*Introduction*
Although Business Intelligence (BI) applications have been
dominating the technology priority list of many
organizations, these efforts often fail to accomplish their
objectives. In many cases the reason for the failure is
directly attributable to the poor quality of the underlying
information. Achieving and sustaining high-levels of
information and data quality draws on knowledge and skills
across a number of disciplines such as quality management,
information technology, project management, and change
management. At the same time a typical business
intelligence initiative has to address a growing number of
data and information quality conundrums including
cross-functional information integration of data from
disparate sources, the emergence of "big data" with its
increasing volume, velocity, and variety, and the lack of
effective information quality and governance strategies and
policies.
Information quality (IQ) is a body of knowledge and practice
around realizing the maximum value from an organization's
information assets by assuring that the information products
produced from that information will meet the expectations of
("are fit for use by") the people and the system using them.
Of these information products, perhaps none are more
critical than Business intelligence (BI) applications. BI
applications must deliver the right information, in the
right format, to the right people at the right time for more
informed decision making. The quality of BI output is
directly related to the quality of the input data.
Successful information quality and governance programs are
fundamental to the success of any business intelligence
initiative, especially those at the enterprise level.
Unfortunately the information quality and governance
capabilities in many organizations are not up to the levels
needed to support their BI applications. Therefore, the goal
of this book is to provide a collection of research papers
and case studies that provide a road map to the best
practices for information quality and governance to support
business intelligence applications.
*Objective of the Book*
The mission of this book is to advance research and practice
in the field of business intelligence and information
quality. The book is a peer-reviewed publication dedicated
to the exchange of the latest academic research on all
aspects of practicing and managing information quality and
governance for business intelligence in organizations. The
book will publish original research and case studies by
academic, business, and government contributors on
strategies, practices, techniques, and technologies that
advance the understanding and practice of information
quality in support of business intelligence. This book takes
a multidisciplinary approach to the examination of
information quality for business intelligence.
*Target Audience*
The prospective audience of the book can be:
·Researchers interested in business intelligence and
data/information quality;
·Business intelligence and information quality
practitioners; and
·University students specialising in business intelligence,
information quality or information systems.
*Recommended topics*

*IADIS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE MOBILE LEARNING 2013*
Lisbon, Portugal, 14 to 16 March 2013
(http://www.mlearning-conf.org/
** Conference background and goals*
*Free as Birds Learning in the Cloud*
Mobile learning is concerned with a society on the move. In
particular, with the study of “…how the mobility of learners
augmented by personal and public technology can contribute
to the process of gaining new knowledge, skills and
experience” (Sharples et al. 2007).
A growing understanding of the learning and instructional
affordances of mobile technologies (alongside technological
developments), have enabled the design and investigation of
mobile learning experiences across contexts and dimensions
of mobile learning. For instance, the literature in the
field is rich in studies which investigate how learners move
physical locations, utilising several devices/technologies,
interacting with various social networks (perhaps across
formal and informal learning settings), as they pursuit a
learning path or event.
There is much appreciation of learning principles, such as
contextual, situated, augmented and collaborative among
others, particularly suited to mobile learning. There is a
well of studies reporting on how these principles can be
best applied in the field. There are also always new
technologies being implemented in the context of mobile
learning for example, ‘smarter’ phones, e-readers, tablet
and augmented reality applications. However, the evaluation
of mobile learning is an area that has lagged behind.
The mobile nature of mobile learners and the application of
traditional evaluation strategies and tools, have often
limited the scope of investigation to what can be observed
by researchers or captured by external recording devices
(such as video or sound). Thus, a challenge remains to
understand what happens while learners are on the move.
The advent of cloud computing and learning analytics offer
potential for exploring innovative mobile learning
experiences and alternative evaluation strategies which may
in turn, shade light into what learning happens in the move.
The IADIS Mobile Learning 2013 International Conference
seeks to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion
of mobile learning research which illustrate developments in
the field.
** Format of the Conference *
The conference will comprise of invited talks and oral
presentations. The proceedings of the conference will be
published in the form of a book and CD-ROM with ISBN, and
will be available also in the IADIS Digital Library

*************************************************************
** Keynote Speaker (confirmed):*
Professor Richard Vidgen, Professor of Systems Thinking,
Department of Management Systems, Hull University Business
School, UK
** Conference background and goals *
A new paradigm is sweeping the society, organisations and
the business environment. In fact, society and business
world alike are moving from its tangible bases to intangible
ones based on knowledge and information systems (IS) to
support its management, use and sharing. In this emerging
paradigm, terms like information, communication, knowledge,
and learning have acquired a critical relevance to the
understanding of the nature of contemporary business. This
led authors such as Drucker (1993) to state that “we are
entering the knowledge society in which the basic economic
resource… is knowledge”.
In fact, since the mid-1980s, there has been a sudden
avalanche of a new kind of vocabulary. Corporations, which
so far had been economic entities, are being described as
‘information-based organizations’, ‘learning organizations’,
‘knowledge-creating companies’ or knowledge intensive
organisations. Instead of product-market strategies, the
fashionable business discourse invokes core competencies,
intangible assets, knowledge-based capabilities,
intellectual capital, knowledge management etc.
Consequently, in this 21st century of ours, terms such as
intellectual capital, knowledge management, and knowledge
mapping have increasingly become part of the corporate
landscape.
However, none of this apparent revolution would be possible
without the underlying technological support provided by IS.
The IADIS Information Systems Conference (IS 2013) aims to
provide a forum for the discussion of IS taking a
socio-technological perspective. It aims to address the
issues related to design, development and use of IS in
organisations from a socio-technological perspective, as
well as to discuss IS professional practice, research and
teaching.
** Format of the Conference *
The conference will comprise invited talks and oral
presentations. The proceedings of the conference will be
published in the form of a book. The best paper authors will
be invited to publish extended versions of their papers in
specific journals, and in the IADIS International Journal on
Computer Science and Information Systems.

Subject: [AISWorld] IT Artefact & practice theorizing –
pragmatic perspectives (Sysiac Special Issue)
Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2012 09:14:36 +0000

*IT Artefact & practice theorizing ? pragmatic perspectives***
*/Last Call for papers to a Special Issue in Systems, Signs
& Actions/*
*Theme***
There is a growing recognition among information systems
scholars that IT artefacts should not be black-boxed as mere
technical objects (Orlikowski & Iacono, 2001). IT
artefactsare instruments for work and communication embedded
in their social context. The social, organisational and
linguistic characteristics of IT artefacts should be
acknowledged as well as their technical and material nature.
In their seminal article, Orlikowski & Iacono (2001) raised
a call for theorizing the IT artefact. They outlined
alternative views of the IT artefact and proposed an
ensemble view. As responses to their call, several views of
the IT artefact have been presented (e.g. Ågerfalk, 2003;
Sein & Harindranath, 2004; Alter, 2006; Markus & Silver,
2008; Matook & Brown, 2008; Sjöström, 2010; Strong &
Volkoff, 2010).
An improved understanding of IT artefacts is needed in
relation to their design, use and evolution. The importance
of IT artefact theorizing for design is shown by Sein et al
(2011). They build their method for Action Design Research
explicitly on the ensemble view from Orlikowski & Iacono
(2001). An improved understanding of the context of IT
artefacts is needed as well. There is a growing interest to
theorize the context as practices (Feldman & Orlikowski,
2011; Goldkuhl, 2011) or work-systems (Alter, 2006). This
includes an interest in the combined social and material
characteristics of such practices (Orlikowski & Scott,
2008). The orientation of practice theorizing in IS follows
a general ?practice turn? in social science (e.g. Schatzki
et al, 2001; Reckwitz, 2002; Whittington, 2006; Miettinen et
al, 2009; Gherardi, 2009).
The claims for theorizing IT artefacts as socially embedded
instruments for work and communication and for theorizing
the artefact?s context as practices can be seen as elements
of a pragmatic re-orientation in IS. Statements for such a
pragmatic re-orientation can be found in Goles & Hirschheim
(2000), Baskerville & Myers (2004), Ågerfalk (2010) and
Goldkuhl (2012).
This special issue is based on the International workshop on
IT Artefact Design & Workpractice Intervention
(www.vits.org/?pageId=381 <http://www.vits.org/?pageId=381>)
held in Barcelona on June 10, 2012. Papers from this
workshop as well as other papers that address the theme of
this special issue are welcome. Inquiries and submissions
should be sent to the editors of this special issue.
