==INFORMATIK 2010 Workshop on "Web Science"==
//co-located with the annual meeting of the German Society for Computer Science (GI) 2010 ((http://www.informatik2010.de/))//
Web science is often referred to as the "science of decentralized information systems". While novel technologies such as semantic web, web services, and cloud computing are germane to the broad proliferation of Web technologies, we also need to understand phenomena of the Web in the small as well as in the large, in order to retain its usefulness and benefit to people. This is in the center of attention of Web science and includes besides the mentioned technological approaches, research related to online communities, information diffusion on the Web, Web governance, global network structures beyond the individual communities on the Web, growth analysis, incentive and monetization systems.
Because the web itself is socially embedded a particular focus of this first GI workshop on Web Science are social computing applications, such as Wikipedia, Facebook, or del.icio.us, which are analysed with regard to the complex interdependencies between constraints imposed by the technical system as well as with regard to their use in social actions and interactions under varying social contexts. Understanding dynamics and evolution of these systems, as they depend on inherent social and informational structures, is of particular interest, because it is the dynamics of such communities that determines their final success or failure. In order to analyze social computing applications, interplay between aspects of computer science, for example computational network analysis, visualization techniques, graph theoretic models, semantic web technologies, and machine learning techniques, with social science and psychology is required.
In this interdisciplinary workshop we are aiming to bridge the gap between paradigms and encourage interdisciplinary collaborations as well as advance and deepen our understanding of web science. Joint efforts are needed to take advantage of the state-of-the-art research from multiple disciplines, such as computer science, information systems, sociology, and psychology. Moreover, this workshop provides a platform for researchers and practitioners to exchange preliminary results, new concepts and methodologies in this area.
===Topics of interest ===
Topics of interest include but not limited to:
* Web Governance incl. Provenance, Licensing, Data Security, Access Control
* Open Knowledge ecosystems on the Web, such as Open Governmental Data, Open Scientific Data
* Information quality assessment
* Quality, coherence and user interaction on the Linked Data Web
* Social computing applications such as collaborative filtering, community-based information retrieval and recommendation, collaborative bookmarking, tagging and multi-agent systems
* Static and dynamic models of Web structure and Web growth
* Analysis of network structures within and beyond individual communities on the Web
* Incentive and monetization systems
* Information diffusion on the Web,
* Web and Web application governance,
* Novel visualisation techniques for Web related data
* Integrating computational network analysis and semantic web techniques, for example to enhance the mainly structure-based network analysis by semantic information
* Case studies of communities such as Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter, World of Warcraft, open source software as well as empirical findings in social computing-related applications
In particular, we aim at collecting a set of requirements, architectural styles and metaphors for Web science.
It is the target of such terminology and figures to build bridges of understanding between the different communities serving the need to appropriately //analyse// and //develop// social Web applications.
===Extent, structure, and selection of contributions===

Workshop
===========
Web 2.0 has changed the technological landscape the Internet computing world
today. One of the most important outcomes of Web 2.0 is to turn the web from
a read-only medium to a read-write environment. As a result, volume of the
data on the web is doubled since the emergence of Web 2.0 technologies and
huge amount of data is created by web community every day via social
networks, digital contributions and data feeds. Consequently, data mining in
the user generated entities and extracting the derived knowledge and
information patterns are the new threat to privacy of individuals. Similarly,
data is increasingly stored “in the cloud” and users may not be aware of
privacy aspects involved. Not only does the provider have access to
(unencrypted) data but user authentication relies on passwords only.
The goal of this workshop is to raise awareness about privacy aspects of
social web and cloud computing and bring together experts from academia,
industry, government and law enforcement who are interested in advancing the
state of the art in social computing and privacy topics by exchanging their
knowledge, results, ideas and experiences.

PAPER ONE
Woad: a Framework to Enable the End-User Development of Coordination-oriented Functionalities
Federico Cabitza, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, Italy
Carla Simone, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, Italy
In this article, we present WOAD, a framework that was inspired and partly validated within a 2-year observational case study at a major teaching hospital. We present the WOAD framework by stating its main and motivating rationales, outlining its high-level architecture and then introducing its denotational language, LWOAD. We propose LWOAD to support users of an electronic document system in declaratively expressing, specifying and implementing content- and event-based mechanisms that fulfill coordinative requirements and make users aware of relevant conditions. Our focus addresses (a) the user-friendly and yet formal expression of local coordinative practices based on the work context; (b) the promotion of awareness of both these conventions and the context to enable actors to quickly respond; (c) the full deployment of coordination-oriented and context-aware functionalities into legacy electronic document systems. We give examples of LWOAD mechanisms taken from the case study and discuss their impact from the EUD perspective.

Entering the Clubhouse: Case Studies of Young Programmers Joining the Online Scratch Communities
Yasmin B. Kafai, University of Pennsylvania, USA
Deborah A. Fields, University of California, Los Angeles, USA
William Q. Burke, University of Pennsylvania, USA
Previous efforts in end-user development have focused on facilitating the mechanics of learning programming, leaving aside social and cultural factors equally important in getting youth engaged in programming. As part of a 4-month long ethnographic study, we followed two 12-year-old participants as they learned the programming software Scratch and its associated file-sharing site, scratch.mit.edu, in an after-school club and class. In our discussion, we focus on the role that agency, membership, and status played in their joining and participating in local and online communities of programmers.

PAPER THREE
Mutual Development: The Software Engineering Context of End-User Development
Anders I. Mørch, University of Oslo, Norway
Renate Andersen, University of Oslo, Norway
The article presents and analyzes data from a case study in customer-initiated software product development. We have observed and participated in system development activities in a commercial software house (company) over a period of two years. The company produces project-planning tools for the oil and gas industry, and relies on interaction with customers for further development of its products. Our main research question is how customers and professional developers engage in mutual development mediated by shared software tools (products and support systems). We have used interviews with developers and customers as our main source of data, and identified the activities (from use to development) where customers have contributed to development. We analyze our findings in terms of co-configuration, meta-design and modding to name and compare the various stages of development (adaptation, generalization, improvement request, specialization, and tailoring).

PAPER FOUR
Appropriation Infrastructure: Mediating Appropriation and Production Work
Gunnar Stevens, University of Siegen and Fraunhofer FIT, Germany
Volkmar Pipek, University of Siegen and Fraunhofer FIT, Germany
Volker Wulf, University of Siegen and Fraunhofer FIT, Germany
End User Development offers technological flexibility to encourage the appropriation of software applications within specific contexts of use. Appropriation needs to be understood as a phenomenon of many collaborative and creative activities. To support appropriation, we propose integrating communication infrastructure into software application that follows an "easy-to-collaborate"-principle. Such an appropriation infrastructure stimulates the experience sharing among a heterogeneous product community and supports the situated development of usages. Taking the case of the BSCWeasel groupware, we demonstrate how an appropriation infrastructure can be realized. Empirical results from the BSCWeasel project demonstrate the impact of such an infrastructure on the appropriation and design process. Based on these results, we argue that the social construction of IT artifacts should be tightly integrated in the material construction of IT artifacts in bridging design and use discourses.
