Betreff: [WI] New Formal Approaches to Language, Computation, and
Parallelism
Datum: Wed, 26 May 2010 12:21:13 +0100
Von: Alex Berka <alex.berka(a)isynchronise.com>
An: Alex Berka <a(a)a-r-a-m.org>
Colleague, please be assured this is the only unsolicited announcement
you will receive from Isynchronise Ltd.
Consider the hypothesis that natural language has major structural
defects, and is inappropriate as a template for formal and programming
languages, and as a basis for deriving models of computation.
Isynchronise has developed a new approach to language and computation,
which is a promising avenue for solving the parallel computing crisis.
You are invited to view a 4 page introductory report on
www.isynchronise.com <http://www.isynchronise.com/>, published today. A
summary appears below.
Sincerely.
Alex Berka
Principal Researcher
Isynchonise Ltd
1 Plato Place, 72-74 St. Dionis Rd.
London SW6 4TU England.
Interlanguages and Synchronic Models of Computation.
A novel language system has been developed, which has given rise to
promising alternatives to standard formal and processor network models
of computation, and to the systolic programming of reconfigurable arrays
of Arithmetic Logic Units. A textual structure called the
/interstring/ is proposed, which is a string of strings of simple
expressions of fixed length. Unlike a conventional tree language
expression, an interstring linked with an abstract machine environment,
can represent sharing of sub-expressions in a dataflow, and a program
incorporating data transfers and spatial allocation of resources, for
the parallel evaluation of dataflow output. Formal computation models
called the α/-Ram/ family, are introduced, comprising synchronous,
reconfigurable machines with finite and infinite memories, designed to
support interstring based programming languages (/interlanguages/).
Distinct from dataflow, visual programming, graph rewriting, and FPGA
models, α/-/Ram/ /machines’ instructions are bit level and execute in
situ without fetch. They support high level sequential and parallel
languages without the space/time overheads associated with the Turing
Machine and λ-calculus, enabling massive programs to be simulated. The
elemental devices of one α-Ram machine, called the /Synchronic A-Ram/,
are fully connected and simpler than FPGA look up tables. With the
addition of a mechanism for expressing propagation delay, the machine
may be seen as a formal model for sequential digital circuits and
reconfigurable computing, capable of illuminating issues in massive
parallelism.
A compiler for an applicative-style, interlanguage called /Space/, has
been developed for the Synchronic A-Ram. Space can express coarse to
very fine grained MIMD parallelism, is modular, strictly typed, and
deterministic. Barring operations associated with memory allocation and
compilation, Space modules are referentially transparent. A range of
massively parallel modules have been simulated on the Synchronic A-Ram,
with outputs as expected. Space is more flexible than, and has
advantages over existing graph, dataflow, systolic, and multi-threaded
programming paradigms. At a high level of abstraction, modules exhibit a
small, sequential state transition system, aiding verification.
Composable data structures and parallel iteration are straightforward to
implement, and allocations of parallel sub-processes and communications
to machine resources are implicit. Space points towards a range of
highly connected architectural models called /Synchronic Engines/, with
the potential to scale in a globally asynchronous, locally synchronous
fashion. Synchronic Engines are more general purpose than systolic
arrays and GPUs, and bypass programmability and resource conflict issues
associated with processor networks. If massive intra chip, wave-based
interconnectivity with nanosecond reconfigurability becomes available,
Synchronic Engines will be in favourable position to contend for the
TOP500 parallel machines.

Special Issue on Event Recognition
Applied Artificial Intelligence Journal
=======================================
Users and organisations collect data in various structured and unstructured digital formats, but they cannot fully utilise these data to support content and resource management. It is evident that the analysis and interpretation of the available data needs to be automated, in order for large data volumes to be transformed into operational knowledge. Events are particularly important pieces of
knowledge, as they represent activities of special significance both for users and organisations. Therefore, the recognition of events is of utmost importance. Consider, for example, the recognition of trends given user contributions in social Web 2.0 applications, the recognition of attacks on nodes of a computer network given the exchanged TCP/IP messages, the recognition of suspicious trader
behaviour given the transactions in a financial market, and the recognition of various types of cardiac arrhythmia given electrocardiograms.
We invite quality submissions focusing on various aspects of event recognition, including analysis of video, audio, text and other sensor data, as well as recognition on fused data sources. While we place emphasis on theoretical contributions, we also welcome papers describing interesting applications.
Broad topics include:
=====================
- Representation languages for event recognition
- Algorithms for real-time event recognition
- Probabilistic reasoning for event recognition
- Machine learning for event recognition
- Event recognition architectures
- Benchmarks, performance evaluations, and testbeds
- Domain-specific deployments of event recognition systems
- Multimedia and social media analysis for event recognition
- Clustering, concept recognition and multi-modal/fusion techniques
- User interaction and interfaces for event navigation, browsing and management

CALL FOR PAPERS
8th International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC) 2010
December 7 - 10 2010, San Francisco, California, USA
www.icsoc.org
******************************************************************
The conference
Since 2003, ICSOC has been the prime forum for academics and industry researchers and developers to report and share groundbreaking works in service oriented computing. ICSOC has fostered cross-community scientific excellence by the gathering of experts from various disciplines, such as business process management, distributed systems, computer networks, wireless& mobile computing, grid computing, networking, service science, management science, and software engineering.
Service innovation is key to the future of business. Even in traditionally manufacturing-driven industries, such as IT, the importance of service has surpassed most other corporate competences. The Internet and Web-based services create ever more opportunities for service innovation. Service science is an interdisciplinary approach to the study, design, and implementation of service systems - the specific arrangements of people, organizations, technologies, and information that cocreate value. Service systems are often IT-enabled and knowledge-intensive, and can span different real or virtual organizations. In this multidisciplinary context, researchers and practitioners in management, social sciences, and computer sciences are all working together to promote and facilitate service innovation.
While keeping its roots in scientific excellence and technical depth of service technology, ICSOC 2010 aims to combine the general technical issues with application and business-oriented aspects of service design, following the recent emergence of service science as an interdisciplinary foundation to rationalize and integrate various aspects of service systems.
ICSOC 2010 will bring together scientists, engineers, and practitioners from multiple disciplines to focus on service innovation--enabled by computational and information technology and by complex interactions among systems.
The conference will feature research and industry presentations, keynote presentations, workshops, demonstrations, tutorials, and a PhD track. Please refer to www.icsoc.org for calls for workshops, demonstrations, and tutorials.

October 13-14, 2010, Hasso Plattner Institute, Potsdam, Germany
Call for Papers
www.bpmn2010.org
--------------------------------------------------------
The workshop provides a forum for academics and practitioners
that share an interest in business process modeling using the
Business Process Modeling Notation. Business Process Modeling
Notation (BPMN) experiences huge uptake in both academia and
industry. It is seen by many as the de-facto standard for
business process modeling. It has become very popular with
business analysts, tool vendors, practitioners, and end users.
BPMN promises to bridge business and IT and brings process
design and implemented closer together.
To bring this expressive process language to its full
potential, challenging research questions have to be tackled.
Papers on ongoing and completed research, as well as reports
on practical applications and empirical findings are invited.
Studies on the transfer of research findings obtained for
other process modeling languages to BPMN are encouraged.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
* BPMN and process modelling methodologies
* Consistency between BPMN model types
* Execution Semantics of BPMN
* BPMN modelling extensions and language profiles
* Verification of BPMN models
* Quality of BPMN models
* Empirical research on BPMN
* BPMN and modelling guidelines, best practices
* Integration of BPMN and other process languages
* Labelling consistency in BPMN
* Process execution aspects
* Enterprise applications and BPMN
* Service composition and BPMN
* BPMN and electronic commerce processes
* BPMN and e-government
* User experience studies
* Smart BPMN Editors
* Future directions of BPMN
Important Dates
* Paper submission deadline: June 7, 2010
* Author notification: Jun 30, 2010
* Camera-ready copy: Jul 30, 2010
* Workshop: Oct 13-14, 2010
Submissions
Submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of
significance, originality and technical quality. BPMN 2010
proceedings will be published in Springer's Lecture Notes in
Business Information Processing (LNBIP). Papers of up to 15
pages length are invited. They should clearly establish the
research contribution and the relation to previous research.
Members of an international program committee will review all
submissions. Each paper will be reviewed by three PC members
guaranteeing that only papers presenting high quality and
innovative research and practical issues in areas relevant to
the workshop theme will be accepted.

8th International Workshop on Quality in Databases (QDB'10)
In conjunction with VLDB 2010
September 13th, 2010, Singapore
http://www.dbis.prakinf.tu-ilmenau.de/QDB2010/
-----------------------------------------------------------
-----
FOCUS
-----
The problem of poor data quality in databases, data warehousing and
information systems largely and indistinctly affects every application
domain. Many data processing tasks (such as information integration,
data sharing, information retrieval, and knowledge discovery from
databases) require various forms of data preparation and consolidation
with complex data processing techniques, because the data input to the
algorithms is assumed to conform to nice data distributions,
containing no missing, inconsistent or incorrect values. This leaves a
large gap between the available "dirty" data and the available
machinery to process the data for the application purposes.
The purpose of Quality in Databases (QDB) workshop is a qualified
forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss and get to know the
most innovative and advanced experiences for detecting data anomalies
and assessing, monitoring, improving, and maintaining the quality of
information. More information on the workshop can be found at the
workshop Website: http://www.dbis.prakinf.tu-ilmenau.de/QDB2010/.
The topics of the workshop will include, but will not be limited to:
- Duplicate detection, entity resolution, and entity reconciliation
- Conflict resolution and data fusion
- Data quality models and algebra
- Quality-aware query languages and query processing techniques
- Quality-aware analytics solutions
- Data scrubbing, data standardization, data cleaning techniques
- Data quality in multi-database settings
- Relevance of data quality in the database area
- Role of metadata in quality measurement
- Data quality in Web applications
- Quality of information on the Web
- Data quality mining
- Quality of scientific, geographical, and multimedia databases
- Privacy-preserving data quality management
- Data quality benchmarks
- Data quality assessment, measures and improvement methodologies
---------------------------
FORMAT AND PAPER SUBMISSION
---------------------------
For the QDB 2010 edition of the workshop, in addition to regular research
papers, we would like to promote the presentations of research-in-progress
papers and posters. For this reason, we accept three categories for
submission:
- research papers (should not exceed 10 pages)
- short papers (up to 6 pages)
- posters (up to 3 pages).
In line with our main intent for fruitful discussions and exchanges, in
addition to previously unpublished material that can be submitted in any
of the above formats, the program committee welcomes short paper
submissions and posters that include ideas and material that may have
appeared elsewhere, insofar as they are judged to be a sound and
valuable contribution to the discussion. Papers to be included in the
QDB workshop's research sessions will be reviewed by at least three
people from the program committee.
Depending on the number and quality of submissions, the best papers of
the workshop may be recommended for fast-tracking to the ACM Journal of
Data and Information Quality (JDIQ).
Paper submissions should be made on-line through QDB 2010's CMT paper
submission site: https://cmt.research.microsoft.com/QDB2010/
The papers have to be formatted according the VDLB formatting guidelines
(see http://www.vldb2010.org/ppp.htm). All papers must be submitted in
PDF. Please ensure that any special fonts used are included in the
submitted documents. It is essential that the submitted papers print
without difficulty on a variety of printers using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
In case of paper acceptance, the authors agree that at least one of them
will register for the workshop and present the paper.
