: Journal: DATABASE for Advances in Information Systems<br>
: <br>
: Theme: Component Based Software Development<br>
: <br>
: </b>This special issue will focus on the latest research concerning
: component-based software development. Component-based development (CBD)
: has emerged as a new paradigm for software development which is expected
: to improve software quality, development lead time and programmer
: productivity. The basic idea underlying CBD is that software development
: can be significantly improved if applications are quickly assembled from
: prefabricated software components. A healthy market for software
: components has emerged and an increasingly large collection of software
: components is being made available though general, platform specific and
: industry specific catalogues. While these developments are expected to
: transform applications development from a craft activity to an industrial
: process, research is needed to understand how such a transformation can
: be effectively achieved and its implications.<br>
: <br>
: In this issue, we hope to publish papers that examine organizational,
: technological and economic issues related to component-based software
: development. A wide variety of research perspectives and research
: approaches are encouraged. These include, but are not limited to:
: conceptual papers that propose theories, experimental papers that are
: theoretically motivated, yet whose findings have the potential to
: interest practitioners; and field studies that develop new insights that
: have the potential to change practice or lead to new theories. Research
: focused on the development of tools and methods for CBD are also of
: interest. We are particularly interested in papers that are novel and
: present new ideas likely to provide directions for current research or
: practice. <br>
: <br>
: Many specific topics are of interest for the special issue,
: including:<br>

:
: Objectives
:
: Object-based Distributed Computing is being established as the most
: pertinent basis for the support of large, heterogeneous computing and
: telecommunications systems. Indeed, several important international
: organisations, such as ITU, ISO, OMG, TINA-C, etc. are defining similar
: distributed object-based frameworks as a foundation for open distributed
: computing.
:
: The advent of Open Object-based Distributed Systems - OODS - brings new
: challenges and opportunities for the use and development of formal methods.
: New architectures and system models are emerging (e.g., the enterprise,
: information, computational and engineering viewpoints of the ITU-T/ISO/IEC
: ODP Reference Model) which require formal notational support. Usual design
: issues such as specification, verification, refinement, and testing need to
: take into account new dimensions introduced by distribution and openness,
: such as quality of service and dependability constraints, dynamic binding
: and reconfiguration, consistency between multiple models and viewpoints,
: etc. OODS is a challenging research context and a source of motivation for
: semantical models of object-based systems and notations, for the evolution
: of standardised formal description techniques, for the application and
: assessment of logic based approaches, for better understanding and
: information modeling of business requirements, and for the further
: development and use of Object Oriented methodologies and tools.
:
: The objective of FMOODS is to provide an integrated forum for the
: presentation of research in several related fields, and the exchange of
: ideas and experiences in the topics concerned with the formal methods
: support for Open Object-based Distributed Systems.
:
: Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
:
: * formal models for object-based distributed computing
: * semantics of object-based distributed systems and programming languages
: * formal techniques in object-based and object-oriented specification,
: analysis and design
: * refinement and transformation of specifications
: * types, service types and subtyping
: * interoperability and composability of distributed services
: * object-based coordination languages
: * object-based mobile languages
: * efficient analysis techniques of specifications
: * multiple viewpoint modelling and consistency between different models
: * formal techniques in distributed systems verification and testing
: * specification, verification and testing of quality of service
: constraints
: * formal methods and object life cycle
: * beyond IDL: semantics based specification patterns
: * formal models for measuring the quality of object-oriented requirement
: or design specifications
: * formal aspects of distributed real-time multimedia systems
: * applications to telecommunications and related areas

:
: A growing number of studies have called for a more holistic, systemic
: approach to Knowledge. It is not simply a 'tool' or 'resource' so much as
: a social construct. It is a reciprocal, interdependent process of learning
: arising from knowledge transfer and information flow and communication - a
: Socio-Technical perspective which amalgamates the 'dualism' of people and

: CALL FOR PAPERS
:
: Fifth CAiSE/IFIP8.1 International Workshop on
: Evaluation of Modeling Methods in Systems Analysis and Design
: (EMMSAD'00)
:
: Stockholm, Sweden
: June 5-6, 2000
:
: Workshop Theme:
: Methods and Methodologies for Scalable Enterprise Systems Development
:
:
: Workshop Organizers:
:
: Dr. Keng Siau, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA (Chair)
: Dr. Yair Wand, University of British Columbia, Canada
: Dr. Andrew Gemino, Simon Fraser University, Canada
:
: Workshop Background:
:
: Modeling is an essential component of information systems analysis and design
: (SA&D). New paradigms (e.g., OO) and new methods within a paradigm (e.g., UML)
: are constantly being introduced. Some researchers call the field a
: "methodological jungle." In addition, most modeling methods and methodologies
: evolve from experience. A linkage to science is warranted. Scientific
: approaches that are based on theoretical foundation and systematic empirical
: evaluations would clearly benefit the field.
:
: The Workshop on Evaluation of Modeling Methods in Systems Analysis and Design
: (EMMSAD'00) is dedicated to issues related to the development and evaluation of
: modeling methods in SA&D. EMMSAD'00 is 5th in the workshop series that began in
: 1996. EMMSAD workshops have been very successful in bringing together
: researchers and practitioners in information systems, method engineering,
: software engineering, database, and human computer interaction that are
: interested in modeling methods and methodologies in systems analysis and design.
: EMMSAD workshops provide a forum for researchers and practitioners in the area
: to meet and exchange research ideas and results.
:
: EMMSAD'00 is an event jointly sponsored by the Conference on Advanced
: Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE) and the International Federation for
: Information Processing Working Group 8.1 (IFIP8.1).
:
: Theme and Topics for Workshop:
:
: The theme for EMMSAD'00 is "Methods and Methodologies for Scalable Enterprise
: Systems Development." Information systems are no longer designed and developed
: to support a single organization. New information systems will span different
: organizations and geographical locations. Business-to-business transactions
: will be the new wave in electronic commerce. To support such functions,
: information systems need to be scalable. A new breed of information modeling
: methods and methodologies needs to be engineered to support these new endeavors.
:
: EMMSAD'00 will provide a platform for researchers and practitioners to share and
: discuss theories, research methodologies, and research findings. We welcome
: submissions on theoretical and/or empirical evaluation of modeling methods and
: methodologies related to:
:
: * Scalable Enterprise Systems
: * Unified Modeling Language (UML)
: * Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
: * Knowledge Management Systems
: * Component-based Software Engineering
: * Electronic Commerce/Business
: * Web-based Information Systems
: * Method Engineering
: * Metamodeling
: * Internet Database
: * Data Warehousing
: * Data Mining
: * Bioinformatics
: * Health Information Systems
: * Geographical Information Systems
:
: We are particularly interested in research papers that directly address the
: theme of this workshop. Evaluation of new software development approaches such
: as UML is strongly encouraged. Research methodologies involving case studies,
: action research, and experience reports are welcome.
:
: Important Dates:
:
: Deadline for papers (received): February 20, 2000
: Notification of paper acceptance: April 1, 2000
: Deadline for camera-ready copies: May 1, 2000
:
: Submission Guidelines:
:
: The workshop accepts two types of submissions - Completed Research and
: Research-In-Progress. Completed research papers should include analysis of data
: and discussion on research findings. Research-in-progress papers report on
: research that is well under way with preliminary results available at the time
: of the conference.
:
: Please use the following format for your submissions:
: * For Completed Research submissions, the paper should not exceed 5,000 words
: (excluding references and appendices). Top papers in this category will be
: recommended for journal publication or for inclusion as book chapters.
: * For Research-In-Progress submissions, the paper should not exceed 2,000 words
: (excluding references and appendices).
: * Include a cover page with title of paper as well as the authors' names,
: affiliations, phones, faxes, and email addresses. The total number of words in
: the paper (excluding cover page, tables, and references) and the submission
: category (i.e., Completed Research or Research-In-Progress) should be indicated
: on the cover page.
: * The second page should begin with the title of the paper followed by an
: abstract of no more than 150 words. The main text will follow the abstract.
: This is to facilitate the blind review process.
: * Use 1.5 or double spacing (except for references), and fonts no smaller than
: 11-point.
:
: Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Email your article as an
: attachment to mis-kengsiau(a)unlnotes.unl.edu. Please send electronic submissions
: in Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or PDF format.
