October 14, 2001 THEME The growth of the Internet and the expansion of e-commerce systems have accentuated pre-existing problems related with systems interoperability and the definition of common semantics throughout business organisations. Consequently, an increasing amount of cost and effort is dedicated to the integration of systems and applications. The issues involved, however, are not just related to infrastructure and technology. Indeed fundamental problems exist around the understanding of what 'concepts' are shared, how they relate and what mechanisms should be adopted to allow systems to communicate and interoperate at all levels. Genericity mechanisms, such as patterns, frameworks and components, have the potential for defining, modeling, designing and implementing shared concepts. Such mechanisms have inherited many object-oriented principles and built upon them to enhance the generalised nature of business problems and solutions both vertically (within the same domain) and horizontally (across different domains). Increasingly, these are supported by emerging 'ontological' definitions and related languages (e.g. XML) designed to exemplify genericity. The potential contribution of XML to the definition of business ontologies and semantics is also relevant. Researchers and practitioners world-wide are exploring the possibility of defining interoperable industry specifications based on XML and the definition of an Ontology Markup Language. The adoption and implementation of genericity mechanisms and ontological 'tools' is difficult to implement in 'greenfield' situations. These difficulties are exacerbated in 'brownfield' situations in which clear architectural separations do not exist and multiple technologies do exist. This workshop welcomes the participation of all academics, researchers and practitioners interested in approaches aimed at achieving the integration of enterprise systems SUBMISSION GUIDELINES The workshop seeks high quality submissions in two categories: Full technical papers, describing original, unpublished research (10 pages). Work-in-progress papers, describing on-going work and interim results (6 pages). All papers will be peer-reviewed by at least two referees and selected papers will be made available to participants online prior to the workshop. Guidelines for typesetting of camera-ready copies will be communicated to authors of accepted papers. The three best papers will be further reviewed and extended for publication in a special section of the Journal of Management Information Systems. At the same time these investments must compete with other initiatives to secure funding. E-business is a new frontier for IT investment. The complexity of benefits from IT investment in e-business arises from a range of issues such as the difficulty in isolating the benefits from other initiatives, the lag effects from delayed payoff, indirect payoff from investments made in the electronic infrastructure, and the need to coordinate efforts among business partners. It is necessary for e-business initiatives to objectively demonstrate the benefits received by the organization. The purpose of IT Investment Payoff in E-Business Environments special issue is to improve upon existing approaches for measuring IT investment payoff that are applicable to e-business initiatives as well as to find new innovative frameworks and methods for addressing the value of emerging IT for e-business. Recommended Topics The special issue invites papers that address the payoff from IT investment from e-business in any type of organization (business, government, not-for-profit, military etc.). Both applied and theoretical research will be promoted. We encourage submissions that relate payoff approaches from an international perspective. However, e-commerce is still dominated by the U.S. and a few other developed countries, whereas its adoption is highly uneven elsewhere. While global forces may encourage e-commerce use in all countries, variations in national context lead to major differences in the rate and nature of e-commerce adoption, and in its impacts on national economic and social structures. For this special issue, the journal seeks papers that address questions about the diffusion and impacts of e-commerce across different national environments. The following is a list of such issues, but contributors may address other related issues as well: * How do global trends such as technology innovation and economic liberalization influence international diffusion of the Internet and e-commerce? * What environmental factors influence the diffusion of e- commerce use within countries? For instance, how important are telecommunications networks, shipping and transportation, financial transfer mechanisms, skilled human resources? Do these factors limit the potential adoption of e- commerce in less developed countries? * How do national policies affect the adoption of e-commerce? These can include policies specifically related to e-commerce, such as digital signatures, or more general policies such as telecommunications or financial deregulation. * Is e-commerce being adopted as a substitute for traditional commerce channels, or as a complement to them? * What are the social and economic impacts of e-commerce, and how are they affected by national environments and policies? * Is there a global digital divide, and should it be a concern for national governments and international agencies? These papers may include country case studies, empirical data analyses, comparisons across countries (including small sets of countries in a region), industry sector studies, and studies of specific policy issues, as well as conceptual or theoretical papers. We encourage prospective authors to become familiar with TIS and to discuss possible articles with the Special Issue editor. Manuscript guidelines and a list of the titles and abstracts of articles published in TIS can be found on the journal's web site. Papers will be subject to the normal review process of The Information Society, and should follow the standard guidelines for submission to the journal.
