The Semantic Web offers a research perspective for automating business processes. Rule markup languages, that allow to express business rules as modular, stand-alone units in a declarative way, and to publish them and exchange them between different systems and tools, will play an important role for facilitating business-to-customer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) interactions over the Web. Derivation rules can be included in an ontology to define derived concepts on top of base concepts. In this way, for instance, derived business terms, such as customer categories, may be defined. Whenever a rule refers to an incomplete predicate, for which explicit negative information has to be represented along with ordinary (positive) information, a second negation, supplementing negation-as-failure, is needed (as in the formalism of extended logic programs). Using this negation in the head of a rule, one can express conflicting rules that may defeat each other. Such a language for defeasible rules is useful to represent business rules allowing for exceptions. In addition to derivation rules, there is another type of rule which allows to specify the reactive and communicative behavior of a system or agent: reaction rules -- in other contexts also called event-condition-action (ECA) rules or triggers. Business rules that specify the various steps of a business process can be encoded in the form of reaction rules. A general markup language for business rules has to accommodate these different types of rules and support their interoperation. Topics of Interest: We encourages submissions on all topics related to rule markup languages. In particular, we solicit papers on: - reaction rules in the Semantic Web - event/action languages - execution models - defeasible rules in the Semantic Web - defeasible concept definitions in ontologies - resolving conflicts in triggered action sets Other suggested topics include: - tools and systems for rules on the Semantic Web - combining rules and ontologies - integrating rules and description logics - multiple language rules (Prolog, SQL, OCL, XML, RDF, etc.) - future application scenarios based on RDF, ontologies and rules - RuleML-based applications - deployment of rule-based applications on the Web - rule-based software agents and the Semantic Web - connecting rules to legacy knowledge bases - integrating rule bases and distributed fact bases - handling lineage and reliability of distributed information - processing negative information with negation(s) - using URIs in rules - XSL transformations of rules - <yourTopic ... \> Submission: We invite articles of no more than 15 pages length describing original completed work, work in progress, or interesting problems or use cases. Submitted papers will be fully refereed based on the originality and significance of the ideas presented as well as on technical aspects. Concepts and techniques from the agents paradigm could well be the foundations for the next generation of mainstream information systems. Information systems have become the backbone of all kinds of organizations today. In almost every sector - manufacturing, education, health care, government, and businesses large and small - information systems are relied upon for everyday work, communication, information gathering, and decision-making. Yet the inflexibilities in current technologies and methods have also resulted in poor performance, incompatibilities, and obstacles to change. As many organizations are reinventing themselves to meet the challenges of global competition and e-commerce, there is increasing pressure to develop and deploy new technologies that are flexible, robust, and responsive to rapid and unexpected change. Agent concepts hold great promise for responding to the new realities of information systems. They offer higher level abstractions and mechanisms which address issues such as knowledge representation and reasoning, communication, coordination, cooperation among heterogeneous and autonomous parties, perception, commitments, goals, beliefs, intentions, etc. On the one hand, the concrete implementation of these concepts can lead to advanced functionalities, e.g., in inference-based query answering, transaction control, adaptive workflows, brokering and integration of disparate information sources, and automated communication processes. On the other, their rich representational capabilities allow more faithful and flexible treatments of complex organizational processes, leading to more effective requirements analysis, and architectural/detailed design. The workshop will focus on how agent concepts and techniques will contribute to meeting information systems needs today and tomorrow. The workshop encourages submissions on all topics related to AOIS, including (but not limited to) the following: - agent-oriented modeling and design methods - models and architectures for agent-oriented information systems - novel information system technologies based on software agents - agent-oriented requirements engineering - agents and knowledge management - agent-oriented approaches to data integration - agent-based workflow modeling - agent orientation and e-services/web services - agent orientation in web information systems - agent-oriented enterprise and business process modeling - agent communication languages for business communication - ontologies and agents - managing trust and reputation - automated business-to-business interaction (including negotiation and contracting) - agent technology in massive information analysis and summary Special Track: Agent-Oriented Methodologies -- Commonalities and Distinctions -------------------------------------------------------------- The growth of interest in software agents and multi-agent systems has recently led to the development of new methodologies based on agent concepts. Methodologies (such as, Gaia, AAII, MaSE, AUML, Message/UML, and Tropos, among others) have become the focal point of attention in the emerging area of agent-oriented software engineering. These methodologies propose different approaches in using agent concepts and techniques at various stages during the software development lifecycle. To promote deeper understanding among and to foster synergy across research efforts in the various methodologies, this special track solicits research contributions that will identify, analyze, and illustrate the commonalities and distinctions across different methodologies. Methodologies may differ in their objectives and underlying premises, the way they deal with issues such as openness, uncertainty, security, and autonomy, the extent of coverage over the different phases of software engineering, the way they stress the evolution, maintenance, and other non-functional qualities, and eventually with respect to the tools and technologies that can support them. Methodologies may also differ in generality, some focusing on specialized application domains, or specific implementation technologies. A clarification of the similarities and differences among methodologies is needed to guide the practitioner in choosing which methodology to adopt for what applications and circumstances. A clearer understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of various methodologies, their compatibilities and divergences, will also be crucial for further advancements in the development of methodologies. Submissions to this special track are encouraged to present their methodology using a case study from an information system application area. The case study is intended to be representative of the kinds of challenges faced by real-world information systems today and tomorrow, but also to be useful to show weaknesses and strengths of the presented methodology. After the workshop we would like to define a "challenge problem" taking contributions from all the participants and use it as a "benchmark example" for comparison in the future workshops. Submissions papers must have agent orientation as a central feature. They could include (but are not limited to) papers that: - contain a detailed exposition of one methodology using a case study and explaining what stages the methodology covers, possibly with direct comparisons to at least one other methodology; - focus on selected technical issues (e.g., evolution and maintenance, coordination and protocols, validation and verification), analyzing how one or more methodologies deal with those issues, using a case study as much as possible to illustrate; - analyze and illustrate how selected agent concepts (e.g., roles, responsibilities, capabilities, intentionality, autonomy, dependency networks and trust) are used in different methodologies, and the consequences of those different approaches; - describe the decisions and commitments supported by one methodology in the development process, possibly showing what kinds of analyses are used to support these decisions; - compare a methodology to other agent-based methodologies as well as other non-agent-based methodologies (for instance, object-oriented, component-based, etc.); - present from practical experience the methodological difficulties and challenges a methodology may face, possibly proposing requirements and evolution criteria for evaluating methodologies from practical prospective. Workshop Format --------------- To foster greater communication and interaction between the Information Systems and Agents communities, we are organizing the workshop as a bi-conference event. It is intended to be a single "logical" event with two "physical" venues. It is hoped that this arrangement will encourage greater participation from, and more exchange between, both communities. The first part of the bi-conference event will be held at the Fourteenth International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering - CAiSE 2002 (http://www.cs.toronto.edu/caise2002/). The technical program will include an invited talk, contributed papers, and poster sessions. Authors of accepted papers who present their paper at one location will also be invited to present their papers as a poster in the other location. Its goal is to provide a forum for researchers to present and discuss their current work. In order to stimulate a lively discussion the number of participants will be limited to approx. 30 people. The participants are encouraged to join an active discussion. We see the unique character of RSEEM in a small community comprised of a core of mature researchers (professors) plus a number of junior researchers (PhD. students). The conference is divided into two parts: First day: Presentations and discussion of the special conference topic "E-Procurement" Second day: The future of research in E-Markets and E-Societies (future projects, visions, ideas, prospects) We call for papers for both days. Compared with recent years we would like to further extend time for discussion. The first day is meant to follow the "traditional conference approach" where ongoing PhD. theses and projects are presented by junior researchers and input is given by the mature participants. On the second day we would like to have short presentations of visions of the future followed by a free discussion among the participants. Such discussions could result into ideas of future (joint) projects. This would stress the aspect of EMERGING markets as suggested by the conference title. This year the focus will be on "matching needs" - the topic of bringing together vendors and buyers or, more specifically, E-Procurement. E-Procurement systems support the internal processes for the purchase of products and services. The transfer of electronic product catalogs from the sell-side to the buy-side is one of today's main challenges in electronic commerce. A specific challenge is bridging the gap between companies using common formats and protocols. Guest editors are Ken Surendran, Department of Computer Science, Southeast Missouri State University and Ki-Yoon Kim, Department of Business Administration, Kwangwoon University, Korea. Information Security is receiving considerable attention with the rise in the threat for cyber attacks. In the past, security was, by and large, treated as an add-on rather than a basic design requirement. The trend is changing and many organizations employ Information Security Managers (ISM) to ensure all aspects of security in all stages of information handling. Recognizing Information Security Management as an occupation has resulted in training institutions offering specialized courses in this area. In response to meeting the demand for qualified ISMs, academic institutions have started offering courses and curricula in Information Security Management. The issue will present an international perspective on the status of Information Security Education. We solicit original papers on Information Security Management Education appropriate to JISEs readership. Emphasis is placed on development and implementation of ISM curricula as well as integration of security in existing Information System curricula. There is increasing agreement among IT researchers and practitioners about the importance and potential of distributed object systems and the advances in this area made in recent years. DOC systems offer practical, real-life production solutions to technical problems, including interoperability across different hardware, software and database platforms. There are several widely used and emerging distributed object computing paradigms, including CORBA, COM, SOAP, .NET, and Java Beans. The future success of DOC systems will not only be dependent on how the basic requirements (to develop open, reliable and scalable distributed and heterogeneous applications and platforms) are met but also how the underlying distributed object technology can be integrated with existing complementary technologies and applications, such as WWW, multimedia and databases. The reengineering of legacy systems may substantially benefit from the use of DOC, e.g., when turning them into data warehouses. Further standardization of distributed object concepts will very likely unlock many new areas of application still. TWO DIMENSIONS: Research & Practice As research in DOC establishes new principles, enhancing our understanding of the fundamental issues involved, and opening the way to new tools and methodologies for DOC, so conversely practical experience in real-life DOC projects drives the avenues of this same research by exposing new ideas and posing new types of problems to be solved. With the DOA Symposium we explicitly intend to provide a forum to help this mutual interaction occur, and to trigger and foster it. Submissions can be entered along both these dimensions: research (theory, fundamentals, principles of DOC) and practice (applications, experience, pragmatics of DOC). Contributions attempting to cross over the gap between these two dimensions will, of course, be especially welcome. As we are fully aware of the differences in environment for research and development that exist in academia and industry, submissions from each will be treated accordingly and judged by a peer review not only for scientific rigor (in the case of "academic research" papers) but for originality and generality of application (in the case of "case studies" papers). Papers of each type will be presented in parallel tracks at the Symposium, but with maximal opportunity for interaction for researchers and developers working on related topics. To summarize, during the DOA'2002 Symposium we therefore want attendees to be able to evaluate existing ORB middleware products; to analyze, and propose solutions to major limitations of existing products; and to indicate promising future research directions for distributed objects. We are particularly interested in the evaluation of existing DOC systems and how they are used to design and to implement large scale industrial distributed applications. We are seeking theoretical as well as practical papers addressing innovative issues related to distributed objects. DOA'2002 Symposium is a joint event with two other conferences organized within the global theme "On the Move to Meaningful Internet Systems and Ubiquitous Computing 2002". This federated event co-locates three related and complementary successful conferences in the areas of Intelligent Networked Information Systems, covering key issues in Data and Web Semantics (ODBASE'02), Distributed Objects, Infrastructure and Enabling Technology and Internet Computing (DOA'02), and Workflow, Cooperation, and Interoperability (CoopIS'02), as required for the deployment of Internet- and Intranet-based systems in organizations and for e-business. Submissions should be clearly labeled "Research", "Practice" or "PC discretion". All papers will be refereed by at least three members of the program committee, and at least two will be experts from industry in the case of practice reports. All submissions must be in English. Research submissions must not exceed 8,000 words. Practice reports must not exceed 5,000 words.
