Quality of Software Architectures (QoSA 2008)

Motivation
==========
Today, a systems's software architecture cannot be seen simply as a
means to an end, the end being the implemented system. Although the
ultimate measure of the quality of the software architecture lies in the
implemented system, in how well it satisfies the requirements and
constraints of the project and whether it can be maintained and evolved
successfully, the quality of a system's software architecture is one of
the critical factors in its overall system quality - encompassing both
functional and extrafunctional properties. In order to treat design as
an engineering discipline rather than an art, we need the ability to
address the quality of the software architecture directly, not simply as
it is reflected in the implemented system.
This years QoSA's main topic is on "Models and Architectures". Modelling
software architectures for documentation purposes as well as manual
analysis is an established practice. Due to the continuous maturation of
model-driven software development methods and tools, software
architecture models also become subject to automated model
transformations. Their target is either to generate high quality
software implementations or to automatically derive analysis models for
predicting architectural quality characteristics like performance or
reliability.

Call for Papers
Abstract submission deadline: September 28th 2008
Third Global Sourcing Workshop: The Impacts of Global IS Sourcing on
Engineering, Technology and Innovation Management
22-25 March 2009
Keystone, CO, USA
Following the success of the past Global Sourcing workshops in 2007 and
2008, we are pleased to release this Call for Papers for the third Global
Sourcing Workshop which will be held March 22-25, 2009 in Keystone, CO,
USA.
Global sourcing of IT and business services has become one of the most
critical economic transformations of our time. By 2009 revenues from the
offshore outsourcing of information technologies (IT) will exceed $US30
billion, and over the next five years the compound annual growth rate in
this industry is expected to be about 20 per cent (Willcocks and Lacity
2006). These phenomena well deserve in-depth study, and this workshop
provides a forum for advancement in research approaches and learning.
This workshop will focus on the topic of Global IS Sourcing with a
specific interest in social, managerial and knowledge-related aspects of
IS sourcing and how these aspects affect engineering, technology and
innovation management. This workshop aims to bring together viewpoints
from various disciplines, including IB, Strategy, OB and IS on global
sourcing of information systems.
We invite research articles and focus on practice papers that
investigate social, managerial and knowledge-related topics in global
outsourcing/offshoring relationships. In particular, the workshop will
endeavor to present both the view of managers from both client and
vendor perspectives. Some of the specific themes that are of interest in
this workshop are:
* Critical issues in engineering and innovation management tasked
with engaging a global supplier network and workforce
* Knowledge management systems, codification processes and their
impact on outsourcing performance
* Emerging concepts such as Open Sourcing and their consideration
from social, managerial and knowledge perspectives
* People retention issues and implications for success of global
IT sourcing arrangements
* Retained management capabilities from a social and knowledge
perspective
* Social capital in global sourcing arrangements
* (Multi-) cultural aspects in outsourcing/offshoring
relationships
* aspects relating to the management of captive centers
* Emerging sourcing markets such as China, South America, Africa
and Eastern Europe.
We are interested in including papers that are both conceptual and
empirically-based. In terms of empirical data, we seek papers that
report on outsourcing/offshoring arrangements from countries that have
so far been poorly represented in the existing literature such as Latin
American, Eastern Europe, Caribbean countries, China and others. In
terms of conceptual papers and theoretical frameworks, we seek to
contribute to theory building by both reapplying existing frameworks and
developing new constructs that help explaining social, managerial and
knowledge-related aspects in global sourcing.
After presenting their work at the third Workshop on Global Sourcing
the authors may choose to submit their papers to the special issue in
IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management on *The Impacts of Global
Information Systems Sourcing on Engineering, Technology and Innovation
Management* edited by Willcocks, Rottman, Kotlarsky and Oshri
(deadline for submission August 31st 2009). However, the workshop and
the special issue are not connected and participation in the workshop is
not required for consideration for the special issue.
Please note that a small conference venue has been reserved with
guaranteed attendance restricted to those having papers accepted for
presentation.
Important Dates:
September 28th 2008 - Deadline to submit extended abstracts to the
Workshop on Global Sourcing
September 29th 2008 - Notification of accepted extended abstracts
December 17th 2008 - Deadline to submit full papers to the Workshop on
Global Sourcing
March 1st 2009 - Deadline to submit revised manuscripts to the Workshop
on Global Sourcing Workshop
March 22-25th 2009 - Workshop on Global Sourcing, Keystone, CO, USA
Abstracts should be between 600-800 words.
All submissions should be sent in MS Word format to:
Alison.Solman(a)wbs.ac.uk with 'Global Sourcing Workshop 2009' as the
subject of the e-mail.
For guidelines on preparation of full papers please follow Guidelines
for Authors (http://www.globalsourcing.org.uk/page10.html).

Second Conference Workshop on Integrated Knowledge Management Systems (IKMS2009)
http://www.ebs.edu/index.php?id=ikms2009
CALL FOR PAPERS
BACKGROUND AND MOTIVATION OF THE WORKSHOP:
Information systems supporting knowledge management (KM), in brief knowledge management systems (KMS), are subject of research and practical application since more than a decade. Nevertheless, analyses show that user acceptance and usage of KMS vary significantly in different settings, ranging from high utilization to complete rejection. Empirical findings suggest that integration is a key success factor for the adaptation and efficient usage of KMS. Integration in this context has several dimensions: Firstly, it means to arrange and connect the different technical functionalities of a KMS or its components to deliver a consistent and integrated user experience. In addition to this, the KMS should be integrated soundly into the application landscape of the respective organization. Secondly, it means to embed a KMS into the business processes as seamlessly as possible so that users perceive it as a helpful, daily used tool (instead of a separate, isolated system). Thirdly, in!
a networked economy integration means to connect KMS across organizational boundaries. The ideally integrated KMS offers a rich set of well orchestrated functionalities, is imperceptible as a separate system because it is fully embedded into daily work processes and is seamlessly connected within value network surrounding its host organization. The workshop aims to provide a forum to discuss issues and exchange experiences about the successful implementation of KMS, where integration is one important line of thought which can be complemented by other important success factors.
TOPICS:
Topics of papers submitted can be, but are not limited to:
- Integration of content management, competence management, and collaboration management within KMS
- The integrating role of semantic technologies
- The role of personalization and search as integrating technologies
- Usage of new software technologies (e.g. SOA, WebServices) to integrate KMS
- Embedding of KMS into business processes
- The interplay of KMS applications and generic KM processes
- Modeling KMS as socio-technical systems (i.e. including individuals and organizations and related elements)
- Establishing knowledge-intensive corporate cultures as a prerequisite for successful KMS
- User-generated content and services in KMS
- User-driven semantic integration of KMS (collaborative semantic tagging)
- Integration of KMS with other information systems (e.g. ERP systems, business intelligence systems, portals)
ADDRESSED AUDIENCE:
The target group includes researchers and practitioners in the fields of knowledge management systems. Besides paper presentations, this workshop offers organized and open spaces for targeted discussions. It aims at offering a forum for the presentation and discussion of new directions and interesting work in progress.

Services Science has emerged as a new research discipline that receives growing attention both in academia and practice. It combines research from various disciplines which have evolved more or less separately. While theories from organizational and marketing science usually capture the nature of these products, engineering disciplines focus on shaping and developing these information goods, and the information systems field on integrating services which are perceived as encapsulated application functionalities with standardized (XML) interfaces. These research streams converge in the new interdisciplinary area of Services Science which integrates the principles, design, and management of economic and technical services.
The "First International Symposium on Services Science" will take place in Leipzig between March 23rd and 25th, 2009 as a part of the Multi-Conference SABRE - Software, Agents and Services for Business, Research and E-Sciences. The goals of the symposium are to present the current state of the art in research and industry regarding the Services Science, to establish a platform for the exchange of interested experts from various disciplines. The symposium welcomes both scientific contribution and best practices from practitioners. The program will be completed by keynotes. The organizing committee aims at balancing theory and practice. Leipzig University is located at the heart of Germany and will celebrate its 600 years anniversary in 2009.

The Reign Of Catz & Dogz at CHI 2009 (Boston, USA, April 2009)
Organizers: Thomas Chesney (University of Nottingham) and Shaun Lawson
(University of Lincoln)
Call For Papers
The Reign of Catz & Dogz at CHI 2009 is a one day workshop which intends
to explore aspects of interaction with ethologically inspired virtual
creatures including anthropomorphised embodied devices such as Aibo and
Pleo, and software such as Catz, Dogz and Nintendogs, as well as
non-commercial devices that have been developed in many research labs.
Despite the commercial success of these artefacts, the academic
understanding of human interactions with such systems remains limited.
We invite submission of position papers (three to four pages in length)
by researchers working on any relevant topic. These include:
-The role of virtual creatures in society -Studies of the benefits of
owning virtual pets -Cross cultural studies of aspects of virtual
creatures -Zoomorphic social robots -Ethical and cultural aspects of
virtual companions -Educational and developmental aspects of owning
virtual creatures -Comparisons of virtual with real pets and companion
animals -Innovative applications for virtual pets -Cute virtual
creatures and kawaii culture -Aesthetics of design of virtual creatures
-Hardware and software descriptions of research creatures -Kids and
virtual pets versus kids and teddy bears -Evaluations of commercial
creatures -Virtual pets as proxies, tool and applications for Web 2.0
Papers will be accepted based on the quality of research and potential
interest to attendees. We are particularly keen to receive submissions
from researchers outside of computer science and also from researchers
addressing intercultural aspects of interactions with virtual creatures.
The workshop will be held at CHI 2009 in Boston (USA)
(http://www.chi2009.org/) and will include presentations, discussion
panels, demonstrations and interactive activities. For further
information please see the workshop website
http://www.catz-and-dogz.org.uk/. Note that at least one author of each
accepted paper needs to register for the workshop and for one or more
days at the main CHI conference.
Papers (and any queries) should be emailed to Thomas Chesney
(thomas.chesney(a)nottingham.ac.uk) by midnight GMT on the 23rd October
2008 (please note the short deadline).
