edBPM 09
2nd International Workshop on Event-Driven Business Process Management
7 September 2009, Ulm, Germany
http://icep-edbpm09.fzi.de
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+ Special issue in Journal of Software Process
+ Improvement and Practice for selected BPM 2009
+ workshop papers
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
-------------------------------
Information about the workshop
-------------------------------
The recently coined term «Event-Driven Business Process Management»
(EDBPM) is nowadays an enhancement of Business Process Management (BPM) by
new concepts of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), Event Driven
Architecture (EDA), Software as a Service (SaaS), Business Activity
Monitoring (BAM) and Complex Event Processing (CEP). In this context BPM
means a software platform which provides companies the ability to model,
manage, and optimize these processes for significant gain. As an
independent system, CEP is a parallel running platform that analyses and
processes events. The BPM- and the CEP-platform correspond via events
which are produced by the BPM-workflow engine and by the if distributed
- IT services which are associated with the business process steps. Also
events coming from different event sources in different forms can trigger
a business process or influence the execution of the process or a service,
which can result in another event. Even more, the correlation of these
events in a particular context can be treated as a complex, business level
event, relevant for the execution of other business processes or services.
A business process arbitrarily fine or coarse grained can be seen as a
service again and can be choreographed with other business processes or
services, even between different enterprises and organisations.
Loosely coupled event-driven architecture for BPM provides important
benefits:
- Responsiveness. Events can occur at any time from any source and
Processes respond to them immediately, whenever they happen and wherever
they happen.
- Agility. New processes can be modeled, implemented, deployed, and
optimized more quickly in response to changing business requirements.
- Flexibility. Processes can span heterogeneous platforms and programming
languages. Participating applications can be upgraded or changed without
breaking the process model.
Authors are invited to submit novel contributions in the above mentioned
problem domain. Specifically, the relevant topics include, but are not
limited to:
- Event-driven BPM: Concepts e.g. Role of event processing in BPM,
Business Events: types and representation, Event stream processing in
business processes, Data- and event-driven business processes
- Design-time CEP and BPM e.g. Modelling events in human-oriented tasks,
Semantics/Ontologies for event-driven BPM, BPMN and event processing.
- Run-time CEP and BPM e.g. Event pattern detection, BPEL and event
processing, Reasoning about unknown/similar events
- Applications/Use cases for event-driven BPM e.g. Event-driven
monitoring/BAM , Event-driven SLA monitoring
-------------------------------
Submission
-------------------------------
The following types of submission are solicited:
- Long paper submissions, describing substantial contributions of novel
ongoing work. Long papers should be at most 12 pages long.
- Short paper submissions, describing work in progress. These papers
should be at most 6 pages long.
Papers should be submitted in the new LNBIP format
(http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-7-487211-0). Papers
have to present original research contributions not concurrently submitted
elsewhere. The title page must contain a short abstract, a classification
of the topics covered, preferably using the list of topics above, and an
indication of the submission category (Long Paper/ Short Paper). Papers
can be uploaded via the workshop page on easychair, the address can be
found on the workshop homepage (http://icep-edbpm09.fzi.de).

2009 ACM Workshop on Secure Web Services (SWS)
http://sesar.dti.unimi.it/SWS09/
November 13, 2009
Hyatt Regency, Chicago, USA.
Held in conjunction with the
16th ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CCS 2009)
Call for Papers
Basic security protocols for Web Services, such as XML Security, the WS-*
series of
proposals, SAML, and XACML are the basic set of building blocks enabling
Web
Services and the nodes of GRID architectures to interoperate securely.
While these
building blocks are now firmly in place, a number of challenges are still
to be met
for Web services and GRID nodes to be fully secured and trusted, providing
for
secure communications between cross-platform and cross-language Web
services. Also,
the current trend toward representing Web services orchestration and
choreography
via advanced business process metadata is fostering a further evolution of
current
security models and languages, whose key issues include setting and
managing
security policies, inter-organizational (trusted partner) security issues
and the
implementation of high level business policies in a Web services
environment.
The SWS workshop explores these challenges, ranging from the advancement
and best
practices of building block technologies such as XML and Web services
security
protocols to higher level issues such as advanced metadata, general
security
policies, trust establishment, risk management, and service assurance.
The workshop provides a forum for presenting research results, practical
experiences, and innovative ideas in web services security.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Web services and GRID computing security
* Authentication and authorization
* Frameworks for managing, establishing and assessing inter-organizational
trust
relationships
* Web services exploitation of Trusted Computing
* Semantics-aware Web service security and Semantic Web Secure
orchestration of Web
services
* Privacy and digital identities support
Important Dates
* Paper submissions due: June 12th, 2009.
* Acceptance notifications: August 16th, 2009.

proceedings.
Submissions must be at most ten pages in double-column ACM format (note:
pages must
be numbered), excluding the bibliography and well-marked appendices and at
most 12
pages overall. Committee members are not required to read appendices, so
the paper
should be intelligible without them.
All submissions must be anonymized (an author's name should only occur in
references
to that author's related work, which should be referenced in the third
person and
not overtly distinguishable from the referenced work of others).
Submissions should
be made electronically in PDF or portable Postscript format using the

PAPER ONE
Enabling Organizational Learning to Contribute toward a Learning Organization: An Exploratory Case Study of Knowledge Management Practices in Taiwan's Electronics Industry
Pei-Di Shen, Ming Chuan University, Taiwan
Tsang-Hsiung Lee, National Chengchi University, Taiwan
Chia-Wen Tsai, Yuanpei University, Taiwan
Yi-Fen Chen, Chung Yuan Christian University, Taiwan
How can practices of knowledge management (KM) enable organizational learning to occur and then lead toward a learning organization? In this article, the authors seek the answer to this question by exploring three cases: Winbond, Worldpeace, and TSMC, chosen respectively from upstream, midstream, and downstream firms in the IC industry in Taiwan. The authors study KM practices focusing on aspects of knowledge creation, storage/retrieval, transfer, and application. In this study, the authors discuss the findings among IC designers.

PAPER TWO
Motif Analysis and the Periodic Structural Changes in an Organizational Email-Based Social Network
Krzysztof Juszczyszyn, Wrocław University of Technology, Poland
Katarzyna Musiał, Wrocław University of Technology, Poland
Network motifs are small subgraphs that reflect local network topology and are shown to be useful for creating profiles that reveal several properties of a network. In this paper, the motif analysis of the e-mail network of the Wroclaw University of Technology, consisting of over 4000 nodes was conducted. Temporal changes in the network structure during the period of twenty months were analyzed and the correlations between global structural parameters of the network and motif distribution were found. The authors use the results in the development of methods dedicated for fast estimating of the properties of complex Internet-based social networks.

PAPER THREE
C2C Business Models: Beyond Online Marketplaces
Bhavik Pathak, Indiana University South Bend, USA
Compared to the research on B2B and B2C models, research on C2C models has been less extensive and narrowly focused on the electronic marketplaces. This undermines the analysis of potential implications of C2C models in online retailing. In this paper, the author redefines C2C to extend its scope, study and categorize various C2C models that facilitate trading or sharing of products and information, and provide comprehensive analysis of the implications of these models for online retailing. This research provides a framework for various consumer-centric business models, such as virtual communities, electronic marketplaces, and peer-to-peer networking applications.

PAPER FIVE
Politeness as a Social Software Requirement
Brian Whitworth, Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand
If politeness makes society a nicer place to be, by lubricating the interaction of its human parts, then the same is important for online society. As the Internet becomes more social, software can mediate social interactions, serve as a social agent, or act as a personal assistant; but to succeed in these roles, it must learn a new skill - politeness. This article proposes politeness as the distinguishing mark of a new generation of community software based on the benefits of social synergy rather than technical efficiency. Conversely, selfish software is currently a widespread problem as politeness is a software design "blind spot". For the Internet to realize its social, as well as technical potential, software must be not only useful and usable but also polite.

PRESENTATION
Learners with various cultural profiles and backgrounds are benefiting
from diverse applications and initiatives of the AIED community. That
said, research in education has shown that teaching methodologies and
instructional design cannot always be universally applied as their impact
can greatly vary from one culture to another. In other words, pedagogical
strategies that are effective for one cultural group may not be effective
with a different one. As a result, researchers are increasingly focusing
on cultural factors in the conception of AIED systems, be it from the
point of view of learners’ varying cultural backgrounds or the influence
that these backgrounds have on the choice of underlying teaching
methodologies. Developing AIED systems with cultural discernment
capabilities can therefore -- among other possibilities -- contribute to
lessening the potential for misunderstanding learner behaviour as well as
allow for customized learning according to cultural needs. A greater
cultural focus can also increase the flexibility of the systems we build
and promote their acceptance and wider spread use.
Furthermore, in a world in which interactions between culturally diverse
people and groups are becoming usual, developing models of cultural
representation is a valuable undertaking. Not only is there an increasing
need in the teaching process for the ability to address individuals and
groups with respect to culture, there is a need to learn about culture
itself in view of its rich and multi-faceted variability. AIED systems,
enhanced with a capacity for simulating complex cultural situations, could
have a profound impact on the format, design and quality of teaching they
wish to impart.
A first edition of the proposed workshop took place in 2008 in conjunction
with ITS 2008. Proceedings can be accessed at:
http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/~blanchae/CATS2008/CATS2008.pdf
The current workshop consequently aims to continue this trend on the way
culture can be represented within the overarching goal of imparting
knowledge via AIED. It also aims to stimulate discussion on the impact of
culture on AIED systems and reflect on those emerging technologies that
need to be developed to more fully integrate cultural considerations.
Finally, it aims at sharing and expanding the very knowledge we have about
culture.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Papers concerned with issues of representing culture as well as its impact
and influence in the domain of AIED will be encouraged, whether from
computer science, psychology, intercultural studies or other related
fields. Research at varying levels of development as well as position
papers will be considered.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Computer modelling of individual cultural traits

- Relationship between culture and cognition and its impact within AIED
systems
- Cultural adaptation methodologies and their application in AIED systems
- Interface variations according to users’ cultural background

EDITORIAL PREFACE
IJISCRAM 1(2)
Bartel Van de Walle, Co-Editor in Chief
The remarkable thing, in this day and age, is that most of these people
remain invisible to each other. Admittedly, in the older days, that was
unavoidable. A most remarkable evolution on the Web in the last few years
is the rise and growth of social websites. While the initial
user/subscriber/member age demographics were well below the average age of
the more experienced emergency manager or researcher, this is not longer
the case today. At an ever increasing rate, new Web 2.0 applications are
being developed that introduce social networking into all aspects of
society including science.

PAPER ONE
When and How (Not) to Trust It? Supporting Virtual Emergency Teamwork
Monika Büscher, Lancaster University, Denmark
Preben Holst Mogensen, University of Aarhus, Denmark
Margit Kristensen, The Alexandra Institute Ltd., Denmark
In this article we use the formative evaluation of a prototype assembly
of pervasive computing technologies to specify design implications for
emergency virtual teamwork tools. The prototype assembly, called
Overview, is implemented in collaboration with police, fire and medical
emergency services as part of the real life event management during the
Tall Ships Races 2007 in Denmark. The authors describe how the emergency
teams use technologies for the collaboration between distributed
colleagues to produce shared situation awareness, to manage efforts and
resources and to respond to minor emergencies. The authors show how
practices of working up trust are supported by the PalCom open
architecture and delineate design guidelines to enable the productive
integration of pervasive computing.

PAPER TWO
Adaptive Ontology Use for Crisis Knowledge Representation
Aviv Segev, National Chengchi University, Taiwan
In a crisis the problem of the lack of a shared platform or similar
communication methods among the collaborators usually arise within a few
hours. While a crisis requires rapid response of emergency management
factors, ontology is generally represented in a static manner. Therefore,
an adaptive ontology for crisis knowledge representation is needed to
assist in coordinating relief efforts in different crisis situations. The
article describes a method of ontology modeling that modifies the ontology
in real time during a crisis according to the crisis surroundings. The
method is based on modeling a basic predefined multilingual. This article
presents an example of ontology usage based on a sample Katrina crisis.

PAPER THREE
Open Infrastructure for a Nationwide Emergency Services Network
Mark Gaynor, Boston University, USA
Scott Brander, Harvard University, USA
Alan Pearce, Information Age Economics, USA
Ken Post, Alert Systems Inc., USA
This article suggests and supports a public policy in which the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) should seize a unique opportunity to
resolve some of the nations critical communications problems in times of
crises with the allocation of a portion of the spectrum at 700 MHz for the
deployment of a nationwide interoperable emergency broadband wireless
network built by a public-private partnership. The authors present a
convincing theoretical model that advocates an open and/or neutral network
that advances public safety along with the deployment of new and valuable
technologies, applications, and services.

PAPER FOUR
Collaborative Command and Control Practice: Adaptation, Self-Regulation
and Supporting Behavior
Jiri Trnka, Linköpings Universitet, Sweden
Björn Johansson, Saab Security, Sweden
This article describes a study, which aims to document the work practice
of a team of commanders responding to an emergency and to identify areas
and activities that may be enhanced by the use of command and control
tools. This study was based on a human-in-the-loop simulation with
emergency management commanders as participants. The authors use several
communication analyses to assess coordination among the commanders. This
article examines the most important enabler of coordination.

EVENT REPORT
Golden Phoenix 2008
Andrew Westfall, San Diego State University, USA
Murray E. Jennex, San Diego State University, USA
Sondra Dickinson, San Diego State University Foundation, USA
Eric Frost, San Diego State University, USA
The International Journal of Information Systems for Crisis Response and
Management, IJISCRAM, has a goal of promoting quality research into
information systems, IS, for crisis response and management.
Unfortunately, this research doesnt lend itself well to the traditional
positivist quantitative research methodologies considered quality research
by main stream IS researchers. Instead, our methodologies focus on
qualitative and action research methods. This event report, on the Golden
Phoenix exercise, is action and experimental research. Action research as
all the authors were participants in the exercise. Experimental research
as the exercise itself was a live world laboratory for testing various IS,
sensor, and other technologies supporting crisis response.

IJMCMC 1(1)
Ismail Khalil, Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria
Edgar Weippl, Secure Business Austria - Security Research, Austria
The field of mobile computing and multimedia is expanding in an
unprecedented pace. Indicators are the rapidly increasing penetration
of the cellular phone market around the world, and the mobile
computing market is growing nearly twice as fast as the desktop
market. In addition, technological advancements have significantly
enhanced the usability of mobile communication and computer devices.
For these reasons and more, the editors believe that this is the right
time to introduce a specialized journal in the area of mobile
computing and multimedia communications. The editors hope readers
will gain greater insight into mobile multimedia as they relate to
applications, management, and opportunities within any given constructs.

PAPER ONE
Scenario-Based Cluster Formation and Management in Mobile Ad Hoc
Networks
V. S. Anitha, National Institute of Technology - Calicut, India
M. P. Sebastian, National Institute of Technology - Calicut, India
This article proposes a scenario-based algorithm for cluster formation
and management in mobile ad hoc networks. Depending on the application
a centralized or distributed algorithm based on (k, r) –dominating set
is used for the selection of clusterheads and gateway nodes. Here k is
the minimum number of clusterheads per node in the network and r is
the maximum number of hops between the node and the clusterhead. The
quality of the clusterhead is a function of various metrics, which
include connectivity, stability, and residual battery power.

PAPER TWO
Fast Vector Quantization Encoding Algorithms for Image Compression
Ahmed Swilem, Minia University, Egypt
Vector quantization (VQ) is a well-known compression method. In the
encoding phase, searching the closest codeword in the codebook is a
time-consuming task. In this article, two fast encoding algorithms for
VQ are proposed. To reduce the search area and accelerate the search
process, the first algorithm utilizes three significant features of a
vector that are the norm and two projection angles to two projection
axes. The second algorithm uses the first two features as in the first
algorithm with the projection value of the vector to the second
projection axe. The algorithms allow significant acceleration in the
encoding process. The author presents experimental on image block data.

PAPER THREE
FCVW: Experiments in Groupware
Ivan Tomek, Acadia University, Canada
Elhadi Shakshuki, Acadia University, Canada
Pervasiveness of the Internet and increasing geographical dispersal of
work teams result in continuously growing importance of groupware -
software that supports collaboration within groups. Numerous
applications have been developed to address collaboration needs and
many are widely used but don’t fully satisfy work team requirements
and the Internet potential. This paper surveys several groupware
products and describes FCVW (Federated Collaborative Virtual
Workspace), an experimental project designed to explore certain
groupware aspects that are not sufficiently addressed by existing
products.

PAPER FOUR
A Cross-Layer Model for Video Multicast Based TCP-Adaptive FEC over
Heterogeneous Networks
Ghaida A. AL-Suhail, University of Basrah, Iraq
Liansheng Tan, Central China Normal University, China
Rodney A. Kennedy, The Australian National University, Australia
In this article, the authors present a simple cross-layer model that
leads to the optimal throughput of multiple users for multicasting
MPEG-4 video over a heterogeneous network. For heterogeneous wired-to-
wireless network, at the last wireless hop there are bit errors
associated with the link-layer packets that are arising in the
wireless channel, in addition of overflow packet dropping over wired
links. The authors employ a heuristic TCP function to optimize the
cross-layer model of data link and physical (radio-link) layer. An
adaptive forward-error-correction (FEC) scheme is applied at the byte-
level, as well as at the packet-level. The corresponding optimal video
quality can be evaluated at each client end.

PAPER FIVE
A Model for Mobile Learning Service Quality in University Environment
Nabeel Farouq Al-Mushasha, Jerash Private University, Jordan
Shahizan Hassan, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Malaysia
It is generally known that accessibility and mobility are the main
barriers for effective implementation of electronic learning; however,
the advent of mobile technology could be a potential solution to
remove the barriers. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research that
addresses the issue of mobile learning service quality in a university
environment. This study aims to propose a service quality model for m-
learning in a university environment. A questionnaire survey was
conducted which measured ten dependent variables and three independent
variables. The dependent variables were meant to measure service
quality, information quality, and system quality. The dependent
variables were meant to measure the causal relationship between
overall learners’ perceived service quality, learner satisfaction, and
learner behavioral intention to use the service in future.

PAPER SIX
Evaluating E-Communities of Wireless Networks Worldwide
Theodoros I. Kavaliotis, University of Macedonia, Greece
Anastasios A. Economides, University of Macedonia, Greece
Many people communicate among themselves using wireless networks. They
have developed e-communities in order to discuss issues about their
network development, problems, opportunities, and wireless technology
advances among others. The purpose of this article is to present an
evaluation framework and analyze the current status of such electronic
communities of wireless networks (ECWNs) in four continents: Africa,
America, Europe and Oceania. The evaluation framework contains fifty
criteria categorized into four categories, and then fifty-seen ECWNs
were evaluated using the criteria.

PAPER FORMAT & SUBMISSION
All submissions and reviews will be handled electronically in PDF format. RecSys09 submissions should be prepared according to the standard ACM SIG proceedings format. For your convenience, we provide paper templates in Microsoft Word and LaTeX on the conference website.
There are two paper categories:
- LONG PAPER submissions should report on substantial contributions of lasting value. Each accepted long paper will be presented in a plenary session of the main conference program. The maximum length is 8 pages in the standard ACM SIG proceedings format.
- SHORT PAPER submissions typically discuss exciting new work that is not yet mature enough for a long paper. Each accepted short paper will be presented in a poster/demo session. The presentation may include a system demonstration. The maximum length is 4 pages in the standard ACM SIG proceedings format.
RecSys '09 will not use blind review, so please include authors' names and affiliations on your submission. See the conference website for further submission information including submission URL.
