One traditional focus of BPM research has always been the role of information technology in enacting, managing and innovating business processes. This focus has led to the rise of workflow management systems, BPM suites, process mining technology and other key technological innovations. This special issue will explore how digital technology and innovation enables, constrains, transforms or otherwise upends the design, enactment, management, and analysis of operational business processes. We will also look at how technology, techniques and theory from the management of business processes can assist an understanding of innovation and change processes. Recent innovations in Process Organization Studies (Langley and Tsoukas, 2017) and Routine Dynamics (Feldman et al, 2016) also provide a rich set of ideas for theorizing processual phenomena from the ground up. The timing of this special is motivated by the on-going infusion of new digital technologies – mobile and distributed computing, social media, digital platforms, data analytics, artificial intelligence, blockchains, cloud computing, and so forth – into various aspects of business processes. These innovations generate new possibilities and increase uncertainty for how business processes operate, how they should be managed, and how process innovations unfold (vom Brocke & Schmiedel, 2015; vom Brocke & Mendling, 2018). With this special issue, our aim is to highlight the need to further our understanding about the dialectic between business process management and digital innovation: how is business process management affected by, and affects, digital innovation? *What can I contribute?* We envisage (but in no way limit) attention to at least four broad themes: * *The nature of business process management in the digital age:* how do digital innovations transform business process management methods, tools, systems, architectures, skill set, capabilities, organizational culture? Services computing management involves: 1) Ensuring services computing strategy is allied with how the organization manages IT and how IT is aligned with organizational strategy, 2) Designing, building, sourcing and deploying computing solutions that are resilient, trusted, efficient, and address Quality of Service (QoS) expectations, and 3) Overseeing all matters related to business and IT services operations and resources both across business domains and within domains such as finance and healthcare. The pervasive nature of services computing management is exhibited in almost all industry settings. In everyday life, new business service innovations will give rise to an emergent, data-focused economy that will only pick up steam as both consumer and business utilization of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies is advanced. Concomitantly, we are moving towards an era of Artificially Intelligent (AI) services, which are deployed in multi-scale, complex distributed architectures. These AI services can be formed from high-level computational intelligence that leverages emerging analytical techniques associated with Big Data, Web analytics, data and text mining, ontology engineering, semantic web, and many other advances. At the same time, it becomes increasingly important to anticipate technical and practical challenges and to identify best practices learned through experience. In addition, researchers, businesses, and policymakers have seized on Machine Learning (ML) services to support their decisions. ML services will catalyze smart application areas such as drone and robotic computing. ML services will continue to improve with analytics discipline advancements in areas such as data/text mining, predictive analytics, and algorithms that model high-level abstractions in data by using multiple processing layers with complex structures or non-linear transformations. At the same time, the design, development, and deployment of ML services present novel methodological and technological challenges. The goal of this special issue is to present both innovative and practical solutions to managerial and technical challenges. In addition, new and compelling service computing technologies are of interest. This special issue will share research and related the practical experience in order to benefit readers, and it will provide clear proof that services computing management is playing an ever-increasing important and critical role in supporting computational intelligence – especially in exciting new cross-discipline research topics in computer science, information systems, and the management sciences. The papers will all have the same status and follow the same formatting guidelines in the proceedings but will receive special treatment during the reviewing phase. In particular, each paper type will be subject to its own evaluation criteria. The Programme Committee will also make sure that there is a reasonable balance of the paper types accepted. At submission time the paper has to be clearly identified as belonging to one of the following categories. Research papers: These are "standard" papers presenting a novel method, technique or analysis with appropriate empirical or other types of evaluation as a proof-of-concept. The main evaluation criteria here will be originality, technical soundness and validation. In-use papers: Here we are expecting papers describing applications of knowledge management and engineering in real environments. Applications need to address a sufficiently interesting and challenging problem on real-world datasets, involving many users, etc. The focus is less on the originality of the approach and more on presenting systems that solve a significant problem while addressing the particular challenges that come with the use of real-world data. Evaluations are essential for this type of paper and should involve a representative subset of the actual users of the system. Position papers: We invite researchers to also publish position papers, which describe novel and innovative ideas. Position papers may also comprise an analysis of currently unsolved problems, or review these problems from a new perspective, in order contribute to a better understanding of these problems in the research community. The framework is then applied to explain the diffusion of capability maturity model (CMM). This research contributes to information systems theory by (a) illustrating how several different theoretical perspectives (i.e., forced-selection, efficient choice, fashion, and fad) can be used to explain an IT management innovation diffusion; (b) identifying the specific limitations of each perspective; and (c) demonstrating how these perspectives can be reconciled and yield a holistic understanding of the diffusion trajectory. Anchoring on construal level theory, we differentiate two forms of contextual review cue—namely, temporal cue (i.e., when the review was posted) and social cue (i.e., who posted the review)—and posit their individual and joint moderation effects on the relationship between product review content and perceived review helpfulness. The experimental results reveal interesting insights. First, when the temporal cue indicates near distance, concrete product review content is perceived as more helpful. By contrast, abstract review content is perceived as more helpful when the temporal cue is distant. Second, social cues are non-instrumental in affecting the evaluation of concrete product review content; however, near social cues have bearings on the evaluation of abstract product review content. Third, we also find a significant joint effect of temporal and social cues on the relationship between product review concreteness and review helpfulness. The assessment of abstract reviews’ helpfulness is strengthened when both social and temporal cues reveal near psychological distance. This research contributes not only to the product review literature by providing integrated understanding of product review (i.e., considering both content and contextual cues), but also to construal level theory by identifying the moderating consequences of temporal and social cues as rooted in two dimensions of psychological distance. Davison, City University of Hong Kong Abstract The deep embeddedness of information systems (IS) in many areas of human activity poses a dual challenge to the IS discipline: advancing an expanding disciplinary boundary that includes an increasing set of IS topics; and engaging with other disciplines in order to understand IS-enabled phenomena. An inability to meet these challenges could lead to conceptually stunted development of the IS discipline, missed opportunities to inform other disciplines and a failure to effectively contribute to solving the pressing problems of our time. We undertook this study to investigate both how IS research has addressed these challenges in the past and how it can continue to do so in the future. Drawing on the concept of knowledge-materialization through knowledge-creating practice, and based on approaches for disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge creation, we theorize four different types of knowledge contribution that IS researchers can produce, encompassing both an intradisciplinary and an interdisciplinary view. We then analyze a wide-ranging sample of research studies published in 176 papers in the AIS basket of eight journals to investigate the nature of their contribution vis-à-vis these types. We find that the predominant types of knowledge contribution are intradisciplinary, with relatively few interdisciplinary contributions. Based on our analysis, we explain why each type of knowledge contribution is important to the IS discipline and provide guidance for IS scholars in planning their research strategies for these contributions. Leidner, Baylor University Abstract This paper presents a polylithic framework of review and theory development (RTD) papers. Based upon a reflective analysis of review papers that I have written, read, and/or reviewed, I build a framework suggesting four types of RTD papers: organizing reviews, assessing reviews, specific-theorizing reviews, and broad-theorizing reviews. The four types vary according to the research focus and research objectives, with research focus ranging from primarily description to the identification of gaps, and research objective ranging from primarily synthesizing to primarily theorizing. The framework and accompanying discussion are intended to provide scholars a perspective of the different ways that theory development and review papers intersect. The paper proposes criteria to help evaluate the quality of RTD papers and provides suggestions to authors on how to craft RTD papers.
