Call for Papers
The Third International Workshop on Management and Economics of
Software Product Lines (MESPUL09)
!!!!The Workshop on Value-Base Product Line Engineering!!!!
is part of the
12th International Software Product Line Conference (SPLC 2009)
San Francisco, USA
(The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, 25 August 2009)
Product line engineering (PLE) has become a viable and important
software development paradigm. Many companies adopted a product line
engineering approach to improve the efficiency of their development
processes, to increase the quality of end products, and reduce
time-to-market and cost.
Researchers and practitioners have proposed several methods, techniques,
and tools to support the technical aspects of software product line
engineering. Research has also been reported on different mechanics of
calculating ROI, understanding Cost-Benefits, and critical factors in
adopting software product lines. However, the body of knowledge on
management and economics aspects of software product lines is still very
small.
Adoption and management of software product lines is often said to require
a significant initial investment to successfully maximize the business
value.
Further, managing a product line project is far more complex and difficult
because of the inter-related structure between core assets and products,
multiple deadlines, resource allocation, etc. Software product line
practitioners need new approaches, models, and tools for addressing the
challenges related to the management and economics of software product
lines.
There is also a significant need for gathering more empirical evidence
regarding
the different approaches of PLE.
The international workshop on management and economics of software product
lines
aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia,
industry and
government to report and discuss the challenges and opportunities of
adopting and
managing software product lines from managerial, organizational, and
economics
point of view. The workshop will provide a forum to present ideas about
existing
management and organizational strategies and economic models for software
product
lines and/or propose new approaches, techniques, and tools for business
and
technical managers to maximize the business value of software product line
engineering.
The workshop will cover a broad spectrum of research papers, experience
reports,
and position papers relevant to the economic, management, and
organizational
aspects of software product line engineering.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
 Models for cost-benefit analysis
Economic models applicable to software product line engineering
Managerial strategies for successful software product line engineering
Product line strategy definition and scoping
Application of value-based approaches to software product line
engineering.
Cost-benefits tradeoffs in technical aspects (e.g., architecture
definition)
Management, organizational, and business strategies for adopting
software product lines
Mechanics of calculating ROI for software product line engineering
Risks and economic benefits of using Open Source Software in SPLs
Cost and effort estimation models for developing core and product
specific artifacts
Opportunities and Challenges in using agile approaches for software
product lines
Empirical studies of product line engineering benefits
New approaches to the empirical analysis of product line engineering

Call for Papers ACIS 2009
Paper submissions due: July 3, 2009
Panel, Workshop & Tutorial Proposals due: August 1, 2009
The Australasian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS) is the premier
conference in Australasia for Information Systems academics, covering
technical, organisational, business and social issues in the application
of Information Technology (IT) to real world problems. In 2009, the 20th
ACIS will be held at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, December
2-4. It is hosted by the Faculty of Information Technology of Monash
University, Melbourne.
Conference Theme: Since the inception of the IS discipline scholars have
questioned and debated what constitutes the domain of IS research. The
pervasive use of information technology not just for work purposes but for
everyday life, and the recent downturn in student numbers, have made the
question of the domain of IS more than just of academic interest. For
ACIS for 2009 we seek not to look back at what the IS domain has been, but
to look forward to what it is to become. We seek to examine the definition
of the IS discipline not by reflecting on where the IS discipline came
from, but by exhibiting research at the forefront of where the discipline
is heading into the future. The conference theme for 2009 is:
Evolving Boundaries and New Frontiers: Defining the IS Discipline
We therefore invite submissions from colleagues in academia and industry
across Australia, New Zealand, the Asia-Pacific and beyond to address this
theme.
Paper tracks include:
1. New Frontiers and Evolving Boundaries
2. The Business of Information Systems: Managing Projects and Investments
3. Cognitive and behavioural perspectives on information systems
4. Design Science and Modelling for Information Systems Development
5. Information Systems: Strategy and Management
6. IT enabled collaboration: organisations, communities and society
7. Information Systems Theory and Philosophy
8. Information Systems Challenges: Panels and Debates
9. IS Pedagogy: Panels, Workshops, Tutorials and Cases
Submissions are also invited on any topics relevant to information systems
and are not limited to the tracks above.

In this special issue, the guest editors are pleased to present five
innovative, relevant, and theoretically robust peer-reviewed studies where
critical decision-making situations are addressed through the application,
adaptation, and new proposal of a systems approach. This special issue on
Decision-Making Technologies: A Systems Approach covers the effects of
managerial and technical decisions (planned or unexpected changes) on
several IS development effort metrics, presents an innovative procedure to
classify catastrophic scenarios (man-made and natural) by similarity
indices, and discusses the design, implementation, and exploratory empirical
testing of architecture for a spatial decision support systems. This issue
also focuses on the design and managerial implications on complex
large-scale systems of systems and provides evidence on the suitability for
designing system solutions to complex technical-economical engineering
problems by using three systems engineering methods.

PAPER ONE
Dynamics in IS Development: A Multi-Method Experiment to Measure the Effects
of Disruptions during the Development Process
Peter Otto, Union Graduate College, USA
Salvatore Belardo, University at Albany, USA
The failure of many IS development efforts suggests that the development
process, in particular the role that key antecedents play in ensuring
success, is poorly understood. Information systems are based on a series of
highly complex interrelated tasks that can be significantly affected by
organizational, project, and technical drivers. Changes or disruptions in
these can have severe and unanticipated consequences for IS development
efforts. To help understand how disruptions during the IS development
initiative affect the quality of the system, the authors employ the system
dynamics methodology to capture feedback from non-linear activities.

PAPER TWO
A Mediator for Biospatial Information Systems
Renato Barrera, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico
Abraham Alcántara, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico
Carlos Alegría, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico
Ana L. Ávila, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico
David Esparza, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico
Augusto D. Hernández, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico
Ivonne Rivera, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico
This article presents a system to enable access to those information systems
at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) that are related to
biodiversity and the environment. The system in question associates existing
geographic information systems (GISs) and standard relational databases in
a federation that allows the contents of the individual GIS (or relational
databases) to be consulted in a manner transparent to the user and permits
the exports of the underlying systems data under the corresponding set of
permissions. The authors present an approach based upon three principles:
compliance with international standards, reliance upon open source software
in implementation, and usage of servers of proven reliability and
robustness.

PAPER THREE
Decision-Making Approach for Catastrophic Scenario Selection in Disaster
Recovery Planning
Jose Emmanuel Ramirez-Marquez, Stevens Institute of Technology, USA
John V. Farr, Stevens Institute of Technology, USA
Generally, throughout history societies have failed to prepare beforehand
for potential man made and natural catastrophic events; however, as
societies evolve, their view on what can and should be done when affected by
these types of events has shifted from a passive acknowledgement that
catastrophes will happen, into a proactive stance on planning and organizing
resources to mitigate their effects. This paper presents a decision-making
based approach for catastrophic scenario selections to guide the process of
disaster recovery planning development. The approach proposed is used to
identify the most damaging scenarios in terms of probability of outcome
occurrence.

PAPER FOUR
A Framework for Analysis, Design and Management of Complex Large-Scale
Interconnected Open Sociotechnological Systems
Ali Mostashari, Stevens Institute of Technology, USA
Joseph M. Sussman, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA
Standard systems engineering processes, such as the ANSI/EIA 632 or the
ISO/IEC 15288 process standards, are primarily geared towards systems with
homogenous stakeholders and few tightly coupled non-linear interactions
within and between physical subsystems. This paper presents a 12-step
framework for concurrent analysis, design, and management of coupled complex
technological and institutional systems in the face of uncertainty. The
framework is used to analyze a CLIOS systems underlying structure and
behavior, to explore different design options in the face of uncertainty,
and to identify and deploy strategic alternatives for improving the systems
performance.

PAPER FIVE
The Design for Tractable Analysis (DTA) Framework: A Methodology for the
Analysis and Simulation of Complex Systems
John M. Linebarger, Sandia National Laboratories, USA
Mark J. De Spain, Sandia National Laboratories, USA
Michael J. McDonald, Sandia National Laboratories, USA
Floyd W. Spencer, Sandia National Laboratories, USA
Robert J. Cloutier, Stevens Institute of Technology, USA
The design for tractable analysis (DTA) framework was developed to address
the analysis of complex systems and so-called wicked problems. DTA is
distinctive because it treats analytic processes as key artifacts that can
be created and improved through formal design processes. Systems (or
enterprises) are analyzed as a whole, in conjunction with decomposing them
into constituent elements for domain-specific analyses that are informed by
the whole. After using the systems modeling language (SysML) to frame the
problem in the context of stakeholder needs, DTA harnesses the Design
Structure Matrix (DSM) to structure the analysis of the system and address
questions about the emergent properties of the system. The use of DTA is
demonstrated by a case study of sensor grid placement decisions to secure
assets at a fixed site.

Colleagues,
Call for Papers
Special Edition of the Journal of Organizational and End User Computing
Security, Privacy, and Risks Issues in Health Care: An Information Assurance Perspective
The Journal of Organizational and End User Computing is seeking original research focused on organizational and end user security, privacy, and risk issues. Researchers are encouraged to use the Information Assurance (IA) framework as presented by McCumber (1991) and extended by Machonachy, Schou, Ragsdale, and Welch (2001). IA representations using these frameworks provide researchers with numerous perspectives in which to evaluate security, privacy, and risk.
Focusing on three broad concepts, Information Goal, States, and Safeguards, the IA representations illustrate the intersection of the three concepts within the following broader dimensions. Goals of the Information System: Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability, Authentication, and Non-Repudiation; Information States, Data storage, Data transmission, and Data processing; and Safeguards: Technology, Policy and Procedures, and Human Factors. In addition to the concepts and corresponding dimensions, IA also considers the System Life Cycle dimensions of Initiation, Operations, and Termination of the system.
We welcome theoretical and empirical research that incorporate security, privacy, and risk in health care environments. Topics ranging from human computer interfaces, personal health records, confidentiality, and health maintenance are a few examples of end user oriented health care inquiries. In addition to end user oriented issues, organizational issues include risk mitigation, particularly in HIPAA or other regulatory environments. IA also provides a framework to minimize risk via Governance, including research related to compliance, disaster recovery, and organizational continuity.
Please note that the manuscripts accepted into the 43rd Hawaiian International Conference on System Sciences Minitrack on Information Assurance and Interoperability in Health Care within the Health Care in the Information Technology in Health Care Track (http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_43/minitracks/hc-iai.htm) will be fast tracked for acceptance into this special edition.
