describe those systems and technologies that make conducting business
on the Internet possible. The purpose of this workshop is to identify
and explore the technical and related technology management issues and
solutions for e-commerce on the Internet. The WECWIS workshop is to be a
forum for free exchange of ideas.
The year's program features a variety of papers, focusing on topics
ranging from Web services, to Internet infrastructures, auctions, and
pricing. In addition, there will be a tutorial on webservices research,
development directions and applications. Keynote speakers will be:

Located at one of the most important crossroads of the world,
Singapore is truly a place where East and West come together. Here you
will find Chinese, Indian, and Malay communities living together,
their long established cultures forming a unique backdrop to a clean

discussions. Visit the OCC website at http://www.orchidclub.com
Night Safari and Sentosa Resort Island
--------------------------------------
It is said that a visit to Singapore is not complete without making
a trip to two of the Republic's famous attractions. The only one of
its kind in the world, the Night Safari provides a setting for
visitors to experience what it is like to observe animals in their
nocturnal habitat. The island of Sentosa offers some unique
attractions and a visit there will also provide a glimpse and
imagery of Singapore's past and present. Visits to these two
attractions will be included as recreation for the joint conference.

>Presentation:
>
>The web today enables people to access documents and services on the
>internet. Today's methods require human intelligence. The interface
>to services is represented in web pages written in natural language
>much must be understood and acted upon by a human. The semantic web
>augments the current web with formalised knowledge and data that can
>be processed by computers. Some services will mix human readable and
>structured data so they can be used by both humans and computers.
>Others will support only formalised knowledge and will only be used
>by machines.
>
>This report is the synthesis from a strategic workshop on the
>semantic web which has been organised by the European Consortium in
>Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) for the European Union Future
>Emergent Technology program (EU-FET) and the US National Science
>Foundation (NSF). The workshop which was held in Sophia-Antipolis
>(France), October 3rd-5th, 2001, gathered 20 European and US
>researchers from the field of knowledge representation and
>engineering, database, worldwide web and man-machine communication.
>The participants considered the various aspects of languages and
>inferences, infrastructure, human-related issues, ontologies as well

Call for Papers
3rd VLDB Workshop on Technologies for E-Services (TES'02)
http://www.gkec.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/tes02
August 23-24, 2002
Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel
Hong Kong, China
In Conjunction with:
28th International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB 2002)
Workshop Objectives
===================
The next generation of applications will be developed in form of services
that are offered over a network, either a company's intranet or the
Internet. Service-based architectures depend on an infrastructure that
allows service providers to describe and advertise their services and
service consumers to discover and select the services that best fulfill
their requirements. Frameworks and messaging protocols for e-services in
stationary and mobile environments are being developed and standardized,
metadata and ontologies are being defined, and mechanisms are under
development for service composition, delivery, monitoring, and payment.
End-to-end security and quality of service guarantees will be essential for
the acceptance of e-services. As e-services become pervasive, e-service
management will play a central role.
The workshop's objective is to provide a forum for researchers and
practitioners to present new developments and experience reports. The goal
of the TES workshop is to identify the technical issues, models and
infrastructures that enable enterprises to provide e-services to other
businesses and individual customers. Therefore, we will include industry
sessions on various key application areas to be presented by distinguished
invited speakers.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
* E-service description and advertisement
* E-service location and selection
* E-service brokering
* E-service composition
* E-service invocation and delivery
* E-service monitoring
* E-service personalization
* E-service management and life-cycle
* E-service validation and rating models
* Pricing and payment models
* Quality of service guarantees
* Security and privacy in service discovery and delivery
* Secure messaging protocols
* XML-based protocols and description languages
* Business intelligence for e-services
* Business data exchange format and standards
* Interorganizational workflows
* Enterprise application integration to support service delivery
* Service-based architectures and their underlying technologies
* Availability, performance, and resource management of e-services
* Service-oriented application development
* Trading Hubs and e-service communities
* Standards for e-services
* Ontologies and metadata for e-services
* E-service applications
* Service delivery in mobile and sporadically connected environments
* Infrastructure for e-service delivery in environments with limited
resources.
