OVERVIEW
--------
The RE Doctoral Symposium is an international forum for PhD students
working in all areas of Requirements Engineering.
The forum is intended to bring together PhD students and give them the
opportunity to present and discuss their research in a constructively
critical atmosphere, and to meet fellow researchers at a similar stage
of their career.
More precisely, the goals of the RE Doctoral Symposium are:
* to give PhD students a chance to showcase their research,
* to provide them with feedback from a panel of senior international
researchers,
* to facilitate interaction among the participants,
* to offer PhD students the opportunity to attend the RE conference.
The doctoral symposium will operate in a workshop-like format.
WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE
----------------------
The Doctoral Symposium welcomes PhD students who are somewhere in the
middle of their doctoral research, that is:
* students who have settled on a dissertation topic,
* and whose PhD dissertation will benefit from the feedback received.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
-----------------------
To apply as a student participant to the Doctoral Symposium, you should
prepare a submission package consisting of two parts (described below),
both of which must be submitted via e-mail to Didar Zowghi and Patrick
Heymans no later than May 11th, 2009, 23.59 Apia, Samoa time.
PART 1 -- RESEARCH ABSTRACT
Your research abstract must be formatted according to the IEEE CS
proceedings format (see http://www.computer.org/portal/site/cscps/ for
instructions and templates) and must be a maximum of four pages with
main text in 10 point font, including all text, references, appendices,
and figures. All submissions must be in English. Submissions must be in
PDF format.
The research abstract should cover:
* Research question - clearly formulate the technical problem to be solved.
* Motivation - justify the importance of the problem.
* State of the art - describe what existing work your research builds
upon (citing key publications), and also briefly describe any existing
solutions that have been developed or are currently being developed
(citing key publications) and why they do not solve the problem.
* Proposed solution - sketch the proposed technical solution.
* Contributions - point out your (existing and planned) contributions to
the solution of the problem, and state in what aspects the suggested
solution is different, new or better as compared to existing approaches
to the problem.
* Research methods - indicate the methods you are using or will use to
carry out your research.
* Progress - describe the progress made in solving the stated problem
and propose a plan to complete the research. The plan should include
your strategy for evaluating your work and presenting credible evidence
of your results to the research community.
The sections of the paper need not necessarily follow the above
structure, but should feature the required content and allow to identify
it easily. We understand that students at a relatively early stage of
their research might have some difficulty addressing all of the content
requirements, but should attempt to do so as best they can.
The research abstract should include the title of your work, your name,
affiliation, email address, postal address, personal website, and a one
paragraph short summary in the style of an abstract for a regular paper.
Submissions should contain no proprietary or confidential material and

Methodische Entwicklung von Modellierungswerkzeugen
Workshop auf der Konferenz Informatik 2009, Lübeck, 29.9.2009
http://www.wi-inf.uni-duisburg-essen.de/GI-WS-2009
Termin für Einreichungen: 26.4.2009
-----------------------------------
Thema:
Modeling Framework (GMF) angesprochen.
https://www.itm.uni-luebeck.de/conftool-gi09/. Weitere Informationen

Methodical Development of Modelling Tools
workshop at the conference Informatik 2009, Lübeck/Germany, 2009-9-29
http://www.wi-inf.uni-duisburg-essen.de/GI-WS-2009
Date for submission: 2009-4-26
------------------------------
Topic:
Domain specific modelling languages (DSML) allow to create semantically
rich and consistent models and provide the basis for specific analyses
and transformations of models. To efficiently apply DSMLs, software tool
support is required. In theory, such software tools can to a great
extent be generated automatically from formal language descriptions.
When applying tools to generate model editors, however, methodologic
challenges arise which must be overcome before using the created
modelling languages.
The workshop fosters the exchange between experts on creating running
modelling software tools. Tools, methods and architectural approaches
for developing modelling software tools will be discussed. To a great
extent this covers the Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) with its
extending components Graphical Editing Framework (GEF) and Graphical
Modeling Framework (GMF), which currently are widely used for modelling
tool development. However, the workshop also throws light on alternative
approaches and takes a critical perspective on the EMF/GEF/GMF components.
Submissions on scientific research projects using specifically developed
modelling tools are welcome, as well as contributions which focus on the
general architecture and the development process of modelling tools.
Besides, the workshop will provide the opportunity to present modelling
tools from practical projects.
Contributions are encouraged, but not limited, to cover questions of the
following kind:
- How can formal language descriptions, typically given as metamodels,
be utilized for partially automating the creation process of modelling
tools, and how can descriptions of the abstract and concrete syntax of
modelling languages efficiently be prepared for generative software
development?
- Which trade-offs can be identified between creating software from
generated source code on the one hand, and utilizing a runtime-framework
on the other hand? Are both approaches combined efficiently by currently
available solutions, where is potential for improvement?
- How can manual modifications of automatically generated source code be
methodically retraced and transparently documented?
- Which approaches exist to deal with versioning conflicts between
changed versions of a tool and already existing model instances / model
files?
- How does an open component architecture, as offered by, e.g., the
Eclipse platform, influence the design of tool architectures and the
choice among corresponding development methods?
- From which deficits do currently available frameworks suffer, and
which steps of improvement can be taken in order to overcome these
deficits especially for the task of developing semantically rich, domain
specific modelling languages?
Format of contributions:
Accepted workshop contributions will appear in the joint conference
proceedings as part of the series "Lecture Notes in Informatics (LNI)".
They are to be submitted as PDF files created with the LNI format
templates (http://www.gi-ev.de/service/publikationen/lni/), should not
exceed 15 pages and not contain page numbers. Submissions will be posted
via the conference management system at

“Organizational Engineering” Minitrack within the Organizational Systems
and Technology Track at
the 43rd Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS-43)
January 05-08, 2009, Kauai, Hawaii, USA
http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_43/minitracks/os-oen.htm
The Organizational Engineering Minitrack at HICSS-43
Dominated by the behavioral science approach for a long time, information
systems research increasingly acknowledges design science research as a
complementary approach. The systematic design of artifacts is not
restricted to information systems components. Being the conceptual
foundations for information systems requirements, artifacts on the
strategic and organizational levels have to be engineered as well.
Organizational engineering aims at researching concepts, methods and
technology in order to understand, model, develop and analyze all important
aspects of changing organizations.
As a whole, it focuses on understanding the relationships and dependencies
between strategy, organizational structuring, business processes,
information flows and the supporting software systems. It encompasses
several multi-disciplinary topics, including modeling business goals and
processes, formalizing enterprise ontologies, identifying services and
analyzing best practices and patterns.
The focus of this minitrack is on approaches that deal with relating both
business and technological aspects of an organization. The organizational
engineering minitrack provides an opportunity for researchers, academics or
practitioners interested in organizational modeling, methodologies and
tools to present their solutions, exchange their ideas and discuss open
issues and future directions.
Although this is the first edition of the Organizational Engineering
minitrack at HICSS, an Organizational Engineering track has been a part of

Call for Papers
ECOWS 2009: The 7th European Conference on Web Services
November 9-11, 2009, Eindhoven, The Netherlands
http://is.ieis.tue.nl/ecows09
The European Conference on Web Services (ECOWS) is the premier conference
for both researchers and practitioners to exchange the latest advances in
the state of the art and practices of Web Services. The main objectives of
this conference are to facilitate the exchange between researchers and
practitioners and to foster future collaborations in Europe and beyond.
The success encountered by the Web has shown that tightly coupled software
systems are only good for niche markets, whereas loosely coupled software
systems can be more flexible, more adaptive and often more appropriate in
practice. Loose coupling makes it easier for a given system to interact
with other systems, possibly legacy systems that share very little with it.
Web services are at the crossing of distributed computing and loosely
coupled systems. When applications adopt service-oriented architectures,
they can evolve during their lifespan more easily and better adapt to
changing or unpredictable environments. When properly implemented, services
can be discovered and invoked dynamically using non-proprietary mechanisms,
while each service can still be implemented in a black-box manner. This is
important from a business perspective since each service can be implemented
using any technology, independently of the others. What matters is that
everybody agrees on the integration technology, and there is a consensus
about this in today's middleware market: customers want to use Web
technologies. Despite these promises, however, service integrators,
developers, and providers need to create methods tools and techniques to
support cost-effective development and the use of dependable services and
service-oriented applications.
Topics of Interest:
The ECOWS 2009 Program Committee seeks high quality papers related to all
aspects of Web Services, which constitute the current main technology
available for implementing service-oriented architectures and computing.
Topics of interest to the Research Track include, but are not limited to,
the following:
* Life-Cycle of Web Services Implementations
* Dynamic Web Services
* Semantic Web Services
* Economics and Web Services
* Quality Requirements for Web Services
* Web Services for Grids
* Web Services in a Service-Oriented Environment
* Web Services and Mobility

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS
2nd International Workshop on the Interplay between Usability Evaluation
and Software Development (I-USED 2009), Uppsala, Sweden, August 24th, 2009.
http://www.dsic.upv.es/workshops/i-used09
In conjunction with the 12th IFIP TC13 Conference in Human-Computer
Interaction (INTERACT 2009) Upssala, Sweden, August 26-28, 2009.
MOTIVATION
Software development is highly challenging. Despite many significant
successes, several software development projects fail completely or
produce software with serious limitations, including (1) lack of
usefulness, i.e. the system does not adequately support the core tasks
of the user, (2) unsuitable designs of user interactions and
interfaces, (3) lack of productivity gains or even reduced
productivity despite heavy investments in information.
Broadly speaking, two approaches have been taken to address these
limitations. The first approach is to employ evaluation activities in
a software development project in order to determine and improve the
usability of the software, i.e. the effectiveness, efficiency and
satisfaction with which users achieve their goals. To help software
developersí work with usability within this approach, more than 20
years of research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has created and
compared techniques for evaluating usability. The second approach is
based on the significant advances in techniques and methodologies for
user interface design that have been achieved in the last decades. In
particular, researchers in user interface design have worked on
improving the usefulness of information technology by focusing on a
deeper understanding on how to extract and understand user needs.
Their results today constitute the areas of participatory design and
user-centered design.
In addition, the Software Engineering (SE) community has recognized
that usability does not only affect the design of user interfaces but
the software system development as a whole. In particular, efforts are
focused on explaining the implications of usability for requirements
gathering, software architecture design, and the selection of software
components.
However, the interplay between these two fields, and between the
activities they advocate to be undertaken in software development,
have been limited. Integrating usability evaluation at relevant points
in software development (and in particular to the user interface
design) with successful and to-the-point results has proved difficult.
In addition, research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Software
Engineering (SE) has been done mainly independently of each other with
no in substantial exchange of results and sparse efforts to combine
the techniques of the two approaches. Larry Constantine, a prominent
software development researcher, and his colleagues express it this
way: Integrating usability into the software development process is
not easy or obvious (Juristo et al. 2001, p. 21).
THEME AND GOALS
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and
practitioners from the HCI and SE fields to determine the
state-of-the-art in the interplay between usability evaluation and
software development and to generate ideas for new and improved
relations between these activities. The aim is to base the
determination of the current state on empirical studies. Presentations
of new ideas on how to improve the interplay between HCI & SE to the
design of usable software systems should also be based on empirical
studies. Within this focus, topics of discussion include, but are not
limited to:
- Which artifacts of software development are useful as the basis for
usability evaluations?
- How do the specific artifacts obtained during software development
influence the techniques that are relevant for the usability evaluation?
- In which forms are the results of usability evaluations supplied
back into software development (including the UI design)?
- What are the characteristics of usability evaluation results that
are needed in software development?
- Do existing usability evaluation methods deliver the results that
are needed in user interface design?
- How can usability evaluation be integrated more directly in user
interface design?
- How can usability evaluation methods be applied in emerging
techniques for user interface design?
- How can usability evaluation methods be integrated to novel
approaches for software development (e.g., model-driven development,
agile development).
PARTICIPANTS
Participants are accepted on the basis of their submitted papers. We
aim at 15 with a maximum of 20 participants. The intended audience is
primarily software engineering and human-computer interaction
researchers who are working with the theme. The workshop should also
be relevant for practitioners who have experiences with and ideas for
improving the interplay between HCI and SE.
RELEVANCE TO THE FIELD
The main contribution is the determination of state-of-the-art and the
identification of areas for improvement and further research. The HCI
field includes a rich variety of techniques for either usability
evaluation or user interface design. But there are very few
methodological guidelines for the interplay between these key
activities; and more important, there are few guidelines on how to
properly integrate these two activities in a software development
process.
