01./02.10.2009 an der TU Dresden, Fakultät Informatik
Virtual Enterprises, Communities & Social Networks
fluiden Netzwerken zusammen (Virtuelle Unternehmen); E-Commerce-Systeme,
Online-Auktionen, Portale, Diskussionsforen u. v. m. lassen Gemeinschaften

Call for Participation
Scientific Writing and New Patterns of Scientific Communication
Workshop in association with the
5th International Conference on e-Social Science,
Maternushaus, Cologne, 24-25 June 2009
Workshop organisers: Julian Newman (Glasgow Caledonian University), Esther
Breuer (University of Cologne)
http://www.ncess.ac.uk/events/conference-09/
This workshop aims to promote dialogue and debate around the
interrelationships among scientific writing, language learning and use,
and the impact of web culture and Web 2.0 technologies upon the practice
and communication of science. On the one hand it has been held that the
linguistic styles of web culture are at odds with the academic conventions
of attribution in the cumulative effort that is science. On the other
hand, the Open Science movement claims that massively distributed
collaboration can be brought about by making clear accounts of methods,
data and results freely available on the internet.
Scientific writing is difficult to learn. In particular, the writer must
learn to construct an argument within the conventions of a discipline,
balancing the need to show originality with the need to ground the
argument in a body of existing knowledge and relevance structure.
Appropriate use of citation, and setting citation within appropriate
argumentation, is a significant aspect of writing skill. Learners, to a
greater or lesser extent, model their writing on sources which they treat
as exemplars: however learning to cite is a complex skill that is
developed in conjunction with the use of argumentation. The workshop
starts, therefore, from the position that the Web agenda for scientific
communication should take account of research on learning to communicate
and of research on argumentation support, as well as of the potential of
Web technologies to create environments that can promote access to shared
scientific content.
Recent controversies surrounding new methods of scholarly communication,
exploiting so-called "Web 2.0" technologies, implicitly raise issues
concerning the need for science to be communicated in multiple genres. New
forms of communication for scientists, influenced by "Web 2.0", include
specialised "social networking sites" sometimes referred to as "MySpace
for Scientists" which host blogs and discussion boards, and may support
the setting up of collaborations, "referral sites" which support the
tagging of interesting items from the literature, and/or online reference
management, Wikipedia-type secondary information sources and online videos
of experiments and/or visualised data. Scientists have always had
informal registers for "talking shop", discriminable from the
communications of the formal journal paper: the issue inevitably arises,
whether they now need to develop special writing or production skills for
the dissemination of ideas and results in new media. Will this require
unlearning the current academic conventions, or learning to code-switch
between paper and web styles and registers?
The organisers welcome contributions from researchers and practitioners
involved in these problems from a wide range of disciplines and
specialisms. Participants should submit a position-paper of around 2000
words by 4th May 2009. The final workshop programme will be published on
18th May 2009.
The workshop will take place on the first day of the conference, 24th May
2009. The fee for attendance at the workshop only will be £150 or £65 for
students (earlybird rate, available until 26th April 2009). [Full
conference £300/£150.] Prospective workshop participants requiring a
response to their submission before 26th April should submit a draft of
their position paper by 22nd April.
Submission of position papers: Please email as an attachment to
esciencewriting(a)googlemail.com
Please use one of the following file formats:
 MS Word Compatibility Format (.doc)
 RTF
 PDF
 HTML

CALL FOR PAPERS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Workshop on Exploiting Structured Information on the Web (ESIW 2009)
in conjunction with
10th International Conference on Web Information Systems
Engineering (WISE 2009)
Poznań, Poland
October 5-7, 2009

Submission deadline: May 1, 2009
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
In recent years we observe growing availability of structured
information on the Web. While significant part of it is in a human
readable form, not adapted for automated processing (HTML, AJAX,
Flash, Deep Web, Web applications), more machine-processable
information enters the Web thanks to complementary top-down and
bottom-up tendencies.
Bottom-up tendencies are related to publication of structured
information in a machine-processable form (e.g. in XML, RDF, JSON). It
also covers annotation of unstructured content with meta-data (e.g.
microformats, RDFa, SIOC, MPEG-7). Top-down approaches are related to
algorithmically structuring unstructured information. They combine
different methods of Web mining, information extraction,
classification, categorization, automated linking and named entities
recognition. Moreover, phenomena combining these tendencies, such as
social annotation of resources, are widely present in today’s Web.
More structured information on the Web enables information integration
using shared vocabularies (linked data approach), data mashups
(domain-specific integration), and automated algorithmic information
integration (schemas matching, dataspaces, lexical techniques). In
parallel, popularization of mashup, data monitoring and social data
sharing techniques, enable easier information reuse and growing number
of intelligent services combing various dynamic information sources,
algorithms and explicit or implicit users input.
The ESIW 2009 workshop will adopt a multi-disciplinary approach to
current tendencies in exploiting structured information on the Web.
The workshop will provide an informal and vibrant forum for
researchers and industry practitioners to share their research results
and practical development experiences.

First International Workshop on Organizational Design and Engineering
Call for Papers
Dates and Venue
13 and 14 December 2009. Ancillary event preceding the International
Conference on Information Systems (ICIS 2009) in Phoenix, Arizona, USA
Executive Chairs
Rodrigo Magalhães, Kuwait–Maastricht Business School and Instituto Superior
Tecnico, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal
António Rito Silva, Instituto Superior Tecnico, Technical University of
Lisbon, Portugal
Program Committee, keynotes and background: see workshop web site
http://iwode09.ist.utl.pt/
Goals
The Workshop is aimed at advancing research and practice in ODE by bringing
together individuals or groups working on the same or related areas and
finding out how the various perspectives might be made to converge in terms
of research objectives, methodologies and results. An important aim is also
to promote collaborative research, including not only academics but also
practitioners.
Workshop format
The format of the workshop is aimed at maximizing interdisciplinary
exchange of ideas and experiences through the use of a small number of
presentations followed by small round–table discussions. In some of the
sessions, invited chairs will make presentations summarizing selected
papers and launching thematic discussions where authors and other
participants will take part.
Topics of interest
We welcome both theoretical and practical papers related to aspects such as
(but not limited to):
- Real–time organization – the impact of real–time information on
organizational design
- New organizational design principles and rules – the co–evolution of
design–by–decision and emergent design
- Social networking – networking applications as catalysts of emergent
design
- Visual management – the power of computer–based artefacts for making
emergent designs visible
- Knowledge management – the role of systems supporting emergent knowledge
processes
- The limits of organizational modelling – integrating design–by–decision
with emergent design modelling
- Ethical issues – the limits of organizational self–awareness arising from
the new modelling and technological capabilities
- Dynamic enterprise architectures – adaptation of business architectural
models in line with emergent designs
- Organizational change – learning and change through the misalignment of
planned and emergent design
- The impact of organizational qualities on the design of computer–based
artefacts
- Development process of organizational computer–based artefacts – the
continuous development cycle driven by emergent designs
- The organizational impact of organizational computer–based artefacts –
from planned to emerging impacts
- Organizational strategy – computer–based artefacts as drivers of strategy
instead of merely supporters of strategy
Submission Guidelines
Contributions should be submitted electronically preferably as PDF files,
but Word files are also acceptable. The Harvard referencing format should
be used. Ideally, papers should not exceed 15 pages in length (about 7500
words), one column, single spaced, in Times New Roman font, size 12. Main
title in Times New Roman font, size 14 bold. Paragraphs must be separated
by one line and pages must be numbered. Papers must have an Abstract of up
to 300 words.
