WITS Feeder Conference on Security and Risk in SMAC and Cyber-Physical Systems: Transforming Business in a Secure Way
Website: http://www.mchabit.org/SMAC-Security-2017
Date: May 25, 2017 to May 27, 2017
Location: Cal Poly Pomona, College of Business Administration, Pomona, California, USA
Today’s business is being transformed by digital technologies characterized by the proliferation of always connected
mobile devices and apps, the widespread usage of social media, the maximization of the data
value through analytics, and the virtualization of computing resources in the cloud. The confluence of social
media, mobility, analytics and cloud computing is collectively referred to as the SMAC stack which provides
the next-generation IT architecture. The SMAC stack is now being labeled as the Third Platform of
Computing by IDC, the Nexus of Forces by Gartner, and the Fifth Wave of Corporate IT by many technology
futurists. Intimately tied to the SMAC stack are cyber-physical systems (CPS), including Internet-of-Things.
CPS are the enabling computer-based algorithms, devices, and networks behind many SMAC applications,
and these create tight integration with SMAC application users through control and monitoring.
With the SMAC/CPS technologies, the mobile devices and apps are building ubiquitous connectivity for
marketplaces, social media is reshaping the relationships between business constituencies, analytics are
providing deeper insights to enable informed business decisions, and the cloud is changing the way we
compute, store and share business data. The SMAC/CPS technologies today are reengineering business
operations, reinventing business models, and driving corporate strategies and innovations. However, the
disruptive nature of these technologies often outpaces an organization’s ability to properly assess the
associated risks. Given that so many different systems are developed and interconnected in the SMAC
stack, the attack surface expands and security breaches are only expected to increase. To counter this
eventuality, organizations need a robust enterprise security strategy in place. As business leaders are eager
to integrate SMAC platforms to stay competitive, their efforts have to be balanced with strong security
policies.
Jointed by the Center of Information Assurance, the Mitchell C. Hill Center for Applied Business Information
Technology (MCHABIT) is proud to sponsor the “WITS Feeder Workshop on Security and Risk in SMAC and
Cyber-Physical Systems” at Cal Poly Pomona. Cal Poly Pomona has been named a National Center of
Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense Education and the MCHABIT’s mission is to
provide a focal point and leadership role in applied business information technology through polytechnic
education, applied research, and industry partnership.
Additionally, the conference is intended to serve as a feeder conference for Workshop on Information
Technologies and Systems (WITS). The goal of the feeder conference is to provide feedback to participants
to improve and enhance submissions to the WITS conference held in December. Many papers presented at
WITS routinely advance to publications in top-tier MIS journal outlets.
To facilitate extreme interaction, the conference will try technology-enabled interaction before, during, and
after the conference. Additionally, the conference will also feature industry speakers and sessions for
research tools and demos in the SMAC stack. All papers will be posted to a password protected site ahead
of time. All audience members will be expected to have laptops or smart devices up during presentations,
and should post comments and generate ideas on the fly.
The top 3 papers will automatically be accepted to the 2017 WITS conference and all papers will be
considered for a special issue of Information Technology and Management on SMAC and Cyber-Physical
Systems.
Two nights hotel and all meals will be provided for 25 conference participants. There is no registration fee
for participants. Conference participants must pay for their own transportation.
Submission call: This is a call for papers for the “WITS Feeder Workshop on Security and Risk in SMAC
and Cyber-Physical Systems”. Serving as a feeder workshop for the 2017 WITS conference in Seoul, South
Korea, the purpose of the conference is to present and improve cutting edge work, as well as to lay the
foundation for future work in this emerging area of research.
Submission format instructions: Submitted regular research papers are limited to 15 double spaced,

*Special Issue in Business & Information Systems Engineering on “Smart
Cities and Digitized Urban Management”*
**
*** Deadline has been extended to 15 July 2017. Papers with a focus on
energy and transportation topics linked to smart city research are
invited to submit drafts to the Energy Informatics & Management
conference in Rotterdam (http://www.erasmusenergyforum.com/science-day/)
to receive feedback from the guest editors. EIM 2017 takes place on 28
June 2017, the submission deadline is 4 April 2017. You may submit your
draft as a regular paper with a note stating that you are preparing your
manuscript for submission to the special issue. These EIM page limit of
6 pages is waived for these submissions. Papers with a different smart
city focus are still encouraged to submit to the SI since we aim for
topical plurality. ***
The Smart City concept stands at the confluence of several global
technological, socioeconomic, and environmental megatrends. On the
technological front, Big Data, analytics, block chain, and the Internet
of Things enable an ever more interconnected network of people,
services, and infrastructures. On the socioeconomic front, urbanization
drives people to the cities in search for a better life, demographic
developments alter the very structures of society, and a new wave of
migration uproots people and recombines social and cultural backgrounds
of populations around the globe. Finally, from an environmental
perspective, climate change and pollution make entire stretches of land
uninhabitable, endanger coastal areas on every continent, and are a
widespread cause of unrest and strife.
Cities are where these trends meet, being the cause of and solution to
many of the associated challenges. Cities are responsible for most of
the emissions heating the planet, but they are also the places where
people turn to and move to, where even small adjustments can have
tremendous impact. This is particularly relevant for some individual
cities (e.g., in Asia) that show a tendency to grow together towards
enormous metro-regions with unprecedented sustainability challenges.
Simultaneously, the interaction and integration of smart cities with
their outskirts as well as more rural “satellites” becomes a pressing issue.
Using information systems to improve all of the facets of urban life is
the core of the Smart City paradigm. Therefore, this special issue seeks
high-quality theoretical, empirical, and design-oriented contributions
that outline and demonstrate how IS research can affect and improve
urban socio-technical systems and address the issues outlined
previously. As the topic is inherently transdisciplinary, we are
particularly looking for manuscripts that seek to have an impact within
and outside the IS discipline.
All defining aspects of “smart cities” such as transport, energy, waste,
buildings, living, government, economy, and people are of interest.
Relevant topic areas include, but are not limited to:
·Information systems for intergenerational collaboration in urban quarters
·Sharing economy and resource efficiency
·Energy informatics and urban smart grids
·Emergency response and climate change action
·Information technology for coastal management and protection
·E-government initiatives for local inclusion in smart city quarters
·Urban, inter-urban and urban-rural intermodal mobility and smart
transportation
·IS-induced business model innovation for smart cities
·IS-enabled citizen acceptance and user-participation/community-sourcing
in smart city concepts
·Migration and cultural inclusion
·Open data and local governments

January 3-6, 2018 (Wednesday-Saturday)
Hilton Waikoloa Village (http://www.hiltonwaikoloavillage.com)
Minitrack: Knowledge Value, Success and Performance Measurements
(http://hicss.hawaii.edu/tracks-51/knowledge-innovation-and-entrepreneurial-…)
Part of the Track: Knowledge Innovation and Entrepreneurial Systems
Minitrack description:
Research into knowledge systems, knowledge management (KM),
organizational memories, and organizational learning has been affected
by investigations such as implementation aspects, system developments,
or knowledge flows during a number of years. Therefore, a high maturity
level of KM research has been achieved. However, organizational
knowledge/KM initiatives are more and more faced with budget cuts and
justification demands due to intense competition in today’s business
environments. The influences of the rapid pace of globalization and of
the ongoing liberalization of national and international markets lead to
the emergence of increased pressure on existing companies. Project
managers of knowledge/KM initiatives like Chief Knowledge Officers need
to justify their budgets and, thus, are in need of qualitative and
quantitative evidence of the initiatives’ success. In addition, ROI
calculations and traditional accounting approaches do not tell an
adequate story when proposing knowledge-based initiatives. This
minitrack explores research into strategies, methodologies, and stories
that relate to measuring this success. In addition, this minitrack will
be used to explore the bodies of performance measurements that define
the current state of research in measuring knowledge system, KM,
organizational memory, and organizational learning success. Eventually,
another purpose of this minitrack is to present research on how to value
knowledge-based initiatives.
Topics relevant for submissions include, but are not limited to, the
following:
* Frameworks and models for assessing knowledge systems, knowledge
management, and/or organizational memory systems
* Methodologies and processes for measuring knowledge systems, knowledge
management and/or organizational memory success and performance
* Impact of knowledge use, knowledge management strategy, organization,
systems, culture, and other issues on knowledge
management/organizational memory success
* Organizational effectiveness/efficiency due to knowledge
management/organizational memory/organizational learning, knowledge and
organizational memory use
* Knowledge systems, knowledge management, organizational memory, and
organizational learning metrics
* Knowledge systems, knowledge management, organizational memory, and
organizational learning success factors and key performance indicators
* Benchmarking of knowledge systems/knowledge management/organizational
memory initiatives
* Case studies of knowledge systems, knowledge management and
organizational memory success and performance measurements
* Measuring knowledge systems, knowledge management and/or
organizational memory performance in global organizations and globally
dispersed communities
* Effectiveness and/or efficiency of knowledge systems/knowledge
management/organizational memory systems
* Modeling and measuring the impact of social software on knowledge
system/knowledge management performance
* Defining knowledge systems, knowledge management and organizational
memory success
* Rigorous anecdotes and user stories and their theoretical basis to
facilitate the value of knowledge-based initiatives
* Developing grounded theory approaches to valuing knowledge-based
initiatives
* Understanding knowledge-based initiatives’ activities and output as
service offerings and exploring their productivity
* Usage, adoption and success of knowledge management methods

CALL FOR PAPERS
*HICSS 51January 3-6, 2018 *Hilton Waikoloa Village Big Island, Hawaii
*MINI-TRACK: Analytics in Support of Continuous Knowledge Creation*
The exponential growth of organizational storage has led to a focus on Big
Data and the demand for individual’s capable of agilely moving between the
data flows and extracting both operational information and knowledge from
this ever-increasing store of data. These capabilities have been attributed
to the role of Data Scientist. With data being the foundation for the
development of information and knowledge, this mini-track seeks a focus on
both an organizational and pedagogical perspective for the development and
recognition of the Data Scientist. The skill set of the Data Scientist has
focused on the abilities of programming, business insights and statistical
model building. However, with the rapid accumulation of data stores in
organizations, the transfer of data to information and knowledge has become
more complex and prior techniques must give way to processes that allow
continuous knowledge creation.
Paper submissions are encouraged that: further expand and explain the role
of the data scientist in organizational knowledge creation; develop and
expand the skill set of the data scientist role with respect to maintaining
knowledge creation in an organization; explain the techniques necessary to
ensure continuous knowledge creation. Paper topics include, but are not
limited to:
· Theoretical contributions to the recognition of the data scientist
· Development frameworks for the use of Big Data flows
· Management and construction of disparate data sources
· Pedagogical requirements for creating the data scientist in
Industry and Universities
· Empirical studies converting Big Data to actionable information
and knowledge
· Case Studies on data scientist success
· Methodologies for determining the frequency and granularity of
data stream snapshots necessary for knowledge creation
