CALL FOR PAPERS
24th European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS 2016)
Track: Advancing Theories and Theorizing in IS Research
June 12-15, 2016, Istanbul, Turkey (http://ecis2016.eu/)

Benjamin Mueller, University of Groningen, The Netherlands, b.mueller(a)rug.nl

Nils Urbach, University of Bayreuth, Germany, nils.urbach(a)uni-bayreuth.de
<mailto:nils.urbach@uni-bayreuth.de>
DESCRIPTION
The generation of knowledge can be seen as one of the key contributions of
any science. Consequently, scholars like Whetten (1989), Steinfield and Fulk
(1990), and Blalock (1969) have emphasized the centrality of theories for
any scientific endeavor a thought widely reflected in many disciplines
from natural to social sciences (Atmanspacher 2007). While this attention to
theoretical work has been at the heart of the IS discipline for a long time
(cf. Keen 1980), we believe that advanced theorizing in an increasingly
networked and global society calls for a dedicated discussion on the
evolution of existing methodological and conceptual approaches to
theorizing. Particularly the growing connection of individuals and groups
with other people and organizations forces us to pay attention to complexity
and contingencies that create opportunities and challenges for the careful
development of new theories.
Recently we have seen some of our reference disciplines turn towards
reviving their own examination of theories and theoretical work and their
role in producing high quality scholarly contributions (e.g., in management
research with contributions by Corley and Gioia 2011; Hillman 2011; Shapira
2011; Shepherd and Sutcliffe 2011; Suddaby et al. 2011; Thompson 2011; Tsang
and Ellsaesser 2011). It is this rekindled interest that leads us to suggest
that the IS discipline, too, should intensify its discussion of theory and
theorizing above and beyond such landmark papers as Gregors (2006)
influential piece on the role of theory in IS research, Urquhart et al.'s
(2010) guidelines for theory building, Webers (2012) treatment of quality
of theories and theorizing, or Straubs (2012) discussion on native IS
theories. The need for theory is being discussed, with Avison and Malaurent
(2014) calling for greater acceptance of theory light articles in
journals. This track is targeted towards picking up this debate. It provides
a platform for the discussion and development of new approaches to
theorizing as well as new methods to inform this theorizing. We also want to
engage in a differentiated discussion on the nature and role of our
theorizing in our discipline in order to advance our understanding of
Information Systems as a global gateway.
We seek submissions that are innovative, novel, and significant in terms of
advancing our disciplines ability to theorize phenomena in the global
networked society. We place particular emphasis on a submissions ability to
highlight how it helps us as a discipline to better describe, explain,
predict, and design these phenomena. The latter requires special
considerations. Following the classic work of Simon (1996), artifacts have
an inside and outside view and we encourage specific consideration of both.
In methodological contributions, we encourage potential authors to elaborate
on what in the phenomena we study can now be captured better and how and why
the method suggested is able to do that. Authors of methodological pieces
are also encouraged to carefully reflect on issues of epistemology in their
work. In theoretical pieces, we will look not only for novel ideas, but also
for a careful integration with what is known already and how and why the new
contribution advances existing nomological nets.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
Conceptual advances in theories for IS research
> New theories on Information Systems as a Global Gateway
> Significant advances or critiques of existing theories (e.g., innovative
or substantially improved construct conceptualizations or meaningful
extensions through additional constructs)
> Exploration of multi-level aspects extending existing theories
> Integration / synthesis of existing theories
> Detailed application of existing theories to inform design and action
(e.g., formal verification, design theories, as well as exploring the
interaction between technology artifact and humans)
> Reflections on theories-in-practice and what we can learn from their
application
Methodological advances in theorizing about IS phenomena
> New or advanced methods for data collection with an emphasis on what kind
of data they contribute beyond conventional methods as well as a discussion
of how and why this advances our theorizing
> New or refined methods of data analysis (i.e., theorizing, theory
building) with an emphasis on a comparison to established approaches and a
discussion of how and why they advance our theorizing
> Strategies for inductive theorizing and the building of substantive
theories grounded in an IS context
> The interplay of theory and design and how engaged forms of scholarly work
help to advance our discipline theoretically
> A constructive critique of existing methods and an identification of
impacts on and limits to current theorizing
The nature and role of theoretical contributions of IS research
> An analysis of the current state-of-the-art of the disciplines theorizing
> Reflections on what can be learned from reference disciplines
> Frameworks and typologies for theories and theoretical work in IS
Should authors of mainly methodological pieces feel unsure about whether to
submit their methods-related paper to the Theory and Theorizing Track (T01)
or the Philosophy and Methods Track (T26), please contact the track chairs
prior to submission.

Americas Conference on Information Systems
(AMCIS)
San Diego, August 11-13, 2016
http://amcis2016.aisnet.org/
Mini‐track title: Online Education: Issues and Opportunities
Track: IS in Education, IS Curriculum, Education and Teaching Cases (SIGED)
Description:
The landscape of higher education continues to evolve as an ever-growing number of institutions offer courses via fully online or blended programs. Enrollments in online programs of all types continue to grow with as many as 37% percent of all U.S college students taking at least one online course. The proportion of academic leaders who consider online learning a critical long term strategy increased from 48.8% in 2002 to 70.8% in 2014 and yet only 28% say their faculty members accept the "value and legitimacy of online education." [1]
These figures illustrate the potential of online education to broaden students’ choices for collegiate-level learning as well as and the many obstacles to its efficient and effective implementation.
We invite papers that explore the opportunities
and tackle the challenges of online education.
Empirical, theoretical, or position papers are
welcome. Topics of interests include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Online learning models and pedagogy
• Technological advancements that support online education
• Student, faculty and societal perceptions of online education
• Evaluation and assessment of student achievement in online contexts
• Best practices
• Issues and challenges, e.g., retention, plagiarism, performance evaluation, management, curriculum design accreditation, scalability, service and learning
material customization.
Important dates:
• January 4, 2016: Manuscript submissions for AMCIS 2016 begin
• March 2, 2016: AMCIS manuscript submissions closes for authors at 10:00am PST (includes Completed Research, Emergent Research Forum (ERF),
Professional Development Symposia (PDS), and Panel submissions)
• April 26, 2016: Deadline for Technology Research, Education, and Opinion (TREO) Talks submissions and ERF Proceedings

Smart Business Ecosystems
No business is an island and competition is increasingly taking place
between business networks and no longer between individual companies.
Information technology has been an important enabler with systems for
enterprise resource planning, business intelligence or business process
management. Driven by new internet-based technologies, such as cloud,
mobile, social and ubiquitous computing as well as analytics and big
data, so-called smart infrastructures are emerging. >From the business
side, they are conducive to new, more dynamic relationships between
companies, suppliers and customers, which have referred to as
ecosystems. Resources are crowdsourced as services via platforms that
yield new business knowledge and business processes. A variety of
aspects is relevant for designing and understanding smart business
ecosystems. They reach from new business models, value chains and
processes to all aspects of analytical, social and enterprise
applications and platforms as well as cyber-physical infrastructures.
The International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS) is a
well-established and respected event (ranked "B" in the CORE ranking)
bringing together international researchers to discuss the wide range of
the development, implementation and application of information systems
and technology in business. It addresses the scientific community as
well as people involved in the development of business computer
applications, consultants helping to properly implement computer
technology and applications in the industry. All of these groups are
cordially invited to submit their original work to the research track of

discusses novel and thought-provoking ideas and works-in-progress.
**** Topics ****
Possible topics for submissions include, but are not limited to, the
following:
- Theoretical, methodological and ethical approaches for Web Science
- Web practices – individual and/or collective and/or institutional
- Humanities on the Web
- The architecture and philosophy of the Web
- Web Science approaches to Data Science and the Web of Data
- Web Science and the Internet of Things
- Social machines, collective intelligence and collaborative production
- Analysis of online social and information networks
- Social Media analytics for Web Science
- Web economics, social entrepreneurship and innovation
- Web Science and Cybersecurity
- Governance, democracy, intellectual property, and the commons
- Personal data, trust, and privacy
- Web access, literacy, and development
- Knowledge, education, and scholarship on and through the Web
- Health and well-being online
- Arts and culture on the Web
- Data curation and stewardship in Web Science
- Web archiving techniques and scholarly uses of Web archives
**** Submission ****
Web Science 2015 is a very selective conference with a rigorous review
process. To accommodate the distinct traditions of its many disciplines,
we allow for three different paper submission formats: full papers,
short papers, and extended abstracts.
Full papers are 8-10 pages long, ACM double column. Full papers should
present new and substantial theoretical, empirical, methodological, or
policy-oriented contributions to research and/or practice. Full papers
include an abstract, an introduction, sections and about 30 references.
Full papers should be original work that has not been previously
published.
Short papers are 3-5 pages long, ACM double column. Short papers should
present new and substantial theoretical, empirical, methodological, or
policy-oriented contributions to research and/or practice. Short papers
should include an abstract, an introductory paragraph and about 20
references. Short papers should be original work that has not been
previously published.
Extended abstracts are ~ 2 pages long, ACM double column. Extended
abstracts present new research of broad significance for the WebSci
community. Extended abstracts include about 10 references.
Full and short papers could be assigned to any of the three presentation
modes—long talk, short talk and poster. Extended abstracts will be
assigned to the poster sessions. The final mode of presentation will be
determined by qualities of the paper like maturity of research, strength
of argument, interdisciplinary approach and impetus to spur further
work. Senior chairs may decide to recommend extended abstracts of
particular relevance to short talks.
All types of accepted submissions will be included in the proceedings,
which will be archived by the Association for Computing Machinery
Digital Library. However, to accommodate publication habits of different
scientific communities, we allow authors to opt out of having their
contribution appear in the proceedings.
We will organize a special issue of The Journal of Web Science. Authors
of selected full and short papers and extended abstracts will be
contacted and invited to submit a full-length journal paper for the
special issue. All the papers invited to this submission will go through
a peer-review process before receiving final approval.
**** IMPORTANT DATES ****

*************************** Call for Workshop Proposals
**********************
In a world increasingly connected by the Web, the divide between online
and offline is blurrier than ever. The Web serves as global newspaper,
television station, marketplace, agora, or museum. As a great deal of
social interaction moves online, the Internet promises researchers a
portal into the social life of humanity. Furthermore, the Internet
promises not only insight into, but also a full transformation of social
life.
Despite the prevalent impression of Internet saturation that may prevail
in many developed societies, the majority of humans are still offline.
New Internet users experience the Web through radically different and
diverse mobile interfaces. Although many digital prophets promised a
world where place and class would be irrelevant, the Internet has not
freed us from geography or social inequality: the “digital divide” is
alive and well, with socially-disadvantaged people often having dismal
access to the Internet.
It is thus important for scholars of the Internet to take a reasoned,
critical view of the Web. We call for discussion around the ways in
which the Web as a platform, as well as Web Science, can help address
global challenges. To this end we invite workshop proposals for the 2016
edition of the ACM WebSci conference, on topics such as, but not limited
to:
-The Web and Geography
-The Mobile Revolution and Web Science
-Web Science and Social Good
-Digital Inequalities on the Web
-The Internet in recent Middle-Eastern History
-Crime on the Web and Security
We encourage proposals on the above topics, and likewise welcome
submissions on already-established areas of focus for ACM WebSci such
as:
-Digital Humanities
-Web Architecture and Organization
-Collective Intelligence
-Social Network Analysis
-Data Ethics, Privacy and Security
-Statistics on the Web
Workshops can have a mixture of panel presentations and invited
speakers, but presentations should reflect the diversity of approaches
that characterise the multidisciplinary nature of Web Science.
### Workshop submission ###
Workshop proposals should contain the following information:
-Title summarising the tutorial goals or workshop theme.
-Name and affiliations of the organizers.
-Details of the organising/program committee, including names and
institutional affiliations and -whether they have accepted to
participate.
-Max two-page description about the relevance, motivation and goals of
the workshop, as well as pointers to past editions, if any.
-Schedule of sessions, panels, and talks, including if it is a half- or
full-day workshop.
-Names of potential invited speakers with an indication of whether they
have accepted the preliminary invitation.
-Selection criteria for papers to be presented if the workshop invites
submissions.
It is the prerogative of organisers to decide whether to have an open
call for participants and papers, or arrange panels by invitation only.
Proposals should include as many details as possible about sessions,
speakers, and talks: they will be evaluated by their coherence and
ability to address the stated goals.
It is the responsibility of the organisers to advertise their event, and
constitute a program committee to review and select papers and manage
the review process if they wish to include paper presentations in their
workshop.
If successful, we advise proposals to have a website describing the
event (within three weeks of acceptance). Workshop websites will be
linked to from the main conference site.
Proposals should be submitted in pdf format via email to
websci16ws(a)googlegroups.com.
### Publication of Workshop Submissions ###
Submissions to the proposed workshops may be included in the WebSci
proceedings, or workshop organizers may choose to not publish their
submissions. If the workshop proceedings are to be included in the
conference proceedings then the camera-ready deadline (see below) must
be adhered too.
### Workshop proposal review ###
The Web Science programme chairs will review each submission and select
those with the highest scores on originality, timeliness and relevance
of the proposed topic, its interdisciplinarity, rigour of the review
process, coherence with the conference aims, and potential to attract a
large audience.
### Workshop proposal deadlines ###
December 17, 2015 - Workshop proposal submissions
December 24, 2015 - Notification of workshop acceptance
January 14, 2016 - Workshop website due
February-March 2016 - Workshop paper submission and notification
deadlines (if applicable, details left to workshop organizers)
April 17, 2016 - Camera-ready workshop papers due (if inclusion in
conference proceedings is desired)

Notification of acceptance: December 10, 2015
Tutorials will be held on 22 May 2016 in Hannover, Germany.
WebSci is seeking proposals for tutorials about tools, techniques, and
research methodologies that allow Web Scientists to analyze and
understand phenomena on the Web. Given the interdisciplinary nature of
the WebSci community, consisting of experts in Computer Science, Social
Science and Engineering, we specifically aim for tutorials which either
introduce technical topics, methods and tools to a non-technical
audience or present social science methods and theories to a more
technical audience. Tutorials may provide, for instance, an in depth
look at an emerging technique, method or software package or a broad
summary of an important direction in the field.
The tutorial format will be entirely determined by the tutorial
organizers. We will favor tutorials embed hands-on experiences,
collaborative approaches, and interactivity above tutorials that provide
only frontal lectures. We are looking for contributions from experts
from different disciplines such as social science, computer science,
physics and economics.

scope main objective of the tutorial that will be published on the main
WebSci website.
Names, affiliations, emails, and personal websites of the tutorial
organizers. A main contact author should be specified. A typical
proposal should include no more than four co-organizers.
Duration. The tutorial duration can range between two hours to the full
day, depending on the type of activities scheduled. The Tutorial Chair
might conditionally accept a proposal and suggest a different duration
to best fit the organization of the whole event.
Tutorial schedule and activities. A description of the proposed tutorial
format, a schedule of the proposed activities (e.g., presentations,
interactive sessions) along with a *detailed* description for each of
them. The tutor(s) for each activity should be specified as well.

Track: Sustainably Digital
http://www.ecis2016.eu/files/downloads/Tracks/T31.pdf
*** Deadline for Paper Submission: November 27th, 2015 ***
TRACK DESCRIPTION
The digitization of private and professional life is both a challenge and an opportunity for supporting sustainable development, that is, "development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Our Common Future -report, UN, 1987). Sustainability can be investigated from diverse perspectives, typically focusing on environmental, economic, and social aspects.
Through digitization, information systems stand to play a pivotal role in achieving strategic sustainability objectives. First, information systems can help individuals, groups, and firms choose sustainable alternatives that reduce waste and use of energy and thus contribute to environmental and economic sustainability. Second, information systems have always aimed to contribute to economic sustainability, for instance, through generating efficiencies from management information systems, transaction processing systems, or data management systems. Third, information systems can form the global gateway to sustainability through sensor networks, business information systems, or data management, amongst others. Importantly, the three dimensions are closely intertwined, and the topic of sustainability is now typically addressed from a view of a single bounded ecosystem that includes social, political, and economic structures.
The aim of this track is to advance the discussion on the role and relevance of information systems in the context of sustainability. It intends to provide thought leaders with a forum that accounts for the breadth of sustainability research in the information systems discipline in terms of environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Potential topics range from the design of systems and digital services for sustainability to the application of existing theories on change at the individual, group, organizational, and societal levels, as well as the development of new theory.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Green information systems
- IT-enabled organizational sustainability transformation
- Use of information systems to design and implement more sustainable business processes
- Design of sustainable value chains
- Information Systems for lower carbon emissions
- Energy informatics
- The role of information systems in energy policy
- Information systems for raising environmental awareness
- Green awareness and communication for formulating organizational strategy
- Information systems for the encouragement of green choices by consumers
- Sustainable everyday life practices through information systems
- Recycling of electronic devices
- Sustainable consuming through direct access to product information
We invite rigorous and relevant empirical studies employing a wide variety of methods. We also welcome conceptual papers.
This track is supported by the Special Interest Group for Green Information Systems (SIGGreen) of the Association for Information Systems (http://siggreen.wikispaces.com).
