Conference Venue
The venue will be the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel in Flushing, New York
City. New York City is an international tourist destination, receiving 56
million tourists in 2014 alone. Several sources have ranked New York the most
photographed city in the world. Times square, known as the city's heart, is
the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway theatre district. The Statue of
Liberty greets new arrivals to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early
20th century, and is a globally recognized symbol of the United States. Flush-
ing is associated by many with the National Tennis Centre, since Flushing
Meadows has been the home of the US Open Grand Slam tennis tournament every
year since 1978.
New York is the most populous city in the United States and one of the most
populous urban agglomerations in the world. Situated in one of the world's
largest natural harbours, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of
which is a separate county of New York State. The conference hotel is situated
in the Queens borough, just a two-minute walk from the Flushing-Main Street
rail station. Direct train lines take you directly from there to Times Square
in just over 45 minutes, which is fast for New York City. The Museum of Modern
Art can be reached in under 40 mins, Grand Central Terminal in 40 mins, the
Empire State Building under 50 mins, and The High Line Park in 50 minutes.
The hotel is also close to LaGuardia Airports and JFK. LaGuardia is just 3
miles away and the hotel offers a complementary shuttle service. John F.
Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is 10 miles away and can be reached within
30 minutes by taxi. The hotel is situated in a vibrant Asian district that
offers a variety of Eastern cuisine, as well as many stores and shops.
Sponsor
The conference is sponsored by the Association for Logic Programming (ALP),
LogicBlox Inc., Semantic Systems, and UT Dallas.
Financial Assistance
The Association for Logic Programming has funds to assist financially disad-
vantaged participants and, especially, students to enable them to attend the

Call for Papers
CAiSE 2017 - 29th International Conference on Advanced Information
Systems Engineering
12-16 June 2017, Essen, Germany

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Organizations (private or public) are entering in the digital world
where real time data is available about their operations, their
operating environments, third-party services offered to increase their
performance as well as chances in the demands of their customers. This
data abundance offers new opportunities but also raises new challenges
for *information systems*. The systems have to exploit these data to
help (networked-) organizations to decide and conduct appropriate
business transformations necessary to guarantee their survival in a
continuously changing world.
The digitalization of the world, the availability of the data in
real-time and the increasing connections of things, IT-systems and
organizations significantly increase the role of information systems in
the organizations during the last decades. Historically, enabled by
databases and file systems technologies supporting data storage and
retrieval facilities, information systems have been proven instrumental
in supporting management issues associated with the optimization and
partial automation of processes and document flows in more efficient
organizations.
With the internet and web technologies, together with an increased
quality of the information, information systems have started to
progressively be considered as a centre of profit, rather than as a
centre of costs. The transformation of data into information intensive
services creating new customer/client value has led private and public
organizations to reshape their business value proposition. Architecture
of information systems has evolved to enable increasingly interconnected
*service systems*.
Today, technologies (like IoT and natural interfaces) are becoming more
and more pervasive allowing to sense more and more data on all the
facets of an organization and of its environment. The collection of data
is no longer limited to its processes and information flows. Data is
available about almost any relevant aspect of the organization. With
the support of new computational and cognitive technologies for managing
this abundance of data, the key challenge is to evolve information
systems into *smart systems*. These systems have to be sufficiently
agile to rapidly analyze, predict and manage the needed disruptive and
incremental business transformations of operations. From a centre of
profit, information systems are now becoming the centre for
sustainability of the organizations.

---------------------*
Submission Deadlines**
*---------------------*
*Main Conference Abstract Submission: 28.11.2016
Main Conference Paper Submission: 04.12.2016 (strict!)
Workshop Proposals: 20.10.2016
CAiSE Forum: 20.03.2017
Doctoral Consortium: 20.03.2017
---------------------*
Types of contributions **
*---------------------
We invite four types of original and scientific papers:
* *Formal and/or technical papers* describe original solutions
(theoretical, methodological or conceptual) in the field of IS
engineering. A technical paper should clearly describe the situation or
problem tackled, the relevant state of the art, the position or solution
suggested and the potential - or, even better, the evaluated - benefits
of the contribution.
* *Empirical evaluation papers* evaluate existing problem situations or
validate proposed solutions with scientific means, i.e. by empirical
studies, experiments, case studies, simulations, formal analyses,
mathematical proofs, etc. Scientific reflection on problems and
practices in industry also falls into this category. The topic of the
evaluation presented in the paper as well as its causal or logical
properties must be clearly stated. The research method must be sound and
appropriate.
* *Experience papers *present problems or challenges encountered in
practice, relate success and failure stories, or report on industrial
practice. The focus is on "what" and on lessons learned, not on an
in-depth analysis of "why". The practice must be clearly described and
its context must be given. Readers should be able to draw conclusions
for their own practice.
* *Exploratory papers* can describe completely new research positions or
approaches, in order to face a generic situation arising because of new
ICT tools or new kinds of activities or new IS challenges. They must

13-17, 2017. The LAK17 conference is organised by the Society for Learning
Analytics Research (SOLAR) and will be hosted by Simon Fraser University
(SFU), Canada's leading community-engaged research university.
Consolidating the experience from previous LAK conferences, we extend
invitations to researchers, practitioners, administrators, government and
industry professionals interested in the field of learning analytics and
related disciplines. This annual conference provides a forum to address
critical issues and challenges confronting the education sector today. The
success of LAK arises from its transdisciplinary nature which creates a
unique intersection of cutting-edge learning technologies, educational
research and practice, and data science.
Learning Analytics is defined more by its goals to better understand and
improve learning processes using data than by a particular theory or
methods. The challenges facing learning analytics require collaborations
among a broad range of disciplinary experts to create holistic solutions
generated from differing perspectives and approaches. This year LAK17 aims
to bring more discussion and focus to these transdisciplinary efforts.

revisions / reinterpretations of existing theories based on large-scale
data analysis.
---Insights into Particular Learning Processes: Studies to understand
particular aspects of a learning process based on data analysis. Examples
are inquiries that analyse traces of students’ cognition, metacognition,
affect or motivation using various forms of data.
---Modeling: Creating mathematical, statistical or computational models of
a learning process, including its actors and context.
IMPROVING LEARNING
---Feedback and Decision-Support Systems: Studies that evaluate the impact
of feedback or decision-support systems based on learning analytics
(dashboards, early-alert systems, automated messages, etc.).
---Data-Informed Efforts: Empirical evidence about the effectiveness of
learning analytics implementations or educational initiatives guided by
learning analytics.
---Personalized and Adaptive Learning: Studies that evaluate the
effectiveness and impact of (semi)automatic adaptive technologies based on
