Guest Editors
M. Ali Babar, Lero, Ireland.
Patricia Lago, VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Arie van Deursen, Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands.
----------------------------------
Important dates
Deadline for submission: 30 July 2009
Date of notification to authors (first round): 15 October 2009
Proposed date of publication: Tentatively in Spring 2010
----------------------------------
Context and Theme
In recent years, the software architecture community (i.e., researchers
and practitioners) has developed many methods, techniques, and tools to
support software architecture design, documentation, and evaluation
activities. However, apart from a few exceptions, there has been little
effort to gather and use empirical evidence to support the claims of
efficacy or capabilities of different methods and techniques developed for
supporting the software architecture process. The aim of this special
issue is to provide an authoritative reference on systematically selecting
and rigorously applying suitable empirical methods for evaluating methods,
techniques, and tools developed for supporting the software architecture
process.
This issue is particularly interested in carefully designed and rigorously
conducted empirical studies to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of
different methods, techniques, tools (e.g., ADLs, design methods, analysis
tools) developed to support the software architecture process (i.e.,
design, description, and evaluation). The editors of this special issue
have made available some example papers and relevant guidelines published
in software engineering literature at
http://www.lmsa-community.org/wikis/index.php/ESE-SA . Although not
mandatory, we strongly encourage the authors interested in submitting
their work to carefully examine these papers and give full considerations
to the guidelines papers while preparing their manuscripts for this
special issue.
Articles on the following topics are of interest. In all cases
appropriateness of the empirical research design and reliability and
validity of the achieved results should be emphasized:
Empirical analysis of the benefits and limitations of different
architecture design methods
Empirical comparisons of different Architectural Description Languages
(ADLs) and architectural modeling tools
Empirical analyses of contemporary and emerging approaches to
architecting (e.g., aspect-oriented, model-driven, and service-oriented)
Empirical studies illustrating benefits and limitations of technologies
for architectural knowledge and rationale management
Empirical studies aimed at clarifying the misconceptions and false hopes
of applying architectural styles and patterns
Experience reports or empirical case studies, particularly those that
demonstrate the scope and limitations of architecture design, description,
and evaluation approaches.
o Papers describing the failures in using certain approaches will be of
as much interest as the papers of success stories.
Empirical studies describing the social, organizational, and economic
aspects of institutionalizing architectural practices
Survey papers that present either the state-of-the-art or the
state-of-the-practice to examine and compare past results in this area,
particularly survey papers focusing on limitations. Particular
interest will be paid to surveys using published results to assess the
strength of evidence provided and illustrate the limitations of the
studied approaches.
--------------------------------
Submission guidelines
All manuscripts should be compliant with the journal's submission
guidelines, which can be accessed by visiting journal's website
(http://www.springer.com/computer/programming/journal/10664 ) and must not
have been published previously or be currently under consideration for
publication in any other journals or conferences. Significant extensions

We would like to announce a survey on process model alignment:
http://bpt.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/pub/survey/
Participants might win a copy of the BPM novel "The Process" (http://www.bpmn-book.com).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear colleagues,
Process modeling in business and IT differs a lot, sure, we all know it. But how can we bridge the gap? How should a reasonable alignment look like? In order to approach these questions, a questionnaire has been set up in a joint effort between HPI, SAP Research, and HU Berlin.
It would be great if you could participate in our survey at http://bpt.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/pub/survey/. It will take not more than 20 minutes and you can leave your email address in order to receive a result report and participate in a raffle for three copies of "The Process" (http://www.bpmn-book.com), a BPM novel.
Your help is very much appreciated,
Best,
Matthias Weidlich

Special Issue on Quantitative Research Methodology
In the course of conducting their research in information systems,
researchers must oftentimes investigate, design, and develop sound methods
or approaches to best conduct their research. Sometimes viewed as a
sidetrack topic, or as a byproduct of the main research, such learning
is often excluded from the journal literature and restricted to less
accessible works. The aim of this special issue is to provide a forum for
disseminating recently developed and advanced techniques for conducting
quantitatively oriented information systems research.
The intent is to provide a broad scope that includes a diverse spectrum of
quantitative research methods, ranging from exemplars to clearly written
descriptions of how new, improved or advanced approaches to quantitative
research have been carried out (e.g., a case study of quantitative
research methodology). The issue is also open to idealized, general
prescriptions for such approaches in comparison to existing ones (e.g.,
tutorials) as well as to literature reviews, philosophical essays, and
analytical research papers.
Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Traditional quantitative IS methods versus new approaches,
 Strengths and limitations
 Merging and complimentary approaches
The applicability of various methods to the IS field

CALL FOR PAPERS
The 4th International Workshop on Vocabularies, Ontologies and Rules
for The Enterprise (VORTE 2009)
Co-located with the 13th IEEE International EDOC Conference
Auckland, New Zealand, August 31st, 2009
Selected papers will be published in the ISI-indexed JRPIT journal
(subject to the final approval)
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
The VORTE series of workshops is devoted to the topics of
vocabularies, ontologies and rules in the context of enterprise
systems. The complexity of enterprise systems; the increasing needs
for advanced collaboration between various systems within one
institution or among many collaborating parties; and the velocity of
organizational, policy, structural and market changes strongly call
for immediate mobilization of the research community to develop more
flexible and reliable technologies for the development of enterprise
systems. Trying to respond to this urgent research need, the VORTE
series of workshops has been established in order to bring together
researchers and practitioners that are looking into the topics of
ontologies and rules in enterprise system development from different
yet complementary perspectives. The major objective is to provide a
research forum for exchanging ideas and results covering the use of
ontologies and rules in various stages of the development lifecycle of
enterprise systems. Examples of topics covered by VORTE fundamental
research contributions include the ontological evaluation of
enterprise systems and their interoperability and the investigation of
the use of ontologies and rules in business process modelling. Applied
research contributions include enhancing business rule engines and
business process management systems by ontologies and formal semantics
for rules. From the enterprise system development perspective research
topics are focused on relations of process modelling and execution
languages with business ontologies and rules, and how business
ontologies and rules used in enterprise models are further propagated
into technologies (e.g., semantic web) and architectures (e.g.,
service-oriented architectures) that enable collaboration between
heterogeneous enterprise systems. The workshop also welcomes
experience reports and empirical studies that are reporting on the use
of ontologies and rules in the enterprise system development
lifecycle.
VORTE 2009 is the 4th workshop associated with the EDOC conference
series that intends to bring together researchers and practitioners in
areas such as philosophical ontology, enterprise modelling,
information systems, semantic web, model-driven engineering, business
rules, and business process management. The goal of the workshop is to
discuss the role that (foundational and domain)
ontologies/vocabularies and business rules play in the conceptual
design and implementation of next generation enterprise solutions.
SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION
We solicit two types of papers:
- short papers (4 pages) discussing controversial issues in the field
or describe interesting or thought-provoking ideas that are not yet
fully developed; and
- full papers (8-10 pages) describing more mature results than short papers.
All submissions MUST conform to the two-column format of IEEE Computer
Society conference proceedings
(http://www.computer.org/portal/pages/cscps/cps/cps_forms.html) and
include the author's name, affiliation, and contact details. Papers
must be submitted as PDF files using EasyChair at
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vorte2009.
All papers must not have been previously published or submitted elsewhere.
The papers accepted for the EDOC 2009 Workshops will be published
after the workshop with an ISBN in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. At
least one of the authors for each accepted paper must register for the
main conference (there will be no workshop-only registration at EDOC
2009) and present their papers at the workshop. The registration needs
to be done via the EDOC 2009 website

meeting point for the community. The workshops should provide the
opportunity to present and discuss ongoing work and new ideas in the
diverse fields of research related to Technology Enhanced Learning. Of
particular interest are workshop proposals with an interdisciplinary
standpoint, proposals focusing on a specific technology of general
interest, or bringing together a sub-community.
*General Information and Criteria *
---------------------------
* Co-located workshops cover topics falling in the general scope of
the EC-TEL conference (refer to http://www.ectel09.org/).
* They are clearly focused.
* There is potentially a significant community interested in the
workshop's topic.
* Workshop duration can be half a day or a full day.
* We advise having more than one organizer and no more than four,
preferably from different institutions, bringing different
perspectives to the workshop topic.
* Workshops are intended to be genuine interactive events and not
mini-conferences. We welcome workshops with creative structures
and organizations that attract various types of contributions and
ensure rich interactions.
* Therefore, the workshop proposals should include how this is going
to be fulfilled (i.e. methods for eliciting opinions and ideas to
be used, organization of presentations and discussions, how non
presenting participants are involved and so on).
* Please also provide information about the planned review process

* * * AIMS OF THE CONFERENCE * * *
The ICAIS'09 conference aims at bringing together international
researchers, developers and practitioners from different horizons to
discuss the latest advances in system learning and adaptation. ICAIS'09
will serve as a space to present the current state of the art but also
future research avenues of this thematic. Topics of the conference cover
three aspects: Algorithms & theories of adaptation and learning,
Adaptation issues in Hardware, Applications. ICAIS will feature
contributed papers as well as world-renowned guest speakers (see
webpage), interactive breakout sessions, and instructional workshops.
* * * SCOPE OF THE CONFERENCE * * *
Adaptation plays a central role in dynamically changing systems. It is
about the ability of the system to "responsively" self-adjust upon
change in the surrounding environment. Like in living creatures that
have evolved over millions of years developing ecological systems due to
their self-adaptation and fitness capacity to the dynamic environment,
systems undergo similar cycle to improve or at least do not weaken their
performance when internal or external changes take place. Internal or
endogenous change bears on the physical structure of the system (the
building blocks: hardware and/or software components) due mainly to
faults and knowledge inconsistency. It requires a certain number of
adaptivity features such as flexible deployment, self-testing,
self-healing and self-correction. Extraneous change touches on the
environment implication such operational mode or regime,
non-stationarity of input, new knowledge facts, interference, etc.
The two classes of change also shed light on the research avenues
towards smart systems. To meet the challenges of these systems, a
sustainable effort is necessary to develop intelligent hardware on one
level and concepts and algorithms on the other level. The former level
may concern various analog and digital adjustments but also
self-healing, self-testing, reconfiguration and many other aspects of
system development and maintenance. The latter level is concerned with
developing algorithms, concepts and techniques which can rely on
metaphors of nature and which are inspired from biological and cognitive
plausibility. This two-fold plausibility is the basis for many
computational models such as neural networks, evolutionary computation,
probabilistic reasoning and many other soft computing and machine
learning models.
Taking stock of both classes of changes, a system must self-adapt its
structure and self-adjust its parameters over time as changes occur. A
fundamental issue is the notion of "self" which refers to the capability
of the system to act and react on its own and which covers all stages of
the system's working and maintenance cycle starting from online
self-monitoring to self-growing and self-organizing.

*SCOPE:*
Social software is a new paradigm that is spreading quickly in society,
organizations and economics. It supports social interaction and social
production. Social interaction is the interaction of non-predetermined
individuals. Social production is the creation of artefacts, by
combining the input from independent contributors without predetermining
the way to do this. Users are supported in creating new contacts,
presenting themselves and collaborating with other users. As a result,
content, knowledge and software is not created by a hierarchy of
experts, but by combining a multitude of contributions of independent
authors/actors. Examples for such a social production are wikis, blogs,
social bookmarking and tagging, etc.
Social software follows a more egalitarian and meritocratic approach
compared to traditional approaches where the role of the software user
is determined by the enterprise senior management and its
representatives. Thus, trust and reputation play a crucial role in the
use of social software instead of authority granted by the top management.
The paradigm of social software and social production has created a
multitude of success stories such as wikipedia.org and the development
of the Linux operating system. Therefore, more and more enterprises see
social software and social production as a means for further improvement
of their business processes and business models. For example, they
integrate their customers into product development by using blogs to
capture ideas for new products and features. Thus, business processes
have to be adapted to new communication patterns between customers and
the enterprise: for example, the communication with the customer is
increasingly a bi-directional communication with the customer and among
the customers. Social software also offers new possibilities to enhance
business processes by improving the exchange of knowledge and
information, to speed up decisions, etc.
Up to now, the interaction of social software and the underlying
paradigm of social production with business processes have not been
investigated in depth. Therefore, the objective of the workshop is to
explore how social software and social production interact with business
process management, how business process management has to change to
comply with social production, and how business processes may profit
from social techniques.
*TOPICS OF INTEREST:*
*1. New opportunities provided by social software for BPM
* - How can business processes fit to business models based on the
paradigm of social production?
- Which new possibilities for the design of business processes are
created by social software?
- How are trust and reputation established in business processes using
social software?
- Are there business processes which require sociality, especially when
they are not well defined
(as production workflows) but collaborative or ad hoc?
- How does social production influence the design of business processes?
- What is the impact on conceptual models for those categories of
business processes which are not well-defined
or that we do not wish to freeze using classical business process
enactment systems for instance?
*2. Engineering next generation of business processes: BPM 2.0 ?
* - Do we need new BPM methods and/or paradigms to cope with social
software?
- Is there an influence of social production and social software on BPM
methods themselves?
- Are there any similarities or relationships with process mining
techniques and also with workflow control and role patterns?
- Which phases of the BPM lifecycle (Design, Deployment, Performance,
and Evaluation) are affected the most by social software?
- How can BPM profit from using social software?
- Which types of social software can be used in which phases of the BPM
lifecycle?
*3. Business process implementation support by social software
* - Which kinds of social software can be used to implement business
processes?
- Which categories of business processes can profit from social software?
- How does social software interact with WFMS or other business process
support systems?
- How can we use Wikis, Blogs etc. to support business processes?
- What new kinds of business knowledge representation are offered by
social production?
*SUBMISSION:
*Prospective authors are invited to submit papers for presentation in
any of the areas listed above. Only papers in English will be accepted.
Length of full papers must not exceed 12 pages (There is no possibility
to buy additional pages). Position papers and tool reports should be no
longer than 6 pages.
Papers should be submitted in the new LNBIP format
(_http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-7-487211-0_). Papers
have to present original research contributions not concurrently
submitted elsewhere. The title page must contain a short abstract, a
classification of the topics covered, preferably using the list of
topics above, and an indication of the submission category (regular
paper/position paper/tool report).
Papers (preferably in PDF format) should be emailed to
_Rainer.Schmidt(a)htw-aalen.de_.
The paper selection will be based upon the relevance of a paper to the
main topics, as well as upon its quality and potential to generate
relevant discussion. All the workshop papers will be published by
Springer as a post-proceeding volume (to be sent around 4 months after
the workshop) in their Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing
(LNBIP) series.
*EXPECTED RESULTS:
*All papers will be published on workshop wiki before the workshop, so
that everybody can learn about the problems that are important for other
participants.
A blog will be used to encourage and support discussions.
The workshop will consist of long and short paper presentations,
brainstorming sessions and discussions.
