First Preliminary Call for Papers
10th International Conference on
Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology (SIIT)
Autumn 2017
University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), Beijing, China
Standards for the convergence of technologies, services, applications and regions
=================================================================================
When the globe becomes more interconnected, by the internet, mobile applications, cloud computing, 5G and the IoT, standards are the mechanism of global interconnection. When infrastructure technologies converge to enable new fields of applications (like e-health, the smart grid or intelligent transport systems) standards represent the foundation upon which both infrastructure and applications are based. And when applications and services become increasingly international, they too incorporate scores of standards without which they simply wouldn't function in a global environment.
SIIT 2017 in Beijing China will bring together leaders from, among others, technology, economics, social science, standardization, policy and law to discuss and learn more about the impact of this global convergence on standards and standardization, and vice versa.
Since 1998, SIIT conferences aim at bringing together academia, government and industry participants engaged in standardization to foster the exchange of insights and views on all issues surrounding standards, standardization, interoperability and innovation. Contributing academic disciplines include, but are not limited to: Business Studies, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, History, Information Systems, Law, Management Studies and Sociology.
Topics
------
All types of papers are welcome that foster our understanding of interoperability, innovation and standards (e.g. theoretical, empirical, case studies). Topics include, but are certainly not limited to:
- Standards to support technical convergence
- Converging regional and international standards regimes?!
- Do regional standards still have a right to exist?
- Impact of standards (e.g. on innovation, competition, convergence)
- Standardization in developing countries
- Standardization and innovation
- Standards, intellectual property rights and antitrust law
- Open standards, open source, open innovation
- Standardization policies and regulation
- Alternative interoperability strategies
- Adoption, implementation and diffusion of standards
- Standardization management and strategies
- Standards setting processes and organizations
- Economics of standards
- Standards legitimacy
- Standards education
- History of standardization
- ...
Paper Submissions
-----------------
SIIT 2017 accepts submissions which must be original (unpublished) and follow IEEE formatting guidelines. Authors' names and affiliations should appear on a separate cover page only, which should also identify the type of the submission:
- Academic papers will frequently adopt a more theoretical approach and will inform academics as well as, ideally, practitioners.
- Industry papers address relevant topics from a more practical perspective and should also help 'ground' academic research.
- Presentation papers are intended for presentation only. They will not be published in the conference proceedings in order to allow their publication elsewhere (relevant to certain fields of science).
Papers in the above categories should not exceed 10 pages (including figures, references, etc.).
- Poster papers should not exceed 2 pages and will typically report work in progress.
All papers will undergo a double blind peer-review process. Authors may submit more than one paper, but each author will be allowed to present only one paper during the conference. At least one author of each accepted paper is required to register with the conference and present the paper. The conference organisers reserve the right to exclude a paper from inclusion in the proceedings and distribution after the conference if the paper is not presented at the conference.
The paper submission guidelines will be published in due course.
We plan to make Industry/Academic papers also available through IEEE Xplore. Their authors must comply with the IEEE policy on plagiarism including self-plagiarism; authors of papers accepted for publication will be asked to sign an IEEE Copyright Form. Outstanding papers will be considered for inclusion in the International Journal on Standardisation Research (IJSR).
Important Dates
---------------
Submissions due: April 2017
Notification of acceptance: June 2017
Final paper due: July 2017

Call for Papers
Information Systems Journal Special Issue on
Social Inclusion in the Information Systems Field
Special Issue Editors
Eileen M. Trauth (The Pennsylvania State University) - etrauth(a)ist.psu.edu
K.D. Joshi (Washington State University) - joshi(a)wsu.edu
Lynette (Kvasny) Yarger (The Pennsylvania State University) - lyarger(a)ist.psu.edu
Call: We welcome positivist, interpretive and critical empirical research that seeks greater understanding and theorizing about social inclusion in the information systems field.
Submission Deadline: September 1, 2016
Motivation:
Social inclusion research seeks to develop a greater understanding about aspects of human diversity in relation to the development, deployment, management, use and impact of information systems and technologies. Relevant aspects of human diversity include: age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, nationality, race, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. This special issue welcomes research that employs a variety of epistemologies and methodologies, and that theorizes the issues with new, indigenous or imported theories.
Information Systems Journal (ISJ) is issuing this call for a special issue in order to highlight rigorous IS research and theorizing about social inclusion in the information systems field (Trauth, 2013). The goal of this special issue is to encourage high quality research papers that will contribute to a better understanding of the causes, manifestations and impacts of social inclusion, and subsequent interventions. It is expected that authors will be familiar with the extant body of literature on social inclusion in the IS field (See, for example, the special issues noted in the References.)
Topics that might be addressed in the special issue include but are not limited to:
* Empirical studies of underrepresented groups in the IS profession
* Intersectionality and underrepresented groups - as users or as IS professionals
* Critical studies of causes and effects of exclusion on organizations and society
* Manifestations of exclusion in the IS profession and in information systems use
* Theoretically-informed interventions to increase inclusion in the IS profession
* Positivist, interpretive and critical studies of the "haves" and "have nots" in the information society
* Influence of human diversity on the design, development and deployment of information systems
* Impact of non-inclusive conceptualization of users on information systems development, deployment, management and use
Deadlines and Submission Instructions
Submissions to the special issue are due no later than September 1, 2016. Submissions for the full papers must be made to the ISJ's Manuscript Central Account: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/isj, where you should select the Special Issue as the submission type.
All manuscripts will be prescreened by the Special Issue Editors and only papers that have a reasonable chance of acceptance after two rounds of revision will enter the review process. Manuscripts that do not pass this hurdle will not be further considered for the special issue but authors may consider revising papers for submission to ISJ through the normal submission process.
Important dates for the Special Issue on Social Inclusion are:
* Submissions open: July 1, 2016
* Submission deadline: September 1, 2016
* First round decisions: December 1, 2016
* Revised manuscripts due: March 1, 2017

KEYNOTE
We are proud to announce our keynote speaker for Managed Languages & Runtimes Week '16:
Thomas Gross
(ETH Zurich, Switzerland)
http://www.lst.inf.ethz.ch/people/trg.html
Title: From Managed Languages to Guarded Programs
Date and Time: Tuesday, August 30th - h. 14.30
Abstract:
Managed languages allow the runtime system to perform dynamic checks to detect a wide range of problems. But even the combination of managed languages and static checks has not eliminated software attacks. One reason is that non-managed languages continue to be important (and will likely remain so). In this talk I'll argue that managed languages may not have gone far enough and discuss how dynamic checking based on binary translation can detect various kinds of attacks. Given the abundance of computing cycles, it appears prudent to rethink the role of the core software system and the hardware execution engine(s) in supporting reliable software.
About The Speaker:
Thomas R. Gross is a Professor of Computer Science at ETH Zurich. He joined Carnegie Mellon University in 1984 after receiving a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. In 2000, he became a Full Professor at ETH Zurich. He is interested in tools, techniques, and abstractions for software construction and has worked on many aspects of the design and implementation of software and computer systems. His current work concentrates on low-cost/low-complexity networks (in collaboration with Disney Research, Zurich), compilers, and programming parallel systems.
Thomas R. Gross has been a PI or co-PI of various research grants and contracts. Recent projects, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, include the "Datacenter Observatory", a joint EPFL-ETH Zurich-USI project to support system-level research and teaching, and a collaboration with USI on novel approaches for dynamic program analysis.
