Workshop on mobile internet based services and information logistics
Workshop, GI/OCG-Jahrestagung 2001,
September 26-28, 2001, Vienna, Austria
Workshop focus
Recent technology development (internet, mobile telecommunication, internet
appliances) brings the idea of ubiquitious computing close to reality. This
opens the perspective of information availability at any place at any time
to the network economy. Thus, mobile internet computing becomes extremely
attractive, there is a fast growing demand from users regarding mobile
communications and mobile information access. This demand is driven by a
broad area of application scenarios. On the other hand there are many open
problems for research including both, hardware and software issues.
However information availability at any place also opens up the issue of
information overload. More sophisticated mobile applications must yield a
personalized, demand driven information supply. We call those applications,
delivering the right information at the right time to the right place,
information logistical applications.
The workshop is oriented towards people from research and industy dealing
with the topics addressed above. The objective of the workshop is to discuss
technological and organizational issues as well as user requirements towards
mobile internet applications serving the aforementioned principles of
information logistics.
Topics
We are interested in papers focussing on concepts for mobile internet
applications especially leading to information logistical applications.
Papers can describe basic research, novel applications and experience
reports relevant in the following fields:
1.Modelling
Techniques for modelling information demand

Mobile computing
(models of locations and situations, location based services,
privacy models and awareness in mobile applications)
Information filtering / information demand models
2.Architectures and services
Mobile IP
Wireless application protocol
Mobile internet services
Architectures for mobile applications
3.Applications

CALL FOR PAPERS
World Conference
NL 2002 - Networked Learning in a Global Environment:
Challenges and Solutions for Virtual Education
May 1 - 4, 2002, Technical University of Berlin, Germany
http://www.icsc-naiso.org/conferences/nl2002
BACKGROUND AND SCOPE
Telecommunications, computer networks, multimedia technologies, and the
World Wide Web have opened up entirely new ways of teaching and learning
( across institutions, physical locations, countries, continents, and
time zones. Students may work distributed worldwide and nevertheless
interact in a virtual community. Academic programs are no longer
provided by single institutions only but can be established by networked
organizations like virtual universities or virtual faculties.
Best-of-breed programs are created in the Internet by bringing together
top experts from different schools in a virtual program. Powerful
wireless technologies will accelerate these developments in the future.
Distance education is no longer a matter of "learning in isolation".
Collaborative tools like discussion groups, chatrooms,
videoconferencing, etc. support immediate interaction between students
and teachers and among students in virtual communities. In-company
training does not require travelling and physical presence but can be
done at the workplace. Geographical locations of students and teachers
loose importance. Education in the 21st century is shifting from "real"
to "virtual". Physical classes are more and more replaced by virtual
networks of students and teachers.

CALL FOR CHAPTERS
M Quaddus and A Siddique (Eds), (2002), A Handbook of Sustainable Development
Planning: Studies in Modelling and Decision Support, Edward Elgar Publishers
(Cheltenham, UK; Northamton, MA, USA).
We are pleased to announce that Edwad Elgar Publishers will publish the above
book.
THE THEME OF THE BOOK
The theme of the book has been chosen with contributions from distinguished
scholars in the areas of sustainable development and model-based systems in
sustainability of development in mind. The dimensions of sustainable
development and its modelling changed significantly during the last quarter
of the twentieth century.
In 1987, The World Commission on Environment and Development (WECD) published
a volume titled, Our Common Future which became the most cited reference for
the concept of sustainable development. In that book, WECD defines
sustainable development as the development that "meets the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their
own needs" (p.8).
Since the publication of Our Common Future sustainable development has become
a major concern for policy makers and planners in both the developed and
developing countries. With gradual extension of the dimensions of
sustainable development over the years, policy makers and planners have
increasingly faced problem of finding an appropriate approach to plan the
'sustainability' of development. Given the multi-dimensional nature of the
concept of sustainable development, it is not unusual that no single model
would be good enough to plan the 'sustainability' of development.
Perhaps one of the first formal models to deal with the sustainability of
developed was developed by Meadows et al., (1972) in The Limits to Growth.
Although they did not define the concept of sustainable development in their
book, but their concern was sustainability of development resulting from the
interrelationships of industrialization, population growth, malnutrition,
depletion of natural resources and deterioration of environment.
The necessity for the application of scientific models in sustainable
development became an international concern with the publication of Agenda
21 by the United Nations Department of Public Information in 1993. Chapter
35 (Science for sustainable development) of Agenda 21 specifically
acknowledges the role of model-based systems for achieving sustainable
development in the following words (p. 257): "One role of the sciences
should be to provide information for better enable formulation and selection
of environment and development policies in the decision-making process."
Most recent research has reported three important issues of sustainable
development planning. These are: (i) consideration of multiple criteria,
(ii) accommodation of group diversities, and (iii) the inclusion of group
preferences. Model based systems which support decision-making activities,
like Decision Support System (DSS) and more recently Group Decision Support
System (GDSS), address the above issues efficiently and effectively
With the publication of The Limits to Growth in 1972, Our Common Future in
1987, and The Agenda 21 in 1993, model based systems continued to play
important role in sustainable development planning. However, to the best of
our knowledge, very few attempts have been made to publish a book containing
articles in this increasingly important area. Although fragmented
applications of these model-based systems in sustainable development
planning have appeared in the literature, we strongly believe that many more
applications of model-based systems in sustainable development planning have
been made which have not been reported in the literature. The time is now
right to publish a book with the contributions from the scholars of the
experience and caliber of those who have dedicated their research efforts in
sustainable development and development of model based systems for achieving
sustainable development.
THE PLAN OF THE BOOK
The primary objective of this proposed book is to portray the current status
and future directions of applications of model based systems in sustainable
development planning. Our definition of "model" is quite broad, which might
include both "hard" and "soft" approaches. But we are primarily interested
in the use of these model-based systems in decision-making activities/phases
of sustainable development planning process. With this principal objective
in mind, the book will also deal with the evaluation of the nature and
significance of changes in the dimensions of sustainable development and
related model based systems during the last quarter of the twentieth
century; and the emerging trends and challenges in the application of model
based systems in decision making process for sustainable development
planning in the first quarter of the twenty-first century.
Thus, the book will be organised in three main parts. Part I will evaluate
the nature and significance of changes in the dimensions of sustainable
development and related model based systems during the last quarter of the
twentieth century. Chapters in Part 2 of the book will deal with case
studies and applications of model based systems (including DSS and GDSS) in
sustainable development planning in the following areas:
(1) Environmental management, (2) Mining, (3) Energy management, (4) Land and
water management, (5) Agriculture, (6) Fisheries, (7) Tourism, (8) Service
industries, (9) Telecommunications, (10) Transport, (11) Poverty
alleviation, (12) Primary health care, (13) Governance, (14) Education, (15)
Pollution control, (16) Economic planning, (17) Urban planning, (18) Family
planning.
The concluding part of the book will foreshadow emerging trends and
challenges in the application of model based systems in decision making
process for sustainable development planning in the first quarter of the
twenty-first century.
As editors of the book, we now invite proposals for contributing chapters in
this book from the scholars and practitioners whose main area of research
has been in the area of (a) sustainable development and (b) the application
of model based systems in decision making process for sustainable
development.
FORMAT OF PROPOSAL
Please submit a proposal (about 3 pages double spaced) that should contain:
chapter title, objectives of the chapter, outline of the chapter, and
theoretical and practical contributions of the chapter proposed. Proposals
should be formatted and submitted as an MS Word 97 (or higher) document.
DEADLINE FOR PROPOSAL
June 11, 2001.
NOTICE OF ACCEPTANCE
June 25, 2001.
DEADLINE FOR FULL CHAPTER
August 31, 2001.
CAMERA READY COPY

chapters need to prepare the final versions based on referees' reports and
editors' comments. Revised camera-ready copy (following the guidelines of
Edward Elgar Publishers to be provided later on) should be submitted by

Fourth International Symposium on
Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages
(PADL '02)
http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~padl2002
Portland, Oregon, USA
Jan 19-20, 2002
Co-located with POPL 2002
Declarative languages build on sound theoretical bases to provide
attractive frameworks for application development. These languages
have been successfully applied to vastly different real-world
situations, ranging from data base management to active networks
to software engineering to decision support systems.
New developments in theory and implementation have opened up new
application areas. At the same time, applications of declarative
languages to novel problems raises numerous interesting research
issues. Well-known questions include designing for scalability,
language extensions for application deployment, and programming
environments. Thus, applications drive the progress in the theory
and implementation of declarative systems, and benefit from this
progress as well.
PADL provides a forum for researchers, practitioners, and
implementors of declarative languages to exchange ideas on current
and novel application areas and on the requirements for effective
deployment of declarative systems. We invite papers dealing with
practical applications of newly discovered results and techniques
in logic, constraint, and functional programming. Papers dealing
with practical applications of theoretical results, new techniques
of implementation with considerable impact on an application, or
innovative applications are particularly welcome. Position papers
as well as papers that present works in progress are also welcome.
The scope of PADL includes, but is not limited to:
o Innovative applications of declarative languages
o Declarative domain-specific languages and applications
o New developments in declarative languages
and their impact on applications
o Practical experiences
o Evaluation of implementation techniques
on practical applications
o Novel uses of declarative languages in the classroom
The papers should highlight the practical contribution of the work
and the relevance of declarative languages to achieve that end.
PADL 2002 will co-locate with ACM POPL 2002, in Portland, Oregon.
Previous PADLs were held in San Antonio (1999), Boston (2000), and
Las Vegas (2001).
Important Dates:
o Paper Submission: Aug. 10, 2001
o Notification: Oct. 8, 2001
o Camera Ready: Nov. 5, 2001
o Symposium: Jan. 19-20, 2002
Paper Submission: Authors should submit an electronic copy of the
full paper (written in English) in Postscript (Level 2) or PDF.
Papers must be no longer than 15 pages, written in 11-point font
and with single spacing. Since the final proceedings will be

this special issue devoted to m-commerce, we invite papers that
contribute to the broad area of wireless innovation, and its
consequent implications for research and practice.
We welcome a variety of perspectives including empirical
evidence, case studies, and theoretical frameworks that shed
further light on this important area.
A List of Possible Topics includes, but is not limited to:
1. New business models in wireless m-commerce
2. Legal and regulatory issues in m-commerce
3. Development of and differences in the global wireless
marketplace
4. Wireless marketing strategies (including market needs
and user behavior)
5. Impact of proprietary versus open standards
6. Emerging technologies in m-commerce: which ones stimulate
or retard progress?
7. Business planning amidst technical uncertainties
