CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on
Principled Design and Evaluation of Adaptive Systems
User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction:
The Journal of Personalization Research
(An international journal published by Springer Verlag)
Web site: http://www.easy-hub.org/umuai/
=========================================
The importance and benefits of involving users in the design and
evaluation of adaptive systems has been advocated for a long time.
In fact, user studies have become an integral part of papers
published in the UMUAI journal, and indeed most papers published
in the major conferences in the area. Although this is most
definitely indicative of increasing maturity in the field, we are
far from having solved all related outstanding issues:
* Most papers report summative evaluations, aiming to establish
the extent to which the use of an adaptation method has improved
the system. Often more scientific insight can be gained from
formative evaluations that inform and guide the development
process of adaptive systems.
* Most papers report on a single evaluation activity, often
assessing the system as a whole only. More principled and rigorous
forms of evaluation are possible, in which different system layers
or components are evaluated separately, and more is learned about
what causes success (or, more importantly in some cases, failure).
* Certain success criteria have received a lot more attention than
others. For example, for recommender systems, the focus has often
been on recall and precision, rather than serendipity, privacy and
trust. A more holistic approach to evaluation is needed, including
the consideration of trade-offs between criteria. Metrics and
methods for evaluating new criteria are also needed.
This special issue aims to create a new point of reference for the
evaluation of adaptive systems, bringing future evaluations to the
next level. Rather than just encouraging evaluation studies, the
goal of this special issue is to reflect the current body of
knowledge on evaluation methods and methodologies for different
types of user adaptive systems. We expect contributions will
address the following core categories:
* Papers describing novel methods that can be used for the user-
centred design and formative evaluation of adaptive systems.
* Papers demonstrating the value and benefit of success criteria
used in the evaluation of adaptive systems, validating concrete
evaluation metrics, or considering trade-offs between different
criteria.
* Papers describing frameworks for the principled design and
evaluation of adaptive systems, that may provide guidance and
serve as the theoretical underpinnings of future studies.
All papers in the issue will undergo stringent peer-review. Papers
proposing a new evaluation method, framework, or criteria will
need to validate these proposals, for example through case studies
and / or surveys.
Authors will be expected to position their work in relation to a
framework for the principled design and evaluation of adaptive
systems, which will be summarized by the editors in an
introductory article. This framework has been developed over the
course of several international workshops (see http://www.easy-hub.org/workshops/) and preliminary material for prospective
contributors to the special issue has been made available on the
issue's web site (see http://www.easy-hub.org/umuai/layered.dot).
To provide a coherent point of reference, authors are also
expected to cross-reference their accepted submissions to each
other, where applicable, in a second round of editing.
Articles that describe a traditional global summative evaluation
of an adaptive system should be submitted to the regular track of
UMUAI rather than this special issue (contact the editors if in
doubt).
HOW TO SUBMIT
Submissions to the special issue should follow the UMUAI
formatting guidelines and submission instructions available at:
http://www.umuai.org/paper_submission.html
Each submission should note that it is intended for the Special
Issue on Principled Design and Evaluation of Adaptive Systems.
Potential authors are asked to submit a tentative title and short
abstract (which can be altered for the actual submission) to
assist in the formation of a panel of appropriate reviewers.
UMUAI is an archival journal that publishes mature and
substantiated research results on the (dynamic) adaptation of
computer systems to their human users, and the role that a model
of the system about the user plays in this context. Many articles
in UMUAI are quite comprehensive and describe the results of
several years of work. Consequently, UMUAI gives "unlimited" space
to authors (so long as what they write is important). Authors
whose paper exceeds 40 pages in journal format (including
illustrations and references) are however requested to supply a
short justification upon submission that explains why a briefer
discussion of their research results would not be advisable.
IMPORTANT DATES
Deadline for submission of title and abstract: January 4, 2010
Deadline for paper submissions: February 1, 2010
REVIEW PROCESS
Submissions will undergo the normal review process, and will be
reviewed by three established researchers selected from a panel of
reviewers formed for the special issue. Barring unforeseen
problems, authors can expect to be notified regarding the review
results within three months of submission.

Diagrams 2010
Sixth International Conference on the
Theory and Application of Diagrams
http://www.diagrams-conference.org/2010/
diagrams2010(a)diagrams-conference.org
9-11 August 2010
Portland, Oregon, USA
****************************************************************
Diagrams is an international and interdisciplinary conference series,
covering all aspects of research on the theory and application of
diagrams.
Recent advances in technology have enabled the use of diagrams, sketches
and other visualizations to become an integral part of our lives. For
effective communication with these novel and sophisticated visual
representations, we need insight into how diagrams are used, how they are
represented, which types are available and when it is appropriate to use
them. These concerns have triggered a surge of interest in the study of
diagrammatic notations for communication, cognition, creative thought,
computation and problem-solving.
The study of diagrammatic notations and their use must be pursued as an
interdisciplinary endeavour. Diagrams is the only conference series that
provides a united forum for all areas that are concerned with the study of
diagrams: for example, architecture, artificial intelligence, cartography,
cognitive science, computer science, education, graphic design, history of
science, human-computer interaction, linguistics, logic, mathematics,
philosophy, psychology, and software modelling.
Diagrams 2010 is the sixth event in this conference series, which was
launched in Edinburgh in 2000. Diagrams attracts a large number of
researchers from virtually all related fields mentioned, placing the
conference as a major international event in the area.
Diagrams 2010 will be co-located with the 32nd Annual Meeting of the
Cognitive Science Society (Cogsci-2010). This co-location will provide a
lively and stimulating environment, enabling researchers from related
communities to exchange ideas and more widely disseminate research
results.
Diagrams 2010 will consist of sessions including presentations of refereed
papers, posters, and also tutorial and workshop sessions. For the first
time in history of Diagrams we will organize workshops and postgraduate
student sessions. We invite submissions of:

- short research papers (7 pages)
- posters (3 pages)
- tutorial proposals (1 page; see the conference web page for full
details)
- workshop proposals (1 page; see the conference web page for full
details)
that focus on any aspect of diagrams research. Long papers should present
original research results. Short papers and posters should present
original research contributions, position or problem statements, summarise
software to support the use of diagrams, or integrate results published
elsewhere which are of interest to the Diagrams community.
All submissions will be fully peer reviewed. The proceedings will be
published by Springer in their Lecture Notes in Computer Science series,
www.springer.com/lncs.
Full details on the preparation of submissions can be found on the
conference web site www.diagrams-conference.org/2010/
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Call for Papers - due September 4th
The widespread adoption of Web 2.0 related technologies has facilitated
user collaboration and knowledge sharing. Thanks to these technologies,
collaborative communities are today one of the emerging trends in the ICT
area. Notable examples of collaborative communities are those in online
social networks, where users are able to establish relationships with
other users, possibly of different types and for purposes that may concern
business, entertainment, religion, dating, etc, and also they are able to
enforce information sharing based on these relationships. As such, social
networks represent a natural place for collaborative communities.
Collaborative tools based on the social networking paradigm, i.e.,
collaborative social network, are today more and more used not only by
single users, but also at the enterprise level to communicate, share
information, taking decisions, and doing business. This is in line with
the emerging trend known as Enterprise 2.0 As such, the existence of
collaborative social networks that can be used for various reasons creates
both interesting opportunities and challenges.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers in various
disciplines to explore the effect of social networks on collaborative
applications. Our ultimate goal is to foster communication and
collaboration across disciplines to enable interdisciplinary approaches
for collaborative social networks.
CollaborateSN-2009 will be held in conjunction with the 5th International
Conference on Collaborative Computing: Networking, Applications and
Worksharing, (CollaborateCom-2009), which is jointly sponsored by IEEE CS,
Create-Net, the International Computer Sciences, and Social Informatics
and Telecommunications Engineering (ICST).
We solicit unpublished research papers that address various aspects of
online social network based collaborative applications. Topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:
* Models of privacy and security related to collaborative social
networks and social networks
* Social network analysis and mining for collaborative applications
* Access control models and solutions for collaborative social
networks
* Studies of user needs and behaviors for various collaborate
applications in social networks

Track IKT-gestützte Unternehmenskommunikation
Multikonferenz Wirtschaftsinformatik (MKWI) 2010
23. - 25. Februar 2010, Universität Göttingen
Paper Deadline: 20.09.2009
http://www.mkwi2010.de/de/108031.html
Leitung des Tracks:
Prof. Dr. Jorge Marx Gómez, Universität Oldenburg (Koordinator)
PD Dr. Ralf Isenmann, Universität Bremen
Inhalt:
Interaktivität, Partizipation und Stakeholder-Dialog)
- Managementansätze (z. B. Organisational Intelligence als Management
von Information, Wissen und Meinung, Wissensmanagement, Organizational
Memory)
- Einbindung in das M- bzw. E-Business und organisatorische Verankerung
(z. B. Mobile Communications, Electronic Communications, E-Organisation)
- Einsatz von Web-2.0-Technologien zur Unternehmenskommunikation (z. B.
RSS, SocialBookmarking, Wikis, Blogs)
- Theoretische Aspekte (z. B. Benutzermodellierung,
Geschäftsprozessgestaltung, Document Engineering, Software Engineering)
- IKT-Systeme und Software-Werkzeuge zur Unterstützung der
Unternehmenskommunikation
- Wirtschaftlichkeit und Kosten/Nutzen-Analysen der IKT-unterstützten
Kommunikation
- weitere Themen

These three kinds of review will support the selection process of those papers/abstracts that will be accepted for their presentation at the conference, as well as those to be selected for their publication in JSCI Journal.
Pre-Conference and Post-conference Virtual sessions (via electronic forums) will be held for each session included in the conference program, so that sessions papers can be read before the conference, and authors presenting at the same session can interact during one week before and after the conference. Authors can also participate in peer-to-peer reviewing in virtual sessions.
Submissions for Face-to-Face or for Virtual Participation are both accepted. Both kinds of submissions will have the same reviewing process and the accepted papers will be included in the same proceedings.
Authors of accepted papers who registered in the conference can have access to the evaluations and possible feedback provided by the reviewers who recommended the acceptance of their papers/abstracts, so they can accordingly improve the final version of their papers. Non-registered authors will not have access to the reviews of their respective submissions.
Registration fees of an effective invited session organizer will be waived according to the policy described in the web page (click on 'Invited Session', then on 'Benefits for the Organizers of Invited Sessions'), where you can get information about the ten benefits for an invited session organizer. For Invited Sessions Proposals, please visit the conference web site, or directly to http://www.2010iiisconferences.org/ccct/organizer.asp
Authors of the best 10%-20% of the papers presented at the conference (included those virtually presented) will be invited to adapt their papers for their publication in the Journal of Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics.

CALL FOR PAPERS
First International Conference on Exploring Services Science
(IESS 1.0)
Geneva, Switzerland, February 17-18-19, 2010
http://iess.unige.ch/
OVERVIEW
========
Services Science is not a cosmetic change of existing things. Introduced
by IBM in 2002, it has now emerged and matured in a true
trans-disciplinary atmosphere. Encompassing disciplines not only in
management and engineering, it also draws from disciplines such as social
and cognitive sciences, law, ethics, economics etc. to address the
theoretical and practical aspects of the challenging services industry and
its economy.
Services Science leverages methods, results and knowledge stemming from
these disciplines towards the development of its own concepts, methods,
techniques and approaches thus creating the basis for true
trans-disciplinary gatherings and the production of trans-disciplinary
results. Services Science is building a concrete framework for
trans-disciplinary purposes.
Thus service must be considered in this conference with its multiple
facets: economic, organizational, social, collective, ontological,
regulatory, secure, etc. and also, of course, implemented by means of
informatics. Sometimes it is referred to as information services to
distinguish its restricted meanings in various disciplines like Economy or
Informatics.
The goal of this first conference is to build upon this growing community
to further study and understand this emerging discipline. Academics,
researchers and practitioners of all disciplines are expected to
contribute their results and approaches to Services Science in a
trans-disciplinary setting. In order to achieve the best possible mix of
disciplines and their representation, the conference is structured around
Service research topics, which are trans-disciplinary and around Service
contexts, which are more disciplinary oriented.
The contributions should address one or several topics, be grounded in one
or several contexts and be open to trans-disciplinary approaches.
RESEARCH TOPICS
===============
Research topics follow the Services lifecycle and include (not limited to)
the following subtopics. Contributions addressing more than one topic are
encouraged.
1. Service innovation: Value models, Innovation/Creation process, Business
trends, Technological trends, People trends, Service innovation and
strategy.
2. Service exploration: Consumer service needs modeling, Supplier service
modeling, Business services requirements modeling, Service information &
process modeling, Service exploration process.
3. Service design : Service design methodologies and patterns, Service and
re-design of organization of activities, Service co-design environments,
tools, Requirements oriented towards services, Design of complex services,
Service compliance with laws and regulations, Service security and safety.
4. Service engineering: Ontologies and interoperability, Web-services,
Service-oriented architectures, Ubiquitous & mobile computing, Service
orchestration, choreography, composition, COTS, Enterprise architectures,
Service security and safety engineering.
5. Service sustainability:
- IT service management: IT governance, Compliance with laws and
regulations;
- IS service management: Project management for IS services, Service
evolution, QoS management (e.g. performance, trust, security, utility,
usability), Business intelligence;
- Service management: Service operations & marketing, Services and
strategy, Future trends in services.
CONTEXTS OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS
=============================
The contexts of the contributions reflect the trans-disciplinary
atmosphere of Services Science and the particular role of information
technology (IT) within them: they are organized along four main
dimensions:
- the first one addresses Services on a disciplinary/sector basis;
- the second one covers IT;
- the third one addresses the emergent foundations of the Science of
Services;
- the last one covers aspects of governance and management.
Contributions addressing more that one of these themes are encouraged.
1. Sectors and services
Contributions are sought from specialists to help uncover how, as
specialists in their own sectors, they implicitly or explicitly use this
notion of Services. The list of sectors include (not limited to) Services
in: Public administration, Government and Citizen, Banking, Finance and
Insurance Services, Food and Agriculture, Geo localization, Education,
Entertainment, Healthcare, Environment and Sustainable Development, Legal,
Engineering, Linguistics, Culture, Tourism and Hospitality.
2. IT and services
Information Technology (IT) is traditionally structured around isolated or
siloed services. Services Science has now opened a whole scientific domain
where such technologies offer opportunities for emerging interoperable
scientific knowledge patterns among them as well as with other
disciplines.
Contributions are sought from specialists to help uncover how to integrate
IT into a trans-disciplinary process geared towards the development and
management of Services. This includes (not limited to) IT in: Mobiles,
ubiquitous and ambient technologies, Multimedia technologies, Grid and
utility computing, SOA, Security, Collaborative systems, Social networking
systems.
3. Foundations of Services Science
Given the variety of contexts for Services, it is necessary to study,
build and strengthen the scientific foundations of Services Science.
Contributions are sought to discover what is the common knowledge, what
are the common scientific frameworks and methodologies of Services
Science. Topics may cover (not limited to): Service evolution and
customization, Service for interoperating knowledge of various
disciplines, Ontologies for services, Interoperable services, composition
of services, Integration of services into information systems, Integration
services into organizations, Collaborative and trans-disciplinary methods
for developing services, Service methods, service life cycle, Service
economics, Service governance, risk and compliance, Security, trust in
services.
4. Governance and management
Fully dematerialized organisations and societies require revisiting and
adapting, through trans-disciplinary approaches, theories and practices,
which have dominated product oriented economies in the past. Contributions
are sought from specialists to set up the fundamentals of such
dematerialized organizations at the global level and to analyze the
transformation process of product-oriented economies towards
service-oriented economies.
How do we market and monetize services? What is supply chain in services?
What is service risk management? Topics in governance and management of
dematerialized organizations and societies include (not limited to) :
Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, accounting and cost accounting,
Planning and forecasting, Strategy and innovation, Logistics, Business
administration, Management of Services.
