Hello Gustaf,
I have something else to share with you about the development of services that the IEEE Education Society will provide to our members. It's a conference in India. I hope to meet many IEEE Education Society members who attend.
I want to develop an annual conference in India that focuses on the mission of the IEEE Education Society. I want that conference to be accessible and inexpensive. I have been very fortunate to have enlisted several leaders in IEEE India leaders are leading this effort. The leaders of the IEEE Kerala Section and the IEEE India Council are supporting this effort. Now I can just get out of their way and move onto the next item (note: aside from staying married while holding the office of president).
Gustaf, hopefully this conference can be held simultaneously in several venues throughout India thus easing the cost and logistics of travel. We also hope to have speakers attend this event via teleconference from outside India. This first conference will be excellent and will also be a starting point; from there we will build and evolve this terrific conference.

Subject: [computational.science] ScalA@SC 2011: Call for
Papers
Date: Fri, 12 Aug 2011 16:44:17 -0400
From: Christian Engelmann <engelmannc(a)computer.org>
Organization: "ICCSA"
To: Computational Science Mailing List
<computational.science(a)lists.iccsa.org>
We apologize if you receive multiple copies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2nd Workshop on Latest Advances in Scalable Algorithms
for Large-Scale Systems (ScalA)
held in conjunction with the
24th IEEE/ACM International Conference on High Performance
Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC) 2011
November 14, 2011, Seattle, WA, USA
<http://www.csm.ornl.gov/srt/conferences/Scala/2011/>
Novel scalable scientific algorithms are needed in order to enable key
science applications to exploit the computational power of large-scale
systems. This is especially true for the current tier of leading
petascale machines and the road to exascale computing as HPC systems
continue to scale up in compute node and processor core count. These
extreme-scale systems require novel scientific algorithms to hide
network and memory latency, have very high computation/communication
overlap, have minimal communication, and have no synchronization points.
Scientific algorithms for multi-petaflop and exa-flop systems also need
to be fault tolerant and fault resilient, since the probability of
faults increases with scale. Resilience at the system software and at
the algorithmic level is needed as a crosscutting effort. Finally, with
the advent of heterogeneous compute nodes that employ standard
processors as well as GPGPUs, scientific algorithms need to match these
architectures to extract the most performance. This includes different
system-specific levels of parallelism as well as co-scheduling of
computation. Scientific key science applications require novel
mathematical models and system software that address the scalability and
resilience challenges of current- and future-generation extreme-scale
HPC systems.
Submission Guidelines
Authors are invited to submit manuscripts in English structured as
technical papers not exceeding 8 letter size (8.5x11) pages including
figures, tables and references using the IEEE format for conference
proceedings. Submissions not conforming to these guidelines may be
returned without review. Reference style files are available at
<http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/pubservices/confpub/AuthorTools/confer….>
All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on correctness, originality,
technical strength, and significance, quality of presentation, and
interest and relevance to the workshop attendees. Submitted papers must
represent original unpublished research that is not currently under
review for any other conference or journal. Papers not following these
guidelines will be rejected without review and further action may be
taken, including (but not limited to) notifications sent to the heads of
the institutions of the authors and sponsors of the conference.
Submissions received after the due date, exceeding length limit, or not
appropriately structured may also not be considered. At least one author
of an accepted paper must register for and attend the workshop. Authors
may contact the workshop program chair for more information. Papers
should be submitted electronically at:
<http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=scala2011.>
Important Dates:
Full paper submission: 12 September, 2011
Notification of acceptance: 17 October, 2011
Camera-ready submission: 7 November, 2011
Early registration: 17 October, 2011
Late registration: 13 November, 2011
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Novel scientific algorithms that improve performance,
scalability, resilience and power efficiency
- Porting scientific algorithms and applications to
many-core and heterogeneous architectures
- Performance and resilience limitations of scientific
algorithms and applications at scale
- Crosscutting approaches (system software and
applications) in addressing scalability challenges

"Cloud Computing& You"
3rd Cloud Computing International Conference (CloudViews 2011)
October 17-18, 2011
Porto, Portugal
EuroCloud Portugal
2011.cloudviews.org
General Chair: Inês Dutra, University of Porto, ines(a)dcc.fc.up.pt
Recognizing the potential of the Cloud Computing paradigm for ICT evolution, the CloudViews.Org project was launched in the end of 2007. Initially created by independent entrepreneurs, researchers and technical staff of the Porto Polytechnic Institute, CloudViews.Org aimed at promoting and discussing technologies related with Cloud Computing. Following the CloudViews.Org spirit, the EuroCloud Portugal Association (www.eurocloud.pt), a non profit organization, was created in January 2010.
The CloudViews project has already organized two international conferences on Cloud Computing. "To Cloud or not to Cloud" was the main theme of the first edition, held in Porto, Portugal, in 2009. "Cloud Ecosystem" was the theme of CloudViews 2010, which was also held in Porto, Portugal with the help of the Eurocloud Association. In that edition, academia, business people and decision makers gathered together to present their views, which motivated a lively debate where all ICT players were challenged to think about how to achieve a true Cloud Ecosystem.
CloudViews 2011, in its third edition, moves a step forward by defying academia, business people and decision makers to think about their relationship with the clouds. "Cloud Computing& You", the main theme of the third edition of CloudViews has as its main goal to raise awareness and analyse the impact of Cloud Computing on small and medium business (SME), as well as on individual users.
Around the theme "Cloud Computing& You", CloudViews 2011 welcomes contributions from several fields related to cloud computing, including, but not limited to, scientific computing applications, performance evaluation and resource management, predictability and provision platforms, storage clouds architectures and implementations, cloud computing security: models and frameworks, cloud interoperability, scheduling mechanisms, elastic platforms, service level agreements, fault tolerant architectures and implementations, human factors in computing systems, cloud usability, and business models in the cloud.
Submissions of full (8 pages maximum) and short papers (4 pages maximum) must conform to 2 columns IEEE style, in PDF format and offer new, unpublished, original contributions. All contributions must be written in English and submitted electronically through the CV2011 Easy Chair conference system at http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=cloudviews2011.
Reviews will be double-blinded. Prepare your paper without any authors names or affiliations and avoid explicit self-references such as "in a previous work, we [ref]...". Give preference to sentences like: "in a previous work, Smith et al [ref]...". Also avoid the inclusion of acknowledgements and references to funding agencies in your submission version.

PAPER ONE
Preventative Actions for Enhancing Online Protection and Privacy
Steven Furnell, University of Plymouth, UK
Rossouw von Solms, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, South Africa
Andy Phippen, University of Plymouth, UK
Many citizens rely upon online services, and it is certain that this
reliance will increase in the future. However, they frequently lack a
solid appreciation of the related safety and security issues, and can be
missing out on an essential aspect of awareness in everyday life. Indeed,
users are often concerned about online threats, but it would be stretching
the point to claim that they are fully aware of the problems. Thus, rather
than actually protecting themselves, many will simply accept that they are
taking a risk. This paper examines the problem of establishing end-user
eSafety awareness, and proposes means by which related issues can be
investigated and addressed. Recognising that long-term attitudes and
practices will be shaped by early experiences with the technology, it is
particularly important to address the issue early and improve awareness
amongst young people. However, the problem is unlikely to be addressed via
the approaches that would traditionally be applied with adult users. As
such, the paper examines information gathering and awareness-raising
strategies drawing from qualitative methodologies in the social sciences,
whose pluralistic approach can be effectively applied within school
contexts.

PAPER TWO
Minimising Collateral Damage: Privacy-Preserving Investigative Data
Acquisition Platform
Zbigniew Kwecka, Edinburgh Napier University, UK
William J. Buchanan, Edinburgh Napier University, UK
Investigators often define invasion of privacy as collateral damage.
Inquiries that require gathering data from third parties, such as banks,
Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or employers are likely to impact the
relationship between the data subject and the data controller. In this
research a novel privacy-preserving approach to mitigate collateral damage
during the acquisition process is presented. This approach is based on
existing Private Information Retrieval (PIR) protocols, which cannot be
employed in an investigative context. This paper provides analysis of the
investigative data acquisition process and proposes three modifications
that can enable existing PIR protocols to perform investigative enquiries
on large databases, including communication traffic databases maintained
by ISPs. IDAP is an efficient Symmetric PIR (SPIR) protocol optimised for
the purpose of facilitating public authorities? enquiries for evidence. It
introduces a semi-trusted proxy into the PIR process in order to gain the
acceptance of the general public. In addition, the dilution factor is
defined as the level of anonymity required in a given investigation. This
factor allows investigators to restrict the number of records processed,
and therefore, minimise the processing time, while maintaining an
appropriate level of privacy.

PAPER THREE
A Cross Layer Spoofing Detection Mechanism for Multimedia Communication
Services
Nikos Vrakas, University of Piraeus, Greece
Costas Lambrinoudakis, University of Piraeus, Greece
The convergence of different network types under the same architecture
offers the opportunity for low cost multimedia services. The main
objective has been the high quality of the provided services. However,
considering that older equipment with limited processing capabilities may
be present in such environments, a tradeoff between security and service
quality is inevitable. Specifically, low resource enabled devices cannot
utilize state of the art security mechanisms, such as IPSec tunnels,
integrity mechanisms, etc., and they simply employ HTTP Digest
authentication. The lack of integrity mechanisms in particular raises many
security concerns for the IMS infrastructures. Attacks such as Man in the
Middle (MitM), spoofing, masquerading, and replay that can be launched in
IMS environments, have been pinpointed in bibliography by various
researchers. Moreover, an internal attacker may utilize his legitimate
security tunnels in order to launch spoofing and identity theft attacks.
This paper presents a cross-layer spoofing detection mechanism that
protects SIP-based infrastructures from the majority of the aforementioned
attacks without requiring an additional cryptographic scheme which would
inevitably introduce considerable overheads.

PAPER FOUR
Cryptographic Approaches for Privacy Preservation in Location-Based
Services: A Survey
Emmanouil Magkos, Ionian University, Greece
Current research in location-based services (LBSs) highlights the
importance of cryptographic primitives in privacy preservation for LBSs,
and presents solutions that attempt to support the (apparently) mutually
exclusive requirements for access control and context privacy (i.e.,
identity and/or location), while at the same time adopting more
conservative assumptions in order to reduce or completely remove the need
for trust on system entities (e.g., the LBS provider, the network
operator, or other peer nodes). This paper surveys the current state of
knowledge concerning the use of cryptographic primitives for
privacy-preservation in LBS applications.

PAPER FIVE
Deploying Privacy Improved RBAC in Web Information Systems
Ioannis Mavridis, University of Macedonia, Greece
Access control technology holds a central role in achieving trustworthy
management of personally identifiable information in modern information
systems. In this article, a privacy-sensitive model that extends
Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) to provide privacy protection through
fine-grained and just-in-time access control in Web information systems is
proposed. Moreover, easy and effective mapping of corresponding components
is recognized as an important factor for succeeding in matching security
and privacy objectives. Such a process is proposed to be accomplished by
capturing and modeling privacy requirements in the early stages of
information system development. Therefore, a methodology for deploying the
mechanisms of an access control system conforming to the proposed Privacy
Improved Role-Based Access Control (PIRBAC) model is presented. To
illustrate the application of the proposed methodology, an application
example in the healthcare domain is described.

International Journal of Information Technologies and the Systems Approach
(IJITSA)
Guest Editors:
Dr. José-Rodrigo Córdoba Pachón, Royal Holloway, University of London
Dr. Jorge Marx-Gomez, University of Oldenburg, Germany
INTRODUCTION:
Economic recession, global environmental concerns and availability of
mobile technologies among other factors have contributed to the emergence
of alternative computing infrastructures, products and service that
promise individuals and organizations cleaner and more responsible
information processing. A scheme that is now being popularized and put
forward by technology providers is that of ?cloud? computing, which could
help organizations reduce their operation and capital expenses whilst
giving flexibility to consumers and end users. The benefits of this and
other schemes are yet to be realized in particular regarding their
environmental impacts within and beyond data processing facilities.
Concerns about availability of energy to fuel computing platforms, mobile
devices, offices or households still remain. Technology providers are
competing to provide sophisticated devices and services whilst trying to
balance their production and recycling processes with their carbon
footprints. There are opportunities and challenges lying ahead for
technology designers, managers and users in taking environmental and green
concerns forward.
OBJECTIVE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE:
This special issue aims to facilitate debate and contributions on how the
systems approach in its various forms and applications can help addressing
issues of design, service use and implementation of computing
