3rd Call for Papers
The Third International Conference on Soft Methods in Probability and
Statistics (SMPS 2006)
5-7 September 2006, University of Bristol, UK
www.enm.bris.ac.uk/SMPS
Paper Submission Deadline **27 February**
Over the last thirty years there has been a growing interest in extending
the theory of probability and statistics to allow for more flexible
modelling of uncertainty, ignorance and fuzziness. Most such extensions
result in a "softening" of the classical theory, to allow for imprecision
in probability judgements and to incorporate fuzzy constraints and events.
Many approaches utilise concepts, tools and techniques developed in
theories such as fuzzy set theory, possibility theory, imprecise
probability theory and Dempster-Shafer theory.
The need for soft extensions of probability theory is becoming apparent in
a wide range of applications areas. For example, in data analysis and data
mining it is becoming increasingly clear that integrating fuzzy sets and
probability can lead to more robust and interpretable models that better
capture both the inherent uncertainty and fuzziness of the underlying data.
Also, in science and engineering the need to analyse and model the true
uncertainty associated with complex systems requires a more sophisticated
representation of ignorance than that provided by uninformative Bayesian
priors.
Soft Methods in Probability and Statistics (SMPS) 2006 will be hosted by
the Artificial Intelligence Group, Department of Engineering Mathematics at
the University of Bristol, UK. This is the third of a series of biennial
conferences organized in 2002 by the Systems Research Institute from the
Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw and in 2004 by the Department of
Statistics and Operation Research at the University of Oviedo in Spain.
SMPS 2006 aims to provide a forum for researchers to present and discuss
ideas, theories, and applications. The scope of conference is to bring
together experts representing all existing and novel approaches to soft
probability and statistics. In particular, we would welcome papers
combining probability and statistics with fuzzy logic, applications of the
Dempster-Shafer theory, possibility theory, generalized theories of
uncertainty, generalized random elements, generalized probabilities and so
on.

Call for Papers (EXTENDED DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 15TH!!)
Special Session on Computational Intelligence for Dynamic Data Mining
World Congress on Computational Intelligence WCCI 2006 (www.wcci2006.org)
Vancouver, BC, Canada
July 16-21, 2006
During the last two decades, we have witnessed the rapid development of the
technology of data mining along with a plethora of advanced architectures and
techniques. There are numerous successful applications that have spurred more
interest in the area and fostered the need for further research on
methodological issues, algorithms and specialized development platforms. What
still remains an open issue, however, is the question how to update the
respective systems when new data becomes available. Here, dynamic data mining
comes into play by offering a coherent suite of technologies for ?updating?
and enhancing functionality of the existing data mining systems.
Such dynamic aspects of systems become highly relevant to all categories of
applications of data mining such as e.g. clustering, classification,
association and deviation detection, visualization, to name the most
representative examples.
Computational Intelligence (CI), in particular neural networks, fuzzy logic, and
evolutionary computing forming a coherent conceptual and algorithmic platform,
offers evident advantages by supporting understanding, modeling, and
experimenting in presence of dynamic aspects of data mining. For instance,
neural networks offer superb learning abilities and in this sense become of
evident interest when dealing with various facets of pattern updating. Some
other aspects of dynamic data mining are related to concept drift and in this
case fuzzy logic and fuzzy sets offer an interesting insight into the vagueness
of the underlying phenomenon. Genetic optimization helps address various aspects
of structural optimization. Evolutionary computing with its inherent adaptation
capabilities provides powerful mechanisms for dynamic data mining.
The intent of the special session is to help address the needs for a well
balanced methodological development and foster more interaction between
different sectors of the research community and share experience on advanced
case studies and successful real-world applications.
Topics of interest (not limited to)
- The development of specialized computational Intelligence methods for dynamic
data mining, considering various categories of applications, e.g. clustering,
classification, association and deviation detection, visualization.
- The use of well established technology of Computational Intelligence to
dynamic data mining
- Reports on successful applications and case studies of dynamic data mining to
real world problems. In this class of submission we anticipate a comprehensive
report on the development, design cycle, comparative analysis and evaluation of
the resulting system.

*Summary*
We call intraweb, a web comprising all HTTP nodes on an intranet.
Most large companies have intrawebs as part of their internal
information systems, enabling them to share confidential resources
with their employees e.g. organisational structure, corporate
templates, HR resources, forms, directory, agendas, news, policies,
project descriptions, expert directory, partnerships with external
companies, law information, etc. Intrawebs offer a safe place to
publish interfaces to corporate 'legacy' data, information systems
and shared applications. In many organisations intrawebs became a
privileged means for knowledge management. The Web technologies are
used internally for servers distributing information, browsers are
used to access it and in addition to an economy of scale in terms
of building, deployment and maintenance costs, one can also recognize
an economy of scale in terms cognitive workload: reusing the same
technologies and tools as the World Wide Web to build an
organization-wide web of internal documents makes it familiar and
easier both for developers and users and from the users' stand point
the open web and the intraweb seamlessly integrate in their navigators.
Many evolutions of the world-wide web have been adopted and used in
internal webs. Even latest web tools meet application scenarios on
corporate webs: wikis are used to edit and maintain corporate documents,
blogs are used for news and technological watch, etc. Being on a private
network of the company, intrawebs can include a whole family of
applications that could not be made available on the public web for
confidentiality reasons. Within a company the existence of communities
and their shared professional interests makes the intraweb a selected
place to develop and experiment new web-based solutions. The microcosm
of intrawebs has also been used as labs and seeds for new web
applications that then spread on the open web.
The goal of this workshop is to bring designers, researchers and
practitioners together and exchange ideas and experiences concerning
intrawebs.
*Keywords*
intranets, internal web sites and web applications, corporate webs,
corporate portals, online corporate memories, corporate web services,
corporate semantic webs
*Possible subjects include*
- Design tools and methodologies for internal portals and web sites;
- Usage and usefulness analysis of corporate webs;
- Security, privacy, profile-based access to intrawebs resources;

(expert matching, acquaintance networks, communities of practices,
communities of interest, etc.);
- Web-based enterprise application integration;
- Corporate wikis, corporate blogs, corporate web services, corporate
semantic webs, etc.;
- Connection of internal webs and external web.
*Motivations and objectives*
Historically there has always been a synergy between world-wide web
evolutions and intra-webs experiments. Many evolutions of the
world-wide web have been adopted and used in internal webs and,
vice-versa, many local initiatives on intrawebs turned out to be
seeds of new web applications. Nowadays corporate webs are a de
facto central piece of corporate information systems. However many
options exist (architectures, technologies, policies, etc.) and we
should foster the exchange of experiences.
This workshops aims at providing a survey of the current trends on
intrawebs, foster exchanges of returns on experience, discuss options
available when building intrawebs, evaluation criteria and priorities
(open vs. secure, content and indexing, etc.). Ideally, it would be
the meeting point of a community of practice.
This workshop is open: any person interested should have the
opportunity to participate. We will rely on reviews by peers chosen
from an international program committee; we intend to get three reviews
per paper.
*Submission*

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
To be announced
CONFERENCE VENUE
The conference will take place in the historical castle of Medina del
Campo, known as Castillo de la Mota. This 13th century building, reformed
in the 15th century and restored in 1942 has an important historical role,
being used by the Catholic kings as their residence, and later as an
important prison of the many enemies of Spanish kings, like Cesar Borgia
(the inspirer of Maquiavelo's Prince) or Hernando Pizarro (with his
brother Francisco, conquerors of Peru). The castle is placed in a
prominent hill upon which castellan flat landscape can be overviewed.
The nearby village of Medina del Campo has always been renowned by its
ferias generales, markets for products brought from all Europe. Nowadays,
this market survives devoted for agricultural and farming products of the
region, and can be enjoyed by visitors every Sunday.
One of the regions most remarkable products, wine, can be fully enjoyed in
Medina del Campo. It is the center of one of the origin denominations of
wine in Spain ("vino de la Tierra de Medina"), but several others are very
close (remarkably, "Rueda" and "Ribera de Duero" among others). Many
vineyards and cellars are open to visitors, having also restaurants were
wine can be tasted along with the excellent "lechazo" (lamb) cooked in
traditional wood ovens, among several other regional dishes.
