Workshop on Domain Engineering
In Conjunction with CAiSE09
June 9th, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
http://www.bgu.ac.il/~sturm/DE@CAiSE09/
Domain Engineering is an engineering discipline concerned with building
reusable assets, such as specification sets, patterns, and components, in
specific domains. A domain in this context can be defined as an area of
knowledge that uses common concepts for describing phenomena,
requirements, problems, capabilities, and solutions. The purpose of domain
engineering is to identify, model, construct, catalog, and disseminate
artifacts that represent the commonalities and differences within a
domain. Although applicable to different engineering disciplines, domain
engineering methods has been recently receiving special attention in the
information systems era. Some of the reasons for this interest are the
increasing variability of applications, the need to obtain and share
expertise in different, evolving domains, and the trend towards reusing IS
artifacts and knowledge about them.
Domain engineering addresses two main layers: the domain layer, which
deals with the representation of domain elements, and the application
layer, which deals with information systems artifacts related to the
domain. More specifically, information systems applications, their
components, and their descriptions are included in the application layer,
whereas their common and variable characteristics, as can be described,
for example, by ontologies or emerging standards, are generalized and
presented in the domain layer.
Similarly to information systems engineering, domain engineering includes
three main activities: domain analysis, domain design, and domain
implementation, which are carried out in the domain layer. However, domain
engineering also supports inter-layer activities, namely interactions that
exist between the domain and application layers. Specifically, domain
layer artifacts may be used for creation and validation of the
specifications of application layer artifacts, while applications may be
generalized into domain artifacts in a process of knowledge elicitation.
Domain engineering as a discipline has practical significance as it deals
with methods and techniques that may help reduce time-to-market, product
cost, and projects risks on one hand, and improve product quality and
performance on the other hand.
The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers and
practitioners in the area of domain engineering in order to define the
topic, identify possible points of synergy, common problems and solutions,
and discuss visions for the future of the area. In particular, the
workshop will focus on the interaction between information systems
engineering and domain engineering.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
· Conceptual foundations of domain engineering
· Methods and techniques to support domain engineering
· Ontology engineering
· Development and management of domain assets
· Domain-driven requirements engineering
· Application derivation (i.e., how to use domain artifacts in the
application layer)
· Variability management
· Domain engineering techniques in support of reuse, validation,
and knowledge management
· Theoretical and empirical evaluation of domain engineering
methods and techniques
· Case studies and practice reports related to domain engineering
Submission Guidelines
Prospective workshop participants are invited to submit a paper related to
the purpose of the workshop. The workshop will accept three types of
submissions:
1. Completed Research this type of papers should include evidence
to support the contribution (e.g. in the form of data analysis, proof of
concept, or case studies) and discussion on research findings and their
theoretical and practical significance. The paper should not exceed 5,000
words (excluding references and appendices). Accepted completed research
papers will be allocated 30 minutes for presentation (including questions
& answers) during the workshop.
2. Research-In-Progress this type of papers can report on research
that is under way with preliminary results available at the time of the
conference. The paper should not exceed 2,500 words (excluding references
and appendices). Accepted research-in-progress papers will be allocated 15
minutes for presentation (including questions & answers) during the
workshop.
3. Position papers this type of papers can include lucid and
well-supported statements and suggestions on domain engineering, e.g.,
directions for the discipline, open questions, criticism on the
state-of-the-art, and novel approaches. Accepted position papers will be
allocated 15 minutes for presentation (including questions & answers)
during the workshop.
All three types of papers may refer to theoretical and/or practical
issues.
Papers should be written in Springer LNCS style (see
http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html for details). The paper type
(completed research, research-in-progress, or a position paper) should
explicitly be indicated after the paper title. In addition, the paper
abstract should not be longer than 150 words. As the workshop will apply
double-blind reviews process, the papers should not indicate their
authors. Papers should be submitted through the on-line system at
http://www.bgu.ac.il/~sturm/DE@CAiSE09/DE_ CAiSE09_Submission.htm.
Publication
The paper selection will be based upon the relevance of a paper to the
main topics, on its quality and on the potential to stimulate discussion
in the workshop. Accepted papers will be published in the online
CAiSE'2009 workshop proceedings. In addition, authors of some selected
papers will be asked to consider submitting revised version of the papers
as chapters in a book on Domain Engineering to be edited by the workshop
co-chairs and published by Springer.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INTELLIGENT NETWORKING AND COLLABORATIVE
SYSTEMS (INCoS 2009).
November 4-6, 2009
Open University of Catalonia
Barcelona, Spain
http://www.uoc.edu/symposia/incos2009
Submission deadline: **June 25, 2009**
CONFERENCE SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES
With the fast development of the Internet, we are experiencing a shift
from the traditional sharing of information and applications as the
main purpose of the Web to an emergent paradigm, which locates people
at the very center of networks and exploits the value of people's
connections and relations. Web 2.0 has come to play a major role in
this context by enabling a new generation of social networks and
web-based communities and dramatically changing the way we use and
interact with the Web. Social network analysis is also a rapidly
growing field to investigate the dynamics and structure of intelligent
Web-based networking and collaborative systems.
Virtual campuses and organizations strongly leverage intelligent
networking and collaborative systems by a great variety of formal and
informal electronic relations, such as business-to-business,
peer-to-peer and many types of online collaborative learning
interactions. This has resulted in entangled systems that need to be
managed efficiently and in an autonomous way. In addition, latest and
powerful technologies based on Grid and Wireless infrastructure as
well as Cloud computing are currently enhancing collaborative and
networking applications a great deal but also facing new issues and
challenges. Well-known social networks lack of knowledge management
and adaptive solutions and the information shared among peers is
rather static. Virtual communities of practice also provide poorly
interactive solutions and lack of full support for organization,
management, mobility and security.
This conference covers the latest advances in intelligence social
networks and collaborative systems that lead to gain competitive
advantages in business and academia scenarios. The ultimate aim is to
stimulate research that will lead to the creation of responsive
environments for networking and, at longer-term, the development of
adaptive, secure, mobile, and intuitive intelligent systems for
collaborative work and learning. Industry and academic researchers,
professionals and practitioners are invited to exchange their
experiences and present their ideas in this field.
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Submitted papers should be original and contain contributions of
theoretical, experimental or application nature, or be unique
experience reports. Papers must be submitted no later than June 25th,
2009 and electronic submission in PDF is required. The page limit for
a Track paper is 8 pages. Workshop and Special Session papers
describing novel research visions, work-in-progress or less mature
results are limited to 6 pages. The PhD Forum is an opportunity for
PhD students to present their ongoing dissertation and to discuss
their research with experts in academia and industry. The page limit
for PhD Forum papers is 4 pages. Finally, Poster sessions provide an
excellent possibility for authors to present in an informal and
interactive way their original and unpublished work that demonstrates
current research about the conference topics. The page limit for
Poster papers is 2 pages. All submissions should be in the IEEE 8.5
two-column format. Papers should contain up to 5 keywords. Papers will
be evaluated for originality, significance, clarity, and soundness,
and will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers.
It is assumed that all accepted manuscripts would be presented at the
conference. All accepted papers must be accompanied by a full paid
registration to appear in the proceedings. All full papers are to be
submitted in PDF electronically via the conference web site.
Proceedings of the INCoS 2009 conference will be published by IEEE
Computer Society Press. Selected papers will be published in several

Call for Position Papers (1-4 pages)
Deadline: March 19th

4 page abstracts can enter a fast-track submission with credited reviews to
Mobile Response 2009 (see www.mobile-response.org)
--- INTRODUCTION ---
Many mobile ICT systems for emergency response look nice on slides or when
demonstrated at fairs. But looking at them many people including prospective
users get an uneasy feeling about actually using them during an emergency.
Firefighters may wonder whether they really want to trust their lives to
some
new device and aid workers may wonder whether they really want to take some
new system half way around the world to some natural disaster location out
of
electricity and spare parts but abundant with rain and people in need of
immediate support.
We believe that these concerns are mostly well justified. Addressing them
requires covering two distinct aspects. First, the technologies and designs
must match the actual requirements of the fields. Given the diverse and
extreme nature of many emergency response operations this is already
surprisingly difficult to achieve. Second, even systems that match the
requirements of the field still have to earn the acceptance of their users
to
use them efficiently, effectively and with informed confidence.
Understandably, emergency workers are particularly reluctant about adopting
new systems because they have to rely on them for the effectiveness of their
support efforts or even their own lives.
Essentially, this challenge is the same whenever designing tools to support
some non-trivial work process. The particularity of supporting emergency
response with mobile ICT is that the requirements and constraints of the
domain are especially hard to study and understand and that in terms of both
the products and the process of design very specific solutions are required.
--- WORKSHOP ---
What we would like to offer with this workshop is an opportunity for
emergency
response practitioners as well as researchers and developers of mobile ICT
to
exchange their experiences with the challenges of creating mobile ICT for
emergencies outlined above.
As an inspiration and focus for the discussion here are four dimensions of
these challenges with related questions for which we invite participants to
submit position papers on case studies, approaches, methods and techniques,
recommendations and questions, technological concepts, system design,
and core technology components:
Rough and dirty
- How to create and deal with realistic usage conditions
when testing ICT prototypes for emergency situations?
- How to design and build robust systems?
Tough and stressful:
- How to create, assess and handle realistic psychological conditions
when studying activities and behavior in simulated emergency situations
such as trials or exercises?
- How to design services and interfaces for users in high stress situations?
Complex and confusing:
- How to observe and handle activities and behavior in large-scale emergency
situations with many actors in a large area?
- How to design systems that reduce complexity and avoid information
overload?
Trained and cautious:
- How to make emergency professionals who rely on their current familiar
equipment
effectively use and assess innovative technologies during field trials?
- How to design innovative systems that deserve and effectively receive
trust and
that are highly usable by both domain experts and relatively novice users?
During the workshop, each participant will have time to give a presentation
of 10-15 minutes. In order to fuel the exchange of experiences and
discussion we ask all presenters to focus on contributing to one or more of
the questions above by either refining them, formulating a hyopthesis, or
suggesting an answer and ideally by describing in concrete terms an
experience they had or studied of using or designing mobile ICT for
emergencies.
