: DEXA 2000 e-NEGOTIATIONS Workshop
:
: Negotiations in electronic markets - beyond price discovery
:
: Submission Deadline February 29th 2000
:
: Support for negotiations, in the form of various auctions, is becoming
: a widespread feature of electronic markets on the internet. Current
: solutions are mostly limited to single attribute negotiations, and
: are typically used to determine price.
:
: To expand the scope of electronic markets from simple to more complex
: products and services, the availability of support for integrative
: multi-attribute negotiations becomes a critical success factor.
: In integrative negotiations multiple issues are subject to discussion
: and different preferences of the negotiating parties towards these
: issues can be exploited in order to achieve win-win solutions.
:
: The workshop aims to provide a forum for discussion of the technical,
: economic and social issues related to e-negotiations. The organisers
: welcome submissions from practitioners with experience of real-world
: or laboratory negotiation prototypes such as mutlti-attribute auction
: systems, as well as visionary or conceptual papers, addressing for
: instance new business models supported by integrative negotiation
: technologies.

: PAKM2000:
: Third International Conference on
: Practical Aspects of Knowledge Management
:
: 30-31 October, 2000
: Basel, Switzerland
: http://research.swisslife.ch/pakm2000
:
: -- Call for Papers --
:
: Sponsored and supported by:
:
: ACM SIGGROUP (approval pending)
:
: SGAICO (Swiss Group for Artificial Intelligence and
: Cognitive Science)
:
: Special Interest Group "Knowledge Management"
: of the German Informatics Society
:
: Rentenanstalt / Swiss Life
:
: Aims and scope of the conference
: --------------------------------
:
: To succeed in the accelerating business pace of the "internet age",
: companies must efficiently leverage their most valuable and
: under-leveraged resource: the intellectual capital of their highly
: educated, skilled, and experienced employees. The compression of
: communication cycles and the omnipresence of information forces
: enterprises to seek a faster return on knowledge - knowledge that
: ages rapidly in a market place brimming with innovation. One of the
: most important prerequisites in achieving this return is the
: systematic management of the key success factor "knowledge" -
: previously left to manage itself "somehow". Thus next-generation
: business solutions must be focussed on supporting the creation of
: value by adding knowledge-rich components as an integral part to
: the work process. Therefore, an integrated approach is needed which
: combines issues from a large array of fields, originating from
: quite different areas such as business and organization sciences,
: cognitive sciences, and computer science.
:
: The PAKM Conference Series acknowledges the above situation and
: offers a communication forum and meeting ground for practitioners
: and researchers engaged in developing and deploying advanced
: business solutions for the management of knowledge and intellectual
: capital. We seek attendance and contributions from practitioners,
: researchers, and developers who work at the leading edge of
: Knowledge Management, pursuing integrated approaches which consider
: both, the technological side as well as the proper business side.
: PAKM is a forum for people to share their views, to exchange ideas,
: to develop new insights, and to envision completely new kinds of
: solutions to Knowledge Management problems. Like its predecessors,
: PAKM2000 will provide ample time for interaction and discussion.
:
: By explicitly addressing interdisciplinary approaches to Knowledge
: Management, the PAKM conference offers a unique and new kind of
: forum.
:
: Contributions sought
: --------------------
:
: The overall theme of PAKM2000 are next-generation business
: solutions and the role information technology can play in them.
: Thus, we seek original contributions in the triangle of business
: and organization sciences, cognitive sciences, and computer science
: that describe a true advancement in the state of the art of
: Knowledge Management:
:
: * Business and organization sciences give the overall framework
: in which to develop a knowledge management approach, which is
: first of all a business solution and not an information
: technology solution.
:
: * Cognitive sciences help to design a knowledge management
: solution such that it fits smoothly with the cognitive
: capabilities of the people involved and is optimally embedded
: in their work context - or, to phrase it differently, to
: ensure the situatedness of the knowledge management approach.
:
: * Computer science provides the technology needed to build the
: information systems which are often required to make certain
: aspects of a knowledge management solution work.
:
: Contributions to PAKM should show how the approach presented takes
: all of those three aspects into account. Additionally, paper
: submissions must clearly describe the (real-world) problem being
: tackled and point out the added value of solving that problem. The
: paper should give a clear description how the problem is solved and
: it should further make clear in which aspects the suggested
: approach is a new one.
:
: Submitted papers may be full papers with up to 12 pages and 30
: minutes presentation time, or short papers with up to 6 pages and
: 20 minutes time for presentation. All accepted papers will be
: presented at the conference.
:
: Papers may address one or more of the following topics, or any
: other topic as long as it fits into the overall conference theme:
:
: * Building and maintaining an inventory of the knowledge available
: in the organization (with people, in files, databases,
: documents)
: o setting up appropriate communication links between people,
: groups, departments to communicate what skills and knowledge
: they have
: o meta information systems
:
: * Bringing the knowledge existing somewhere inside or outside
: the organization to those places where it is needed
: o aligning organizational structures towards a knowledge
: sharing community
: o group support systems
: o decision support systems, just-in-time knowledge delivery
: systems, electronic performance support systems
: o information retrieval: interest profiles,
: information filtering, automatic text understanding,
: searching the world wide web, personal web agents
:
: * Making sure that available knowledge is reused and not reinvented
: o documentation and annotation of knowledge to facilitate its
: being assimilated by people who did not provide it
: o ontologies and enterprise data models to provide a common
: terminological framework
: o automatic text summarization to facilitate selection of
: relevant texts
: o group support systems
: o automatic indexing and abstracting of texts
:
: * Capturing and securing knowledge to avoid it from getting lost
: o designing business processes such that knowledge generated
: in ongoing work is easily and immediately captured
: o implementing lessons learned processes
: o organizational memories: knowledge integration,
: knowledge sharing, versioning, contexts,
: high-level modelling languages for non-computer scientists
: o knowledge extraction from texts
:
: * Developing new knowledge
: o organizational measures for supporting and stimulating
: innovation
: o information systems for supporting creative processes
: (exploration of data spaces, visualization tools, etc.)
: o data mining (from data, text, and the web)

: CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
:
: CP-AI-OR'00: Second International Workshop on Integration
: of AI and OR techniques in Constraint Programming
: for Combinatorial Optimization Problems
:
: March, 8 - 10, 2000

:
: Sponsored by:
: Commission of the European Union
: Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing
:
: In cooperation with:
: German Informatics Society (GI)
: German Operations Research Society (GOR)
:
: The integration of techniques from both Operations Research (OR) and
: Artificial Intelligence (AI) provides a new paradigm for solving
: difficult combinatorial optimization problems. As demonstrated by work
: in scheduling, rostering, vehicle routing, and other problems,
: constraint programming (CP) provides a powerful means for doing
: successful integrations of this kind. Nowadays, most industrial CP
: tools and systems have integrated efficient special purpose techniques
: from OR for improving problem solving facilities.
:
: In February 1999, the Universities of Bologna and Ferrara (Italy)
: organized the workshop CP-AI-OR'99 and brought together about 60
: researchers from AI and OR to discuss integration issues. In order to
: continue this successful event, the second workshop on integration of
: AI and OR techniques in CP will be held at the University of Paderborn
: (Germany) from March 8-10, 2000.
:
: The aim of the workshop is to bring together interested researchers
: from AI and OR and to make this the major forum for exchanging ideas
: and methodologies from both fields. During the workshop ample time will
: be allocated for discussion. For instance, a panel discussion with the
: title "Hybrid AI/CP/OR methods: What are the next challenges?" is
: planned during the workshop.
:
: This year a special session will focus on airline planning and

: Call for Papers for the Mini Track
:
: "Information Technology in Latin America"
:
: Information technology has transformed the way organizations do business.
: While a connected world provides access to similar technologies, the
: situations of use and deployment are likely to vary. Economic, political,
: social, and business environment prevailing in different countries and
: cultures can lead to the development of solutions unique to their
: circumstances. There is an opportunity for interesting and unexpected
: innovations in IT use in countries that are currently coming online. Latin
: America is in a unique position to show us something about the adaptation of
: information technology to these different regional contexts. The region has
: experienced economic reforms, political stability and the growth of
: technological infrastructure. At the same time, it is in a position to
: leapfrog over stages of information systems development. Thus there is a
: great deal to learn about IT itself from studying developments in Latin
: America. It is also important that scholars and developers in the region
: become aware of the variety of technical and organizational approaches, both
: successes and breakdowns, that have been experienced in the US and other
: technology intensive countries.
:
: The purpose of this mini-track is to provide a forum for research that
: furthers our understanding of the use of information technology in Latin
: America both public and private sectors. We also welcome papers about
: information technology as it relates to Hispanic communities in the United
: States. This mini-track will move us forward in the very important and
: perhaps too long neglected development of an Interamerican perspective on
: technology use which will benefit all parties. Long Beach is an ideal
: location for this topic given the large Hispanic population in California
: and its proximity to Mexico.
:
: This track encourages submissions of panel and workshop proposals as well as
: quality research papers and case studies. Possible Topics may include (but
: not limited to) the following::
:
: -Information technology economic, social, or political aspects.
: -Technological development
: -Information Technology transfer
: -Information technology applications for government institutions
: -Information technology in Latin American education
: -The impact of information globalization in Latin America
: -Electronic Commerce in Latin America
: -Dependence in Foreign Information Technology
: -Challenges and opportunities for companies
: -Information technology management

: The Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC) defines a WF as the automation of

: order to streamline and coordinate their business processes.
:
: Generally, WFs are designed and saved for later use. Therefore, these WFs

: WFs results from their no-adaptability. Moreover, with the recent progress
: of communication middlewares, for instance object request brokers, and
: programming languages for distributed applications, for instance JAVA, WFs
: need to be flexible and scalable. In order to cope with these requirements,
: a promising approach consists of viewing a WF as a dynamic collection of
: collaborative processes that need to be clustered together. Clustering
: processes and managing their performance could be assigned to intelligent
: components, namely Software Agents (SAs). SAs are attracting much attention
: for their autonomy, cooperative behavior, and lately mobility. Whenever

:
: PURPOSE AND SCOPE
:
: Information systems quality is one of the most pressing challenges
: facing organisations today. Global, national, and even local
: enterprises are driven by information. Many companies have discovered
: how critical this information is to the success of their businesses. And
: yet, few companies have effective ways of managing the quality of this
: information, which is so important to their competitiveness. Nowadays,
: databases have become the essential core of information systems, and
: therefore their quality must be improved as much as possible in order to
: guarantee successful information systems. Because of the growing
: complexity of information systems, continuous attention to and
: assessment of database and datawarehouses quality throughout the
: development process are necessary to produce quality systems. Commitment
: to quality in software development is essential both for satisfying
: customers and improving the productivity of the development process. It
: is time to consider information quality as a main goal to achieve,
: instead of a subproduct of database creation and development processes.
:
: Papers are solicited in a broad range of related topics including, but

:
: · Quality in Conceptual Modelling

: Call for Papers for the Mini Track
: "Understanding Knowledge Work"
:
: This mini-track invites research addressing information systems
: development issues related to knowledge work. Even though the
: definitions of knowledge work are varied and inconclusive, it is
: argued that knowledge workers include professionals, consultants,
: technicians, scientists, intellectuals and managers. Furthermore,
: knowledge work is described as the production and re-production of
: information and knowledge, it is cerebral and involves the
: manipulation of abstractions and symbols, and it typically requires
: formal education. With the advent of the information age in which
: information and knowledge are viewed as primary economic resources,
: knowledge workers are becoming increasingly important. This implies
: that we need to understand who knowledge workers are and what they do
: in order to design and implement technologies that support them.
:
: In this mini-track, we therefore want to explore the definition and
: characterization of knowledge work and knowledge workers. We also
: want to examine knowledge work practices to get a better
: understanding of what knowledge workers actually do. We are thus
: interested in research that addresses the following questions:
: - What is knowledge work?
: - Who are the people we call knowledge workers?
: - What do knowledge workers actually do and how is their work done?
: - How can we ensure that the implications of knowledge workers' practices are
: considered in the design and implementation of information technology?
:
: Of particular interest are field studies that not only discuss what
: knowledge work is but also how it is accomplished. However, this
: mini-track is also open to a variety of research approaches,
: including amongst others conceptual development, surveys, and
: laboratory experiments.
:
: Examples of research invited by this mini-track include, but are not
: limited to:
: o Research that develops definitions of knowledge work;
: o Research that explores the essential differences between knowledge work
: and other categories of work, e.g., craft work and service work;
: o Research on knowledge work in practice, i.e., what knowledge workers
: actually do and how it is done;
: o Research exploring the relationship between knowledge workers and
: technology;
: o Research accessing the issues of requirement analysis for the
: design and implementation of information systems for knowledge work;
: o Genealogical research on knowledge work as a category of work; and
: o Research on the social implications of knowledge work as a category of
: work
