2nd Call for Papers
Wikis, Blogs, Bookmarking Tools - Mining the Web 2.0 (WBBTMine'08)
http://www.kde.cs.uni-kassel.de/ws/wbbtmine2008/
Workshop at ECML/PKDD 2008 - Antwerp, Belgium, 15 Sept. 2008
Important dates

* Author Notification: July 16
* Camera Ready Papers: August 14
* Workshop: September 15
Overview
========
Many Web 2.0 applications have rapidly emerged on the Web. This
indicates a currently ongoing grass-root creation of knowledge spaces
on the Web. The reason for the success of cooperative Web tools (wikis,
blogs, etc.) and resource sharing (social bookmark systems, photo
sharing systems, etc.) lies mainly in the fact that no specific skills
are needed for publishing and editing. Web 2.0 applications are a very
interesting application area for data mining. Unlike in traditional data
mining scenarios, data does not emerge from a small number of
(heterogeneous) data sources, but virtually from millions of different
sources. As there is only minimal coordination, these sources can
overlap or diverge in many ways. These fundamental features of
heterogeneity and independence, known from collaborative filtering, are
not limited to ratings and recommendations but extend to arbitrary
complex data and data mining tasks. Steps into this new and exciting
application area are the analysis of this new data, then the adaptation
of well-known data mining and machine learning algorithm and finally
the development of new algorithms.
As research analyzing Wikis, Blogs and the structure underlying Social
Bookmarks matures (and Web 2.0 workshops and conferences begin to
proliferate), this workshop seeks contributions focused on
state-of-the-art data mining algorithm and machine learning methods on
Web 2.0 data. Papers describing new algorithms working on Web 2.0 data
or work discussing aspects on the intersection of Web 2.0 and Knowledge
Discovery are also highly welcome. In short, we want to accelerate the
process of identifying the power of advanced data mining operating on
Web 2.0 data, as well as the process of advancing data mining through
lessons learned in analyzing these new data.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue of the International Journal of Technology Management (SSCI,
SCIE) on The Internet Channel Affecting Service Sciences.
The Internet channel has much affected most business companies since it
has been adopted as a communication, trading medium. Those companies which
are willing to adopt the Internet channel have enjoyed revenue increases,
while those which are not have suffered revenue losses. The objective of
this special issue is to highlight this particular aspect of the
relationship between the Internet channel and the service sciences.
Nowadays the service industry is the most rapidly expanding part of the
economies in the United States, and in European and some Asian countries.
In the United States, services account for about $7.1 trillion of the U.S.
gross domestic product (U.S. Census Bureau, 2007). The service sciences
try to understand the phenomena which have been happened in the service
industry. In this context, maintaining the Internet channel effectively
and efficiently is a very important issue to both service managers and
service scientists who are strongly interrelated with the Internet channel
productivity.
This special issue of IJTM seeks original articles on "The Internet
channel affecting service sciences." We prefer case studies of implemented
systems or descriptions of innovative technologies, highlighting actual
usage results. We also invite papers that focus on sociological approaches
for evaluation methods.
Appropriate topics include:
o. Internet channel affecting service sciences for the service industry
o. Internet channel conflicts and resolutions in the service science

CALL FOR PAPERS
Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society (JICES)

ISSN: 1477-996X
Special Issue on 'ICTs and Social Inclusion'
Guest Editors: Cathy Urquhart, Information Systems and Operations Management, University of Auckland Business School Yvonne Underhill-Sem, Centre for Development Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Auckland
The Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society is an international, refereed journal that aims to provide interdisciplinary perspectives on the social and ethical impacts of new media and information and communication technologies on society, organisations, the environment and individuals.
While information and communication technologies (ICTs) may appear ubiquitous in the 21st century, access to those ICTs is far from universal. The term 'social inclusion' has been suggested as a more positive way of approaching this digital divide (Warschauer 2003). Social inclusion is defined as 'participation in the determination of both individual and collective life chances' (Stewart 2000). Thus there is more to social inclusion than equal access to resources, and it should be recognised that even wealthy individuals may be excluded because of discrimination based on gender, race, sexual preference or disability, or political persecution (Warschauer 2003). For instance, there is evidence that African Americans are socially excluded from participation in ICTs despite the US being a so-called developed country, and this is true of many poorer communities in developed countries. In developing countries, there is evidence that ICT initiatives tend to favour those who already have access to ICTs through a superior education (Warschauer 2003). It is inceasingly important to locate ICTs within the particular social conditions because as with all technologies, they are an integral aspect of socio-political, economic and cultural development (Hufkin and Huyer 2006).
ICTs can play a crucial role in shaping collective life chances, for instance the access to information that ICTs offer can help poverty reduction. ICTs also facilitate the building of human and social capital through increasing flows of information, and building on knowledge and human capacity for poverty reduction (Urquhart, Liyanage and Kah 2007). In addition to their empowering possibilities, ICTs have also inhibiting tendencies especially when information and communication is not integrated within development strategies. These contradictory tendencies invite more careful theoretically nuanced analysis of ICTs and social inclusion.
If the position of social inclusion implies equal access to technology for all, then the sustainability of ICTs in terms of how they are designed, used and disposed of is also of relevance. E-waste is a problem in some developing countries, and can be seen to be contrary to the social inclusion ideal as some countries end up processing other countries -waste. Such actions are likely to have generational effects, socially and ecologically. Social inclusion by implication has a concern with equity and social justice - and environmental problems like global warming do not respect political boundaries. For these reasons, we also invite papers that look at novel perspectives on ICTs and environmental issues.
Possible topics for papers include but are not limited to:
* Assessing government policies and initiatives that counter social exclusion in ICTs
* Economic perspectives on access to ICTs such as government policy and ICT infrastructure
* Access, ownership and control of ICTs (including the micro and macro politics of artefacts)
* Social, spatial and philosophical dimensions of ICTs and social inclusion
* ICTs and social inclusion as a result of gender inequality, racial discrimination and other aspects of social exclusion
* The role of human and social capital in effective access and use of ICTs
* The role of virtual communities in promoting social inclusion
* Unintended consequences of ICT for social inclusion
* ICTs and e-government
* The role of ICTs in economic development.
* How ICTs are reconfiguring traditional notions of citizenship and participation.
* Sustainable ICTs and ICTs which assist with problems of climate change and environmental monitoring.
Please feel free to contact Cathy Urquhart on c.urquhart(a)auckland.ac.nz or Yvonne Underhill-Sem on y.underhill-sem(a)auckland.ac.nz with any queries on submission. See http://www.emeraldinsight.com/info/journals/jices/notes.jsp for guidelines on submission. The normal length requirement is 7000 words but we are also inviting shorter submissions on cutting edge research that is in an earlier stage of development. The papers should be emailed to both guest editors.

Special Issue on "Social Networks and Web 2.0"
BACKGROUND
Web 2.0 has enabled a new generation of Web-based communities, social
networks, wikis, hosted services and folksonomies to facilitate
collaboration and sharing among users. These are characterized by open
communication, decentralization of authority, and freedom to share and
reuse. Web 2.0 refers to a set of collaborative applications and
mashups with a social approach to generating and distributing Web
content. Web 2.0 applications provide a basis for social networks,
where users share and filter content, collaborate, seek information, and
interact on the Web.
ECRA's Social Networks and Web 2.0 special issue provides a forum both
for describing and evaluating innovative Web 2.0 technologies, along
with novel strategies and methods for building and managing such
applications. We welcome theoretical, analytical, case study, empirical,
and other methodological works that support contributions relating to
specific classes of applications, as well as to cross-disciplinary and
cross-paradigm research. We are especially interested in showcasing
research that has the potential to create strong individual,
organization, industry, economic and social impacts and transformations.
Research contributions involving joint industry-academic research teams
are especially welcome, as they provide a basis to promote new research
that is simultaneously rigorous and relevant.

should be submitted online at ees.elsevier.com/ecra/ by the date of
initial submission, double-spaced in 11 or 12-point fonts, with no more
than 32 pages, inclusive of all references, figures and tables. As they
upload their papers, authors should make sure to select the correct
special issue. Papers should be submitted so authors' names are not
revealed. Only original and unpublished papers will be considered.
The guest editors of ECRA are committed to a two-month turnaround on the
first round of reviews for the Web 2.0 and Social Network special issue.
We will empanel a special issue editorial board for this purpose.
Indications of willingness to participate from interested researchers
are welcome. The guest editors will respond with first-round review
comments on all papers no later than August 15, 2008. All final
decisions will be made no later than the second round of review by
December 15, 2008, although some decisions will be made earlier, as

The 2nd International Workshop on the Induction of Process Models (IPM08)
at ECML PKDD 2008, 15 September 2008, Antwerp, Belgium
Call for Papers
While the worlds of science and business typically meet in the presence of
a profitable scheme, individuals from both environments have interests in
analyzing complex data about dynamic systems. Whether motivated by a drive
to increase system efficiency or to understand nature, their shared goal
leads to a shared focus on the underlying causal processes that explain or
produce observed phenomena. To this end, researchers construct models from
data derived from observed system behavior and background knowledge about
the candidate processes. Traditional literature on regression, time-series
analysis, and data mining produces descriptive models that may reproduce
the observed data but cannot explain the principal dynamics. Therefore,
researchers are called to develop methods that capture complex temporal
and spatial relationships in terms of domain knowledge (e.g., relevant
scientific or business concepts) and that construct these explanatory
process models.
One can develop both qualitative and quantitative process models depending
on their intended use. Qualitative approaches to model induction include
learning state transition models, Petri-nets, and learning from
(time-stamped) event sequences and event logs. Qualitative representations
are particularly interesting for business applications that aim to
discover business processes from data. Examples of event logs include
process data generated by administrative services, health care data about
patient handling, and logs of workflow tools. In comparison, quantitative
approaches to model construction are grounded in standard mathematical
representations (e.g., systems of differential equations). Quantitative
representations are common in scientific applications, and are especially
prominent in the environmental and biological sciences that deal with
complex, natural systems. Notably, the business and scientific worlds are
not separated by an interest in the qualitative or quantitative emphasis
of their models. Moreover, researchers working in these domains would
benefit from approaches that integrate the qualitative and quantitative
aspects of system behavior.
In this workshop, we aim to attract researchers with an interest in
inductive process modeling in different formalisms including Petri nets,
qualitative and quantitative processes, differential equations, episode
rules, logical rules, and others. Also, although we have emphasized the
business and scientific domains, we are open to any application of process
model induction. A non-exhaustive list of topics includes:
* learning structured process models such as Petri net or process algebra
models from event logs
* modeling techniques for describing the structure of event data such as
Markov models
* learning differential equation models
* learning in qualitative reasoning representations
* learning in temporal logic
* learning logical models of state transitions (e.g., by recursive
clauses)
* learning from time-stamped event sequences (e.g., episode rules)
* learning from large databases of trajectories
* connectionist/subsymbolic models of sequence learning
* scalable and robust process mining algorithms and techniques
* process mining evaluation: metrics, approaches and frameworks
* the adaption of web mining, text mining, temporal data mining approaches
for inductive process modeling
* particularly welcome are case studies and applications (e.g., from
business, the environmental, medical or biological sciences) and
discussions of the lessons learned from such case studies
* and papers identifying open problems such as dealing with missing and/or
noisy data, regularization, incorporating background/domain knowledge,
efficient search through the space of candidate process-based models, ...
Inductive process modeling and process mining are challenging research
areas that have the potential to grow in importance like graph or sequence
mining. On the other hand, process mining can benefit from the input of
related fields in data mining and machine learning, such as temporal data
mining, episodes and web log mining. In the ECML/PKDD 2008 workshop on the
induction of process models, we intend to bring scientists together and
actively identify common research threads, define open problems, and
develop collaborative contacts. It should provide a more relaxed
atmosphere than a conference setting where participants are encouraged to
ask clarifying questions throughout the talks and to move past
jargon-induced barriers.
Submission
Extended abstracts (two pages in Springer format) should be submitted by
June 16th, 2008. Final versions of accepted papers will appear in the
informal ECML/PKDD workshop proceedings and will be made available on the
workshop website before the workshop takes place. Submission implies the
willingness of at least one of the authors to register and present the
paper. Authors of accepted abstracts will be asked to submit a short 4 to
8 page paper in PDF format (following the Springer LNCS guidelines for
preparing manuscripts) that describes their research in more detail.

Co-Chairs, CIST
Call For Papers - Conference on Information Systems and Technology 2008
October 11-12th, Washington DC
INFORMS Annual Conference
Co-chairs: Anand Gopal (Univ of Maryland), Syam Menon (UT Dallas) and Siva
Viswanathan (Univ of Maryland)
Information systems research has progressed in the last decade beyond the
confines of what was once considered a field characterized by hardware,
software and telecommunication systems. IS research today is more suitably
positioned at the confluence of several research traditions and
methodologies, borrowing from and contributing to reference disciplines
such as computer science, economics, sociology, marketing, operations
management, and strategy. This cross-disciplinary perspective places IS
researchers in a unique position to be able to examine novel and emerging
phenomena and the rapid changes brought about by technology. The focus of
this conference will be on examining emerging areas of interest that are
still at the periphery of IS research but are gaining prominence
rapidly. Extending the envelope of IS research to study these emerging
phenomena promises new theoretical and managerial insights. CIST 2008 is
intended to highlight this theme by bringing together scholars who have
leveraged and informed multiple and diverse disciplines to present their
ideas in topics such as:
Consumer behavior in mobile and digital environments
Digital Intermediaries and Sponsored Search Advertising
Social Networks and Web 2.0
IS in Healthcare
IT security and privacy
Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery
Software Engineering
Personalization Technologies
Intellectual Property, Copyrights, and DRM
Outsourcing and application service contracting
Software procurement, open source software, and open standards
IT in emerging economies and non-governmental organizations
Knowledge management, collaboration and boundary spanning
Online communities, and computer-mediated collaboration
The 2008 Conference on Information Systems and Technology will be held in
Washington D.C on October 11th and October 12th 2008. The conference
coincides with the INFORMS Annual Meeting, which will be held October 12
through 15 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel and Omni Shoreham Hotel.
