Special Issue on Context-Aware Web Services
Distributed and Parallel Databases Journal
SCOPE
-----
Web services are nowadays emerging as a major technology for deploying
automated interactions between distributed and heterogeneous applications.
Various standards support this deployment including WSDL, UDDI, and SOAP.
These standards respectively support the definition of Web services,
their advertisement to the community of potential users, and finally
their binding for invocation purposes. In general, composing Web services
rather than accessing a single Web service is essential and provides
better benefits to users. Composition primarily addresses the situation
of a user's request that cannot be satisfied by any available Web service,
whereas a composite service obtained by combining available services may
be used. Several questions arise during Web services composition and
execution including which businesses have the capacity to provision Web
services, when and where the provisioning of Web services occurs, and how
Web services from independent parties coordinate their activities during
execution so conflicts are avoided. To address some of these questions,
it is recommended using the context in which the composition and execution
of Web services occur. Context is generally perceived as the information
that characterizes the interaction between humans, applications, and the
surrounding environment. From a Web services perspective, it is expected
that context should define a set of common data about the current status
of a Web service and its capability of collaborating with peers, possibly
enacted by distinct providers. For example before a Web service agrees to
participate in a composite service its status in term of current
participation is assessed. Moreover, before a back-up strategy is deployed
an assessment of the exception that a Web service has arisen is needed.
By organizing this special issue, we aim at presenting recent and
significant developments in the general area of context-aware Web services.
We seek original and high quality submissions related (but not limited to)
to one or more of the following topics:
- Ontologies and context for Web services.
- Context-based semantic matching for Web services composition.
- Context-based Web services deployment.
- Software agent-based approaches for context-based Web services interaction.
- Context-aware Web services in a mobile configuration.
- Context and security for Web services
- Security of context during Web services interactions.
- Software agents and context for Web services personalization
- Composition of context-aware Web services.
- Description, organization, and discovery of context-aware Web services.
- Context-aware Web services and semantic issues.
- Technologies and infrastructures for context-aware Web services.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Workshop on Bayesian Networks in Intelligent Tutoring (BANIT 2006)
The Eighth International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems
Jhongli, Taiwan, June 26-30, 2006
ITS 2006: http://www.its2006.org,
BANIT 2006: http://www.lcc.uma.es/BANIT06/
(due date: APRIL 3, 2006)
Personalization and adaptivity are invaluable features in modern
intelligent tutoring systems. However, it is not easy for software to
decide how to adapt its performance to meet individual student's needs,
partially because there are rare deterministic correspondences between
what we observe and what we need to know for making the best decisions
for intelligent tutoring. For instance, students can make inadvertent and
intentional mistakes while they are competent in the subject matter being
tested. It is also difficult to infer students' learning needs by
observing how they explore educational web sites. Building operational
models that can capture and reason about the uncertainty is thus important
for intelligent tutoring that aims at meeting individual student's needs.
Bayesian networks offer a great formalism for modeling under uncertainty,
and have been adopted in many applications including intelligent tutoring
in the past decade or so. This satellite workshop of the Eighth
International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems aims at providing
a forum for interested researchers and practitioners to discuss and share
methodologies and applications of Bayesian networks in all aspects of
intelligent tutoring.
Interested topics thus include, but are not limited to, how we can learn
Bayesian networks of interest either from experts, data, or both; how we
apply Bayesian networks to modeling major participants, including students
and teachers, in the learning processing; how the models can help us
choose
pedagogical activities, including student assessment and course material
presentation; and practical issues such as reusability, maintenance, and
scalability of the resulting tutoring assistance systems.
======
Topics
======
The main purpose of this workshop is to attract researchers who are
interested in methodologies and applications of Bayesian networks and
influence diagrams (also known as decision networks) for intelligent
tutoring. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following subject
matters.
* Building networks: using expert's opinion, learning from data,
theoretical models, etc.
* User modeling: diagnosis of knowledge/skills, multi-layered models,
affective computing, emotional monitoring, etc.
* Task selection algorithms: curriculum sequencing, testing knowledge,
problem selection, etc.
* Displaying results to users: inspectable models, open models, etc.
* Reusability, maintenance and upgrade of systems
* Practical barriers to adoption
======
Format
======
The workshop will consist of paper presentation, poster session, and
discussions.

Those who wish to attend are welcomed to submit papers in one of the
following three forms. All accepted papers will be included in the
workshop proceedings.
* a long paper of up to eight pages

The 3rd IFIP International Conference on
Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing (UIC-06)
- Building Smart Worlds on Real and Cyber Spaces -
http://www.uic-conference.org/2006/http://grid.hust.edu.cn/uic06/
Organized by Huazhong Univ. of Sci. and Tech. (HUST)
Co-Sponsored by HUST, NSFC, 863, ChinaGrid, IFIP
In Cooperation with the IEEE Computer Society (Applying)
Wuhan and Three Gorges, China, September 3-6, 2006
******************************************************
Following ubiquitous computers, networks, information,
services, etc., is a road towards a smart world (SW)
created on both real and cyber spaces. A SW is mainly
characterized by ubiquitous intelligence (UI) or
computational intelligence pervasive in the physical world,
filled with ubiquitous intelligent or smart things,
that are capable of computing, communicating, and behaving
smartly with some intelligence. One of the profound implications
of such ubiquitous smart things is that various kinds and
levels of intelligence will exist ubiquitously in
everyday objects, environments, systems and even ourselves,
and possibly be extended from man-made to natural things.
"Ubicomp" or "percomp" can be regarded as the computing of
all these intelligent/smart things/u-things, that are
essential elements and components of the SW.
A smart thing can be endowed with different levels of
intelligence, and may be context-aware, active, interactive,
reactive, proactive, assistive, adaptive, automated, sentient,
perceptual, cognitive, autonomic and/or thinking.
Intelligent/smart things is an emerging research field
covering many disciplines. A series of grand challenges exist
to move from the ubiquitous world with universal services of
any means/place/time to the SW of trustworthy services with the
right means/place/time. UIC-06 is a successor of the 2nd Int'l
Symposium on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Smart Worlds (UISW2005,
Japan, Dec. 2005) which succeeds the 1st Int'l Workshop on
Ubiquitous Smart Worlds (USW2005,Taipei, Mar. 2005). It offers
a forum for researchers to exchange ideas and experiences in
developing intelligent/smart objects, environments, and systems
as well as discuss various personal/social/physical issues
faced by UI and SWs.
Topics include but are not limited to the following:
1. Ubiquitous Intelligent/Smart Objects
