What is the Doctoral Consortium?
**************************
The Doctoral Consortium is a workshop for Ph.D. students from all over the
world who are in the early phases of their dissertation work (i.e., in their
first or second year). The goal of the Doctoral Consortium is to help
students with their thesis and research plans by providing feedback and
general advice on using the research environment in a constructive and
international atmosphere. The Doctoral Consortium provides PhD students with
the opportunity to meet and discuss with experts in their area. Students
will present and discuss their thesis in the context of a well-known and
established international conference outside of their usual university
environment.
Up to 10 Ph.D. students will have the opportunity to participate. Students
will be required to pay the registration fees of the ICALT Conference
(student rates).
The Doctoral Consortium will consist of 3 sessions. The first session aims
at giving students the chance to present their work to others and get
familiar with the work of other PhD students in their area. Each PhD student
will give a very brief presentation (about 3 minutes) about his/her work
with focus on motivation and research problem. These presentations are
followed by a poster exhibition where individual discussion about each
student?s work will take place. The third session aims at giving students
feedback from an expert in their area and letting them discuss their work
with him/her as well as with few other PhD students doing research in the
respective area.
After the notification of acceptance/rejection, each PhD student with an
accepted paper will be assigned to a small group consisting of 3-4 PhD
students and one expert in their area. Each group will start to communicate
and exchange their papers so that all members of the group are familiar with
the papers of each group member. During the third session, each small group
will meet individually and further discussions of the works will take place
with the expert in the respective research field and other PhD students.

Call For Papers
13th International Workshop on
Agent-Oriented Software Engineering
AOSE 2012
Held with AAMAS 2012, Valencia, Spain, June 4, 2012
http://winf.in.tu-clausthal.de/events/aose12
MOTIVATION
Since the early 1990s, multi-agent system researchers have developed a
large body of knowledge on the foundations and engineering principles
for designing and developing agent-based systems. The 12 past editions
of the agent-oriented software engineering workshop (AOSE) had a key
role in this endeavor. For 2012, the workshop organizers and the
steering committee propose to organize an edition of AOSE workshop
aimed at exploring the new emerging role of agent-oriented software
engineering as a bridge from the now consolidated agent oriented
programming languages and platforms, to recent systems modelling
paradigms like self-*, autonomic systems, and systems of systems (SoS).
Thus, it is our hope to explore from an agent-based perspective,
foundations, models, methods, architectures, and tools for
engineering future software-intensive IT eco-systems.
The workshop organizers plan to publish accepted papers on a USB stick
as part of the AAMAS workshop registration package.
Revised post-proceedings papers will later be published in
a volume of the Lecture Notes for Computer Science series.
GOALS and TOPICS
The general goal of this year workshop is twofold: The first goal is to
study the role of agent-oriented software engineering in the design
phase of agents development. It is well known and accepted that agents -
from the software engineering perspective - are of particular interest
as an analysis abstraction. This has been true for several years but the
most recent advancements in agent-oriented programming languages have
proposed new challenges: software engineers may now design and code
their solutions in terms of agents. The old need of moving to the
object-oriented level of abstraction is overpassed and the new
developing platforms allow for a more natural transformation of AO
analysis models into AO design models. This reality has been soon
perceived by researcher and practitioners. An example of this new trend
may be found in the refreshed interest about testing of agents.
The second goal concerns the other side of the proposed ideal bridge:
the needs of new design approaches specifically suited for facing the
needs of self-organizing systems, autonomic systems and systems of
systems. In the last years we have seen considerable research efforts on
these topics; however, only few of them have their scope and foundations
in the software engineering field.
Novel efforts are necessary to cope with these new challenges in order
to find specific solutions that could bring such systems from research
to industrialization. In this context, a means for bridging the above
mentioned research (and application) streams may come from the advances
on organizations, norms, and institutions. Are they mature enough for
being applied to stable agent-oriented languages and for contributing to
the engineering of self-organizing and autonomic systems? The proposed
aim is find an answer to this question or to propose further hints for
future investigations on the application of organizations, norms and
institutions to the design of agent-oriented systems.
Topics of regular papers include but are not restricted to:
* Agent-based concepts for systems of systems engineering
* Agent-based solutions for managing complexity in software engineering
* Agents and model-driven approaches
* Agents and services
* Agents for self-adaptive systems
* Alignment of agents with service-oriented software development
* Autonomy vs. dependability and robustness
* CASE tools to support agent-oriented software development in practice
* Coordination infrastructures for multi-agent systems
* Engineering multi-agent organizations
* Engineering self-organizing systems
* Goal-oriented design
* Implications of introducing agent-based solutions on the development
organization
* Integration of agents with legacy systems
* Middleware integration of agent-based software
* Multi-agent based simulation
* Programming agents and multi-agent systems
* Qualities and tradeoffs of agent-based architectures
* Reusable design knowledge: patterns and reference architectures
* Social engineering
* Software architectures for multi-agent systems
* Standardization efforts for multi-agent systems
* Testing of agent-based software
* Validation of agent technology in practice
* Verification of agent-based software
AUTHOR GUIDELINES
AOSE welcomes the submission of theoretical, experimental,
methodological as well as application papers with a clear research focus
on the topics outlined above. Each paper will be evaluated by three
members of the PC. Papers that present a valuable idea that needs
further development can be accepted as a short paper.
SUBMISSIONS
Papers should be between 10 and 12 pages, including the text, figures,
and references. The submissions must be formatted according to the
Springer Verlag LNCS style. PDF format is required. Papers can be
submitted via EasyChair 'AOSE2012',
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=aose2012
The good receipt of your submission will be confirmed by email.

** Conference background and goals*
Mobile Learning where to next? Accelerometers and motion
sensors will tell
Since the advent of mobile learning, developments in its
practice and research have been triggered by technological
innovation and advancement. For instance the arrival of
laptops, afforded new models of technology integration and
accessibility within the classroom and freed technology from
the ‘imprisonment’ of computer rooms. The appearance of
handheld devices offered potential for the exploitation of
contextual outdoor learning and freed learners and
technologies from the confinement of classrooms. The
emergence of mobile phones democratized access to
technology, revolutionized the concept of user generated
content and freed learners and technologies to experiment
with technologies outside classrooms and schools.
The incursion of multi-touch tablets in the mobile learning
scene is the latest technological ‘wave’. Though in early
stages, sensationalist reporting of the ipads /for /Learning

initiatives already advocate ipads will displace playdough

Against this background the relevance and need for mobile
learning research and practice founded upon learning
theories, focused on pedagogically meaningful approaches to
mobile learning and systematically evaluated with
appropriate data collection and analysis tools, remains
paramount.

AMCIS 2012 Call for Papers
Minitrack: Information Technology in Transition Economies
Track: ICTs in Global Development (sponsored by SIGGlobDev)
August 9-12, 2012, Seattle, Washington
http://amcis2012.aisnet.org/
A considerable body of literature exists regarding the adoption of ICT in developed economies. However, different challenges exist for emerging and transition economies that warrant a dedicated line of research. Emerging economies are those of countries with low to middle per capita income that are actively dedicated to economic development and substantial reforms in order to advance from the developing to the developed status. Transition economies are the particular case of the countries of the former eastern bloc and the countries that resulted from the breakup of the Soviet Bloc, which within the last two decades have abandoned communist style central planning systems for free markets [1]. The fast growing transition economies play an increasingly important role in the global economy, with information technology (IT) being a crucial driving force in this process. The objective of this mini-track is to encourage more research in this topic by providing a forum for intereste
d authors to disseminate their research, compare results, and exchange ideas. Possible topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- IT management issues that are unique in some ways to transition economies, such as national computerization policies and the role of transnational corporations, regional and international cooperation and self-sufficiency in IT
- Cultural, economical and social contexts/factors influencing IT management in transition economies
- Social awareness of computers and computer literacy, including culturally adapted IT in transition economies
- IT investment evaluation in transition economies
- Cost/Benefit analysis of IT in transition economies
- IT productivity studies at the country, industry or firm level, with specific reference to the social and business conditions prevalent in transition economies
- Assessment of IT success in transition economies
- Comparative cross-country research, comparing IT in transition (or emerging) and developed economies
- Country specific case studies, with specific reference to the social and business conditions prevalent in transition economies
- Global supply chain management and its contribution to transition economies
- IT off-shoring/outsourcing into transition economies
- International IT project management, with specific reference to the social and business conditions in transition economies
- E-commerce effect on transition economies
- E-government and e-democracy in transition economies
- Digital divide in transition economies
- Studies on IT/IS adoption and use at the country, industry or firm level in transition economies
- Motivations and justifications for IT adoption in transition economies
- Risk factors, barriers and impediments to IT adoption in transition economies
- Critical success/failure factors for IT adoption in transition economies
- IT governance in transition economies
- IT Service Management (ITSM) in transition economies

Subject: [AISWorld] First CFP: HWID2012 working conference
on “Work Analysis and HCI”
Date: Mon, 2 Jan 2012 14:53:54 +0100
From: Jacob Nørbjerg <jno.itm(a)cbs.dk>
To: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
First Call for Papers:
HWID2012 working conference on ?Work Analysis and HCI?
HWID Conference Website: <to come>
Hosted by Copenhagen Business School
Venue: Copenhagen Business School (CBS), Solbjerg Plads 3,
DK-2000 Frederiksberg, Denmark
Wednesday and Thursday, 5 ? 6 December 2012, in Copenhagen,
Denmark
Deadline for submissions: August 1st, 2012.
=========================================================
Theme, Scope and Focus:
The HUMAN WORK INTERACTION DESIGN 2012 (HWID 2012) working
conference analyzes the combination of empirical Work
Analysis and Human computer interaction (HCI).
Human work analysis involves user goals, user requirements,
tasks and procedures, human factors, cognitive and physical
processes, contexts (organizational, social, cultural). In
particular in the HCI and human factors tradition, work is
analyzed as end-user tasks performed within a work domain.
The focus is on the user?s experience of tasks (procedures)
and the artefact environment (constraints in the work
domain). Hierarchical Task Analysis (Annett & Duncan, 1967)
and Work Domain Analysis (Salmon, Jenkins, Stanton, &
Walker, 2010) are among the methods that can be used to
analyse the goal-directed tasks, and map the work
environmental constraints and opportunities for behavior. In
addition, there is a strong tradition in HCI for studying
work with ethnographic methods (Button & Sharrock, 2009) and
from socio-technical perspectives (e.g., Nocera, Dunckley, &
Sharp, 2007). These approaches focus on work as end-user
actions performed together with other people in a field
setting, that is, the user?s experience of using systems are
social and organizational experiences. User experience,
usability and interaction design are influenced by these
approaches and techniques for analyzing and interpreting the
human work, which eventually manifests in the design of
technological products, systems and applications.
The working conference will present current research of
human work interaction design and industrial experiences in
a wide spectrum of domains such as medical, safety critical
systems, e-government, enterprise IT solutions, learning
systems, information systems for rural populations, etc. The
relevant domains not mentioned here could also be considered.
The purpose of the working conference is to enable
practitioners and researchers to analyze the relation
between empirical work analysis and HCI/user experience.
After the conference, a limited number of selected papers
will be published in an IFIP Springer book. We expect the
participants will be people from industry and academia with
an interest on empirical work analysis, HCI, interaction
design and usability and user experience in work situations
and at the workplace. The working conference will be
conducted in a good social atmosphere that invites to
openness and provides time to reflection and discussion
about each of the accepted papers and cases.
We are interested in submissions that discuss the before
mentioned aspects of work analysis and how the results of
these manifests in the design of technological products,
systems and applications. Also, today generic designs are
applied to use-situations with very different purposes, as
using the same social software or game for work and leisure
situations. Thus, design shifts from design of a technology
to design of various use-situations encompassing the same
technological design, and we find that there is a need to
discuss the relations between work analysis and design in
both situations.
The topics include, but are not limited to:
* Techniques and methods for mapping the relations between
work analysis and interaction design
* Translating (Cognitive) Work Analysis to Interaction Design
* How work analysis can feed HCI testing and evaluation
* Work analysis and HCI in medical and safety critical ICT
* Work analysis and HCI in business contexts
* Work analysis and HCI in enterprise-level systems
* Work analysis and HCI in e-government services
* Work analysis and HCI in Mobile Devices
* User experience in work situations and at the workplace
* Design cases bridging the gap between work analysis and
interaction design
* Socio-technical theory and HCI combined
* Work analysis and HCI in cultural contexts
* The concept of Work Analysis (Enid Mumford, Tavistock,
?work style?, HCI work analysis, cognitive work
analysis, more)
* Theory for relating interaction design and work analysis
* Synergies between work analysis and model-driven
interface development
* Evolution of interface models in accordance to evolving
human activity systems
* Impact of emerging interaction technologies in human
work practice
Submission guidelines:
We invite two types of papers:
* Full research papers (10 pages)
* Industry ? case studies & work in progress (4 pages)
For submissions to the working conference, the authors must
use the LNCS templates and style files available from
http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-7-72376-
0#anchor10. Download paper template with format
specifications: typeinst.doc. All papers should be in the
working conference publication format and sent as both pdf
and MS Word files to tc.itm(a)cbs.dk
<mailto:tc.itm@cbs.dk> anddinesh(a)cdac.in
<mailto:dinesh@cdac.in> by August 1st 2012. An IFIP Springer
copyright form must be filled in for each paper. They can be
downloaded from http://www.springer.com/series/6102.
Acceptance notification for conference papers:
Notification of acceptance will be provided by 1st October
2012. All accepted papers will be published in the working
conference proceedings in the form of an electronic copy
with ISBN and made available to the participants.
Selection of Papers for IFIP Springer Book:
During the review process, the reviewers are asked to
evaluate (also among papers from industry and students)
whether the paper is suitable for an IFIP Springer book. We
aim at most accepted full research papers to be included
here, but also the possibility to have a very interesting
perspective from industry or similar represented. This IFIP
Springer book will be available after the conference. In
addition, four to five papers will be selected for further
development for a special issue in the International Journal
of Socio-technology and Knowledge Development.

Subject: [AISWorld] AMCIS 2012 CFP: Minitrack on
Intersectionality of Identities in Information Technology
Usage, Participation, and Behavior
Date: Mon, 2 Jan 2012 12:00:19 -0500
From: A.J. Morgan <ajmorgan.hu(a)gmail.com>

Announcing a Call for Papers for AMCIS 2012 Minitrack on
Intersectionality of Identities in Information Technology
Usage, Participation, and Behavior
Track: Social Issues and Social Inclusion Track
Description:
With the full integration of technology into many aspects of
daily life- personal, professional, and social- it is of
importance to evaluate the usefulness of this technology
from a multitude of perspectives. Increased focus on factors
such as globalization, innovation, and diversity are
escalating the need for these valuable perspectives.
Therefore, it is important to not only investigate how
technology is being used, but to understand more deeply who
the users of the technology are. In an effort to do so,
studies of IT users, workers, and behaviors must expand
their examination beyond single-category analyses. Rather
than looking at human differences through a single lens
(such as race or gender alone), utilizing an intersectional
perspective of multiple identities may uncover meaningful
realizations about those interacting with technology.
Intersectionality, in this context, reflects the position
that the experiences of an individual are influenced by a
myriad of factors including race, gender, age,
socio-economic status, sexuality, geographic location, and
education level, among others. These factors may interact in
ways which provide a person with added opportunities or
obstacles in their interaction with technology.
The notion of intersectionality of individuals with respect
to IT is a developing research area which examines the
complexity of how individual differences may interplay and
interact. Studies on the topic have noted that the use of
this perspective is critical understanding the ability to
attract and retain minority talent in the IT workforce
(Yakura, 2006; Kvasny, 2003); Kvasny et al., 2009; Trauth et
al., 2008, Gurrier et al., 2009), the experiences of users
of health-care IT systems (Warren, 2010; Morgan, 2009), and
political participation (Lettis, 2006). In particular, the
use of intersectional analyses will help to further the
discourse around social inclusion and Information technology
by developing an added breadth of knowledge around
technology users.
This track invites papers that focus on the intersection of
identity characteristics and/or human differences with
respect to the use of, participation in, or behavior with
information technology. I am interested in including papers
that are both conceptually and empirically based.
Suggested Topics:
The topics of interest include but are not limited to the
following:
? The influence of the intersection of race, gender, and
culture on adoption and use of information and communication
technologies (ICT)
? Analysis of the digital divide from a multilayered
demographic perspective
? Demographic analyses of Information Technology workers
and/or the underrepresentation of minority groups in
technical work
? The role of intersectionality in health?care IT use and
behavior
? How human differences improve or affect the use of or
participation with ICT among socially inclusive communities
? The role of multiple user characteristics in information
searching, retrieval, or human information behavior
? The analysis of multiple identities in cyberspace or
social networking communities
? Use of technology for health, education and economic
development for greater social inclusion of individuals
and/or organizations
