Student Satisfaction and Learning Outcomes in E-Learning: An Introduction
to Empirical Research
A book edited by Sean Eom, Southeast Missouri State University
and J.B. Arbaugh, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh
To be published by IGI Global:
http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=740
Introduction
Tremendous advances in information technology and the changing demographic
profile of the student populations have allowed colleges and universities
to offer Internet-based courses as a way to meet the ever-increasing
demand for higher and continuing education. Consequently, colleges and
universities worldwide are increasingly offering online courses and
complete online degree programs.
In the early online learning systems developmental stage, the focus of
attention was placed on the technological dimensions of e-learning
systems. E-learning systems include learning management systems, course
management systems, and virtual learning environments. Using these
software systems, designing and implementing Web-based course delivery
systems may not be a bottleneck of the effective e-learning systems. There
are a wide range of free software and/or open source learning management
systems (e.g., eFront), and course management systems (e.g., Dokeos,
ILIAS, Moodle, etc.). Many well-known virtual learning environments are
available to facilitate the creation of virtual class rooms (e.g.,
Blackboard, WebCT, FirstClass, Desire2Learn, CyberExtension, It's
Learning, WebTrain, etc.).
Some universities have developed their own custom learning environments
for creating and managing e-learning systems. Furthermore, they have
spent heavily to constantly update their online instructional resources,
computer labs, and library holdings. Now it is very much evident that the
technology itself may not be an impediment anymore. The research focus of
e-learning systems has turned to the human dimension of the e-learning
systems. The distance learning system can be viewed as having several
human/non-human entities interacting together via computer-based
instructional systems to achieve the goals of education, including
perceived learning outcomes and student satisfaction. Unfortunately, most
institutions have paid less attention to study the factors that influence
online student satisfaction or learning outcomes. Over the past half
decade, we have seen increasing empirical research in regard to the
factors that contribute to the success of online course delivery systems.
Objectives
The primary objective of this book is to investigate the determinants of
students? perceived e-learning outcomes and satisfaction. We present an
integrated overall view of online learning systems from students?
perception. This book introduces a research model that consists of three
subsystems (human dimension, design dimension, non-human dimension, and
outcomes of the online course delivery system). Users of the term ?online
course? generally consider such a course to be one that is delivered at
least partially via the Internet. However, the term is not necessarily
synonymous with ?Web-based course?. Courses have been taught on the
Internet entirely without use of the Web. Courses taught entirely by
e-mail, for example, can be richly interactive without using a single Web
page. However, HTTP?s enormous capacity to meaningfully link documents,
coupled with modern Web browsers? ability to provide easily-accessible,
graphically rich interactive environments, have made the Web the preferred
mode for delivery of instruction on the Internet. Online courses may be
synchronous (interaction occurs according to an explicit schedule, as in a
scheduled chat session) or asynchronous (the timing of interaction is
largely left up to the participants, as in posts to a discussion forum) or
a mix; the degree of synchronicity is not directly relevant to this study.
Many factors can affect the perceived satisfaction and learning outcome of
the students who take Web-based courses. The distance learning system can
be viewed as having several human entities interacting together via
computer-based instructional systems to achieve the goals of the system.
Several recent studies have contributed to reforming those variables and
developing a new research model (i. e. Alavi& Leidner, 2001; Arbaugh,
2005; Eom, Wen,& Ashill, 2006; Piccoli, Ahmad,& Ives, 2001; Simmering,
Posey,& Piccoli, 2009; Wan, Wang,& Haggerty, 2008). The literature
survey focuses on those variables that might affect the outcome of
Web-based course such as the perceived student satisfaction and learning
outcome. User satisfaction is the overall measure of the student?s
perceived level of fulfillment in the online course. There is much
research seeking to identify the factors that contribute to the success of
online course delivery systems. All of these studies seem to agree that
these two independent variables measure the effectiveness of online
education systems.
This book aims to identify the following key factors:
1. What are the measures of success in online course delivery systems?
2. What are the important factors that contribute to the success measures?
3. What are the relationships between the measure of success and the
contributing factors?
Target Audience
This book is for practitioners, managers, researchers, and graduate
students in virtually every field of study. Application areas of
e-learning are not limited to a specific academic area. E-learning is a
worldwide perpetual trend that is being applied to educate employees of
non-academic organizations such as governments, profit or non-profit
organizations. Needless to say, libraries in university, profit and
non-profit organizations around the world will be potential customers.

CALL FOR PAPERS
AI Space Odyssey, Special Issue of IEEE Intelligent Systems
Submissions due for review: 19 February 2010
Publication date: September/October 2010
http://www.computer.org/portal/web/computingnow/iscfp5
==============================================================
IEEE Intelligent Systems seeks original papers describing research on AI in
Space. This topic has been the focus of earlier special issues, but this call
is interested in a glimpse of the future from our standpoint in 2010, and hence
the theme AI Space Odyssey.
In anticipation of long-duration space exploration missions to the Moon and
Mars, likely by many nations, we are looking for papers describing how AI has
made missions possible and will help make missions a success. Whereas in the
1980s and 1990s, researchers saw AI as a panacea for intelligent autonomous
systems, the AI technology used today in space applications is often regarded
differently. The editors of this special issue solicit papers that describe new
and novel use of AI technology for space applications.
Papers may cover a variety of topics, listed here in no particular order:
* semantics, ontologies, and knowledge representation;
* pattern recognition and scientific discovery;
* Intelligent System-Health Management (ISHM);
* teleoperation and telerobotics;
* planning, scheduling, constraint satisfaction;
* adjustable autonomy;
* agent-based and multiagent systems;
* machine learning;
* procedure-execution monitoring and aiding;
* natural language processing and dialogue systems;
* decision support; and
* history of AI applications in astronautics and space exploration.
In addition, the special issue will consider original papers on innovative,
knowledge-based approaches to complex implementation challenges such as
* AI-driven simulations, virtual reality, virtual worlds and games for
engineering, operations, management, training, and so on;
* software engineering, development, and verification and validation
approaches for high-reliability autonomy;
* innovative approaches to security issues in autonomous software
systems;
* software life-cycle issues with respect to very long-duration (10+
year) missions;
* decision and workflow support systems for planetary exploration and
extra-vehicular activities;
* AI-driven robotics and approaches for human-robot teamwork;
* Smart sensor systems for situational awareness; and
* ubiquitous computing environments.
Submission Guidelines
Papers should situate the work within the field of AI, cite related work, and
indicate the innovative aspects of the work and its direct contribution to the
special challenges of space missions. We will not accept any paper that, at the
time of submission, is under review for or has already been published or
accepted for publication in a journal or another conference. All papers will
undergo peer and editorial review. Submissions should present original reports
of substantive new work and should be 3,500 to 7,500 words (counting a standard
figure or table as 200 words) and should follow the magazines style and
presentation guidelines (see www.computer.org/intelligent/author.htm).
References should be limited to 10 citations. To submit a manuscript, access
the IEEE Computer Society Web-based system, Manuscript Central, at
https://mc.manuscriptcentral/cs-ieee.

The International Conference on Ambient Systems, Networks and Technologies
(ANT-2010) is a leading international conference which provides an
international forum for researchers, developers and practitioners from
academia,
industry, and government to address research challenges and to present and
discuss research ideas, developments and experiences related to the
ambient
systems infrastructure, models, and technologies.
The general aim of ambient systems is to provide an environment wherein
computing devices exist anywhere and everywhere. In such systems mobile
and
embedded computing devices form ad hoc collaboration using different
communication networks (e.g., wireless networks, RFID, etc) in order to
share and
exchange information and provide services. Ambient systems pose new
research challenges due to the open and unreliable nature of the
environment and the
complexity and heterogeneity of the computing devices and the underlying
communication networks. These characteristics challenge traditional
techniques and
demand new ways of approaching the problems related to the ambient
systems.

Betreff: [AISWorld] CFP AMCIS2010 Green IS Minitrack
Datum: Mon, 21 Dec 2009 14:08:20 +1100
Von: Helen Hasan <hasan(a)uow.edu.au>

16th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS 2010) August 12 -
15, 2010. We invite you to join us in
the most unique location that AIS has ever held a conference. AMCIS 2010
will be in Lima, Peru.
Track: Emerging Issues in IS Research
Minitrack: Sustainability, Information Systems and Technology:
Emerging Opportunities for Information Systems to improve sustainability
within organizations
Description:
The continuous growth of the World population and the increasing demand
for higher living standards has lead to the exploitation of natural
resources and the pollution of the environment on an unprecedented
scale. Shareholders, regulatory bodies, customers and employees are
increasingly demanding firms to adopt a systematic approach to the
sustainable management of increasingly scarce resources while at the
same time reducing their impact on the environment. Environmental
management is more than ever an imperative in industrial domains such as
manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, forestry and IS & IT, which has
become pervasive throughout entire organizational functions and processes.
In the emerging fields of Green IS and Green IT, a figure of 2 percent
is often quoted as the percentage of environmentally harmful emissions
attributed to the use of IT and the IT industry. The term 'Green IT' is
now part of our vocabulary recognizing the problem of IT as a polluter
and the responsibility of IT professionals to do something about it. On
the other hand there is a counter argument that in IT and IS we have the
potential and opportunity to positively influence the global
environmental future -- in other words, develop Green IS to reduce the
other 98%. This sentiment is reflected in a chapters developed as part
of the Global Text Project. Here the term 'Green IT' is distinguished
from 'Green IS'. 'Green IT' is seen to focus mainly on energy efficiency
and equipment utilization. 'Green IS', in contrast, refers to "the
design and implementation of information systems that contribute to
sustainability of business processes". Green IS as so described should
therefore have a greater potential than Green IT because it tackles a
much larger problem. IS can play a key role in making organizations more
sustainable while at the same reducing the negative environmental impact
of IS and associated IT infrastructure. Hence this mini track will
focus on the role that IS can play in these two interrelated issues of
Green IT and Green IS.
The purpose of this mini-track is to advance theoretical and practical
knowledge in this emerging domain and to
gain a better understanding of current industry initiatives and academic
research being conducted on the role of
IS in business sustainability. Hence submissions of high quality papers
that report on empirical research and
case studies including but not limited to the topics available at
