International Workshop on Educational Data Mining (EDM@ICALT'07)
as part of the 7th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning

*** CALL FOR PAPERS ***
Recently, the increase in dissemination of interactive learning
environments has allowed the collection of huge amounts of data. An
effective way of discovering new knowledge from large and complex data
sets is data mining. As such, the EDM workshop invites papers that study
how to apply data mining to analyze data generated by learning systems or
experiments, as well as how discovered information can be used to improve
adaptation and personalization. Interesting problems data mining can help
to solve are: determining what are common types of learning behavior (e.g.
in online systems), predicting the knowledge and interests of a user based
on past behavior, partitioning a heterogeneous group of users into
homogeneous clusters, etc.
Typically, educational data sources are quite heterogeneous (e.g., web log
files, interaction logs, source code, text and dialogue data, etc.), and
have a variety of different scales, grain-sizes, and spatial and temporal
resolution. Though the many types of educational data often differ
considerably from one another, they provide multiple types of insight on a
single domain or context and, above all, share the potential to reveal
unexpected and useful knowledge concerning learners and/or the process of
learning - if correctly and coherently analyzed. Applying methods to mine
the complex data that we can collect on educational situations requires
the development of new approaches that build upon techniques from a
combination of areas, including statistics, psychometrics, machine
learning, and scientific computing.
The EDM workshop at ICALT'07 aims at providing a focused international
forum for researchers to present, discuss and explore the state of the art
of mining educational data and evaluating usefulness of discovered
patterns for adaptation and personalization, as well as to outline
promising future research directions. The EDM workshop invites submissions
addressing all aspects of educational data mining with applications for
adaptation and personalization in e-learning systems.
The topics of special interest include, but are not restricted to:
* Methods and approached for EDM
* Characteristics of educational data and how to deal with them
* Learning browsing behavior; e.g., searching for patterns in log-data
* Data mining for predicting user (potentially changing) interests
* Mining differences in user's learning behavior
* Mining data from A/B tests
* Application of discovered patterns for personalization and adaptation
* Description of applications
* Case studies and experiences
The workshop invites papers reporting experiences, case studies, surveys,
reflections and comparisons. The submission format is: either a full paper
of up to 10 pages, a short paper of up to 5 pages, or an abstract of up to
3 pages for a poster.
* IMPORTANT DATES *
February 28, 2007 Submission of paper (IEEE 2-column, 10-pages maximum)

Visual Computing Lab, UT-Dallas
SCOPE AND TOPICS
================
Visual computing involves theory, methods and
application of enhancing the visual space,
along with human interaction, within the field
of computing. One may visualize unstructured
data, simple information structures, and more
complicated structures such as automata,
programs, and databases. Moreover, visual
computing is a field that involves
representation of artifacts and their
behaviors or executions. Thus, it is possible
to visualize heaps, their execution or entire
programs in which the heap plays an
algorithmic role. The ways in which the human
interacts with the heap through pure
visualization, touch, or sound becomes a
relevant issue. The concept of transformation
is integral to visual computing, where it is
often convenient to transform one type of
object into another sometimes for a specific
group or individual.
Aspects of visual computing are multi-facetted
in goals that are to be achieved during
information or language design. The following
represents a short list of qualities that are
of importance to the study within visual
computing: efficiency, aesthetics, pleasure,
emotion, engagement, immersion, collaboration,
and culture. Aspects of art, engineering, and
science play key roles where certain
practitioners focus on design and engineering
of visual interactions whereas others analyze
and study these interactions (i.e., science).
The International Workshop on Visual Languages
and Computing will explore these issues, and
will be held in conjunction with the 2007
International Conference of Distributed
Multimedia Systems
(http://www.ksi.edu/seke/dms04.html) to be
held in San Francisco Bay Area, USA.
6-8 September 2007. Papers on all aspects and
approaches to visual languages and computing
are solicited, including interactive visual
computing, computer-empowered visual computing,
human-empowered visual computing,
transformation algorithms for visual computing,
and visual languages for visual computing. The
following topics are of special interest:
o Visual Languages
o Visual Programming
o Visual and Spatial/Temporal Reasoning
o Visual Computing for Expert Communities
o Visual Computing on Sensed Data
o Gestural Computing
o Aesthetic Computing
o Ambient Information Interaction
o Visual Computing in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology
o Fusion of Vision with Audio and Other Modalities
o Human-Machine Interface Design
o Human Vision Systems and Models
o Visualization of Computational Processes
o Large-Scale Scientific Visualization
o Parallel/Distributed/Neural Computing and Representations for Visual
Information
o Pictorial Databases and Information Systems
o Biomedical Imagery
o Computer-Assisted Visual Art and Design
PAPER SUBMISSION
================
Submissions that address research and development
on the above and other related topics are
strongly encouraged. All the submitted papers
will be reviewed by the international Program
Committee members. Accepted papers will be
published in the Proceedings of DMS2007. A
selection of the best papers will be invited for
subsequent publication in a special issue of the
Journal of Visual Languages and Computing.

street shows, Golf courses, ...).
Purpose / History:
This set of joint conferences is the largest annual gathering of
researchers in computer science, computer engineering and applied
computing. Many of the 25 joint conferences in WORLDCOMP are the
premier conferences for presentation of advances in their respective
fields. Most of these conferences have been evaluated and determined
to be top tier research conferences
(see http://www.cs-conference-ranking.org/index.html for an example).
We anticipate to have 2000 or more attendees from over 75 countries
participating in the 2007 joint conferences.
The motivation is to assemble a spectrum of affiliated research
conferences into a coordinated research meeting held in a common
place at a common time. The main goal is to provide a forum for
exchange of ideas in a number of research areas that interact. The
model used to form these annual conferences facilitates communication
among researchers from all over the world in different fields of
computer science, computer engineering and applied computing. Both
inward research (core areas of computer science and engineering) and
outward research (multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, and
applications) will be covered during the conferences.

Special Issue on XML Data Services: Technology Evolution and Challenges
========================================================================
=
http://redmaple.hrl.uoit.ca/~jdmseiw2007
The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is used to represent
fine-grained data that originates in repositories in machine readable
format by providing structure and the possibility of adding type
information, such as XML Schema. A Web service is a software system
that supports interoperable application-to-application interaction
over the Internet. Web services are based on a set of XML standards,
such as Web Services Description Language (WSDL), Simple Object
Access Protocol (SOAP), and Universal Description, Discovery and
Integration (UDDI). Each service makes its functionality available
through well-defined or standardized XML interfaces. The result of
this approach is a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). XML is
playing an important role in the data transport protocol for Web
services. For example, SOAP messages are used both by service
requestors to invoke Web services, and by Web services to answer
requests. The interactions of SOAP messages between Web services form
the theoretical model of SOAP Message Exchange Patterns (MEP). This
workshop aims to explore and investigate various research issues of
XML data that is encapsulated by Web services over the network. In
particular, we call these networked services as XML data services.
New challenges arise in the study of services engineering, an
emerging research area devoted to the software engineering of
service-oriented applications. Services engineering is an important
area of the Services Computing Discipline, as promoted by the IEEE
Computer Society, ACM, academia and industry. Its goal is to
formulate effective solutions to the quality development, deployment
and management of these applications. Topics of interest include, but
are NOT limited to:
* Services engineering in XML data services
* Models and languages of XML data services
* Design and implementation of XML data services
* Interoperability and integration of XML data services
* Requirements engineering for XML data services
* Generation of XML data from Web services
* Data modeling concepts for XML data in Web services
* Ontology and semantic Web services
* Security, privacy and trust with XML data services
* Transaction management in XML data services
* BPEL and Web service orchestration with XML data
* XML-related languages like XML Schema, XPath, XQuery for Web services
* Convergence of Web services and XML database technology (queries,
views, updates, integration, etc.)
* XML-based middleware for Web services
* SOAP Message Exchange Patterns
* UDDI, WSDL and SOAP enhancements
* Case studies for XML data services
* Quality of XML data services and deployment issues
* Dependability of XML data services
* Technical architecture and framework of XML data services
* Design tools and methodologies for XML data services
* Usage and usefulness analysis of XML data services
The goal of this proposed special issue is to crystallize the
emerging XML data technologies and trends into positive efforts to
focus on the most promising solutions in e-business services
computing. The papers will provide clear proof that XML data
technologies are playing an ever increasing important and critical
role in supporting business service processes. It is also expected
that the papers will further research new best practices and
directions in XML data services.

Call for Papers
*******************
The 8th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Grid Computing
(Grid 2007, http://www.grid2007.org)
Austin, Texas, USA, September 19-21, 2007
Grid computing is evolving from the sharing of powerful computers for
widely distributed applications to service orientation, open standards
integration, collaboration, and virtualization. The ongoing development of
the Grid as a service-oriented architecture for transparent and reliable
distributed computing allows the reuse of existing components and
information resources, and the assembly of these components in a flexible
self-organizing manner. Hiding the complexity and technical details of the
Grid from end users and application developers is going to play a crucial
role in the future, for which issues related to security, provenance,
automatic recovery, machine-interpretable metadata, QoS and SLA
negotiation, etc. will have to be carefully addressed.
The Grid conference series is an annual international meeting with the
objective to serve as both, the premier conference presenting best Grid
research and as a forum for free exchange of ideas. Grid 2007 will feature
invited talks, workshops, tutorials, and refereed paper presentations where
new concepts are introduced and explored.

Betreff: Tagung "Kontrolle durch Transparenz - Transparenz durch
Kontrolle" des Fachbereichs "Informatik und Gesellschaft"
Datum: Mon, 29 Jan 2007 15:28:57 +0100 (CET)
Von: gi-mitglieder-info(a)gi-ev.de
An: neumann(a)wu-wien.ac.at
Kontrolle durch Transparenz
Transparenz durch Kontrolle
Tagung des Fachbereichs Informatik und Gesellschaft
der Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (GI)
Berlin-Adlershof
27. bis 29. April 2007
Demokratie und Onlinewahlen :: Wissenschaftliches Publizieren ::
Nationale IT-Strategien :: Von der Payback zur Job-Card ::
Digitale Medien :: Informatik und Ethik ::
Wissenschaft oder Design :: Beruf: Informatikerin
http://www.gi-ev.de/transparenz
Onlinewahlen, Wissenschaftliches Publizieren, Nationale
IT-Strategien
Frühbucher-Rabatts

Programm
Freitag, 27. April 2007
(GI) Martin Warnke
Auftakt-Referat durch Frau Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger,
Bundesministerin der Justiz a. D. und stellvertretende Vorsitzende
der FDP-Bundestagsfraktion
15.00 - 18.30: Workshop 1
verantwortlich: Peter Mambrey <peter.mambrey(a)fit.fraunhofer.de>
15.00 - 18.30: Workshop 2
»Wissenschaftliches Publizieren: Urheberrecht, Patentrecht, Creative
Berlin) und Michael Seadle (Michigan State University). Die Gruppe
des Computer- und Medien-Service der Humboldt-Universität
Berlin gibt
Anregungen zur Überwindung dieses Konfliktes. Wiki-Beiträge, die
Klärendes beitragen können, sind erwünscht.
verantwortlich: Wolfgang Coy <wolfgang.coy(a)hu-berlin.de>
19.00: Die Hörspielwerkstatt der Humboldt Universität lädt zum Live-
Hörspiel. Anschließend: Empfang
Samstag, 28. April 2007
10.00 - 13.30: Workshop 3
»Nationale IT-Strategien im globalen Zusammenhang«
Die neuen Informationstechnologien (IT) bieten unbestreitbar neue
verantwortlich: Nazir Peroz <nazir(a)cs.tu-berlin.de>
10.00 - 13.30: Workshop 4
Schleswig-Holstein
verantwortlich: Frank Pallas <pallas(a)cs.tu-berlin.de>
15.00 - 18.30: Workshop 5
»Digitale Medien zwischen Zentralisierung und Dezentralisierung«
Digitale Medien und verlustfreie Digitalkopien sind zentrale
ökonomische und kulturelle Herausforderungen der
Informationsgesellschaft. Während die Wirtschaft technische
Kontrolle
„Freie Inhalte, freie Kultur“.
verantwortlich: Jochen Koubek <jochen.koubek(a)rz.hu-berlin.de>
15.00 - 18.30: Workshop 6
»Informatik und Ethik: Fallbeispiele«
Die FG Informatik & Ethik ist dabei, Fallbeispiele für die Anwendung
der Ethischen Leitlinien der GI zu erstellen. Impulsreferat von
Christina Class (HTA Luzern) über den Einsatz von Fallbeispielen im
Unterricht. Mit den Anwesenden werden in Kleingruppen die
Fallbeispiele diskutiert. Einige sind bereits erstellt zu
Themen wie:
Plagiat, Biometrie, Medizinische Datensammlungen, Geschäfte mit
Minderjährigen, Hacking. Wir rufen ausdrücklich dazu auf, weitere
Fallbeispiele einzureichen!
verantwortlich: Debora Weber-Wulff <d.weber-wulff(a)fhtw-berlin.de>
19:00: Kalt-warmes italienisches Büfett (Rahmenprogramm)
Sonntag, 29. April 2007
10.00 - 13.30: Workshop 7
Gesellschaft“. Impulsreferate von Heinrich C. Mayr (Klagenfurt) und
Peter Purgathofer (Wien)
verantwortlich: Jörg Pflüger <jpflueger(a)igw.tuwien.ac.at>
10.00 - 13.30: Workshop 8
14.00 - 15:00: Abschluss
Abschluss-Referat durch Klaus Brunnstein, Präsident der
International
Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) und langjähriger
(GI)

SCOPE
Data management is becoming a more and more important issue in every kind of
computing system. High-performance computing, data visualization, multimedia
and data mining systems are examples of application areas where input/output
and storage are critical issues for performance. A key challenge in those
areas is how to transfer large amounts of data in and out of large-scale
systems, like clusters, Grids and peer-to-peer systems. Another key point is
how to transfer large amount of data in a timely manner. The aim of the
workshop is to identify, discuss, and share the barriers and workarounds
that have been discovered in the storage and input/output fields.
PUBLICATION:
Best papers from the workshop will be selected by the SDMAS program
committee for publication in an special issue of Journal of Supercomputing
(provisional acceptance received).
The conference proceedings will be published by CSREA Press (ISBN) in
hardcopy.
