. The goal of a panel is to
debate and thus panels should always reflect more than one point of
view.
Workshop Proposals Submission:
-----------------------------
Workshop organizers should submit their proposals (PDF) directly to
the three Workshop Chairs via e-mail (see their email addresses
below).
Workshop proposals should include the following elements:
- Title of the workshop

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS:
Engineering and Management for IT-based Services Systems: a Systems Approach
Mini-Track.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
AIM
This mini-track pursues to advance our scientific knowledge (and on the
current limitations and conflicts) on the Foundations of Engineering and
Management for Service Systems under a Systems Approach.
CONTEXT
Service systems can be defined as ?? a value coproduction configuration of
people, technology, other internal and external service systems, and
shared information (such as language, processes, metrics, prices,
policies, and laws.? (Spohrer, 2008). Accordingly, a service can be
defined ?in general- as ?? the application of resources (including
competences, skills, and knowledge) to make changes that have value for
another (system)? (idem, 2008). In particular, it has been identified the
relevance of IT for engineering and management IT services systems
(Demirkan,& Goul, 2006; Rai& Sambamurthy, 2006; Beachboard et al. 2007;
Zhao et al. 2007). Additionally, because service systems are also systems,
their essential and shared attributes for general systems (Ackoff, 1971;
Gelman& Garcia, 1989; Mora et al. 2009) should be considered. A Systems
Approach research approach (Ackoff et al., 1962; Checkland, 2000) can be
defined as an answering and problem-solving system comprised of: (i)
systemic philosophical paradigms (P?s: an ontological, epistemological and
axiological stance on the world): (ii) systemic theoretical frameworks
(F?s: ideas-constructs, theories, and models); (iii) systemic
methodologies (M?s: methods, techniques, and instruments), and (iv)
situational areas identified as systems (A?s: natural, artificial or
social objects, artifacts and subjects under study). This mini-track calls
for
papers that contribute to improve our scientific knowledge on quasi-stable
and emergent research the Engineering and Management of IT-based Service
Systems (ITSS) (references are available upon request).

Subject: [SEWORLD] CfP IEEE Software special issue - Climate Change:
Software, Science and Society
Date: Sun, 5 Dec 2010 15:59:01 -0500
From: Steve Easterbrook <sme(a)cs.toronto.edu>
To: seworld(a)sigsoft.org <seworld(a)sigsoft.org>
IEEE Software
Special Issue on
Climate Change: Software, Science and Society
Submission Deadline: 8 April 2011
Publication (tentative): Nov/Dec 2011
A vast software infrastructure underpins our ability to understand climate change, assess the implications, and form suitable policy responses. This software infrastructure allows large teams of scientists to construct very complex models out of many interlocking parts, and further allows scientists, activists and policymakers to share data, explore scenarios, and validate assumptions. The extent of this infrastructure is often invisible (as infrastructure often is, until it breaks down), both to those who rely on it, and to interested observers, such as politicians, journalists, and the general public. Yet weaknesses in this software (whether real or imaginary) will impede our ability to make progress on what may be the biggest challenge faced by humanity in the 21st Century.
This special issue of IEEE Software will explore the challenges in developing the software infrastructure for understanding and responding to climate change. Our aim is to help bridge the gap between the software community and the climate science community, by soliciting a collection of articles that explain the nature and extent of this software infrastructure, the technical challenges it poses, and the current state-of-the-art.
We invite papers covering any of the software challenges involved in creating this technical infrastructure, but please note that we are not soliciting papers that discuss the validity of the science itself, or which take sides in the policy debate on climate change.
We especially welcome review papers, which explain the current state-of-the-art in some specific aspect of climate software in an accessible way, and roadmap papers, which describe the challenges in the construction and validation of this software. Suitable topics for the special issue include (but are not restricted to):
- Construction, verification and validation of computational models and data analysis tools used in climate science;
- Frameworks, coupling strategies and software integration issues for earth system modeling;
- Challenges of scale and complexity in climate software, including high data volumes and throughputs, massive parallelization and performance issues, numerical complexity, and coupling complexity;
- Challenges of longevity and evolution of climate models codes, including legacy code, backwards compatibility, and computational reproducibility;
- Experiences with model ensembles and model inter-comparison projects, particularly as these relate to software verification and validation;
- Meta-data standards and data management for earth system data, including the challenge of making models and data self-describing;
- Coordination of cross-disciplinary teams in the development of integrated assessment and decision support systems;
- The role of open science and usable simulation tools in increasing public accessibility of climate science and public participation in climate policy discussions;
- Case studies and lessons learned from application of software engineering techniques within climate science.
Manuscripts must not exceed 4,700 words including figures and tables, which count for 200 words each. Submissions in excess of these limits may be rejected without refereeing. The articles we deem within the theme's scope will be peer-reviewed and are subject to editing for magazine style, clarity, organization, and space. Be sure to include the name of the theme you are submitting for.
Articles should have a practical orientation, and be written in a style accessible to software practitioners. Overly complex, purely research-oriented or theoretical treatments are not appropriate. Articles should be novel. IEEE Software does not republish material published previously in other venues, including other periodicals and formal conference/workshop proceedings, whether previous publication was in print or in electronic form.

Betreff: [WI] CfP: European Workshop on Smart Objects

7th European Workshop on Smart Objects:
Systems, Technologies and Applications
RFID-SysTech 2011
May 17th to May 18th, 2011
Dresden, Germany

----------------------------------------------------------
Over the last years, the European Workshop on RFID Systems and
Technologies has become a central platform in Europe for personal
networking and information exchange in the field of RFID technologies
and applications.
While the networking of objects for the purpose of data collection and
distributed control is no longer a recent phenomenon, the sheer number of
things that are networked to information systems has dramatically risen. Today,
the Internet is increasingly extended to all kinds of physical assets: product
components, finished products, logistic units, equipment, documents, vehicles,
buildings and electronic meters as well as embedded systems of all kind. Mature
industries, like the energy or automotive are in euphoric mood and accordingly,
we see enormous research and technological development activity: For instance,
Auto-ID technologies such as RFID are being increasingly combined with data
storage capacity and sensors or other communication devices that provide
real-time data such as position, temperature, pressure, vibrations etc. These
special-purpose computer systems are able to sense information from the real
world or perform actions upon it and are also able to communicate with other
networked computer systems.
The resultant integration into existing business processes and IT
infrastructures under the side condition of enabling an interaction
between intelligent objects and business applications within and between
enterprises in a generic, flexible and scalable manner is a considerable
challenge. At the same time, the economic potential is promising and will also
help enterprises to address completely new challenges such as sustainability:
Interacting with smart devices will ensure that enterprises get correct,
auditable trails for sustainability metrics. Such systems can help businesses
track carbon and other environmental aspects. However, business-to-business
integration solutions such as the EPCglobal network or other bilateral
approaches have to be developed further in order to meet the supporting
requirements.
The specific profile of this workshop is to examine both the technology
and business aspects:
- the latest achievements in technologies and systems for smart objects
- their integration into information systems and business processes
- and their business value.
Scientists and practitioners from the fields of electrical engineering,
computer science and information systems will find an excellent
opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary discussions, set up new
networks and exchange information on a professional level. In addition
to the workshop, an industrial exhibition presenting the latest
innovations will be held.
Don’t miss the chance to attend this workshop!

IET Software Call for Papers
SPECIAL ISSUE ON: Web and Requirements Engineering
IET Software's JCR Impact Factor increased by 20% to 0.620
in 2010.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
In the last decade, the number and complexity of Web-based
software systems and the amount of information they offer
has been continuously growing. In the context of Software
Engineering, design methods and methodologies were
introduced to provide mechanisms to develop these complex
Web applications and Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) in a
systematic way. Most of these methodologies focus on
implementation and neglect other tasks such as requirement
analysis and quality management. Although the relevance of
Requirements Engineering is well known these techniques
should be studied more widely in the Web Engineering
community due to the complexity of Web Engineering problems
(such as the changing nature of the stakeholders or the
diversity of Web-related requirements). On the other hand,
Requirements Engineering is a complex activity whose success
depends on stakeholder participation. Therefore, the
techniques proposed in the Requirements Engineering field
need a more participative environment to support effective
collaboration among stakeholders. In this context, the Web
(especially Web 2.0 applications), provide a convenient
platform that supports active participation by stakeholders
in the Requirements Engineering process.
Topics of primary interest include, but are not limited to:
--------------------------------------------------------------
* Web requirements elicitation and analysis
* Web requirements validation and verification
* Web engineering methods and tools supporting requirements
* Traceability in Web requirements
* Modeling of requirements, goals, and domains in Web
* Prototyping and simulation in Web requirements
engineering
* Evolution of Web requirements
* Alignment between business and Web requirements
* Social, cultural, and cognitive factors in Web
requirements engineering
* User-centred analysis and design
* Domain specific modelling languages addressing
requirements for Web applications
* Web 2.0 and requirements engineering
* Requirements engineering for rich internet applications
* Model-driven approaches based on requirements models for
Web applications and rich internet applications
All papers must be submitted through the journal's
Manuscript Central system:
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/iet-SEN
