==================================================================
MOTIVATION
===========
The workshop follows the previous SPeL 2008, SPeL 2009, SPeL 2010, SPeL
2011, DULP & SPeL 2012 and SPeL 2013 workshops, held in conjunction with the
SAINT 2008 conference, WI/IAT 2009 conference, DEXA 2010 conference, ICWL
2011 conference, ICALT 2012 conference and ICSTCC 2013 conference

computing for web-supported learning communities.
Web-based learning is moving from centralized, institution-based systems to
a decentralized and informal creation and sharing of knowledge. Social
software (e.g., blogs, wikis, social bookmarking systems, media sharing
services) is increasingly being used for e-learning purposes, helping to
create novel learning experiences and knowledge. In the world of pervasive
Internet, learners are also evolving: the so-called "digital natives" want
to be in constant communication with their peers, they expect an
individualized instruction and a personalized learning environment, which
automatically adapt to their individual needs. The challenge in this context
is to provide intelligent and adaptive support for collaborative learning,
taking into consideration the individual differences between learners.
This workshop deals with current research on collaboration and
personalization issues in Web-supported learning communities, leading
towards the creation of a truly social and adaptive learning environment.
Its aim is to provide a forum for discussing new trends and initiatives in
this area, including research about the planning, development, application,
and evaluation of intelligent e-learning systems, where people can learn
together in a personalized way through social interaction with other
learners.

EXTENDED PAPER SUBMISSION: April 10th, 2014!
There is a lot of interest today in virtualization, with many vendors
offering virtual servers to
virtual applications and even virtual network devices. A major benefit
expected from
virtualization is dynamic scalability of Web applications based on traffic
or on clients? demand.
Web application scalability is critical to the success of many enterprises
currently involved in
doing business on the Web and in providing information that may vary
drastically from one time
to another. Maintaining sufficient resources just to meet peak requirements
can be costly.
Virtualization-based paradigms like cloud computing provide a powerful model
that allows to
simply and securely connect users to information resources on-demand and
anywhere. Modern
Web applications are increasingly hosted in a cloud-computing
infrastructure, able to
communicate and interact with external mobile devices. Such applications
should dynamically
scale in response to changes in the workload to guarantee service level
agreements. This trend
brought about a number of new modeling, design and implementation issues for
Web
applications, including
- Models to approximate non-functional properties of virtualized,
multi-tiered Web
applications, including performance, security and privacy.
- "Cloud-aware" techniques for designing and implementing virtualized Web
applications
- Toolkits and framework for cloud-based Web application monitoring and
management
- Techniques for advanced information and data handling targeted at
virtualized storage
- Models to represent and link data in virtualized environments
Solving these key issues requires both first-class theoretical research and
careful experimental
evaluation to show that model predictions are faithful to observed
application behavior. Also,
results need to be validated in the context of hybrid provisioning on
multiple, heterogeneous
virtualized platforms and cloud stacks. Finally, Web-based information
systems rely on models
and tools for representing, integrating and linking data or resources from
heterogeneous sources
or platforms. There is a need to investigate the impact of virtualization on
these models.
Springer World Wide Web Journal solicits papers presenting original research
on Large-scale
Web applications in Virtualized Environments
The goal of this special issue is to bring together current development,
ideas, and practical
results of Web application development and deployment, as it is being
transformed by
virtualization. Manuscripts are solicited to address a wide range of topics
in Web information
management in the cloud era, including - but not limited to - to the
following topics:
- Web application development on virtualized infrastructures and platform
- Web information handling on virtualized storage
- Web applications on Cloud infrastructure
- Web applications and SLA
- Data and information quality on virtualized systems
- Deep Web and the Cloud
- Information integration on heterogeneous cloud systems
- Knowledge-based systems
- Virtualized RDF data indexing and storage
- Recommender systems on the cloud
- Virtualized Systems security, privacy, and trust
- Using Social Network Analysis on the cloud
- Data management and mining in social Web
- Filtering techniques (ranking, collaborative filtering, topic detection
and tracking, etc) for social Web
- Web advertising and community analysis
- Web-based collaboration
- Web service and information management
- Virtual communities on the cloud
- Design and analysis of social or collaborative applications
- Cloud and service computing
- Cloud and mobile services

Knowledge Systems recognize the evolving nature of work and society to
being knowledge based. Competitive pressures are forcing organizations
to do more with less and to leverage all they know to succeed. Knowledge
systems are those systems developed to facilitate collaboration,
knowledge capture, storage, transfer and flow; knowledge use; as well as
to foster creativity and innovation. This track explores the many
factors that influence the development, adoption, use, and success of
knowledge systems. These factors include culture, measurement,
governance and management, storage and communication technologies,
process modeling and development. The track also looks at the societal
drivers for knowledge systems including an aging work force, the need to
distribute knowledge and encourage collaboration in widely dispersed
organizations and societies, and competitive forces requiring
organizations of all types to adapt and change rapidly. Papers are
solicited for the following minitracks: (NOTE that the last minitrack is

Dear IS colleagues,
As one of the eight journals in the “AIS Senior Scholars’ Basket of Journals”, the European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS) is considered a top journal in the IS field. EJIS provides a distinctive European perspective on the theory and practice of information systems for a global audience. The journal encourages first-rate scholarly articles by academics, but also case studies and reflective articles by practitioners. EJIS provides a critical view on IS development, implementation, strategy, management and policy.
This workshop is intended to provide guidance to IS researchers interested in publishing in top IS journals such as EJIS. It is particularly designed to assist colleagues who have not been able yet to get their work published in top outlets, but have already advanced it to a very promising state. Participants are selected on the basis of a full paper of their in-progress work.
We welcome contributions on any topic relevant to IS in general and EJIS in particular. In collaboration with ECIS 2014 Track 2: Advancing Theories and Theorizing in IS Research, we especially welcome contributions that push the boundaries in relation to IS theory and theorizing (see track description at http://ecis2014.eu/ for details, suggested topics, etc.).
Workshop date: Afternoon of June 11th, 2014 (14:00-17:00) in Tel-Aviv, immediately after ECIS 2014 concludes. Refreshments will be provided, courtesy of the EJIS Publisher, Palgrave MacMillan. Exact venue to be announced in the conference program.
Interested participants should send a paper (max 6000 words), with an abstract (max 200 words). The paper should start with a title page with full contact details of the author(s). Only completed research papers will be considered. Papers should be sent in word or pdf format to ejis.ecis2014(a)gmail.com, clearly marked as a ‘Submission to the EJIS Author Workshop' in the Subject line.
April 21, 2014: Manuscript Submission (via e-mail to ejis.ecis2014(a)gmail.com)
May 15, 2014: Notice of Acceptance
Note that participation in the workshop does NOT guarantee publication of the author’s work in EJIS or any other journal.

CALL FOR PAPERS
8TH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON APPLICATIONS OF SEMANTIC TECHNOLOGIES
(AST 2014 – http://ast2014.fzi.de)
CO-LOCATED WITH INFORMATIK 2014 – BIG DATA: DEALING WITH COMPLEXITY
STUTTGART, GERMANY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2014
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: APRIL 22, 2014
=======================================================================
----------------------------------------
AIM AND GOALS
----------------------------------------
Semantic Technologies encode meanings explicitly and independent from concrete formats and application logic. This enables machines and people likewise to understand, share, and reason over semantically represented data during retrieval and processing time. They provide an abstraction layer on top of existing ICT technologies and infrastructures aiming at the interrelation and integration of data and processes in meaningful ways. In the light of the W3C’s vision of a Web of Linked Data, Semantic Technologies are substantial constituents for the creation of data stores, the building of domain vocabularies, and the specification of data handling rules.
The application of Semantic Technologies is currently being investigated in various fields, including Ambient Intelligence, Software Engineering, Cognitive Systems, Corporate Intranets, Knowledge Management, Robotics, Bioinformatics and many more. We believe that the methods and tools provided by Semantic Technologies will play a crucial role in these and other application areas for the foreseeable future, in particular related to Big and Smart Data. A special emphasis will therefore be given to works that describe key issues and practices related to a synthesis of Semantic Technologies and Big and Smart Data.
The AST workshop will provide an open and stimulating environment that brings together researchers, practitioners and users from various fields to discuss goals, limitations, challenges, and real experiences related to the application and deployment of Semantic Technologies.
