Workshop Topics
The workshop provides a forum for academics and pracitioners that share an
interest in business process modeling using the Business Process Modeling
Notation. The Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) has seen a huge
uptake in both academia and industry and already is the de-facto standard
for business process modelling. It has become very popular with business
analysts, tool vendors, practitioners and end users. BPMN promises to bridge
business and IT and brings as designed and as implemented closer together.
While BPMN evolves and usage increases, a number of research questions
around BPMN arise. Papers on ongoing and completed research, state of the
art surveys, and reports on practical application, and empirical findings
are invited. The workshop aims to identify current research directions as
well as industry trends. Topics include, but are not limited to:
BPMN and process modelling,
Semantics of the BPMN language,
BPMN modelling extensions and language profiles
Verification of BPMN models,
Quality of BPMN models,
Empirical research on BPMN,
BPMN and modelling guidelines,
Integration of BPMN and other process languages,
Semantic aspects in BPMN,
BPMN and process execution,
BPMN and enterprise applications (e.g., ERP),
BPMN and service composition,
BPMN and electronic commerce,
BPMN and e-government,

Notification of authors: March 23, 2009
Camera ready papers: April 10, 2009
AIMS, SCOPE AND TOPICS
In our society which has already turned to a service providing society,
the technical aspects as well as the human, social and economic aspects
must be considered together. This has already resulted in considerable
research on these aspects that are related to disciplines like Information
Systems, Software Engineering and Service Science, as for example, how
empirical research should be conducted, what are the conditions for
"valid" knowledge, and which the scope of theories in these fields are.
These are elements that are of interest from perspectives as diverse as
philosophy, engineering and technology. For example, the material and
temporal entities that are dealt with in the field are a matter of
ontology, and the conditions for credibility of statements and research
methods are a matter of epistemology. Hence the relationship and
influences between software, information systems and service science will
be studied from an ontological view point, but with a broad perspective
under which researchers with different background can meet and truly
multi-disciplinary issues can arise.
As in the previous editions the main goal of this event is to allow
challenging and promising cross-fertilization over multidisciplinary
research areas to be tackled and investigated by all the participants. The
design of systems in which parts have complex interactions, more and more
the understanding of theoretical, epistemological and conceptual
frameworks coming from the human and social sciences.
Topics therefore include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Ontology and formal ontology representations of Software Engineering,
Systems Engineering, Service Engineering and Information Systems.

The Second Multidisciplinary Workshop on Identity in the Information Society (IDIS 09): Call for Papers
Date: 5 June 2009
Venue: London School of Economics, London, UK
http://is2.lse.ac.uk/idis/2009/
Following the successful IDIS 08 workshop held at Lago Maggiore in June 2008, we are pleased to release a Call for Papers for the second Annual Workshop on Identity in the Information Society (IDIS 09), to be held on June 5, 2009 in London, England, at the campus of the London School of Economics and Political Science.
The workshop aims to provide an opportunity to present leading edge research, exchange ideas, encourage collaboration, and build communities across the various research groups working on contemporary identity topics and in related fields of privacy and security.
The theme of the Second Multidisciplinary Workshop on Identity in the Information Society is "Identity and the Impact of Technology". The workshop will seek to explore the relationship between the ways in which identity and technology have mutually shaped each other.
New technologies for the control and management of identity are being developed and introduced daily by public administrations and online businesses; technologies which are designed to alter the way that citizens and consumers interact with these bodies. New notions of identity are being made possible by technological innovation.
Just some of the questions that are raised in this area are:
* How far has technology altered prevailing notions of identity?
* What new technologies are emerging and what might be their impacts?
* To what extent is it possible to inscribe legal requirements into technologies of identity, and with what results?
Confirmed Keynote Speakers:
1) Kevin W. Bowyer
Schubmehl-Prein Professor and Department Chair Department of Computer
Science and Engineering University of Notre Dame, USA
2) Dr. Edward Higgs
History Department
University of Essex, UK
http://www.essex.ac.uk/history/staff/higgs.shtm
We invite papers that discuss the impact of technologies used in the management of identity, and the use of personal information with information and communication technologies. We welcome contributions ranging across different disciplinary areas, reflecting the broad nature of the topic with its interwoven concerns of law, technology, and information systems alongside other social, political and management issues.
Accepted papers will be considered for publication in Identity in the Information Society Journal (IDIS). Following the workshop, revised versions of the papers presented will undergo peer review to determine their suitability to be published in IDIS.
Important dates:
Submission of papers (4000-6000 words): 9 April 2009
Notification to authors: 1 May 2009
Identity in the Information Society Workshop: 5 June 2009
Submission of revised papers to IDIS Journal: 6th July 2009

Call for Papers - Information and Software Technology (IST)
Special Issue on
Studying Work Practices in Global Software Engineering
http://www.idc.ul.ie/gsd/IST_Special_Issue_SWP.html
Submission Desdline: June 15th, 2009
Guest editors:
- Gabriela Avram, Interaction Design Centre, University of Limerick, Ireland
- Volker Wulf, University of Siegen and Fraunhofer Institute for Applied
Information Technology, Germany
Background and rationale
Software development is increasingly distributed across geographical,
political, social, and cultural boundaries. Enterprises that wish to
take advantage of globalization require innovative techniques, tools,
and practices to overcome the various difficulties of organizing and
managing globally distributed software development.
The field of Global Software Engineering (GSE) or Global Software
Development (GSD), as it is sometimes called, has emerged as a
transdisciplinary research arena bringing together software engineers
as well as social scientists and organization theorists involved in
examining various aspects of how globally distributed software teams
function. However, while many experimental studies on problem-solving
in teams have been performed, as well as interview studies with
management referring to problems in distributed coordination and
management, extensive participative field study material on actual
workplace practices is relatively meagre. Thus, despite of occasional
empirical studies of distributed software development activities over
the years there is still a dearth of well-designed studies in
Information Systems, Software Engineering and CSCW that provide good
examples of field research in the area.
Goals and objective
The purpose of this special issue is to examine practices of global
software engineering and to reflect upon the strengths and limitations
of empirical research methods being deployed in the field. Methods are
not simply techniques to be chosen and deployed at will, but are
constructed from particular conceptual worldviews, and entail
theoretical commitments. Actual use of methods also requires training
and sensitivity to the local situation. These issues are often not
adequately dealt with before the researcher enters the field.
In order to illustrate this topic in a concrete fashion, we are
soliciting papers from researchers who are actively engaged in
empirical studies of GSE and wish to reflect on their empirical
findings in relation to the methods applied. We are interested in
field studies of actual in situ practices of software engineers.
Potential topics for the papers (but not limited to these!) are:
* The strengths and limitations of particular empirical methods;
* The variety of ways in which methods can be used in practice,
grounded in specific GSE case studies;
* Studying the same topic in different environments;
* Gaining access to GSD field sites;
* Gaining access to digital artefacts; particular issues with gaining
access to source code;
* Approaches that go beyond a one-sided local view;
* Methods and tools for disentangling complex work trajectories and
situating artefacts;
* Methods for a quick familiarization with the context: participation
in social events, regular meetings, recruiting informants;
* Different roles the researcher could adopt;
* Dealing with micro-political conflicts in the field;
* Dealing with different languages and cultural issues;
* Roles of consultants vs. researchers: to what extent and in what
circumstances is a consulting role acceptable/desirable?
* Opportunities for engaging in a shared commitment with the
practitioners in order to identify potentials for change and conjoint
learning (e.g. concept of "business ethnography");
* Shortcomings and benefits of exploratory and evolutionary research
designs compared to more statistical approaches with predefined
hypotheses (i.e., why is it important for the GSD community to take
into account this kind of research instead of doing experiments and
such?),
* Using student groups as proxies in GSE studies.
Submission information
Authors are invited to submit papers on their field study research,
providing an account of the rationale for the choice of research
method(s) being used, showing how these relate to the research
questions being examined, and interesting findings attained by using
the method.
Papers should conform to the IST Elsevier format and be submitted as PDF
files.
