2008 Workshop on Secure Knowledge Management
(SKM 2008)
November 3-4, 2008, Richardson, TX, USA
URL: http://cs.utdallas.edu/skm2008
CALL FOR PAPERS
======================================================================
Knowledge management is the methodology for systematically gathering,
organizing, and disseminating information. It essentially consists of
processes and tools to effectively capture and share data as well as
use the knowledge of individuals within an organization. Knowledge
Management Systems (KMS) promote sharing information among employees
and should contain security features to prevent any unauthorized
access. Security is becoming a major issue revolving around KMS.
Security methods may include authentication or passwords, cryptography
programs, intrusion detection systems or access control systems.
Issues include insider threat (protecting from malicious insiders),
infrastructure protection (securing against subversion attacks) and
establishing correct policies and refinement and enforcement.
Furthermore KMS content is much more sensitive than raw data stored in
databases and issues of privacy also become important.
Since the attacks in 2001, many organizations, especially the US
government, have increased their concern about KMS. With the advent of
intranets and web-access, it is even more crucial to protect corporate
knowledge as numerous individuals now have access to the assets of a
corporation. Therefore, we need effective mechanisms for securing
data, information, and knowledge as well as the applications. The
proposed workshop in Secure Knowledge Management will help in raising
the awareness of academics and practitioners in this critical area of
research and develop important questions that need to be tackled by
the research community.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Secure Languages (Secure Knowledge Query Manipulation Language,
Security Assertion Markup Language, B2B Circles of Trust)
- Return of Investment on Secure Knowledge Systems
- Digital Rights Management (Digital Policy Management)
- Secure Content Management (Secure Content Management in
Authorized Domains, Secure Content Delivery, Content Trust Index)
- Knowledge Management for National Security (Securing and
Sharing What We Know: Privacy, Trust and Knowledge Management,
Identity Security Guarantee, Building Trust and Security in the B2B
Marketplace)
- Security and Privacy in Knowledge Management
- Wireless security in the context of Knowledge Management
The workshop will have a best paper award as judged by the program
committee.

FINDING THE REAL-WORLD VALUE IN VIRTUAL WORLDS: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES
Cutter IT Journal
San Murugesan, Guest Editor
Abstract Due: 19 June 2008
Articles Due: 31 July 2008
Virtual worlds are a hot topic now, thanks to the increased computing and
graphic capabilities of personal computers, high-speed Internet access, and
intense corporate interest in exploring and exploiting these worlds. These
3D, interactive Web environments are said to deliver an immersive experience
that is much richer than what we currently experience with the traditional
Web. So is the Web poised for its next major evolution? According to the
Association of Virtual Worlds, the answer is yes: "Virtual worlds represent
a major information and technological revolution in how we work, play, and
live."
It's true that virtual worlds are emerging as communal places for a wide
range of activities, including gaming, social networking, education and
training, marketing, and e-business. Major businesses and large marketers
have been using virtual worlds in innovative ways to appeal to the
hard-to-reach young consumers of the digital generation, who spend much of
their time using computers and mobile phones. The growing presence of
virtual worlds, including those specifically targeted at kids and teens, has
been drawing much attention from the media, the public, business, and
government.
As virtual worlds now begin to move from the fringe to the mainstream, there
is considerable excitement and hype surrounding the movement. A key question
is: what real value do virtual worlds present to users and businesses? While
the value may be obvious to some, there are several issues associated with
virtual worlds that cause varying degrees of anxiety among stakeholders.
These concerns -- which range from the technical (e.g., security) to the
moral and legal -- limit the potential of virtual worlds and hinder their
adoption.
Nevertheless, some argue, virtual worlds are here to stay. Indeed more
people -- from kids to teens to young adults -- are spending an increasing
amount of time in virtual worlds engaging in a variety of activities that
interest them, including playing games, communicating with a group of
friends, creating virtual artifacts, studying, undergoing training, renting
or purchasing land or buildings, buying virtual artifacts, and/or
establishing their businesses. According to some estimates,
multibillion-dollar opportunities might be there for the taking in the
virtual-world arena. Therefore, IT and non-IT businesses, IT professionals,
business executives, and entrepreneurs shouldn't dismiss virtual worlds as
simply another platform for online games targeted at young people. Instead,
they should examine and explore how they can exploit virtual worlds and
seize the opportunities these immersive environments present.
IT departments in many enterprises are now being asked to explore how their
organizations can embrace virtual worlds and create, deploy, regulate, and
monitor these virtual-world applications. Corporations and venture
capitalists are eager to invest in promising virtual-world technologies and
services. Major IT companies, startups, public relation companies,
marketers, consultancies, educational institutions, and individuals are all
trying to get a slice of the seemingly vast business potential that virtual
worlds offer. Several IT companies have begun developing virtual-world
applications, tools, and platforms.
The SEPTEMBER 2008 ISSUE OF CUTTER IT JOURNAL will explore this new space in
cyberspace. We will examine virtual worlds in terms of market opportunities,
strategic approaches, technological options, and the value and impact
virtual worlds will have in real world today and in the future.
TOPICS OF INTEREST MAY INCLUDE (but are not limited to) the following:
* Will virtual worlds truly be another breakthrough technology that affects
our personal, social, and professional lives, or will they be the next
bubble to burst?
* What value do virtual worlds provide? Why do virtual worlds draw so much
interest not only from users, but also from businesses, educational
institutions, and governments?
* How are virtual worlds currently being used? What is their real
potential?
* What opportunities do virtual worlds present to IT (and non-IT)
businesses and professionals, and how can we exploit those opportunities?
* What technologies support virtual worlds? What are suitable IT
architectures for large virtual worlds?
* Consider the key issues and challenges that virtual worlds present
(privacy, security, identity management, taxation, etc.). How can we address
them?
* What are the ongoing developments in this area, and what does the future
hold for virtual worlds? Can virtual worlds give rise to a new set of
applications?
* Will there be a much bigger revolution of business ideas and processes
with the emergence of immersive 3D Web environments?
* How can the performance and usability of virtual worlds be improved? What
virtual development strategy would you follow? Given the concerns about the
poor reliability and performance of some virtual worlds, how can you test
and evaluate a virtual-world application before deployment?
* What will be the economic and social impact of existing and emerging
virtual worlds? Does one's behavior and experience in a virtual world affect
one's real-world life?
* What have we learned so far by analyzing the successes and failures in
this space? What are the success factors?
* How can IT help in protecting privacy and intellectual property in
virtual worlds?
* Is virtual commerce (v-commerce) viable?
TO SUBMIT AN ARTICLE IDEA
Please respond to San Murugesan, san1[at]internode[dot]net, with a copy to
itjournal[at]cutter[dot]com, by 19 June 2008. Include an extended abstract
and a short article outline showing major discussion points.
ARTICLE DEADLINE
Accepted articles are due by 31 July 2008.
EDITORIAL GUIDELINES
Most Cutter IT Journal articles are approximately 2,500-3,500 words long,
plus whatever graphics are appropriate. If you have any other questions,
please do not hesitate to contact CITJ's Group Publisher, Christine
Generali, at cgenerali[at]cutter[dot]com or the Guest Editor,
san1[at]internode[dot]net. Editorial guidelines are available at
http://www.cutter.com/content-and-analysis/journals-and-reports/cutter-it-jo
urnal/edguide.html.
AUDIENCE
Typical readers of Cutter IT Journal range from CIOs and vice presidents of
software organizations to IT managers, directors, project leaders, and very
senior technical staff. Most work in fairly large organizations: Fortune 500
IT shops, large computer vendors (IBM, HP, etc.), and government agencies.
48% of our readership is outside of the US (15% from Canada, 14% Europe, 5%
Australia/NZ, 14% elsewhere). Please avoid introductory-level, tutorial
coverage of a topic. Assume you're writing for someone who has been in the
industry for 10 to 20 years, is very busy, and very impatient. Assume he or
she will be asking, "What's the point? What do I do with this information?"
Apply the "So what?" test to everything you write.
PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
We are pleased to offer Journal authors a year's complimentary subscription
and 10 copies of the issue in which they are published. In addition, we
occasionally pull excerpts, along with the author's bio, to include in our
weekly Cutter Edge e-mail bulletin, which reaches another 8,000 readers.
We'd also be pleased to quote you, or passages from your article, in Cutter
press releases.
If you plan to be speaking at industry conferences, we can arrange to make
copies of your article or the entire issue available for attendees of those
speaking engagements -- furthering your own promotional efforts.
ABOUT CUTTER IT JOURNAL
No other journal brings together so many cutting-edge thinkers, and lets
them speak so bluntly and frankly. We strive to maintain the Journal's
reputation as the "Harvard Business Review of IT." Our goal is to present

Background:
This interdisciplinary one-day workshop focuses on methods, processes, and
support of regulation formulation, formalisation, verification,
validation, and deployment in information systems engineering.
Business rules and external regulations are increasingly becoming
important in information systems engineering. Systems, processes and
services have to operate according to the rules, they have to be easily or
dynamically adaptable in case of changes, and the rules and regulations
have to be identifiable and traceable. This has strong implications on
the architecture, modeling, management, and execution frameworks of
enterprise systems. Typical areas of application are: Business Rules and
Business Processes (including Rule-based Architecture), Governance,
Compliance, Policies, Legal Systems, Taxation, Financial Services, IT
Governance, Security and Safety Regulations, (Medical) Protocols,
transport and E-business, ...
Who should attend:
Research and industry participants from the fields of Information Systems
and, in particular, IS Development, Business-IT Alignment, Requirements
Engineering, Enterprise and Information Architecture, Business rules,
Business Process Management, and Compliance. Through this
interdisciplinary workshop, we expect to encourage fruitful exchanges
between several scientific communities.

Call for Papers
Collocated with the 11th International Business Rules Forum, the 2008
International Symposium on Rule Interchange and Applications
(RuleML-2008) is
the second symposium (after last year's highly successful RuleML-2007 -
http://2007.ruleml.org/) devoted to work on practical distributed rule
technologies and rule-based applications which need language standards for
rules operating in the context of, e.g., the Semantic Web, Intelligent
Multi-
Agent Systems, Event-Driven Architectures and Service-Oriented Computing
Applications. The RuleML symposium is a new kind of event where the Web
Rules
and Logic community joins the established, practically oriented Forum of the
Business Rules community (http://www.businessrulesforum.com) to help cross-
fertilizing between Web and Business Logic technology.
The goal of RuleML-2008 is to bring together rule system providers,
representatives of, and participants in, rule standardization efforts (e.g.,
SBVR, RuleML, RIF, PRR, CL) and open source rules communities (e.g., jBoss
Rules, CLIPS/Jess, Prova, OO jDrew, Mandarax, XSB, XQuery),
practitioners and
technical experts, developers, users, and researchers. They will be offered
an exciting venue to exchange new ideas, practical developments and
experiences on issues pertinent to the interchange and application of rules
in open distributed environments such as the Web.
The Symposium gives emphasis on practical issues such as technical
contributions and show case demonstrations of effective, practical,
deployable rule-based technologies, rule interchange formats and
applications
as well as discussions of lessons learned that have to be taken into account
when employing rule-based technologies in distributed, (partially) open,
heterogeneous environments. We also welcome groundwork that helps to
build an
effective, practical, and deployable rule standard, improve rule technology,
provide better understanding of the integration and interchange of
rules, and
make the current generation of rule engines and rule technology more usable
for advanced Web and Service Oriented Architectures.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
RuleML-2008 Challenge
The RuleML-2008 Challenge is one of the highlights of RuleML-2008. It
addresses the system demonstration for practical use of rule technologies in
distributed and/or Web-based environments. The focus of the challenge is on
rule technologies (including rule languages and engines), interoperation and
interchange. The challenge offers participants the chance to demonstrate
their commercial and open source tools, use cases, and applications. Prizes
will be awarded to the two best applications. All accepted demos will be
presented in a special Challenge Session.

Introduction
For more than a decade now, firms in countries with appropriate
infrastructures in place have generally been able to exploit emerging
Internet technologies for business purposes. The diffusion process has
been very rapid. However, with regard to e-business adoption, several
studies have shown that firm size is an important factor in driving a
development in which small and medium-sized enterprises lag behind large
firms in their intent and decision to adopt.
Small and medium-sized enterprises are an important growth engine in the
global economy. Small and medium-sized enterprises account for a major
proportion of employment in the economy. For example, according to OECD,
90% of the firms in Europe are categorized as small. An increasingly
improved infrastructure of ICT enables and facilitates for the small and
medium-sized enterprise manager to turn to e-business. Given the promise
that e-business development holds for the small and medium-sized
enterprise manager, and although much has been written on e-commerce and
e-business in recent years, there is yet much work left to be done.
This special issue of the International Journal of Electronic Business
aims to stimulate the creation of academic papers focused on the study
of development of e-business in small and medium-sized enterprises,
ultimately advancing the understanding of how the process of adoption of
e-business evolves in the small business context. The special issue of
the International Journal of Electronic Business will provide an insight
on where we are now within the field including research overviews and
current state-of-the-art research and also at where we are heading by
proposing a future research agenda. Potential contributions may include:
* Papers investigating the process of adoption of e-business among
small and medium-sized enterprises
* Theoretical and conceptual papers that focus on the development of
e-business in small and medium-sized enterprises
* Case studies of both successful and unsuccessful e-business
development in small and medium-sized enterprises
* Methodologies for the study of e-business development in small and
medium-sized enterprises
* Papers that investigate the diffusion of e-business among small
and medium-sized enterprises
Some of the topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* E-business adoption and non-adoption among small and medium-sized
enterprises
* Drivers and barriers of e-business development in small and
medium-sized enterprises
* The role of external parties in e-business development in small
and medium-sized enterprises
* Post-adoption challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises
* E-business diffusion in small and medium-sized enterprises
* Region, sector or industry specific studies on e-business among
small and medium-sized enterprises
* Extent of e-business use among small and medium-sized enterprises

Call for Papers
3rd Workshop on Context Awareness and CBR
CaCoA'08 - Advanced Technologies for Ambient Intelligence
In conjunction with the 9th European Conference on Case Based Reasoning
September 1-4, 2008, Trier, Germany
Workshop Website: http://www.iis.uni-hildesheim.de/cacoa08
Conference: http://www.wi2.uni-trier.de/eccbr08/index.php
======================================================
Ambient Intelligence (AmI) solutions require context awareness (of both the
environment and user) to anticipate the humans' goals and needs to behave
proactively. Adaptivity and feedback learning are used to advance AmI in
order to make it smart and intelligent, while context-sensitive processing
takes more and more a key role in many modern intelligent IT applications
including context awareness. Context reasoning is also essential for
AmI, and
can be supported adequately by CBR techniques representing and manipulating
situated information. Moreover, demand-oriented and holistic solutions
require
taking into account relevant human aspects (e.g. social, economic or
ethical)
to avoid possible refusals of such systems.
This workshop will bring together industry and academic researchers and
scientists to study, understand, and explore the handling of context in
intelligent applications, with a particular focus on ambient
intelligence and
human-directed aspects. Besides contributed papers and invited talks, this
workshop will offer organized and open spaces for targeted discussions. The
workshop will explore (but is not limited to) the following topics along the
(pair wise) intersections of context awareness, case-based reasoning,
and AmI:
- Context-aware Smart Home solutions
- Reasoning in dynamic device environments
- Usability, usefulness, and reliability of AmI applications
- Multi-modal user interfaces
- Minimal-invasive sensing and human-computer interaction (HCI)
- Ethical, social and economic impact of AmI (acceptance, perspectives,
informational self determination, loss of control, privacy)
- Smart human interaction with autonomous systems
- Collecting and analysing histories of behaviour
- Security and trust implications for AmI solutions
- Service matchmaking (practicable)
- Responsive and pro-active architectures
- Adapting experiences and feedback learning (life cycles)
- User-centric explanations (to advance smart behavior)
- Communication strategies for AmI applications
- Collaborative filtering techniques for context awareness
- CBR methods for modeling of and reasoning about context
- Philosophical, social, and psychological accounts of ambient
intelligence and
CBR
- Advanced user modeling techniques
- Traditional relevant areas of KM (KR, planning, decision-making,
uncertainty)
---------------------
Submissions
---------------------
We invite paper submissions including descriptions of works in progress,
research
contributions, and position statements. Submissions should attempt to
address
issues relating to Context Awareness and CBR for Ambient Intelligence. The
workshop aims to provide a forum for scientists and practitioners exploring
ambient intelligence, from a broad range of disciplines, to share their
problems
and techniques across different research and application areas. Workshop
papers
should be submitted in Springer LNCS format, which is the format
required for the
final camera ready copy, with a maximum of 10 pages (tentative). Authors'
instructions along with LaTeX and Word macro files are available on the
web at:
http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html
Submissions should be made through the workshop conference management system
(see website for detail). For further information contact the workshop
organizers.
