Subject: [AISWorld] CFP Special Issue on Blockchain Technology and
Applications for Information Systems and e-Business Management (ISeBM)
Date: Sun, 17 Mar 2019 20:40:55 +0800
From: Hu Daning <hdaning(a)gmail.com>
To: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org
Call for Papers: Special Issue of Information Systems and e-Business
Management (ISeBM) on Blockchain Technology and Applications
Editors-in-Chief: J. Becker; M.J. Shaw
Guest Editors:
Hsing Kenneth Cheng, University of Florida
Daning Hu, Southern University of Science and Technology
Thomas Puschmann, University of Zurich
J. Leon Zhao, City University of Hong Kong
The notion of blockchain technology and its application in cryptocurrency
has attracted huge attention due to the recent Bitcoin hype. The Economist
article of October 31, 2015 called blockchain as the trust machine that
will change how businesses will run and how transactions will be conducted.
No other single technology has been so hyped in recent years, even the
Internet or the Web. The year of 2017 has witnessed a tidal wave in
business investments and government initiatives. Blockchain technology is a
new type of distributed database technology that has the potential to
revolutionize how transaction information is stored and managed in
networked markets and institutions.
One of the most promising blockchain applications is smart contract that
uses blockchain to record and enforce the rules digitally encoded in
contracts. It can automatically trigger the execution of such rules if
certain conditions are met and they are detected by the blockchain. This
approach can ensure the credibility of the contracts without involving
third parties or intermediaries and thus can largely reduce the transaction
costs.
Due to its capability in keeping decentralized records and providing
automated mechanisms to enforce contracts, blockchain has great potential
in various business applications, such as digital currencies, recording
public information such as birth certificates or legal documents. It not
only can change the technologies that support the secure and efficient
storage and processing of information, but may also transform the business
principles and processes embedded in traditional centralized organizations
and societies. It is expected that blockchain and smart contract will
automate much of the clerical work in all types of organizations, thus
causing another wave of business redesign and reengineering.
There is no doubt that opportunities abound for scholars to systematically
study blockchain technology, particularly from the Information Systems (IS)
perspective. In this special issue on blockchain technology and applications
, we call for studies that adopt all IS research methods, such as design
science, behavioral science, and IS economics. Relevant topics for this
special issue may include (but not limited to):
• Blockchain technologies and applications
• Blockchain based business innovation
• Blockchain driven digital currencies
• Blockchain and smart contracts
• Blockchain induced redesign of business processes, models and
organizations.
• Blockchain and its impacts in public sectors
• Blockchain centric ecosystems and communities
• Business value of blockchain
• Acceptance of blockchain technologies in business organizations and among
individual users
• Privacy and security issues related to blockchain

STPSA 2019: The 14th IEEE International Workshop on Security, Trust, and
Privacy for Software Applications
In conjunction with the IEEE Conference on Computers, Software, &
Applications (COMPSAC)
Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, July 15-19
Workshop Website: https://ieeecompsac.computer.org/2019/stpsa/
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Goal of the workshop
-----------------------------
This workshop will bring researchers from academia and industry to
discuss methods and tools to achieve security, trust, and privacy goals
of both pervasive and non-pervasive software applications. This workshop
will focus on techniques, experiences, and lessons learned with respect
to the state of art for the security, trust, and privacy aspects of both
pervasive and non-pervasive software applications along with various
open issues.
Scope of the Workshop
-------------------------------
Information security has become a major concern for software and
applications. Software systems must be engineered with reliable
protection mechanisms with respect to security, privacy, and trust,
while still delivering the expected value of the software to their
customers. The traditional approaches to secure a system (e.g., IDS,
firewalls) are no longer sufficient to address many security, trust, and
privacy (STP) issues. These issues should be addressed by building more
effective STP-aware software applications. The principal obstacle in
developing STP-aware software is that current software specification,
design, implementation, and testing practices do not include adequate
methods and tools to achieve security, trust, and privacy goals.
Further, emerging techniques such as blockchain bring on new challenges
to adopt them into developing STP-aware software and applications. In
this workshop, we welcome papers on existing and emerging challenges and
requirements of security, privacy, and trust for software applications.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Security, trust, and privacy specific software development practices
- Security, trust, and privacy requirements elicitation and specification
- Models and languages for STP-aware software specification and design
- Architecture for STP-aware software development
- STP challenges for pervasive software applications
- Testing security, trust, and privacy properties of software applications
- STP management and usability issues in software applications
- User interfaces for STP-aware pervasive and non-pervasive software
- STP challenges in e-services, e.g. e-health, e-government, e-banking,
e-commerce, e-marketing and other web-based and pervasive applications
- STP challenges in mobile software applications
- STP challenges in sensor-based software applications
- User interfaces for secure and privacy-aware pervasive computing
applications
- STP-aware service discovery mechanisms for pervasive computing

aimed for the Rejuvenating Enterprise Systems special issue to ensure
that the submission will be handled by the right editors.
Review Strategy
A constructive rejection approach will be applied prior to the review
process. All submissions will be initially screened by all guest editors
as soon as the submission deadline passes. The authors whose articles
fail to meet the journal’s standards or specific requirements will be
notified soon after the submission deadline. The papers that pass the
initial screening and that may be accepted for publication subject to
certain conditions, will undergo a rigorous review process according to
the publication plan. Authors of articles that are expected to be
accepted, will be offered an opportunity to revise and resubmit their
papers within a specified period. At least two independent reviewers
shall review the submitted manuscripts based on their originality,
quality, and relevance to this special issue’s theme.
Idea in Brief
In this special issue, the guest editors seek a diverse collection of
articles that address the future of enterprise systems.
Enterprise systems have existed for decades, and the majority of large
organizations worldwide have implemented their enterprise systems
(Gattiker & Goodhue, 2005). However, fluctuating levels of success have
been reported over the years (Hustad & Olsen, 2014; Svejvig & Jensen,
2013). Companies of all sizes have become increasingly dependent on
enterprise systems to integrate their various business functions, manage
their operational and routine transactions, comply with regulations,
manage their global supply chains, and benefit from the systems’ timely
reporting capabilities (Haddara & Zach, 2011). Generally, enterprise
systems’ implementations are resource intensive and require considerable
financial investments. Their adoptions also result in widespread
organizational changes (Volkoff, Strong, & Elmes, 2007). Despite
enterprise systems’ demanding and risky implementation efforts, their
substantial business value is recognized (Tian & Xu, 2015).
The ex post literature is rich and diverse; however, an apparent gap in
enterprise systems’ future relates to emerging technologies (Elragal &
Haddara, 2012). Thus, there is a need to investigate how emerging
technologies can shape the future of such systems.
Currently, the characteristics of enterprise systems have radically
changed. Businesses require agility and flexibility. Therefore, among
others, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems should respond to
such dynamic needs of today’s businesses. New sourcing models for
enterprise systems have recently been offered, and cloud sourcing has
become a popular approach for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
in particular (El-Gazzar, Hustad, & Olsen, 2016). Moreover, new
applications have been integrated with enterprise systems, forming the
so-called hybrid systems. Such a hybrid system also incorporates systems
from multiple vendors, as well as integrates data from on-premises with
those on the cloud (Loebbecke, Thomas, & Ullrich, 2012). Enterprises
also seek to utilize enterprise systems in more intelligent ways by
analyzing their transaction data to support decision making on both
strategic and tactical levels. Future enterprise systems are expected to
support digital transformation to a greater extent.
We strongly believe that five areas are reshaping the future of
enterprise systems. Therefore, such systems need rejuvenation to sustain
their well-established presence in organizations.
These areas are as follows:
Area 1. Cloud computing
Area 2. Gamification
Area 3. Blockchain technology
Area 4. Big data analytics
Area 5. Digitalization
Call for Contributions
In this special issue, we seek to attract researchers’ works that
present novel approaches to inquiries into technical, operational,
economic, and social impacts of emerging technologies with regard to
their connection to and impact on enterprise systems. The special issue
is open to all types of research methodologies and especially encourages
a diversity of theoretical and empirical approaches.
Basically, we are looking for theoretically well-defined research
problems that are relevant to the topics intertwined in this special
issue, with the objective to advance theories and methods or open the
door for future knowledge to unfold. Accordingly, we differentiate
between informative, theoretical and practical research problems,
welcoming both scholarly pieces and studies with concrete applications.
As a result, we expect the papers to demonstrate academic value and
illustrate how the research contributes to businesses and society in
general.
For more information about the special issue and the topics’ details,
please visit
http://iris.cs.aau.dk/index.php/special-issue-call-for-papers.html
Please don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions.
Looking forward for your research!
Regards,
Moutaz

Subject: [AISWorld] Call for Papers: HICSS 53- Practice-based IS
Research Minitrack
Date: Fri, 15 Mar 2019 17:00:53 +0000
From: William J Kettinger <wkttngr(a)clemson.edu>
To: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
Practice-based IS Research Minitrack – HICSS 53
Description
This mini-track seeks to encourage practice-based research on new and
emerging IS issues in organizations. Practice-based research aspires to
bridge the gap between academic theory and practice; it aspires both to
introduce researchers to state of the art practices and issues from
industry as well as introduce managers to research that makes sense of
and brings coherence to the issues they face. The methods used in
practice-based research are often exploratory, field-based studies
involving interviews, observations, and/or descriptive surveys. The
intense pressure to achieve methodological distinction and theoretical
contribution often results in very current practice-based topics being
eschewed by researchers, because the topics themselves are not mature
enough in practice to achieve desirable samples or sample sizes, nor are
they conducive to theorizing since so little is known. These are
precisely the reasons that exploratory, practice-based research can play
a tremendous role in helping establish and lay the foundations of a
research domain while providing insights into an emerging topic.
The objective of this minitrack is to encourage practice-based research
in information systems and to disseminate the results of that research
in a manner that makes its relevance and utility readily apparent. This
minitrack invites authors to submit in-depth research that provides rich
stories, unique insights, and useful conceptual frameworks for
information systems practice. Papers might be based upon single cases,
multiple case, field interviews, or, less commonly, literature itself.
Experimental research and survey research are less likely to achieve the
goal of providing rich insight for practice. While it is assumed that
researchers are guided by theory, it is not expected that the
submissions to this minitrack make distinct or novel theoretical
contributions. The contributions should focus on distinct and unique
lessons for practice. The minitrack chairs coordinates with MIS
Quarterly Executive in selecting papers for fast-tracking to an issue of
MISQE.
Overall, this minitrack aims to:
* Showcase high quality practice-oriented IS research
* Promote practice-oriented IS research as a key source of insight and
guidance for digital leaders
* Provide researchers a platform to present and discuss their
practice-oriented IS research findings and expose the community to
current challenges in creating value with IT
* Help identify the most challenging managerial issues for digital/IT
leaders and frame them as new questions that could guide future
practice-oriented IS research.
Dates:
* April 15, 2019: Paper submission begins.
* June 15, 2019 | 11:59 pm HST: Paper submission deadline
* August 17, 2019 | 11:59 pm HST: Notification of Acceptance/Rejection
* September 22, 2019: Deadline for authors to submit final manuscript
for publication
* October 1, 2019: Deadline for at least one author of each paper to
register for the conference
* January 7, 2020: Symposia, Workshops, and Tutorials
* January 8-10, 2020: Paper Presentations
PAPER SUBMISSION
HICSS Author Guidelines:
http://hicss.hawaii.edu/tracks-and-minitracks/authors/
Additional guidance for authors of practice-based IS research papers
This practice track has run for a number of years at HICSS. We are not
just seeking research with strong relevance for practitioners, but
manuscripts that are written in a way that makes them easily accessible
to such a reader. This means that any accepted manuscript will not
follow the traditional “rules” of writing for an academic audience.
If you are not a regular reader of MISQE articles we would advise you to
read a few so as to get a sense of their style, structure, focus and
content. Some general guidelines for writing such articles include:
* Simplify reality, but don’t be simplistic
* Keep theory and methodology in the background (perhaps include your
methods in an appendix, but write it so that it is accessible to
non-academic readers).
* Use literature and in-depth evidence to give credibility and
generalizability.
Typically, such articles loosely follow this structure:
Short lead in
Motivate the practitioner reader in 2-3 sentences. Why should they read
the article? What you write should resonate closely with them; perhaps
it is a problem that they recognize that you are now going to help them
solve.
Short introduction to topic
Frame the topic of the article. Use footnotes rather than traditional
academic referencing style when using prior research.
Extensive research findings
Use headings and figures/tables to communicate findings. Address
solutions to managerial challenges. Present lessons learned from the
research and recommendations.
Actionable guidelines
Actionable guidelines include action verbs, not passive verbs like
“understand,” “assess, “think,” or “get commitment.” Tell the reader
what to actually do, or what to change. For example, if getting
commitment is important, say how to get the required level of commitment.
Appendix
Present an overview of research methods. Remember to write in a way that
is accessible to an academic audience unfamiliar with the nuances of
academic research.

Subject: [AISWorld] CFP: special issue, Blockchain for Development
Date: Thu, 14 Mar 2019 18:36:42 +0000
From: Paulo Rupino Cunha <rupino(a)dei.uc.pt>
To: ISWorld list <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
Information Technology for Development (ITD) journal
(2017 impact factor 1.387)
Special Issue on Blockchain for Development
https://eden.dei.uc.pt/~rupino/ITD/
Aims and Scope
Blockchain is emerging as a very promising technology. It is based on a
shared, distributed ledger, where transactions can only be registered by
consensus in a network of peers, using cryptographic mechanisms that
render the records virtually immutable. This enables transparency,
auditability, and resilience. Additionally, Blockchains can store and
enforce smart contracts – pieces of code that are executed automatically
once predetermined conditions are met – further reducing uncertainty and
promoting confidence among stakeholders that would not normally trust
each other and, thus, dispensing with middlemen.
This has led to innovative experiments in high profile areas, such as
financial services, insurance, healthcare, value chains, shipping and
logistics, Internet-of-Things, Intellectual Property Rights licensing,
and crowdfunding, among others.
In addition, Blockchain holds a huge potential for development in
general and emerging economies in particular. It can foster more
democratic mechanisms and help fight corruption. It can enable secure
and lean ID mechanisms, reduce the number of unbanked, prevent voting
fraud and tax evasion, improve government management of public benefits,
reduce commissions on remittances of emigrants, control donations and
charity initiatives, or ensure integrity of public records.
Of course, there are risks to account for when deploying
Blockchain-based systems. For instance, its key strengths can be
challenged if a coalition of malicious actors manages to garner more
than 50% of the resources used to produce the blocks; care must be taken
to ensure that data to be recorded reflects true world events;
mechanisms must exist to ensure that the system and smart contract code
does not contain unintended loopholes and flaws. Other problems, related
to resources, exist, if traditional proof-of-work consensus mechanisms
are used, namely the need for huge processing power, which, in turn, may
draw a significant amount of energy from the public grid.
In the past, we have seen emerging economies lag in ICT adoption when
compared with developed counterparts. With Blockchain, however, the
opportunity exists to implement the technology in the same time frame,
to address afflicting areas and even leapfrog established solutions in
others.
Topics addressed
In general, we invite papers dealing with Blockchain that address a
broad range of issues associated with development. In particular, we
seek papers offering contributions in the following, non-exhaustive, topics:
● The social, human, and economic development impact of Blockchain
● Relationships between National Culture, and the Blockchain Technology
& Philosophy
● National Impact Assessments of Blockchain Technology including
Benefits & Dangers to governance, national unity, and democracy
● Blockchain Technology & Small Island States
● Blockchain for Development case studies, applications, and implementations
● Alternative ID systems based on Blockchain
● Blockchain in e-government and public administration
● Barriers and enablers in the adoption of Blockchain for Development
● Blockchain and traditional pain points in Development ● Blockchain and
voting
● Blockchain and the legal system
● Blockchain and regulatory frameworks
● Smart contracts
● Alternative uses of Blockchain
● The use of crypto currencies in countries in crisis ● Tokens, ICOs,
fundraising ● Blockchain and disruptive innovation
● Business models supported on Blockchain
● Blockchain Technology & SMEs
Deadlines
Deadline for submission: November 1, 2019
Notification of initial acceptance: March 15, 2020
Deadline for revised papers: June 15, 2020

Submitted papers should follow the instructions for authors and indicate
“Blockchain for Development” special issue when uploading their papers.
Submissions to the special issue should be full research papers or
practice papers. Each submitted paper will be peer-reviewed in the same
manner as other submissions to the Journal of Information Technology for
Development. Relevance, quality and originality of the contribution are
the major acceptance criteria for each submission. After initial
screening, papers are reviewed by selected members of the editorial
board and peers from an international pool for quality, consistency and
research contribution. Authors are welcome to nominate one of the
special issue editors or preferred reviewers when submitting their paper
where no conflict of interest exist (an existing business or
professional partnership, past or present association as thesis advisor
or thesis student, and/or collaboration on a project or on a
book/article/report/paper or co-editing of a journal, compendium, or
conference proceedings constitutes a conflict of interest). Papers
submitted to this journal must contain original results and must not be
submitted elsewhere while being evaluated. If a duplication is found,
papers are subject to being rejected for that reason alone.

Trust has become one of the most discussed topics concerning social
media and its impact on society. Recent debates about fake-news,
post-truth-era, echo chambers and filter bubbles increase this
impression. However, trust is a complex and multidimensional concept.
Concerning social media, trust is often focused on trusting the platform
not to leak private information, trusting the source not to send false
information and trusting the algorithm not to promote harmful content.
In each case, trust is seen as a driver for a more meaningful
relationship. Recent debates about the impact of social media on
society, however, exemplify that solving trust related issues are
complex and in some cases may be impossible under the current design and
paradigms of social media. One reason for this complexity can found in
the often conflicted debate related to solutions, such as privacy vs
transparency, centralised vs decentralised architecture, encrypted vs
open messages, content promotion vs subscription revenue. In the context
of this debate solutions ranging from censorship for increased control
and blockchain for accountability is mentioned. However, most solutions
approach the underlying challenges from a ‘fix’ or ‘patch’ perspective
which might not always work. This special edition seeks to re-imagine
social media that aims to create and empower meaningful relationships to
overcome the mostly socio-technical, economical, psychological and
ethical challenges of current Social Media Applications. A specific
focus is placed on the concept of trust and how Social Media
Applications of the future can promote trustworthiness throughout
inter-human and human-machine interactions. The underlying question
therefore is: Can we do better?
Based on this question, the main objective of this special edition is to
re-imagine social media and social networking applications in general as
a more organic and dynamic entity that interacts with digital citizens
and their environment by meeting their ‘trust needs’, and explores means
for this technology to support a more trustworthy and positive
interaction with both human and non-human (digital/robot) entities. For
this we encourage the submission of ongoing research addressing current
Social Media challenges that inspire future developments. The submission
of radically new and novel social media concepts is encouraged. This can
include entire platforms/concepts or specific topics such as:
Ethics, Privacy, and Control.
Maintaining psychological wellbeing in a world of Social Media.
User Attitudes Towards Trust Issues within Social Media.
Technological means to support the increase of trustworthiness within
Social Media.
Creating and supporting meaningful relationships within and through
Social Media.
Connected Digital Citizenship within Smart Environments via Social Media.
Means of fostering social relationships and networks with Machines, such
as Chat Bots, Robots.
The use of visual interfaces, such as AR/VR, to increase the
trustworthiness of relationships in Social Media.
Ad-hoc networks and proximity-based Social Networks to promote
trustworthiness.
Decentralised and Hybrid Architectures related to the Next Generation
Internet.
Alternative business models and value systems for Social Media.
Reduction and identification of hate speech and fake-news.
The role of social media in the debate surrounding the debate of the
Post-truth era.
Topics focused on Artificial Emotional Intelligence applied to Social
Media.
Papers can address, but are not limited to, the following questions:
What principles can be applied to increase trust in social media based
interactions?
Are social media applications fundamentally broken? What is a viable
alternative?
How can users control their data without breaking the underlying
business model of Social Media Applications?
What impact do breaches of trust have on user attitudes and behaviours?
What are possible alternative business models for Social Media
Applications that shift the underlying model from Shareholder Value to
Stakeholder Value?
Submissions can include early-stage research. However, the submission
should contain an empirical element, which is past the idea or concept
phase. Therefore, at the least, preliminary (empirical) evaluation data
is essential. Considering the complexity of the topic comprehensive
literature reviews are accepted in cases in which no empirical data
exists. Submissions from a wide range of fields, such as social science,
computer science, humanities, medical science and business studies are
encouraged.
*Submission *
Extended abstracts should be no more than 1,000 words and include a
brief summary of your proposed paper and a short description explaining
how it relates to the special issue theme and submitted by the 31.03.2019.
Invited paper submissions will be informed by the 5th of April 2019.
Approximately 10-12 papers will be sent out for a full review.
Therefore, the invitation to submit a full article does not guarantee
acceptance into the special issue. The special issue is scheduled for
publication in late 2019 / early 2020.
