: 'ENABLING PROCESS-ORIENTATION THROUGH ENTERPRISE
: RESOURCE PLANNING (ERP) SYSTEMS'
: EDITED BY: DR. MAJED AL-MASHARI
:
: -----------------------------------------------------
:
: The increasing level of competition in the global
: market is forcing many organisations to rethink their
: business operations and their underpinning information
: technology (IT) infrastructures. The recent advances
: in client/server computing and the growing application
: of business process management (BPM) principles to
: improve business performance have given rise to the
: development of enterprise resource planning (ERP)
: systems. ERP systems promise to provide an integrated
: application environment with a fast and seamless
: access to single unified information business-wide,
: hence representing a catalyst for business process
: change. Therefore, many organisations are currently
: considering these systems as the IT platform capable
: of enabling the shift to an integrated and
: process-oriented business design.
:
: Papers are invited for a special issue of the Business
: Process Management Journal (BPMJ) on 'Enabling
: Process-Orientation through Enterprise Resource
: Planning (ERP) Systems'. The aim is to publish
: original work highlighting various issues involved in
: the implementation of ERP systems for improving
: business performance. Strategic frameworks, conceptual
: and analytical models, surveys, and case studies
: focusing on the tools/techniques, justification,
: design and implementation of ERP systems are welcome
: from both the academic and industrial community.
: Contributed papers may deal with, but are not limited
: to:
:
: - Overall approaches and strategies of ERP systems'
: deployment.
: - Change management strategies for ERP
: implementation.
: - Business process management in ERP context.
: - Standardisation, innovation, flexibility and
: adaptability.
: - ERP and competitiveness.
: - Effectiveness and performance measurement.
: - Investment evaluation/decision.
: - ERP systems for various business sizes and
: industries.
: - Technology and knowledge transfer using ERP.
: - Benchmarking for best practice in ERP context.
: - Methods, techniques and tools for process-based
: system analysis and design.
: - ERP project management infrastructure.
: - Critical success/failure factors.
: - Managing strategic alliances and outsourcing in
: ERP projects.
: - Integrating ERP with E-commerce applications;
: i.e., Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) and
: Total Enterprise Integration (TEI).
: - Supply chain reengineering through ERP.
: - Role of IS function in ERP implementation.
: - Risk management in ERP projects.
: - Managing various scales of change in ERP
: implementation.
: - Success and failure in ERP implementation.
: - Technical aspects of ERP implementation
: (customisation, connectivity, etc).
: - Training and teaching aspects of ERP systems.
: - ERP in IS curriculum.
: - Current and future development in ERP market and
: application.
: - Methodological aspects of ERP research.
:
: Manuscripts should be 3000-5000 words in length,

: CALL FOR PAPERS on Electronic Commerce Metrics
: Special Issue of: Information Systems Research
:
: Electronic Commerce (EC) has evolved along with maturing communication
: technologies like the World Wide Web and the Internet. Increasingly, EC
: includes the actual delivery of products and services (e.g., software,
: information) in addition to advertising, ordering, and settlement of accounts.
: The purpose of this special issue is to stimulate empirical research and
: theoretical development so that knowledge about the measurement of
: electronic commerce activities may advance. Because most firms have only
: now begun to position themselves to exploit the business opportunities
: presented by EC, it is difficult to know how best to measure the costs and
: benefits of this activity. Without a solid base in theory and research, the
: impacts of EC on organizations, industries, and entire economies will
: remain the object of speculation and guesswork. Such impacts research has
: an applied value insofar as it can inform managers about how their EC
: initiatives can be effectively undertaken and managed. Research conducted
: now, relatively early in the evolution of EC, will foster a better
: understanding of emerging organizational practices and enable more
: effective realization of EC's potential.
:
: The potential organizational implications of EC are profound and
: experienced at many levels of social and economic analysis. At the industry
: level, the large organizations we know today may become obsolete, replaced
: by highly efficient electronic markets populated by large numbers of buyers
: and sellers connected electronically through B2B commerce. What are the
: relevant metrics for this form of commerce? At the level of the individual
: buyer and their interaction with the organization in B2C commerce, the
: clickstream of events can be captured and analyzed, but exactly what does
: it mean? Are there patterns of behavior that are associated with certain
: types of consumer? Are there patterns in electronic markets that are
: different than traditional exchange relationships? Are there ways to
: explain these patterns theoretically?
:
: Measuring EC at the micro-consumer and market participant level will
: increase our understanding of the impact of systems design, competition,
: and brand loyalty on outcomes. Manuscripts that address any of the
: following questions and others related to the theme for the special issue
: are invited. Both conceptual and empirical papers are welcome.
:
: How should the entire discussion of measurement of EC activities be
: framed? Are there solid theoretical or conceptual frameworks that can
: guide research? What macro-level phenomena need to be measured and how
: should economists and policy-makers measure these? How might the success
: of an organization's EC efforts be measured? Can success criteria used in
: other information systems research be applied? In what ways is
: intra-organizational communication impacted by EC? Interactions with
: customers? Which forms of measurement are most appropriate? Are
: traditional forms of measurement, like media richness, still useful? How do
: consumers react to the online shopping experience? What is the meaning
: behind patterns of their online behavior?
:
: Manuscripts will be reviewed electronically. Authors should submit via
: zipped E-Mail attachment. Format should be IBM-compatible, MS Word, Rich
: Text Format, or WordPerfect format. Manuscripts sent via fax/paper will be
: returned. Submissions should be sent directly to one of the Special Issue

:
: About the Conference
:
: IFIP Working Group 8.2 intends to meet at this conference to mark the turn
: of the first century of the information age. The purpose of the conference
: is to denote the transition from past to current to future investigations
: of the relationships and interactions among four major components:
: information systems (IS), information technology (IT), organizations and
: society. These investigations share a primary focus on the
: interrelationships, not on the components themselves. The various
: contributions to the conference deal with the history of IS theory and
: technology, with the directions faced by those sharing the concerns of the
: field in its future research, and with attempts to draw these two views
: together. Five discourses collectively seek to answer the key question:
: "What is the status of IS, as related to organizations and society, now
: that we stand at the juncture of the new century?" These discourses deal
: with the fundamental concepts, the classical and novel challenges, the
: conceptualization processes, automation, and new technology.
:
: What will be our story as we turn the first century of the information age?
: We believe that IT is even more critical in social interaction in
: organizations, that human language barriers form fundamental roadblocks to
: IT implementation, that newer forms of IS integrate horizontally rather
: than vertically, and that the mix of skills and knowledge is changing. We
: also find that we lack integrated approaches to risk management, that new
: social costs are being unleashed on people by the wiring of society, and we
: are rushing headlong into globalized systems with our eyes closed.
:
: The conference will discuss how the old end user tension between central
: control and innovation has reappeared in the intranet world, how IT has
: been converted to a cultural commodity, and explore how the video screen
: has become the central means for discovering our relevance to our universe.
: We will explore the surprising ways that machines have acquired human
: status, not through robotics, but rather through social construction. We
: will discover new norms for defining the relationships and exchanges
: between human beings and computers. For example, gender defines IS success
: and web design defines social relationships. Consequently, we may see how
: systems must now be developed interpretively, rather than through
: rational-technical IS design principles used in the last century.
:
: The Conference is being held on the campus of Aalborg University, a
: beautiful rural setting minutes from the delightful city of Aalborg
: Denmark. The Vikings founded Aalborg where the Limfjord, the great waterway
: of northern Jutland, is at its narrowest. The city has a charming
: 16th-century look and a hearty nightlife; the local brew flows in quantity
: at Jomfru Anne Gade, a tiny cobblestone street in the center of Aalborg,
: where 400-year-old buildings house inns, pubs and cafes.

: Call for Papers
: Mini Track - Workflow Technology and E-Commerce Applications
: ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
:
: Workflow technology helps organizations improve efficiency by automating
: business processes and achieving better process control by standardizing
: working methods and providing audit trails. Workflow technology and
: management is an emerging research area in engineering and business.
: Major software vendors such as Oracle and SAP are now including a workflow
: component in their software suites. As a result, managing workflow
: technology becomes an urgent topic facing corporate managers.
:
: E-commerce applications of workflow technology are more challenging than
: enterprise workflow applications because e-commerce requires process
: automation across organizational boundaries. An inter-organizational
: environment makes workflow automation issues such as heterogeneity,
: integration, interoperability, scalability, and security, much more
: important.
:
: In this mini track, we concentrate on workflow technology and management
: in e-commerce. Sample topic areas for the mini track include the
: following:
:
: * Implementation of workflow technology in e-commerce systems
: * The effectiveness of workflow technology in e-commerce
: * Workflow-based architectures for e-commerce implementation
: * Supply chain integration through workflow automation
: * Transformation of procurement process
: * Workflow system deployment in inter-organizational environment
: * Integration of manual, semi-automated, and fully automated sub-workflow
: systems
: * Economic tradeoffs in the adoption of workflow technology
: * Internet-based workflow systems
: * Organizational modeling in workflow systems
: * Flexibility issues in workflow systems
: * Light weight workflow management systems
: * XML applications in workflow technology
: * UML and workflow modeling
:
: We invite papers that address any of the areas listed above, as well as
: any related issues. A range of research methodologies including
: conceptual, case analysis, implementation, lab experiments, and surveys
: would be appropriate.

:
: Call for Papers for the Mini Track
: "Understanding Knowledge Work"
:
: This mini-track invites research addressing the information systems
: development issues related to knowledge work. Even though the
: definitions of knowledge work are varied and inconclusive, it is
: argued that knowledge workers include professionals, consultants,
: technicians, scientists, intellectuals and managers. Furthermore,
: knowledge work is described as the production and re-production of
: information and knowledge, it is cerebral and involves the
: manipulation of abstractions and symbols, and it typically requires
: formal education. With the advent of the information age in which
: information and knowledge are viewed as primary economic resources,
: knowledge workers are becoming increasingly important. This implies
: that we need to understand who knowledge workers are and what they do
: in order to design and implement technologies that support them.
:
: In this mini-track, we therefore want to explore the definition and
: characterization of knowledge work and knowledge workers. We also
: want to examine knowledge work practices to get a better
: understanding of what knowledge workers actually do. We are thus
: interested in the following questions:
: - What is knowledge work?
: - Who are the people we call knowledge workers?
: - What do knowledge workers actually do and how is their work done?
: - How can we ensure that the implications of knowledge workers' practices are
: considered in the design and implementation of information technology?
:
: Of particular interest are field studies that not only discuss what
: knowledge work is but also how it is accomplished. However, this
: mini-track is also open to a variety of research approaches,
: including amongst others conceptual development, surveys, and
: laboratory experiments.
:
: Examples of research invited by this mini-track include, but are not
: limited to:
: o Research that develops definitions of knowledge work;
: o Research that explores the essential differences between knowledge work
: and other categories of work, e.g., craft work and service work;
: o Research on knowledge work in practice, i.e., what knowledge workers
: actually do and how it is done;
: o Research exploring the relationship between knowledge workers and
: technology;
: o Research accessing the issues of requirement analysis for the
: design and implementation of information systems for knowledge work;
: o Genealogical research on knowledge work as a category of work; and
: o Research on the social implications of knowledge work as a category of
: work

: JOURNAL OF ELECTRONIC COMMERCE RESEARCH

:
: Call for Papers on Intelligent Agents in E-Commerce
:
: ====================================================================
: SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR THE SPECIAL IV ISSUE IS JUNE 1, 2000
:
: ====================================================================
:
: Guest Editor: Mahesh S. Raisinghani, Ph.D.
: Graduate School of Management, University of Dallas
:
: Prospective authors are invited to submit manuscripts for consideration
: for publication in the
: Special Issue of the Journal of Electronic Commerce on Intelligent
: Agents in E-Commerce.
: One of the most discussed topics in the information systems/e-commerce
: literature today is
: intelligent agent technology. Software agents are simply high-level
: software abstractions
: with inherent capabilities for communication, decision making, control
: and autonomy. They
: have several aliases such as agents, bots, chatterbots, databots,
: intellibots, and intelligent
: software robots which provide a powerful mechanism to address complex
: software
: engineering problems such as abstraction, encapsulation, modularity,
: reusability,
: concurrency and distributed operations. Much research and many articles
: have been
: devoted to this topic, and the general characteristics of intelligent
: agents are accepted as
: reactive, autonomous, adaptive, goal-oriented/reasoning,
: cooperative/social, flexible, self-
: starting, mobile, temporal continuous, and personality.
:
: A growing number of information systems professionals recognize that
: there are certain
: problems and issues surrounding intelligent agent terminology and
: technology that must be
: resolved if agent technology is to continue to develop and mature. The
: current research into
: intelligent agent software technology can be broken up into two main
: areas: technological
: and social. The latter area is particularly important since, in the
: excitement of new and
: emergent technology, people often forget to examine what impact the new
: technology will
: have on peoples lives. In fact, the social dimension of all
: technology is the driving force
: and most important consideration of technology itself. The technology
: is not created and
: produced for its own sake, but to improve peoples lives. Technology
: and computers and
: software are not created simply to see what the human mind can achieve,
: but they are
: created for the sake of human beings. In the Management Challenges
: for the 21st Century,
: Peter F. Drucker suggests that in this period of profound social and
: economic changes,
: managers should focus on the meaning of information, not the technology
: that collects it.
: What ought to be the focus of attention in this information revolution,
: as argued by Peter
: Drucker in The Next Information Revolution, is how to manage the
: information. That is,
: the emphasis should shift from the T in IT to the I
: (http://www.forbes.com/asap/98/0824/046.htm, 1998).
:
: This special issue of the Journal of Electronic Commerce Research is
: seeking papers that
: address the increasing importance of information value-adding
: activities by intelligent agents
: and the role of intelligent agents in knowledge management. The target
: audience is the
: academic and practitioner community. The emphasis is on taking an
: interdisciplinary view
: that integrates technology and business models. Of particular interest
: are papers that
: embrace a inter/multidisciplinary perspective on the challenge of
: integrated change in the
: context of introducing, integrating, and exploiting intelligent agents
: in e-commerce. Such
: papers will ideally draw on perspectives from the domains of computer
: science,
: e-commerce, information systems, psychology, and sociology. Papers may
: be conceptual,
: empirical, theoretical, or descriptive in nature. Rigor and relevance
: is stressed and
: recommended.
:
: Suggested topics include (but are not limited to):
:
: · the design and implementation of intelligent agents in
: e-commerce
:
: · intelligent agents for coordination of
: business-to-business services (such as with
: Internet-based EDI and supply-chain management) or
: consumer-to-consumer services,
: such as in electronic auctions, and their impact on the
: global economy
:
: · intelligent agents in dynamic trading and exchange models
:
: · empirical studies on intelligent agents/case studies of
: intelligent agents in various
: functional areas of business or other fields from a
: single, multi or interdisciplinary
: perspective
:
: · the development and management of the infrastructure and
: technologies needed to
: deliver electronic services using intelligent agents
:
: · the impact of intelligent agents on individuals,
: organizations and society
:
: · future research directions for intelligent agent
: technology and applications.
:
: For submission guidelines of the manuscripts see the following URL:

: editor for this special
: issue, Dr. Raisinghani at mraising(a)gsm.udallas.edu. Articles that have
: been presented at
: a scientific conference are welcome for submission, even though they
: may be published in
: non-copy protected Proceedings. However, manuscripts being considered
: by another journal
: at the same time will not be accepted.
:
: If accepted for publication, the author(s) will be required to submit a
: final version of the
: manuscript on an IBM-PC compatible disk or as an e-mail attachment in

: Constraint-based Scheduling and Planning for Autonomous Agents
: ------------------------------------------------------
: the 29 of February, 2000
: Paris
: Holiday Inn République
: ------------------------------------------------------
:
: This seminar address solving techniques for problems involved by the
: design of multi-agent systems. Those are composed with several agents,
: which can be autonomous. Agent based systems are of a great interest for
: industrial and scientists, since the past 10 years, especially in
: spatial and air domain. For example, developing a space probe,
: spacecraft or autonomous vehicles requires to deal with intelligent
: embedded functions.
:
: However, making use of those system is limited by highly
: combinatorial problems and complex collaborative behaviours. Thus, the
: operational capacity of the whole system is generally restricted due to
: the implementation of simple heuristics. For example, path or motion
: planning, task scheduling are still critical functions of those
: multi-agent systems.
:
: Now, those combinatorial problems have been widely investigated through
: Constraint Programming languages, Operation Research or with the help of
: local search techniques. Benefit from those patterns are of different
: kinds, depending on the completeness, the complexity and the generecity
: of the solving method.
:
: During the seminar, we will study how solving functions extracted from
: those domains can be linked with multi-agent system behaviors such as
: collaboration and cooperation or how it can reinforce mechanisms like
: coordination. The seminar will tackle topics related to the design of
: solving method and decision techniques in order to integrate them into
: multi-agent architectures. We will highlight how advanced solutions
: can deal with requirements involved by modification of the agent
: forecast.
:
: - Requirement examples for architectures based onto multiple
: autonomous agent in hostile environment.
: - Composition of solving paradigms with multi-agent features and
: mechanisms (collaboration, cooperation, coordination).
: - Languages allowing a higher expressiveness of both solving
: methods and solving integration into agents.
: - Model examples allowing to compose cooperation or collaboration
: strategies between agents with solving or decision methods.
: - Tool and design framework for prototyping, simulating and
: validating multi-agent architecture behavior based over those methods.
:
: Through presentations we will identify difficulties and state
: parts of solutions. Industrial examples under development will be also
: presented such as autonomous vehicle planning. The seminar will involve
: scientists specialized in both problem solving and multi agent systems
: and companies currently experimenting those techniques.
