IEEE Workshop on Workflow and Data Flow for Scientific Applications
in conjunction with ICDE 2006
April 8, 2006 - Atlanta, Georgia

Sponsored by Microsoft
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Computation has been described as the "third leg" of science, along
with theory and experimentation. Certainly, modern information systems
are vital to managing and processing the huge amounts of data produced
by simulations and experiments. However, existing tools are only now
beginning to catch up with the needs of today's scientists, and much
more needs to be done to support the computational needs of tomorrow's
scientists. In particular, scientists still need effective tools to
deal with massive data sets that may be geographically scattered, to
apply multiple complex and interacting transformations to the data,
and to ensure the quality and repeatability of their computations. The
IEEE Workshop on Workflow and Data Flow for Scientific Applications
brings together researchers who are exploring how to build the next
generation of information systems to address these needs.
The papers presented in this workshop demonstrate the ability of
computer scientists and natural scientists to work together to create
computer systems that support scientific exploration. The systems and
techniques described in these papers range from general toolkits that
make it easier for a wide range of scientists to produce and manage
workflows and dataflows, to specific case studies of scientific
applications which leverage workflow support in innovative ways. Our
hope is that by bringing researchers together to discuss these papers,
we can help generate further discussions and collaborations aimed at
applying workflow and data flow technology to meet scientists' needs.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Workshop on Bayesian Networks in Intelligent Tutoring (BANIT 2006)
The Eighth International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems
Jhongli, Taiwan, June 26-30, 2006
ITS 2006: http://www.its2006.org,
BANIT 2006: http://www.lcc.uma.es/BANIT06/
(due date: APRIL 3, 2006)
Personalization and adaptivity are invaluable features in modern
intelligent tutoring systems. However, it is not easy for software to
decide how to adapt its performance to meet individual student's needs,
partially because there are rare deterministic correspondences between
what we observe and what we need to know for making the best decisions
for intelligent tutoring. For instance, students can make inadvertent and
intentional mistakes while they are competent in the subject matter being
tested. It is also difficult to infer students' learning needs by
observing how they explore educational web sites. Building operational
models that can capture and reason about the uncertainty is thus important
for intelligent tutoring that aims at meeting individual student's needs.
Bayesian networks offer a great formalism for modeling under uncertainty,
and have been adopted in many applications including intelligent tutoring
in the past decade or so. This satellite workshop of the Eighth
International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems aims at providing
a forum for interested researchers and practitioners to discuss and share
methodologies and applications of Bayesian networks in all aspects of
intelligent tutoring.
Interested topics thus include, but are not limited to, how we can learn
Bayesian networks of interest either from experts, data, or both; how we
apply Bayesian networks to modeling major participants, including students
and teachers, in the learning processing; how the models can help us
choose pedagogical activities, including student assessment and course
material presentation; and practical issues such as reusability,
maintenance, and scalability of the resulting tutoring assistance systems.
======

format before June 7, 2006. The paper length should not exceed 6 pages
(single linespace, Times New Roman (or similar) font type, 12 pt font size,
reasonable margins).
In contrast to regular conference papers, submissions should address
specifically doctoral work! Therefore, the following elements are
recommended:
- A clear formulation of the research question.
- An identification of the significant problems in the field of research.
- An outline of the current knowledge of the problem domain, as well as
the state of existing solutions.
- A presentation of any preliminary ideas, the proposed approach and the
results achieved so far.
- A sketch of the applied research methodology.
- A description of the Ph.D. project's contribution to the problem
solution.
- A discussion of how the suggested solution is different, new, or better
as compared to existing approaches to the problem.
The intention of this doctoral consortium is to support and inspire
Ph.D. students during their ongoing research efforts. Therefore, it is
necessary that authors will have neither achieved their Ph.D. degree nor
officially submitted their thesis before the doctoral consortium (October
2, 2006). To enforce this rule we require authors to disclose their
expected graduation date and their advisor's name when submitting.
Papers will be reviewed by at leas two members of the doctoral consortium
committee. Accepted papers will be published in the workshop
proceedings. Papers will also be made available electronically to the
participants before the symposium to facilitate preparation of discussions
and questions. Presentations will be kept short (10-15 minutes). A
discussant, a member of the doctoral consortium committee, will be
appointed to each paper. Discussant comments will be followed by a plenary
discussion of the paper. At the end of the consortium there will be a
general discussion, including a brainstorming session about current and
future research topics in the area.
Only electronic submissions are accepted. E-mail your paper as an
attachment in PDF or Postscript format to
dc-ectel06(a)i5.informatik.rwth-aachen.de.

Pervasive or ubiquitous computing systems consist of large numbers of
'invisible' computers embedded into the environment which may
interact with mobile users or form intelligent networks for sensing
environmental conditions. Users will experience this world through a
wide variety of devices, some they will wear (e.g medical monitoring
systems), some they will carry (e.g. personal communicators that
integrate mobile phones and PDAs), and some that are implanted in the
vehicles they use (e.g car information systems). This heterogeneous
collection of devices will interact with intelligent sensors and
actuators embedded in our homes, offices, transportation systems to
form an intelligent pervasive environment which aids normal
activities related to work, education, entertainment or healthcare.
This talk will discuss some of the research issues related to
security, management and theory identified as a 'Grand Challenge'.
Prolearn virtual participants are invited to join the Prolearn
Hexagon and share this experience with other virtual Professional
Learning researchers. (http://hexagon.open.ac.uk/prolearn/).

Purpose / History:
This set of joint conferences is the largest annual gathering of
researchers in computer science, computer engineering and
applied computing. There will be a number of workshops, tutorials,
and discussion sessions. The motivation is to assemble a spectrum
of affiliated research conferences into a coordinated research
meeting held in a common place at a common time. The main goal is
to provide a forum for exchange of ideas in a number of research
areas that interact. The model used to form these annual
conferences facilitates communication among researchers in different
fields of computer science, computer engineering and applied
computing. Both inward research (core areas of computer science
and engineering) and outward research (multi-disciplinary,
inter-disciplinary, and applications) will be covered during the
conferences.
Submission of Papers:
Prospective authors are invited to submit their draft paper (about
5 to 8 pages - single space, font size of 10 to 12) to
H. R. Arabnia by March 7, 2006. email submissions in MS document
or PDF formats are preferable (Fax or postal submissions are also
fine.) All reasonable typesetting formats are acceptable (later,
the authors of accepted papers will be asked to follow a
particular typesetting format to prepare their papers for
publication.)
The length of the Camera-Ready papers (if accepted) will be limited
to 7 (IEEE style) pages. Papers must not have been previously
published or currently submitted for publication elsewhere. The
first page of the draft paper should include: title of the paper,
name, affiliation, postal address, email address, telephone number,
and Fax number for each author. The first page should also include
the name of the author who will be presenting the paper (if accepted)
and a maximum of 5 keywords. Also, the name of the conference that
the paper is being submitted to must be mentioned on the first page.
Papers will be evaluated for originality, significance, clarity, and
soundness. Each paper will be refereed by two researchers in field.
Location of Conferences:
The conferences will be held in the Monte Carlo Resort hotel,
Las Vegas, Nevada, USA (with any overflows at other near-by hotels).
The Monte Carlo Resort is a mega hotel with excellent conference
facilities and over 3,000 rooms. The hotel is minutes from the
airport with 24-hour shuttle service to and from the airport.
This hotel has many recreational attractions, including: waterfalls,
