An Action-Oriented Perspective of Information Systems in Organizations, Rex Eugene Pereira http://inform.nu/Articles/Vol4/indexv4n3.htm Despite the best efforts of researchers and practitioners, information system (IS) failures continue to occur. IS projects are not carried out in isolation, and organizational factors can affect the project outcome. Using a case study conducted at a large, multinational organization, this research investigates the roles users perceive an information system to play. The purpose is not to animate the information system and give it life of its own, but rather, to make explicit the socially constructed roles conferred on the information system by the users. The role which an individual perceives an information system to be playing is determined by three factors: the combination of business knowledge and information systems knowledge of the individual, the socially constructed image of the information system, and the functionality provided by the information system. Models of Information Markets: Analysis of Markets, Identification of Services, and Design Models, Fons Wijnhoven The Internet reduces much of the costs of information sharing, but it does not solve information receivers reading and interpretation limitations. Search engines ease information retrieval but do not solve the problems of specifying information needs and evaluating retrieval results. This article approaches these problems as information market problems with solutions consisting of information market service process models. These models link information suppliers and information buyers and define activities, information resources, and information flows for the information market services. The models identified may improve the quality, speed, design and realisation of information market services summary goes here. The Impact of Information and Communication Technology on Interorganizational Coordination: Guidelines from Theory, Mariëlle den Hengst & Henk G. Sol It is widely believed that information and communication technology (ICT) enables organizations to decrease costs and increase capabilities and thus enables to shape interorganizational coordination. This paper describes guidelines with which the impact of ICT on interorganizational coordination structures can be predicted. The framework used consists of three perspectives: interorganizational coordination structures, ICT, and aspects of goods and services for the processing of which coordination is required. Interorganizational coordination structures are defined and the impact of ICT on coordination structures is indicated. So far, ICT is considered to be a driving force. There are, however, other aspects that have an influencing impact on interorganizational coordination. Those aspects are described and by combining those with the possibilities of ICT, the guidelines are presented. Self-Service Banking: Value Creation Models and Information Exchange, Ragnvald Sannes This paper argues that most banks have failed to exploit the potential of self-service banking because they base their service design on an incomplete business model for self-service. A framework for evaluation of self-service banking concepts is developed on the basis of Stabell and Fjeldstads three value configurations. The value network and the value shop are consistent with self-service banking while the value chain is inappropriate. The impact of the value configurations on information exchange and self-service functionality is discussed, and a framework for design of such services proposed. Current self-service banking practices are compared to the framework, and it is concluded that current practice matches the concept of a value network and not the value shop. However, current practices are only a partial implementation of a value network-based self-service banking concept. Companies who were able to manage and transform their business processes whilst outsourcing non-core processes were able to make significant efficiency gains. In recent years however, the issue of business processes management has returned to center stage, most notably with new process management challenges arising from the boundary-less e-economy. Now third wave Application Outsourcing offers the potential for core business processes or even mission-critical applications to be managed by a third party. Application Service Providers (ASPs) can offer what they refer to as Full Service Provision which in effect provides a firm with the opportunity to outsource almost everything it does. Papers are invited for a special edition of the Business Process Management Journal (BPMJ) on Business Process Outsourcing and Application Service Provision. The aim is to publish high quality original work highlighting contemporary issues surrounding the emerging application service provision (ASP) industry. Business process management, particularly with respect to application and process integration appears to be a major area that will impact upon the success or failure of this new business model. Paradoxically the global expenditure on IS and IT is increasing, with businesses investing heavily in new technology. Yet, questions surrounding the basis for increased spending and how it should be justified remain? Are the approaches and methods used for IS/IT evaluation flawed in some way? Are there alternative approaches to evaluation in this area that can provide the needed confidence? The aim of this special issue is to attempt to address these questions and others with a view to provide an understanding of the issues for researchers, IS/IT professionals and decision makers. Specifically the issue seeks articles that address the underlying assumptions and approaches relating to the IS/IT evaluation process. With the help of the articles in this issue one should be able to better understand the constructs associated with more practically useful approaches to the evaluation of IS and IT. The scope of the special issue will be to present IS practitioners, senior managers and decision makers a practical basis for IT/IS evaluation. Emphasis will be placed on practice and as such collaborative work with an experienced practitioner community is to be encouraged. Case studies and outcomes from action research projects are similarly encouraged as are contributions which deal with the issues from perspectives not widely represented in this area such as human, social, organisational or political perspectives. The editors will be particularly interested to receive articles relating to the public sector. This year's theme elaborates on last year's theme of "systems and software evolution in the era of the internet". Standalone legacy applications of yesterday and novel applications using today's technologies are rapidly becoming integrated as part of enterprise-wide and industry-wide systems. The need for rapid integration has led to many distributed heterogeneous systems that are very challenging to maintain and evolve. ICSM 2002 will address these new scenarios and the major challenges on maintenance and evolution. The focus of the conference will be on the new challenges that heterogeneous systems pose for software maintenance, and the new opportunities for researchers and practitioners. A main goal of ICSM is to promote interaction between researchers and practitioners. ICSM 2002 will bring together researchers, practitioners, developers and users of tools, technology transfer experts, and project managers. Jon Pincus (Microsoft) will describe how Microsoft handles software enhancements. Other outstanding Keynote speakers are being arranged. Papers must not exceed 5000 words (10 pages IEEE style) in length, in English. To encourage strong submissions a prize will be awarded for the "Best Paper as Submitted". The Program Committee will select the winner and a formal presentation of the Prize will be made in Montreal at ICSM 2002. FAST TRACK PAPERS: Fast Track papers should describe on-going research activities, or summarize the experience in software maintenance and evolution. Papers must not exceed 4 pages, IEEE style, in length, in English. Accepted fast-track papers will be included in a dedicated section of the conference proceedings. DISSERTATION FORUM: We welcome submissions of young researchers that have delivered their dissertation (Masters or Ph.D.) in the last three years. An award will be issued for the best submission. Four page summaries of accepted dissertations will be included in the conference proceedings and a special forum section will be organised at the conference. INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS: Proposals for presentations of Industrial Applications are welcome. These can be state-of-the-art descriptions, experience reports and survey reports from real projects, industrial practices and models, or tool demonstrations. A dedicated sub-committee of the program committee will review Industrial Application proposals and a 1-page summary of accepted proposals will be included in the conference proceedings. They can be accessed free-of-charge at http://jitta.org. In Volume 3:2, edited by Drira, Lori Leonard and Timothy Cronan add to the discussion about the next direction for electronic commerce with a model for supply chain success. The model is distinct in its definition of product, service, and infrastructure levels and creates a platform that is worthy of consideration for future EC research efforts. Volume 3:3 is a special issue on the role of dialogue in IS development edited by Metcalfe. This issue, which was introduced earlier with a lead article by Ian Mitroff, is now complete with six new papers. Neil Ramiller plays off Mitroff with a discussion of the relationship between technological development and human needs. The issue includes a very substantial two-part article by Werner Ulrich in which he makes a very impressive effort to lay down a philosophical foundation to information systems design, based on dialogue. Heath Colebatch, Sam Horrocks, and Jeff Smith help to bring a little realism to the IS table with an investigation about how managers inform themselves. The results are a bit deflating to proponents of a new era where systems replace human contact. The issue is rounded out with articles by Philip Marriott about the use of written versus oral dialogue and Dianne Watts about managers perspectives on the role of information systems. Volume 3:5, edited by Kishore, contains an exploratory article by Jaemin Han and Dooheum Han that proposes a new framework for customer value in the context of Internet enabled business. It contains two empirical articles, one by Claire Simmers and Murugan Anandarajan, which studies Internet-induced job satisfaction among 3000 subjects, and the other by Simha Magal, Ming Feng, and Patricia Essex, which develops a framework for classifying applications in electronic commerce and tests the framework with a study of Fortune 500 companies.
