CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
The eleventh Workshop on Logic Programming Environments will provide a
forum for researchers, developers, programmers, and users to exchange
ideas and results on all aspects of environments for logic
programming. This includes work related to design and interface
issues, new techniques and tools, and the solution of noteworthy
problems arising, for example, from new logic programming languages or
interesting application areas.
Both state-of-the-practice and state-of-the-art presentations are
welcome. Presentations may be in the form of papers or live
demonstrations. Specific topic areas relevant to the workshop include,
but are not limited to:
* software development
e.g. program composition aids, automatic transformation
techniques, code partitioning and module schemes
* software validation
e.g. testing, automated property provers
* software maintenance
e.g. automated and declarative debugging
* execution visualization
e.g. for program debugging, or performance analysis and tuning
* teaching and learning
e.g. program-development aids for teaching logic programming
languages
* provisions for new paradigms
i.e. special characteristics or techniques for dealing with
logic programming languages other than Prolog, such as parallel
(LP) languages, constraint-based (LP) languages, languages
merging logical and functional paradigms, visual logic languages, etc.
* interfacing to other language system tools
e.g. interfacing to partial evaluators, source-to-source transformers,
global analyzers, abstract interpreters in the underlying
language system.
* integration with other systems
eg. interfaces to foreign-languages, database and file systems,
windowing and graphics systems
The workshop will be informal in nature, allowing ample time for
questions and discussions, as well as presentations. Proceedings for
the workshop will be publically available via WWW at the Computer
Research Repository (instructions will be very similar to those that
can be found at
http://www.irisa.fr/lande/ducasse/aadebug2000/corr-instructions.html)
and at the WLPE archive site (http://www.cs.usask.ca/projects/envlop/WLPE/).
A hardcopy of the proceedings will also be available at the conference
site.
This workshop follows the successful workshop on Logic Programming
Environments held in conjunction with ICLP'99.
The first LPE workshop was held in at ILPS'89 in Cleveland, and there
has been a workshop every one or two years since.

Post-Conference Workshop
CICLOPS 2001
Colloquium on
Implementation of Constraint and LOgic
Programming Systems
held in conjunction with the
International Conference on Logic Programming
Paphos, Cyprus
December 1, 2001
========================================================================
see also: http://www.cs.nmsu.edu/~complog/conferences/iclp01
========================================================================
This workshop is a continuation of the series of workshops on
Implementations of Logic Programming Systems, previously held with
considerable success in Budapest (1993), Santa Margherita (1994)
and Ithaca (1994), as well as the Compulog Net workshops on
Parallelism and Implementation Technologies held in Madrid (1993-4),
Utrecht (1995), Bonn (1996), Port Jefferson (1997), Manchester (1998),
Las Cruces (1999), and London (2000). This year, the event will join
forces with TRICS (Techniques for Implementing Constraint Programming
Systems), previously held in Singapore (2000), thus providing coverage
to implementation technology for both Logic and Constraint Programming.
The last years have seen continuous progress in the computing technology
available both for the academic and commercial computing environments.
Examples include improved processor performance, increased memory capacity
and bandwidth, faster networking technology, and Operating System support for
cluster computing. Combined with recent advances in compilation
technologies, these improvements are causing high-level languages to be
regarded as good candidates for programming complex, real world
applications.
Logic Programming and Constraint Programming, in particular, seem to offer
one of the best alternatives, as they couple a very high level of
abstraction and a declarative nature with an extreme flexibility in the
design of its execution model.
The main intent of this workshop is to bring together, in an informal
and friendly setting, key researchers on implementation technologies
for logic and constraint-based languages and systems, in order to promote
a much needed exchange of ideas and feedback on recent developments.
The workshop is focused on design and implementation of logic and
constraint programming systems whether sequential, parallel,
or concurrent. Preference will be given to the analysis and description
of implemented systems (or systems currently under implementation) and
their associated techniques, problems found in their development or
design, and steps taken towards the solution of these problems.
Suggested topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- standard and non-standard implementation schemes
e.g. modification of WAM, translation to C,
native-code generation etc.
- optimizing compilers and static analysis
- parallelism and concurrency
- techniques for the implementation of different extensions of
logic and constraint programming, e.g., multi-paradigm
languages and systems, non-monotonic reasoning systems, inductive
logic programming
- benchmarking and performance evaluation
- Software design aspects of LP/CP systems: components, patterns,
etc.
- memory management and garbage collection
- programming environments
- tools for internet applications
- experiences from using systems in real-life applications

Subject: [CfP]: ACM SAC: Track on Standardisation in IT
Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 18:18:23 +0000
From: Kai Jakobs <Kai.Jakobs(a)i4.informatik.rwth-aachen.de>
To: ISWORLD(a)LISTSERV.HEANET.IE
Hello Folks,
The CfP below might be of interest to some of you (I hope).
Greetings from Aachen, and cheers,
Kai.
ACM Symposium on Applied Computing, SAC 2002
March 10 - 13, 2002
Madrid, Spain
Track on
STANDARDISATION IN IT
Track chair: Kai Jakobs, Technical University of Aachen, Germany
http://www-i4.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/~jakobs/sac02/cfp.html
In the networked world of today the terms 'information exchange',
'compatibility' and 'interoperability' have become ubiquitous. Yet,
without underlying standards there would be no such thing as e.g.,
interoperability. Standards - in a broad sense of the word - govern
the way information is formatted, transmitted, and represented.
Accordingly, a better understanding of, for example, the processes
that ultimately shape these standards, the driving technical,
application and organisational requirements, and the economic
consequences of the adoption of a particular standard are crucial.
This track aims at contributing to a greater awareness of these, and
other, problems and issues surrounding standardisation, and ideally,
to suggest some solutions.
The list of topics to be discussed includes, but is definitely not
limited to:
- The role of standards in information infrastructures.
- Corporate/national/regional/global standardisation policies.
- The economic dimension of IT standards.
- Corporate 'standards' vs consortium specifications vs formal
standards.
- Inter-relationship between consortia and formal standards bodies.
- New forms of standards setting.
- Domain-specific standardisation (e.g. for electronic commerce).
Instructions for Authors
Both short papers (around 1500 words) and full papers (around 4000
words) are solicited. A separate cover sheet should show the title
of the paper, the author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s), and the full
address (including e-mail, telephone, and FAX) of the contact author
(in the case of electronic submission this should be sent separately
from the main paper). To facilitate blind review the author(s)
name(s) and address(es) must not appear in the body of the paper.
Papers must not have been previously published, nor be currently
submitted for journal publication.
Papers should be sent to the track chair, preferably as an e-mail
attachment in PDF, to
Kai.Jakobs(a)i4.informatik.rwth-aachen.de
Only if electronic submission is not possible, please send 4 copies
of the paper to
Kai Jakobs

ICLP'01 Workshop on Computational Logic in Multi-Agent Systems
(CLIMA-01)
http://research.nii.ac.jp/~ksatoh/clima01.html
December 1st, 2001
Coral Beach Hotel and Resort, Paphos, Cyprus
in association with ICLP'01 (Nov 26th -- Dec 1st, 2001)
http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/iclp2001/
Papers Due on: August 25th, 2001
Purpose of the Workshop
Multi-agent systems (MAS) have become an increasingly important area
of research, not least because of the advances in the Internet and
Robotics. However multi-agent systems can become very complicated,
and, consequently, reasoning about the behaviour of such systems can
become extremely difficult. Therefore, it is important to be able to
formalise multi-agent systems and, to do so in such a way that allows
automated reasoning about agents' behaviour. The purpose of this
workshop is to present techniques, based on computational logic (CL),
for reasoning about multi-agent systems in a formal way. This is
clearly a major and exciting challenge for computational logic. We
have to develop techniques to deal with real world issues and
applications.
In 1999, the ICLP'99 Workshop on Multi-Agent Systems in Logic
Programming was held and constituted the first in this series. It was
followed by CLIMA-00 at CL2000, where we had eight presentations of
papers and two discussion sessions. Following the workshop, we
announced a special issue of the Annals of Math and AI and we
especially invited all accepted papers of CLIMA-00 for submission to
this issue. We got over 20 submissions and the issue will appear late
in 2001 or early in 2002. We are planning to continue this series of
workshops in the following years in order to foster interaction
between the multi-agent and the computational logic communities.
Submission Details
We solicit unpublished papers that address CL-related formal
approaches to multi-agent systems. The approaches as well as being
formal must make a significant contribution to the practice of
multi-agent systems. Relevant techniques include the following (but
are not limited to):
Nonmonotonic reasoning in MAS
Planning in MAS
Adaptability and learning in MAS
Knowledge representation in MAS
Temporal reasoning in MAS
Negotiation, co-operation, competition and communication in MAS
Verification of MAS
Decision theory for MAS
Distributed problem solving in MAS
Significant applications of MAS
We are expecting full papers to describe original, previously
unpublished research, be written in English, not exceed 12 pages (A4
or letter format, up to 4000 words), and not be simultaneously
submitted for publication elsewhere.
We also require the following issues to be adressed:
1. CL: An introduction that includes statements about how the paper
addresses the exploitation of CL for MAS
2. MAS : An explanation of which aspect/functionality of MAS the paper
formalises,
3. Examples: Example(s) which give an intuitive motivation and
explanation of the formalisation.
We are also planning to have a demonstration session where authors can
present their implemented systems. Authors who would like to give a
demonstration, should submit a 2 page abstract for a description of
their systems. Please submit a PostScript file or a PDF file of a
paper to dix(a)cs.man.ac.uk by the 25th of August, 2001.
It is the author's responsibility to ensure that the PostScript file
or PDF file is printable (and can be ftped if the author provides an
address for ftp).
Proceedings
Workshop proceedings will be available at ICLP'01. We are also
considering on-line proceedings. Depending on the quality of the
papers at the workshop, we are planning to go for another special
issue of some journal.
IMPORTANT DATES
Papers Due on: August 25, 2001

Call for Papers
Continuing from and building on the success of the two international
conferences on Knowledge Management, organized by the University of Warwick
(2000) and the University of Leicester (2001), this conference is moving for
the first time outside the UK and is taking a more explicitly European
focus. At the same time, the conference theme is broadened to include, apart
from a focus on Organizational Knowledge & Knowledge Management, the themes
of Organizational Learning and Organizational Capabilities.
The widening of the conference topic reflects the increasing emphasis that
has been given in the last ten years on seeing organizations as knowledge
systems: from a knowledge-based perspective, organizations are viewed as
bundles of knowledge assets the effective management of which affords a firm
competitive advantage. Although knowledge has always been an organizational
asset, it is only relatively recently that this has been widely recognized.
There are several reasons why this has happened, including the increasing
digitization of social and economic life, the widespread use of information
and communication technologies, a more literate workforce, the increasing
dependence of advanced economies on services, the expansion of a
professional and technical class, and several other factors, all of which
have made economic activities and transactions depend on specialized, or
theoretical, knowledge.
As Daniel Bell insightfully foresaw nearly thirty years ago in his book The
Coming of Post-Industrial Society, "what is distinctive about the
post-industrial society is the change in the character of knowledge itself.
What has become decisive for the organization of decisions and the direction
of change is the centrality of theoretical knowledge the primacy of theory
over empiricism and the codification of knowledge into abstract systems of
symbols that, as in any axiomatic system, can be used to illuminate many
different and varied areas of experience". Since Bell wrote his prophetic
book in the early 1970s, further research has shown that even the most
theoretical forms of knowledge essentially depend for their application on
types of cognition and social skills that are inherently non-codifiable.
Theoretical knowledge and social context are inextricably linked.
Viewing organizations as knowledge systems has turned out to be a very
fruitful avenue for research. If an organization is a collection of
knowledge assets then the updating and management of those assets is of
great importance. Hence the current emphasis on attempts to understand
knowledge creation, transmission, storage and retrieval as well as to
improve our understanding of how organizational memory and learning
function. Since knowledge is so important, the manner in which organizations
remember what they know and learn from their (as well as from others)
experience is important, both theoretically and practically. Moreover, since
knowledge assets are so central to the functioning of firms, the ways in
which companies develop and sustain certain knowledge-based capabilities in
order to gain competitive advantage is a suitable focus of research.
One of the most exciting aspects of the knowledge-based view of organizations
has been its transdisciplinarity: it has provided the means for integrating
insights from a variety of disciplines and fields, such as information
systems management, strategic management, organization theory, marketing,
entrepreneurship, accounting, and strands of sociology, psychology,
economics, and philosophy. In this conference we seek papers (conceptual,
empirical, or both) from scholars from all the preceding fields and
disciplines that will address one, or combinations of, the following
questions (the list is not meant to be exhaustive):
(1) How are organizational knowledge and its management to be conceptualized
and researched? (2) How is organizational knowledge used, renewed, stored,
retrieved, transmitted, and shared? How is it measured? (3) What types of
organizational knowledge are related to different types of innovation
systems and business systems? (4) What information technology applications
and systems support effective knowledge management in organizations?
Similarly, what organization designs facilitate knowledge management? (5)
What are the mechanisms that enable (or disable) organizational learning,
with what consequences? (6) How do organizational learning and knowledge
management contribute to organizational innovation and change? (7) How do
organizations remember what they know, and how is organizational memory
strengthened (or weakened), updated, and used in particular contexts? (8)
How does social capital in organizations preserve knowledge, in what form,
for what use? (9) What are the best strategies for managing organizational
knowledge? (10) How is knowledge management related to business strategy and
organizational performance? (11) What evidence is there that firms
competitive advantage stems from difficult-to-replicate knowledge assets?
(12) What processes do organizations use to synthesize and acquire knowledge
resources, generate new applications from those resources, and develop
dynamic capabilities and value-creating strategies?
Conference Organization
The conference is hosted by ALBA (Athens Laboratory of Business
Administration), 2A Athinas Avenue & Areos Street, 16671 Vouliagmeni, Greece
(tel: +30-1-8964531, fax: +30-1-8964737, www.alba.edu.gr), the leading
independent Business School in Greece. The conference venue will be Astir
Palace, a luxurious hotel, located by the beach, in a very pretty area just
outside Athens (www.astir.gr).
Contributions and Participation
Academic Track
The natural home for conventional academic papers. Scholars from all areas of
management and business studies are invited to submit papers that address
one or more (or versions) of the preceding questions. Leading international
publishers have expressed an interest in publishing a selection of academic
papers from the conference.
Practitioner Track
As well as inviting conventional academic papers, we are keen to include
experience-based papers. In this track, participants will have the chance to
present papers that may be more descriptive in style, prescriptive in tone
and business-policy oriented. In the same track certain leading
practitioners will be invited to share their experiences.
Submissions
Authors should send a 500 word abstract as e-mail attachment at
OKLC2002(a)alba.edu.gr by 15 October 2001. All abstracts must be submitted as
Word documents and must contain on the first page a title, authors names,
postal addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, and an indication of
the track (i.e. academic or practitioner track) their authors would like to
join. Abstracts will be blindly reviewed. Notification of acceptance will be
sent by 15 November 2001. Papers must be submitted by 1 March 2002 in order
to be included in the conference proceedings. There is a limit of 120
participants.
