Camera-ready paper submission 01 April 2009
Workshop date 08 June 2009
Theme of the Workshop
---------------------
Modern Web Information Systems need to fulfill a large number of
requirements. As a consequence the design of these systems is not a
trivial process. In order to facilitate WIS specification, WIS design
methodologies propose models that describe the specific aspects of these
systems.
Recent advances in networking technologies made possible the WIS access
using different devices (e.g., PDA, Smart Phone, PC, Black Berry, etc.).
In addition to the device heterogeneity there is also a heterogeneous
audience (e.g., different backgrounds, different goals, etc.) that wants
to access the same system. In order to improve the user experience,
these systems often need to personalize the content and its presentation
based on the current user needs (e.g., user's browsing platform or user
preferences).
Another aspect that can influence the behavior of a WIS is the context
of use (e.g., the geographical position, the temporal information, the
weather conditions, etc.). Systems that are able to exploit this kind of
information will further improve the application usefulness for its
users. Such information is possibly made available by Web services that
need to be seamlessly integrated in WIS.
As the Web data is very diverse, WIS are seeking efficient and flexible
approaches to provide integrated views over heterogeneous data sources.
These data sources are usually autonomous (maintained by different
organizations), overlapping, frequently changing, and distributed, all
these characteristics making the data integration on the Web a very
challenging research topic.
The increased use of rich-clients applications (e.g., AJAX, OpenLaszlo)
poses new demands to WIS design. The design of these applications needs
to go beyond the server roundtrip paradigm by considering the new
functionality added to clients, an intelligent data-push communication
with the server, interactive-rich graphical interfaces, etc.
Semantic Web technologies (e.g., RDF(S), OWL, etc.) can help in the
representation of the different WIS design models aiming for an improved
interoperability. One example of such a model is the user profile which
is often described using a CC/PP vocabulary. Semantic Web representation
languages prove to be useful also for describing the semantics of data
and the semantics of interfaces in order to facilitate the integration
of heterogeneous databases and Web services, respectively. The inference
mechanisms of the Semantic Web (captured in the semantics of the
representation language or in rule-based languages like RuleML and SWRL)
can be used for deriving new information or building intelligent
services on the Web.
Over the last few years, Web services have offered new opportunities to
deploy WIS. Web services are independent from specific platforms and
computing paradigms and have the capacity to form composed processes,
referred to as composite Web services. Web services composition fulfills
user requests that require the participation of several component Web
services. Several composition languages are now available (e.g., BPEL,
WSFL). A research venue that is worth pursuing is the modeling of these
composite Web services.
Goal of the Workshop
--------------------
The aim of the workshop is to provide a platform for bringing together
researchers, practitioners, designers, and users of WIS and discuss how
specific issues of WIS design can be addressed by means of modeling.
Specifically, we will discuss how the influence of Semantic Web
technology can help in a model-driven WIS development. Thus, the
workshop should enable a fruitful exchange of ideas in the
state-of-the-art of WIS modeling.

CALL FOR PAPERS
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st Workshop on Service Discovery and Selection in SOA Ecosystems
(SDS-SOA 2009)
in conjunction with
12th International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS 2009)
Poznan, Poland
April 27, 28 or 29, 2008

===========================================================================
Deadline for submissions: February 1, 2009
===========================================================================
Taking into consideration the development of SOA and growing number of
available Web services, it is reasonable to start perceiving services as
real goods and not only as programmatic tools that facilitate the
integration of IT systems. This perception is a first step to create SOA
ecosystems with Web service markets that link requesters and providers,
and support them in their transactions.
Outsourcing of IT services to external vendors causes dependency and
introduces new challenges. In particular, this applies to the quality
of outsourced services. If a mission-critical service is sourced out to
an external vendor, the provisioning of the required service and its
quality is beyond immediate control of the service customer. The success
of the companies depends heavily on the ability to discover and select
the right service (meaning the best possible in the given market
condition and clients' requirements i.e. given context) for the needs of
business processes taking into account both functional and non-functional
characteristic of a service. This suggests also a need for defining Web
service quality models that may assure the requirements of service users
and service providers.
Providing correct and up-to-date service descriptions that can be
matched against fine-grained search requests is essential for automated
service discovery and selection, but it is not always feasible. A single
service may provide quite broad, frequently changing, functionality.
Describing all aspects of such a service may produce large descriptions
that quickly become outdated and where frequent re-publishing may be not
feasible. On the other hand, the intricacies of service functionality may
depend on the customer at hand, the actual request and current business
conditions. Moreover, service providers might not want to disclose some
of the details of their functionality due to its sensitive character
(e.g., pricing policy). In case of dynamic and customer dependent
service, aspects like availability, price, delivery time and lead time
cannot be statically described. Functionality offered by such services
can be non-deterministic and cannot be generalized into static service
descriptions which would be detailed enough for matching against fine
grained search requests. Dynamic services call for the discovery and
service model that would encompass information dynamism. Two possible
directions can be pointed out: (1) user data dependence in service
description, (2) support for information provisioning by interacting
with a service during the discovery process. Strategies and service
models utilizing dynamic information in service discovery and selection
process should be further investigated.
This workshop aims at gathering researchers and practitioners who
present their original work in the topics of service interactions in
service ecosystems with a special focus on the interactions mentioned
above i.e. (dynamic) service discovery and selection.

Workshop on Software Engineering Challenges of Cloud Computing
in conjunction with the 31st International Conference on Software
Engineering (ICSE)
May 23rd, 2009, Vancouver, Canada
http://www.icse-cloud09.org
Overview:
-------------
Cloud Computing has emerged as a new paradigm for deploying, managing
and offering services through a shared infrastructure. The projected
benefits of cloud computing are very compelling both from a cloud
consumer as well as a cloud services provider perspective: ease of
deployment of services; low capital expenses and constant operational
expenses leading to variable pricing schemes and reduced opportunity
costs; leveraging the economies of scale for both services providers
and users of the cloud. However, the actual realization of these
perceived benefits are far from being well-achieved and pose a broad
range of interesting questions.
Call for papers:
Our goal is to bring together researchers and practitioners to
facilitate
stimulating discussions on the following three aspects:
1. Programming Models:
To avoid the pitfalls of heterogeneous programming paradigms, what are
the software engineering challenges that developers face when
targeting the cloud as their production environment to offer services?
2. Service Management:
How is cloud computing going to address the challenges around soaring
service management costs?
3. Cloud Services:
What are the new business models for services that could optimally
leverage cloud economies of scale?
We are soliciting contributions from both academia and practitioners
on these three topics. We are encouraging contributions of short
vision papers or practical experiences (6 Pages) and full papers (max
14 pages)
with high quality research contributions and experimental results. All
papers should be in the two-column IEEE format, as required for the
ICSE (seehttp://www.cs.uoregon.edu/events/icse2009/calls/format/).
Papers must be submitted in PDF format, using the EasyChair website
