University of Calabria, Italy
Aim and Scope
-------------
During last years, the issue of effectively and efficiently supporting
data warehousing and knowledge discovery from sensor networks, and, more
generally, data stream sources, which can be reasonably intended as a
meaningfully generalization of the former kind of networks, is gaining a
more and more great deal of interest from the data warehousing and
knowledge discovery research community. Main research issues in this
scientific field arise from the clear and well-recognized unsuitability of
traditional data warehousing and knowledge discovery methodologies,
techniques and algorithms in dealing with the new challenges posed by
sensor network data and, more generally, data streams. Indeed, traditional
approaches are meant for multi-step methodologies and techniques, and
multi-scan algorithms, which cannot be straightforwardly applied to sensor
network data and data streams, due to well-known limitations such as
bounded memory, online/timely data processing, need for one-pass
techniques, energy consumption issues etc.
Starting from these limitations, a plethora of data warehousing and
knowledge discovery methodologies, techniques and algorithms have been
proposed during these last years, and, simultaneously, a more and more
large number of research events have focused their attention to this
leading research challenge. Following this actual trend and the previous
successful related event represented by the book Intelligent Techniques
for Warehousing and Mining Sensor Network Data
(http://si.deis.unical.it/~cuzzocrea/SensorBook2007/), the First
International Workshop on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery from
Sensors and Streams, which will be held in Marina Del Rey, CA, USA, during
June 8-10, 2009, in conjunction with the 5th International Conference on
Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems (DCOSS 2009)
(http://www.dcoss.org/index.php), will provide a leading forum for
researchers and practitioners interested in data warehousing and knowledge
discovery from sensor network data and data streams, to meet and exchange
preliminary ideas and mature results, with emphasis on both the
theoretical and practical point of view.
The First International Workshop on Data Warehousing and Knowledge

Ubiquitous User Modeling 2009 (UbiqUM 2009)
(co-located with UMAP'09)
UbiqUM 2009 will be the 7th International Workshop on Ubiquitous User
Modelling.
It will take place in Trento, Italy on Jne 22nd, 2009, as part of UMAP
2009.
http://www.u2m.org/ubiqum2009/
Background and Motivation:
In today's information world, small personal computerized devices, such as
PDAs, smart phones and other smart appliances, become widely available and
essential tools in many situations. The ongoing penetration of computers
into everyday life leads to so-called ubiquitous computing environments,
where computational power and networking capabilities are available (and
used) everywhere to support the environments inhabitants. The strive of
providing personal services to users made user modeling capability an
essential part of any ubiquitous application. Ubiquitous user modelling
(UbiqUM) describes ongoing modeling and exploitation of user behaviour
with a variety of systems that share their user models. These shared user
models can either be used for mutual or for individual adaptation goals.
UbiqUM differs from generic user modelling by three additional concepts:
ongoing modeling, ongoing sharing and ongoing exploitation. Systems that
share their user models will improve the coverage, the level of detail,
and the reliability of the integrated user models and thus allow better
functions of adaptation. UbiqUM implies new challenges of
interchangeability, scalability, scrutability and privacy.
The workshop will focus on 2 topics:
1. User modelling in mobile and ubiquitous computing collecting user
information in a ubiquitous environment and converting it into meaningful
user modelling data. This includes sub-topics, such as acquisition of
distributed and context-aware user models; user modeling in intelligent
environments; ubiquitous user modeling for entertainment and cultural
heritage; pervasive and wearable user interfaces; privacy, security and
trust in ubiquitous user modelling.
2. User model integration combining the data acquired by various
ubiquitous devices and systems. This includes topics, such as overcoming
syntactic and semantic heterogeneity of distributed user models; conflict
resolution in ubiquitous user modeling; user model representation,
inferences with user and context models; spatial and temporal reasoning
for ubiquitous user modeling; semantic web approaches and ontologies for
ubiquitous user modelling, ontology mapping and alignment.
Objectives:
1.To foster interaction and exchange of ideas within the UbiqUM Community.
2.To establish a research agenda in the area of UbiqUM by mutual
discussion of the challenges for UbiqUM research issues by the research
community.
3.To provide an opportunity for information exchange and possible future
research collaboration within the UbiqUM Community
Submission:
Submitted papers should be up to 4 pages long, in LNCS format, by email,
to ubiqum(a)googlemail.com. They should suggest novel research ideas in the
workshop areas of interest, and preferably describe initial research
results (if there are any).
Important Dates:
Paper submission deadline: Friday, March 27th, 2007
Notification of acceptance: Wednesday, April 15th, 2007
Camera-ready papers due: Friday, April 24th, 2007
UbiqUM 2009 workshop: June 22th, 2008
Workshop Format:
The suggested workshop will be a full day workshop in the following
format:
09:00 10:00 An invited talk about state of the art in ubiquitous user
modelling
10:30 12:30 First session with short presentations of papers/ideas
(about 10 minuts per speaker),

WI 2009 will provide a leading international forum of scientific
research and development to explore the fundamental interactions
between AI-engineering and Advanced Information Technology
(e.g., wireless networks, ubiquitous devices, social networks, and
data/knowledge grids), and their role on the next generation of
Web-empowered products, Web systems and services. AI-engineering
refers to a new area, slightly beyond tradional AI, which encompasses:
brain informatics, human level AI, intelligent agents, social network
intelligence, knowledge engineering, representation, planning, data
mining and discovery.
WI 2009 will be jointly held with the 2009 IEEE/WIC/ACM International
Conference on Intelligent Agent Technology (IAT-09). The two
conferences will have a joint opening, keynote, reception, and
banquet. Attendees only need to register for one conference and can
attend workshops, sessions, tutorials, panels, exhibits and
demonstrations across the two conferences. We are also planning a
joint panel, joint paper sessions, and a doctoral mentoring program to
discuss common problems in the two areas.

This workshop will take place during the ICWL 2009 in Aachen, Germany
(August 19-21) as a special program item.
The Workshop ViWo 2009 provides an interdisciplinary forum for
international scientists and practitioners to discuss various aspects of
learning and training in virtual worlds.
The 8th International Conference on International Conference on
Web-based Learning, ICWL2009, will be jointly organized by Hong Kong Web
Society, RWTH Aachen University, and Max-Planck-Institute for Computer
Science. ICWL is an annual international conference on web-based learning.
Background
Our society of the 21st century makes great demands on its members
caused by rapid developing and ever-changing political, social,
economical and technological situations. Consequently, it is expected
that members of the society keep pace with these mutable situations,
adapt their skills and expertise. As a result, modern instructional
design, learning goals and processes as well as appropriate learning
environments must support the development of the aforementioned skills
and expertises. Consequently, educational approaches have changed
dramatically over time from less formal schooling in the agrarian
society to remedial repetitive learning in the industrialization age to
learning with an understanding in today’s knowledge society. Based on
that, different modern educational strategies have been developed which
includes aspects such as self-directed learning, collaborative learning,
experiential-based learning and actively participating. Educational
approaches have also been influenced by technology but have also
increasingly applied technology over the last decades, such as motion
pictures, radio, television, computers and other emerging information
and communication technologies (ICT).
Last year’s hype surrounding the virtual world “Second Life” has also
generated significant interest in the education community. Although
virtual worlds have been an active research topic for a long time,
technology was not ready for complex application scenarios since recent
years. New interesting and powerful platforms and tools, such as Second
Life, Active Worlds, Multiverse, Open Croquet, OpenSim and Sun’s 3D
Wonderland, have been emerged applicable to complement or even replace
other knowledge transfer and learning settings. Modern virtual worlds
are seen from an optimistic viewpoint as a disruptive and transformative
technology. However, it still remains unclear to some extent where the
real benefits and limitations of using virtual worlds as knowledge
transfer and learning environments are when compared to more traditional
methods. In order to avoid the same pitfalls of past e-learning
solutions by just applying traditional learning approaches to a new
technology, this special track is indented to offer a multidisciplinary
platform which brings together international researchers from different
organizations in order to share their experience with this technology.
Topics
We invite submissions of papers in the categories research, development,
evaluation and best practices that deal with virtual worlds for

Workshop Theme
==============
As part of their e-business activities, enterprises create, share,
recombine, and process an ever increasing amount of data and documents
that range from simple transactional data to complex business process
definitions. In many respective processes, multiple spheres overlap,
e.g., (1) inter- with intra-organizational data sources in collaborative
processes, (2) master data with transactional data, (3) regular data
with behavioral aspects of processes, or (4) facts with normative
assertions. Since business entities are members of multiple value chains,
same as data sources are often used in multiple contexts and processes,
there are often conflicting requirements on the representation of such
data. At the same time, enterprise computing infrastructures are
currently transforming into service-oriented systems; this change has
severe consequences as well as offers opportunities for the data
management processes.
All this in combination makes data engineering in e-commerce and service-
oriented computing a very challenging task, already at the level of a
single company but even more in value chains. Also, respective modeling
choices may have long-lasting and far reaching impact, and affect (1)
operational efficiency, (2) business process agility, (3) the range of
analytical tasks for decision support, and (4) strategic options.
Eventually, those choices determine the current and future degree of
automation in content and process integration.
While e-business standards in general help, standardization alone does not
solve the problem. This is because yielding a consensual representation
takes time, consumes resources, and constrains an entitys ability to
capture individual details. Moreover, the cost of implementing and
enforcing the standards is sometimes prohibitive for small businesses.
Proprietary representations, on the other hand, hamper interoperability,
and complicate B2B integration. In service-oriented architectures (SOAs),
this complexity is further increased by the behavioral dimension of
e-business interactions, e.g., services choreography and orchestration.
This workshop aims at providing a venue for discussion and the exchange
of ideas on data and knowledge engineering issues in the dynamic
environment of e-business, enterprise computing, and business services
and transformation. The relation to CEC 2009 is that it addresses a core
problem in enterprise computing. In the format of an interactive workshop,
it focuses the intersection of three main areas: data engineering,
knowledge engineering, and business process management.

DESCRIPTION
In today's competitive and highly dynamic environment, it has become
critical to analyze data to understand how the business is performing, to
predict outcomes and trends, and to improve the effectiveness of business
processes underlying business operations. The traditional approach to
reporting is no longer adequate, users now demand easy-to-use intelligent
platforms and applications capable of analyzing real-time business data to
provide insight and actionable information at the right time. The end goal
is to improve the enterprise performance by better and timelier decision
making, enabled by the availability of up-to-date, high quality
information.
As a response, the notion of "real-time enterprise" has emerged and is
beginning to be recognized in the industry. Gartner defines it as "using
up-to-date information, getting rid of delays, and using speed for
competitive advantage is what the real-time enterprise is all about...
Indeed, the goal of the real-time enterprise is to act on events as they
happen."
Although there has been progress in this direction and many companies are
introducing products towards making this vision reality, there is still a
long way to go. In particular, the whole lifecycle of business
intelligence requires new techniques and methodologies capable of dealing
with the new requirements imposed by the real-time enterprise.
From the capturing of real-time business performance data to the
injection of actionable information back into business processes, all the
stages of the Business Intelligence (BI) cycle call for new algorithms and
paradigms as the basis of new functionalities including dynamic
integration of real-time data feeds from operational sources, evolution of
ETL transformations and analytical models, and dynamic generation of
adaptive real-time dashboards, just to name a few.
The series of BIRTE workshops aims to provide a forum to discuss topics
related to this emerging field and set research directions of business
intelligence (BI) toward the vision of the real-time enterprise.
Following the success of BIRTE 2006 held in Seoul, Korea in conjunction
with VLDB 2006, and BIRTE 2008 held in Auckland, New Zealand in
conjunction with VLDB 2008, submissions for research, position and
experience papers on relevant topics are encouraged.

PAPER ONE:
A Simulation System for Evaluating Knowledge Management System (KMS)
Implementation Strategies in Small to Mid-Size Enterprises (SME)
Robert Judge, San Diego State University, USA
Companies create and use information and knowledge every day. The problem
all companies have is figuring out how to efficiently discover that
knowledge, capture it, share it, and use it to gain competitive advantage
in the marketplace. This article describes a simulation model designed to
provide small to midsized enterprises (SME) with a means to understand the
impact of barriers and value accelerators on the flow of organizational
information. The simulation model reports the throughput of information,
its timeliness, and provides for sensitivity analysis of the parameters
describing a strategy.

PAPER TWO:
Perceptions and Knowledge Sharing Practices of Graduate Students in
Singapore
Shaheen Majid, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
Sim Mong Wey, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
The concept of knowledge sharing is gaining popularity due to increased
awareness and new initiatives in knowledge management; however, its
implications in the educational arena have been relatively unexplored. The
purpose of this study is to investigate perceptions, nature, and extent of
knowledge sharing among graduate students in Singapore. A questionnaire
was used for data collection, and 183 students from two public
universities in Singapore participated in this study. The study suggests
that academic institutions should review their instruction approaches.

PAPER THREE:
Cocreating Corporate Knowledge with a Wiki
Joseph A. Meloche, University of Wollongong, Australia
Helen Hasan, University of Wollongong, Australia
David Willis, BlueScope Steel Research, Australia
Charmaine C. Pfaff, University of Wollongong, Australia
Yan Qi, University of Wollongong, Australia
Wikis have a growing reputation on the open Internet for producing
evolving stores of shared knowledge; however, such democratic systems are
often treated with suspicion within corporations for management, legal,
social, and other reasons. This article describes a field study of a
corporate wiki that has been developed to capture and make available,
organizational knowledge in a large manufacturing company as an initiative
of their knowledge management (KM) program. As this approach to KM is a
controversial and rapidly changing phenomenon, a q-methodology research
approach is selected to uncover employees' subjective attitudes to the
wiki. The authors use activity theory to provide a deeper interpretation
of the findings of the q-study. This article also demonstrates how
meaningful and rigorous research on this new democratic direction of
corporate KM should continue.

PAPER FOUR:
Reaching for the Moon: Expanding Transactive Memory's Reach with Wikis and
Tagging
Mark B. Allan, NASA Ames Research Center, USA
Anthony A. Korolis, IBM Corporation, USA
Terri L. Griffith, Santa Clara University, USA
Transactive memory systems (TMS) support knowledge sharing and
coordination in groups. TMS is enabled by the encoding, storage,
retrieval, and communication of knowledge by domain experts. The NASA Ames
Intelligent Robotics Group provides an example of how TMS theoretical
boundaries are stretched in actual use. This group is characterized as
being highly innovative as they routinely engage in field studies that are
inherently difficult due to time and technology resource constraints. The
authors provide an expanded view of TMS that includes the technology
support system and possible further extensions to NASA's or other dynamic
groups' practice.

PAPER FIVE:
Improving Supply Chain Performance through the Implementation of Process
Related Knowledge Transfer Mechanisms
Stephen McLaughlin, University of Glasgow, UK
With the complexity of organizations increasing, it is becoming vitally
important that organizations understand how knowledge is created and
shared around their core business processes; however, many organizations
deploy technology without due consideration for how their employees
access, create, and share information and knowledge. This article explores
the subject empirically through the study of how employees work with
information and knowledge around a core business function-in this case a
supply chain process. In order to do this, the organization needs to be
viewed from a network perspective as it relates to specific business
processes. Viewing the organization in this way enables the author to see
how employees' preferred knowledge and information transfer mechanisms
vary across the core process.

PAPER SIX:
Capturing Tacit Knowledge from Transient Workers: Improving the
Organizational Competitiveness
Salah Eldin Adam Hamza, SOFCON Consulting Engineering Co., Saudi Arabia
This article studies the way tacit knowledge is dealt with in a high
turnover business environment through a qualitative research approach in
an engineering organization with respect to organizational culture and
values and the effect in competitive stance. This article discusses the
affect peer review processes and managerial/supervisory styles on job
success, core values, and open-door policy environment for a quick tacit
knowledge harvesting. This study directs future research towards
evaluating possible objectives for utilization of KM technological
resources, timeline for effective codification of tacit knowledge, and
responsibilities for handling resources.
