AMCIS 2009 Call for Papers:
Gender Issues in IT Track, 15th Americas Conference on Information Systems
(AMCIS) San Francisco, California, August 6-9, 2009.
Description
The spread of information technology to all corners of the world and to
all aspects of personal and work life has led to increased interest in
understanding more about the diversity of those who use, develop, and are
affected by IT. One important aspect of this human diversity is gender.
The imbalanced participation in IT by men and women motivates the need for
a better understanding of the interaction between gender and IT. The
purpose of this track is to feature gender research related to all aspects
of the information systems field both scholarly and practitioner. This
Track solicits papers that examine the various aspects of gender issues
and IT for the following three Mini-tracks:
* Mini-track: Exploring the Influence of Culture on Gender and IT in the
Globalization Context
The level of participation by women and men in the IT field is influenced
by complex cultural and societal factors that are different from country
to country or that differ within a country. In addition, the globalization
trend in the IT industry and market has added new challenges to gender and
IT research. These factors motivate the need for research that explores
the influence of culture on gender and IT in the context of increased
globalization. Topics for this Mini-track include, but are not limited to:
- The influence of culture and globalization on gender and IT
- Particular socio-cultural influences on gender and IT in different
countries
- Methods to balance the gender participation in IT in a particular
socio-cultural context
- Theories and research frameworks that can be applied to explore
cultural influences on gender and IT
- Methodological challenges of examining cultural influences on gender
and IT
Mini-track Co-Chairs:
Haiyan Huang
Purdue University Calumet
Haiyan.huang(a)gmail.com
Jeria Quesenberry

* Mini-track: The Role of Family in IT Job Interest
Throughout middle, high school and college years, the role of family is
particularly instrumental in fostering interest in a nontraditional field
such as IT where exposure to the profession is often limited to mass media
images. For the millennial generation parents and other family members
exert a significant influence on career choice. Topics for this Mini-track
include, but are not limited to:
- The effect of familys knowledge about the IT profession and ways of
increasing their knowledge
- The influence of family attitudes about the appropriateness of IT
careers for women
- Important individuals in students lives who influence career
decisions
- Gender differences in computer use in the home
Mini-track Chair:
Peggy Meszaros
Virginia Tech University

* Mini-track: IT Education - The Role of Gender
In order for the global IT academic community to respond to the increasing
demand for the next wave of IT workers, we need a better understanding of
issues related to recruiting, mentoring, developing and graduating a
population of IT students that is gender diverse. Topics for this
Mini-track include, but are not limited to:
- Factors that impact IT career choice by gender
- Recruitment strategies to diversify the IT pipeline
- Gender issues and IT pedagogy

Healthcare is often perceived to lag behind other industry sectors in its
uptake and adoption of new technology. eHealth is one such technology
which includes the areas of health informatics, electronic medical/patient
records, clinical decision support, telehealth. The main purpose of
eHealth is to provide better use of information in health care settings,
to improve the quality of patient care and the efficiency of clinical
processes. Many situations exist where the use of eCommerce principles
would be appropriate to establish new eHealth solutions, and these warrant
extensive research investigation. Services Computing has been described as
a cross-discipline that covers the science and technology of bridging the
gap between Business Services and IT Services (IEEE Services Computing
Community). This role is supported by Web services and service-oriented
architecture (SOA), business consulting methodology and utilities,
business process modelling, transformation and integration. The goal of
Services Computing is to enable IT services and computing technology to
perform business services more efficiently and effectively. Opportunities
abound for the unique aspects of healthcare to drive fundamental computing
and IT research together with leading applied research within the
healthcare domain, that could potentially be reapplied to areas outside of
healthcare.

SUBMISSION CHECKLIST
Chapter file (in MS Word)
Brief author bio (in MS Word)
Individual files of any graphics (if applicable)
Permissions files (if applicable)
TONE
Because the book is intended as a book for a wide audience, it should be
written in a readable, interesting style. You should not, for example,
shy away from anecdotes and descriptions. However, you should avoid
jargon, unless it is necessary to the topic, and then you should
introduce the vocabulary terms with a definition of the term. To avoid
the temptation of making chapters appear to be research articles,
authors should include no more than 40 sources in their chapter.
LENGTH
Each chapter manuscript should be 7,000 - 9,000 words (about 20 - 30
typed, double-spaced pages), including sources and suggested readings.
Contributions of about 5,000 words will be considered as short reports.
IMAGES
The publisher allows some use of images in the volumes, but the number
is limited. If you wish to use an image, please ensure that it is
necessary to clarify the point you are making and deliver the
information. It would be useful for you to let me know if you will be
requiring the use of images in your chapter.
Do not embed images, figures, or tables in the text of your chapter.
Indicate placement with the instructions "Place Figure X.X about here".
Include images in separate files labeled to indicate placement.
Any photos and graphics used must be camera-ready and submitted in hard
copy and electronic form. Assume images will appear in black and white.
SUGGESTED READINGS
At the end of your chapter, include a list of "Suggested Readings" of
works that deal with the topic of your chapter.
STYLE AND USAGE
Chapters should follow The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition.
Do not use in-text citations. Please use sequential superscript Arabic
numbers paired with end-of-book notes. Chapters 16 and 17 of the Chicago
Manual describe citation format extensively.
Notes to figures and tables should appear as footnotes below the image.
Avoid cross-references to other notes and conventions such as "see
above" or "see below."
Do not use bottom-of-page footnotes except when required by a copyright
holder.
Cite full names on first reference and by last names thereafter.
Spellings should be in American English.
Quoted material of less than 75 words can be run into text and set off
by quotation marks. Block quotations of 75 words or more should be set
apart as an extract. The source of all quotations should be given
immediately following the quotation using a numbered superscript note.
If you quote at length from other sources, you may need to secure
reprint permission from the copyright holder. Follow the "Fair Use"
guidelines outlined in the 15th edition of The Chicago Manual of Style
(pp. 135-138) for details on when to seek permission from copyright
holders.
If you do seek and receive permissions, include a file of permission
forms with the submission of your chapter. This file should include your
original letter requesting permission, a list of the pages where the
material appears, and the letter or form granting the permission. Make
sure when requesting permissions that the rights cover all editions of
this work including hardcover, paperback, in all media, and in all
languages.
If specific credit lines are required by the copyright holder, make a
list of acknowledgements as required and include with your materials.
Reprint permission is not needed for works in the public domain
including U.S. federal documents, reprinted classics, and any words
published prior to December 31, 1922.

DE@ICSE'09
Workshop on Domain Engineering
In Conjunction with ICSE09
May 17th, Vancouver, Canada
http://www.bgu.ac.il/~sturm/DE@ICSE09/
Domain Engineering is an engineering discipline concerned with building
reusable assets, such as specification sets, patterns, and components, in
specific domains. A domain in this context can be defined as an area of
knowledge that uses common concepts for describing phenomena,
requirements, problems, capabilities, and solutions. The purpose of domain
engineering is to identify, model, construct, catalog, and disseminate
artifacts that represent the commonalities and differences within a
domain. Although being applicable to different engineering disciplines,
domain engineering methods and domain specific languages (DSL) have been
recently receiving special attention in the software engineering era. Some
of the reasons for this interest are the increasing variability of
applications, the need to obtain and share expertise in different,
evolving domains, and the trend towards reusing software artifacts and
knowledge about them.
Domain engineering addresses two main layers: the domain layer, which
deals with the representation of domain elements, and the application
layer, which deals with the software applications and systems artifacts
related to the domain. More specifically, the programs, applications, and
systems are included in the application layer, whereas their common and
variable characteristics, as can be described, for example, by patterns or
emerging standards, are generalized and presented in the domain layer.
Similarly to software engineering, domain engineering includes three main
activities: domain analysis, domain design, and domain implementation,
which are carried out in the domain layer. However, domain engineering
also supports inter-layer activities, namely interactions that exist
between the domain and application layers. Specifically, domain layer
artifacts may be used for creation and validation of the specifications of
application layer artifacts, while applications may be generalized into
domain artifacts in a process of knowledge elicitation.
Domain engineering as a discipline has practical significance as it deals
with methods and techniques that may help reduce time-to-market, product
cost, and projects risks on one hand, and improve product quality and
performance on a consistent basis on the other hand.
The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers and
practitioners in the area of domain engineering in order to define the
topic, identify possible points of synergy, common problems and solutions,
and discuss visions for the future of the area. In particular, workshop
will focus on the interaction between software engineering and domain
engineering.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Methods and techniques to support domain engineering
* Product line lifecycle engineering
* Development and management of domain assets
* Domain-driven software engineering
* Testing, modeling, and formal verification of domain and application
artifacts.
* Application derivation (i.e., how to use domain artifacts in the
application layer)
* Variability management
* Domain-specific languages, frameworks, and architectures
* Domain engineering techniques in support of reuse, validation, and
knowledge management
* Theoretical and empirical evaluation of domain engineering methods and
techniques
* Case studies and practice reports related to domain engineering
Submission Guidelines:
Prospective workshop participants are invited to submit a paper related to
the purpose of the workshop. The workshop will accept three types of
submissions:
1. Completed Research this type of papers should include evidence to
support the contribution (e.g. in the form of data analysis, proof of
concept, or case studies) and discussion on research findings and their
theoretical and practical significance. The paper should not exceed 5,000
words (excluding references and appendices). Accepted completed research
papers will be allocated 30 minutes for presentation (including questions
& answers) during the workshop.
2. Research-In-Progress this type of papers can report on research that
is under way with preliminary results available at the time of the
conference. The paper should not exceed 2,500 words (excluding references
and appendices). Accepted research-in-progress papers will be allocated 15
minutes for presentation (including questions & answers) during the
workshop.
3. Position papers this type of papers can include lucid and
well-supported statements and suggestions on domain engineering, e.g.,

The 2nd IEEE International Workshop on Barriers towards INternet-Driven
Information Services (BINDIS 2009)
http://conferences.computer.org/compsac/2009/workshops/BINDIS2009CFP.htm
IN CONJUNCTION WITH COMPSAC 2009 (Seattle, USA, July 20 -
July 24, 2009)

GOAL OF THE WORKSHOP
--------------------
Service sector forms a growing portion of world economy, accounting at
the moment under 50% and around 70% of the total value adds in the
developing and developed countries, respectively. Yet, this sector is
still lagging behind other industry sectors, such as manufacturing, in
terms of overall productivity. The advent of the Internet shortens the
distance between service providers and service consumers which, coupled
with the ever-increasing computing power, has become a key driver in
brewing a new wave of business and technical models, promising to boost
the productivity in the service sector.
A full End-to-End (E2E) service cycle covers stages of service creation,
marketing, delivery and management. It is only recently that the
importance of examining the scale, complexity and interdependence of
service systems, in the lights of globalisation, demographic changes and
technology developments, have been highlighted, calling for actions from
education, research, business and government alike. A first symposium on
"Service Science, Management and Engineering" and a first international
conference on service science were held in Cambridge (2007) and Beijing
(2008) respectively.
Service science is still in its infancy, existing main driving forces in
this area are from traditional hardware and software vendors who, while
possessing tremendous knowledge and experience in computing, are
restricted in the width and depth of visions in service applications.
This workshop intends to fill the gap; in particular, it focuses on the
fundamental issues in the service sector that are the major barriers
towards more efficient and effective service flows over the Internet.
Some exemplar questions to answer are:
* How to implement customers' functional and non-functional requirements
in a cost-effective way?
* How to maximise the reach of services to potential customers by
spending least effort?
* How do we gather information from a variety of sources that could be
created independently?
* How can customers find the services they need without special
knowledge on products or services?
* How to determine optimal service-level agreements based on actual
enterprise resources and to control their compliances?
Following the successful running of BINDIS'08 that was held in Turku,
Finland, 2008, we now continue to run the second in a series in Seattle,
Washington, 2009. This year's theme is "Enabling Technologies for
Services Standardisation".
The workshop will act as a unique forum to
* Identify key barriers towards efficient and effective service flows
over the Internet
* Provide catalyst to formulate innovative solutions for improved
service flows
* Define future research agenda that helps to boost productivity in the
service industry via ICT
THEMES AND SCOPE OF THE WORKSHOP
--------------------------------
The workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners to share
research results, advances and practical experience related to
internet-driven information services, with focus on tackling barriers
towards maintainability, interoperability, comprehensibility, usability
and controllability, in order to extend the reach and uses of services
over the Internet in a cost-effective way. Topics of interest include,
but are not limited to:
* Service creation
- Software as a service
- Software repository and reuse
- Service oriented architecture, analysis and design
- Service conceptual modeling, composition and orchestration
* Service marketing
- Market detection and segmentation
