Subject: [AISWorld] Special Issue: Social Media in Higher
Education
Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2010 16:09:33 +0000
From: Stefan Hrastinski <stefanhr(a)kth.se>
To: <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org> <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue: Social Media in Higher Education
in The Internet and Higher Education
The social media hype has created a lot of speculation among educators on how these media can be used to support learning. In this special issue, we would like to explore how social media can be taken advantage of in higher education to support informal and formal learning. It is well agreed upon that most learning takes place outside school in our everyday lives. On campuses, there are common spaces such as hallways, lounges, libraries, and cafés, which support informal learning better than classrooms or lecture-halls. Social media have potential to support learning in both informal and formal settings, as well as creating an entirely new setting in which learning may take place. We can learn a lot from how students are already using such media to support learning in each of these areas.
Although most would agree that emerging social media support learning in new ways, we still know little about how students currently use social media to support learning. Prensky put forth the dichotomy of “digital natives” and “digital immigrants” when arguing that technology has dramatically changed the way students of higher education live and learn. Similar arguments have labeled today’s students the net generation, millenials, homo zappiens, generation M and generation Y – labels intended to differentiate their relationship to and use of technology from that of previous generations of learners. However, a growing body of literature questions whether there is really a sharp and fundamental break between today’s young people and previous generations in terms of their adeptness with technology and how they learn. Although we see today’s youth using many social media tools, some tools are more frequently used by older people. Similarly, some are readily adopted by students for personal use, whereas other social media tools have been relegated to as-required or as-assigned use and have been met with resistance. Thus, there are many perceptions of the role social media plays in education, some of which are myths and other are realities. We believe it is time to go beyond the simple dichotomies of the digital natives debate in order to understand how emerging social media can support students’ informal and formal learning. We need to move forward from saying that “students learn in new ways” towards conducting rigorous research that can help us understand the role of social media in higher education.
In this issue, we seek articles that present the outcome of rigorous studies of social media use in higher education as well as articles that help provide strong theoretical guidance for the directions future research might take.
Authors are requested to submit manuscripts to The Internet and Higher Education via the Elsevier Editorial System (EES) no later than March 15, 2011. You need to select “Social Media in Higher Ed” when you reach the “Article Type” step in the submission process. Contact the Special Issue Editors if additional information is required:

Subject: [AISWorld] GITMA 2011 Doctoral Student Consortium
Date: Fri, 26 Nov 2010 16:21:21 -0800
From: Alexander Mcleod <amcleod(a)unr.edu>
To: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
GITMA 2011 Doctoral Student Consortium
GITMA's 2011 annual Doctoral Student Consortium is an
engaging, interactive professional experience designed to
help participants successfully launch their academic
careers. We are pleased to have the sponsorship of GITMA and
the University of Whitewater at Wisconsin.
Who Should Attend?
The Doctoral Consortium is offered to individuals who are
well into their doctoral studies. A variety of students with
backgrounds in management information systems, management
science, strategy, operations management, organizational
behavior, marketing, international business and other areas
will increase the vitality of the sessions. The program will
focus on career goals, job search issues, placement
services, research strategies, teaching effectiveness,
manuscript reviewing, and promotion and tenure. Students who
are interested in addressing these subjects in a
participative, interactive way will enjoy and benefit from
the Consortium.
Why Should You Attend?
There are several important reasons why you should attend.
1. Networking -- getting a job, finding collaborators, and
gaining advantages in the career you are about to enter are
all related to "who you know." This is your chance to meet
and get to know some of the leading researchers and
educators in the field.
2. Skill development -- excellent teaching and research
require practical skills in addition to content knowledge.
You will learn from veterans who will share their secrets to
success.
3. Furthering your research -- the research incubator will
give you a chance to engage in a discussion of your research
ideas with your peers and with outstanding researchers.
4. Learn about GITMA -- this is a chance to learn more about
GITM, its people, its processes (such as its panels and
social networking events ), and its opportunities.
5. Fun! -- come socialize with your current and future
colleagues in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Program Content
The Doctoral Student Consortium involves seasoned,
world-class research faculty from several schools, junior
faculty just beginning their careers, and key journal
editors. All will help guide discussions on the following
topics: Surviving and Acing Your Dissertation, Teaching
Effectiveness, Research Strategy, Meet the Editors and
Academic Reviewing, Job Search.
Join Us
The Doctoral Consortium does more than prepare individual
students, it creates a community of colleagues you'll know
throughout your career. Please plan to attend the Consortium
and also encourage your student colleagues to participate in
this important program. Although many participants will be
entering the job market in the near future, others will
appreciate the opportunity to get a better understanding of
an academic career and how to approach the job market the
following year.
Application Process
Doctoral students working in the area of Global Information
Technology/Systems Management are encouraged to apply for
the GITMA 2011 Doctoral Consortium. Those wishing to be
included should submit:
1. A current curriculum vita, including contact information
(e-mail in particular), your major field (MIS, Global IS,
management science, strategy, project management, operations
management, global supply chain management, and so on), the
title of your dissertation proposal or the title of a
current research paper.
2. A letter of recommendation from your dean, doctoral
program director, department chair, or dissertation chair.
The letter should attest to the applicant's qualifications
and good progress in the doctoral program. Interested
students are encouraged to apply early if they wish to
ensure themselves space in the Consortium. Materials should
be sent to the Doctoral Consortium Co-Coordinators, by
January 30, 2011. Those who apply by this date and meet the
criteria listed above will be accepted for participation.
Applications received after January 30, 2011 will receive
consideration on a space-available basis.
3. A summary draft of your dissertation to date by January
30, 2011. This should include the research question/s and
objectives, and research methodology. This will allow the
mentor to look over the materials and offer some feedback
(e.g., an organization that could help with data collection,
design of a qualitative study or a quantitative study such
as survey instrument/lab experiment and so forth).
Participants must pay the regular student registration fee
for the annual meeting, but there will be no additional
charge for the Consortium. This fee includes the luncheon
and reception on Saturday, the networking luncheon on
Sunday, and the CD-ROM of the proceedings. There will be a
small, competitive $200 grant available to five qualified
doctoral students in attendance at GITM 2011. Although
students will be responsible for all of their own travel and
accommodation expenses, it is customary for participants'
schools to provide monetary support for these purposes.
Consortium participants will be recognized in GITMA 2011's
proceedings. They also receive special recognition in the
placement system, special designation on their name badges,
and an introduction to the larger Global IT Management
community at the breakfast and plenary session.

We as academics have the good fortune to be further protected by our academic freedom. With freedom comes responsibility: the responsibility to use that freedom to do what we can to ensure that the world of the future be one in which there is not only greater economic prosperity, but also more social justice. Call for Workshop Proposals
ACM Hypertext 2011
Deadline: 2010-12-29
==================================================================
ACM Hypertext 2011 will be running workshops and tutorials, taking
place on June 6th, the day before the start of the main conference.
The purpose of the workshops is to provide a more informal setting
where participants can exchange ideas on a focused topic and suggest
directions for future research. As such, they also offer a good
opportunity for (young) researchers to present their work and to
obtain feedback from an interested community.
Acceptance of workshop proposals will be based on the organizer's
experience and background in the topic, and on the relevance of the
subject matter w.r.t. the topics addressed in the main conference.
Proposals for Workshops should include the following elements:
* Title and acronym;
* Name(s), affiliation(s), mailing address(es) and e-mail
address(es) of the proposers;
* A description of the topic and motivation of the workshop
(not exceeding 500 words);
* A short description of the target audience;
* A first version of the Call for Papers;
* Type of the workshop (full-day or half-day);
* Arrangements for the organization of the workshop, including
a brief outline of the workshop describing anticipated format,
possible session names, invited talks, panels, demos;
* A short description on how the workshop will be advertised so
as to ensure a sufficiently wide range of authors and high quality
papers along with an estimation of the number of participants;
* Names, addresses, and home page links of people who have agreed to
be part of the workshop program committee;
* A brief description of the organizers' experience and background
in the topic, and links to homepages of the workshop chairs.
The organizers are encouraged to provide the following additional
information:
* A preliminary list of reviewers
* A list of potential authors
* A list of potential attendees
Proposals should be submitted electronically as a single PDF file to the
workshop co-chairs:
Martin Atzmueller (atzmueller(a)cs.uni-kassel.de)
Mykola Pechenizkiy (m.pechenizkiy(a)tue.nl)
After the acceptance of a workshop proposal the organizer(s) should:
* Create and distribute a Call for Papers and a Call for
Participation;
* Create a Web page for the workshop, the link of which will be
published on the Conference Web site;
* Create a Program Committee;
* Review and select contributions to be included in the workshop
proceedings (at least 2 reviewers for each paper);
* Schedule and coordinate the workshop activities.
* Put together accepted papers into electronic workshop proceedings
and make them available online.
Workshop Proposals:
December 29, 2010: Workshop/Tutorial submissions due
January 3, 2011: Notification to proposers
January 10, 2011: The organizers of each workshop send out the Call for
Papers
June 6th, 2011: Workshop day
