: Monday 10th - Wednesday 12th April 2000
: Crowne Plaza Midland Hotel, Manchester, UK
:
: ***VERY IMPORTANT DATES***
: Submission Deadline: December 6th, 1999
: Report Deadline: December 16th, 1999
: Notification/Comments: January 10th, 2000
: Final Papers due: February 21st, 2000
:
: Building on the success of PACLP99, held in London, UK, PACLP 2000 will
: showcase innovative business solutions that Constraint technologies and
: Logic Programming can provide in key industrial and commercial areas
: such as Planning, Scheduling, Transportation, Distribution, The
: Intelligent Internet and Expert Systems.
:
: Of particular interest are papers that describe the general use of
: Constraint technologies and Logic Programming, rather than the
: traditional close up description of one application. For instance, this
: could be a survey on the specific usage of a technology in a business
: area or demographic part of the world.
:
: Also included are streams to demonstrate and expand the practicality and
: effectiveness of recent lines of research such as integration of
: multiple solvers, generic problem modelling and tackling of ill-defined
: real-world constraint problems. The integration of solvers from
: different paradigms, such as constraint programming, mathematical
: programming, Operational Research techniques and stochastic techniques
: (Tabu Search, Genetic Algorithms, Simulated Annealing) is emerging as a
: practical means to tackle large scale combinatorial optimization
: problems effectively. Also most real-world problems are ill-defined in
: nature. Their solving is not just about computing an optimal solution
: but building an incremental and interactive decision support tool that
: identifies and resolves the ill-defined components. Practical and
: effective solutions that illustrate the hybridization of techniques, the
: modelling and handling of uncertainty in real-world constraint problems
: are most welcome.
:
: Suggested topics include:
: Survey with respect to an application area
: Evaluation and comparison of approaches
: Solutions using multiple solving techniques
: Hybrid solver configurations
: Modelling and solving of ill-defined applications

:
: ECIS 2000 - 8th European Conference on Information Systems
: Vienna, Austria, July 3-5, 2000
:
: Call for papers for the track
:
: RETAILING
:
: Conference Web Page: http://ecis2000.wu-wien.ac.at
:
: PAPER SUBMISSION DEADLINE: November 15, 1999
:
: OBJECTIVES
:
: In the course of the transition from industrial to service economies the
: challenges for the institutional retail companies increase. The competition
: between retail enterprises demands as well efficient logistics as a high
: flexibility and individuality in the market presence. These challenges can
: only be met by adaptable, integrated information systems, that
: support the business processes of retail enterprises in a sufficient way.
: The retail track of the ECIS 2000 Conference is intended to give researchers
:
: and practitioners a platform to share issues and experiences on retail
: companies on their way into the 21st century. Global networks and shorter
: product life cycles force retail companies to adapt to new markets in
: an ever faster fashion. Information management is becoming increasingly
: important in addition to the already optimised physical distribution of
: goods.
: The transition of retail companies from mediators of physical goods to
: information mediators is only one development that will affect the way
: we will look at retail companies in the future.
:
: Information systems and their application play a major role in today's
: retail companies ranging from the standardised merchandise information
: systems on the one hand to the application of specialised data mining tools
: to extract customer behaviour patterns from POS scanner data on the other
: hand. Future retail information systems will be more complex than
: traditional
: merchandise information systems, because they have to cover the functions of
:
: economical-administrative tasks, controlling and enterprise planning as
: well.
:
: The electronic communication between retailer and supplier via EDIFACT or
: EDI has recently been enhanced by web-based front-ends for the placement of
: customer orders. This forces retail companies, to optimise their processes
: across functional boundaries, because the importance of vertical and
: horizontal
: co-operations is increasing. Inter-organisational systems, Efficient
: Consumer
: Response (ECR), Supply Chain Management and Electronic Commerce are only a
: few of the challenges that future retail companies will have to meet.
:
: TRACK THEME AND SUGGESTED TOPICS
:
: The general topic of the retailing track will focus on Retail companies
: beyond
: the year 2000 - the information challenge. The organisers want to
: solicit innovative presentations dealing with innovative applications of
: information systems in retail companies, changes in current retail
: information
: systems and changes in the information management of retail companies.
:
: Contributions in form of research papers, research in progress reports
: and case studies describing experiences or ideas within retail enterprises
: are
: invited - but not limited - to the following issues:
:
: Electronic commerce and Internet shopping
:
: The growth of the internet and related technologies lead to several aspects
: relevant to retail companies:
: - How do processes in the value chain change through the use of internet
: technologies?
: - Does the internet provide us with new markets for new products and how can
: these
: opportunities be identified?
: - Which taxation concepts for internet commerce exist and how will they
: affect
: the way business is conducted on the internet?
:
: Information management in retail companies
:
: - What is the role of information management in retail companies?
: - Does traditional information management face new tasks in retail
: companies?
:
: Retail information systems
:
: The information systems of retail enterprises have a severe impact on the
: company's ability to adjust to changes in market and technology issues.
: This track shall help to answer questions, such as:
: - Are 20th century retail information systems still fit for the 21st
: century?
: - What is the impact of new trends in information systems, such as
: componentware,
: data warehousing, JAVA, object orientation, workflow management, on the
: architecture
: and functionality of retail information systems?
:
: Workflow-Management in retail companies
:
: Interest in workflow-management is increasing rapidly and a lot of
: installations are on the way or in the pilot phase. Questions to be answered
:
: in this track include:
: - Which business processes in retail companies are suitable for workflow
: automation?
: - Which systems have been implemented and how did the introduction work?
: - Did the introduction of workflow systems lead to the benefits expected?
:
: New concepts for logistics
:
: The distribution of physical goods will remain a major task for retail
: companies.
: Concepts such as Efficient Consumer Response (ECR), Supply Chain Management,
:
: Virtual enterprises and city logistics lead to the question, if the
: traditional
: concepts for logistics are still applicable in the future.
:
: Business to business process integration between supplier, retail company
: and customer
: Researchers predict a shift in the value chain between manufacturers,
: retailers and
: customers. Questions to be answered in this respect are e.g.:
: - How is the new distribution of roles within the value chain from supplier
: to customer?
: - Does the manufacturer provide the materials requirement planning for the
: retailer
: or does the customer provide direct input for the manufacturer's materials
: requirement
: planning?
: - What are the legal aspects of business to business process integration?
:
: Data mining and knowledge discovery in retail data
:
: In connection with data warehousing technology, data mining concepts have
: grown
: from research prototypes to real world applications. New technologies for
: data mining
: and their practical application in retailing are only two of the potential
: topics
: for this track.
: - Does the prediction of customer behaviour lead to a change in business
: processes
: or are the results still not operational enough to be applied in
: day-to-day-business?
: - How can data mining approaches be integrated in the controlling structure
: of
: retail enterprises?
:
: IMPORTANT DEADLINES
:
: Paper submission deadline: November 15, 1999
: Acceptance decisions: January 30, 2000

: CALL
:
: FEAST 2000 International workshop on
: FEEDBACK AND EVOLUTION IN SOFTWARE AND BUSINESS PROCESSES
:
: London, U.K.
: July 10 - 12, 2000
:
:
: WORKSHOP SCOPE, INTENT AND THEMES
: The FEAST 2000 workshop will bring together practitioners and academics with an interest in evolution and/or feedback in software, organisational and business processes. It will critically examine and discuss results achieved in relevant research, their potential significance and practical applications, identify possible solutions to emerging problems and seek to generate new ideas, directions and methods for future investigation. Themes of interest include:
: * the role and impact of feedback mechanisms and interactions on software and business processes
: * dynamics of software and business evolution and their interactions
: * software and business process improvement in the context of feedback
:
: The workshop will focus on these themes with individual contributions addressing topics within them. An initial list of topics will be found at http://www-dse.doc.ic.ac.uk/~mml/f2000/topics
:
: Studies of evolution and feedback in the software process were stimulated by the 1993 formulation of the FEAST hypothesis, a sequence of three FEAST workshops held at Imperial College, London, in 1994-5 and research projects FEAST/1 (1996-1998) and FEAST/2 (1999-2001), funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research council (EPSRC). The full impact and potential of feedback phenomena remains to be investigated. Recent interest has tended to concentrate on "how" to implement software evolution. The complementary questions of "why" software evolution occurs, "what" are its attributes, characteristics, role and impact as explored in the FEAST projects, "how" it may be controlled and "how" it is embedded in the wider context of feedback in business processes, have received less attention. These questions are becoming increasingly important with the shift to multi-supplier environments, increasing integration of computer-supported organisational and business processes!
, user-involvement in these processes, globally distributed systems and growing interest in "re-use, components" and COTS-intensive software. To fully address the question of "how" and to increase mastery of such processes one must achieve at least some "understanding" of the "why" and the "what". The industrial viewpoint will be of particular interest.
:
: PARTICIPATION
: Participation by both industry and academia is expected. Participants will be selected on the basis of "position papers" or "extended abstracts" that are relevant to the above themes and questions. All accepted submissions will be made available on the web prior to the workshop, to provide background for discussion and some will be selected for presentation. It is intended to propose expansion of appropriate submissions into full papers for circulation at the workshop and for subsequent publication in a journal or proceedings. Active participation in the workshop and debate will be stimulated by keynote speakers.

: First Call for Papers
:
: The Seventh International Workshop on
: AGENT THEORIES, ARCHITECTURES, AND LANGUAGES
: (ATAL-2000)
:
: Boston, USA
: July 7-9, 2000
: (Held in conjunction with ICMAS'2000 and federated events)
:
: As we turn to a new millennium, intelligent agents are one of the most
: important recent developments in computer science. Agents are of
: interest in many important application areas, ranging from
: human-computer interaction to industrial process control. The ATAL
: workshop series aims to bring together researchers interested in the
: agent-level, micro aspects of agent technology. Specifically,
: ATAL-2000 will address issues such as theories of rational agency,
: software architectures for intelligent agents, methodologies and
: programming languages for realising agents, and software tools for
: applying and evaluating agent systems. ***Papers that consider
: macro-level, societal issues of agent-based systems are welcome *only*
: if they explicitly relate to the workshop themes***.
:
: ATAL-2000 will be held in conjunction with the ICMAS'2000 conference
: and a set of other agent-related workshops and tutorials. The
: ATAL-2000 proceedings will be formally published as volume seven of
: the Intelligent Agents series from Springer-Verlag.
:
: WORKSHOP THEMES
:
: As the title suggests, the workshop has three main themes:
:
: * AGENT THEORIES: What approaches (e.g., game theory, temporal/modal
: logic) are appropriate for agent theory? How do these approaches relate
: to one another?
:
: * AGENT ARCHITECTURES: What architectures are appropriate for autonomous
: agents? How can such architectures be given a formal semantics? How can
: different agent architectures be evaluated and compared? What
: methodologies can be used to build agent-based applications? How close
: are these methodologies to existing formal specification languages or
: object-oriented analysis and design methods?
:
: * AGENT LANGUAGES: What programming paradigms are most suitable for
: agents? How do agent-oriented languages differ from object-oriented and
: logic programming languages? What are efficient implementation
: mechanisms for these languages?
:
: In addition, ATAL-2000 will include two special paper tracks, and
: submissions are particularly welcome on these:
:
: * AUTONOMY - THEORY, DIMENSIONS, AND REGULATION: In 1947 Alan
: Turing, challenging Lady Lovelace's famous truism, said that our
: intention in building computers had been that of treating them
: like slaves, of giving them tasks that are so completely
: specified that the user may know at each instant what is being done.
: Until now he says, machines have been used only in this way; but must
: this remain the case forever?. Agents are, in fact, beyond Lady
: Lovelace's limits, and this comes precisely from their "autonomy": in
: learning, in directly accessing information from the world, in
: planning and problem solving, in taking initiatives, in having their
: own goals, etc. Autonomy is a foundational notion for agents, but
: what exactly is it? How do we characterise it? Are there different
: dimensions of autonomy and measures of degrees of autonomy? Can we
: distinguish between autonomy with respect to the user, with respect to
: other agents, or with respect to a "role" in an organisation? How is
: autonomy related to initiative and responsibility? How can we
: control, intervene on, and adjust agents' autonomy during their
: collective activity in order to obtain the desired services or global
: result? What is the tradeoff between autonomy, trust, and lack of
: control?
:
: * AGENT DEVELOPMENT TOOLS:
: This track seeks to examine the state of the art (or lack thereof) in
: tools for developing agents and agent systems. In this context,
: "tools" include complete agent programming environments, testbeds,
: environment simulators, component libraries, and specification
: tools. Relevant issues to examine include: How do existing development
: tools compare and differ? How does a tool suggest/support/enforce a
: particular design methodology, theory of agency, architecture, or
: agent language? Can agent development tools go beyond collections or
: libraries of pre-built functionality? Why, as more and more
: development tools become available, do most systems seem to be
: developed without any specialised tools (something more than "Not
: Invented Here")? Is there any evidence that agent development tools
: actually increase programmer productivity and/or the quality of the
: resulting systems? As we move towards the era of more "fielded"
: systems and prototypes, what is the continuing role of testbeds and
: simulators? What are the differences in development tools oriented
: toward the research community versus the agent application community,
: and are we already seeing a significant lag between theory and
: practice? Are there obvious development tools, that are unique to
: agent-based system development, that have yet to be built? Survey
: papers and case studies that focus on how a development tool directly
: contributed to an application are also appropriate.
:
: Papers that cross theme boundaries are of particular interest. An
: example would be a paper that demonstrated how a particular agent
: architecture embodied some theory of agency, or what benefits a
: particular agent language can bring in a specific application domain.
:
: SUBMISSION DETAILS
:
: Those wishing to participate in the workshop should submit an original
: research paper of up to 5000 words (approximately 13 pages maximum) to

: as well as IS of course.
:
: Track Theme and Suggested Topics
:
: A cross-cultural perspective is an aspect of the track. Ideas which
: incorporate international comparisons and cultural issues
: generally, whether at the organizational, societal or transnational
: level are sought in any aspect of the theme. The following topics
: are, however, of particular interest:
:
: * The relationship between the use of IT and organizational
: innovation
: * IT (inc. e-business and KM) policy and strategy at national,
: company or indivudal levels
: * International academic networks/exchanges:
: examples/possibilities
: * Interaction with practice (relevance of research, dissemination,
: co-operation with practitioner and user communities)
: * Review of IS and related research in the past decade: topics,
: trends, experiences
: * The IS research agenda (in the context of this track) for the
: next decade
: * Creating, managing and disseminating knowledge in different
: organizational, inter-organizational and institutional contexts
: * The global information infrastructure and its impacts, such as:
: transnational institutions and 'computer supported knowledge
: management'
: * ERP systems, the management of knowledge and innovation:
: a contradiction in terms?
: * Legislative and regulatory issues
: * Implications for future teaching/learning in IS, Organization
: Studies and related fields, including changing skill
: requirements.

: REVIEWED PAPER ABSTRACTS
:
: The Role of Training in Preparing End Users to Learn Related Software
: CONRAD SHAYO, California State University, San Bernardino
: LORNE OLFMAN, Claremont Graduate University
:
: The aim of this paper is to determine what types of formal training methods
: can provide appropriate "mapping via training" of a new but related
: database management system (DBMS) given that "mapping via analogy" is also
: taking place. To this end, trainees' existing mental models were measured
: prior to being exposed to one of three training methods. Training methods
: were varied in an experimental setting across two dimensions: the training
: task context (generic and/or relevant), and the number of DBMSs
: demonstrated (one and/or two). Outcomes were measured in terms of learning
: performance and perceptions of ability to transfer skills to a new but
: related DBMS. The results indicate that both task context and the number of
: software packages learned are important training variables that influence
: trainees' mental models of the software, their transfer self-efficacy
: expectation, and their perceptions about the usefulness of the training.
:
: The Impact of Task and Cognitive Style on Decision-Making Effectiveness
: Using a Geographic Information System
: MARTIN CROSSLAND, Southwest MO State University
: RICHARD T. HERSCHEL, St. Joseph's University
: WILLIAMS PERKINS, Indiana University
: JOSEPH SCUDDER, Northern Illinois University
:
: A laboratory experiment is conducted to investigate how two cognitive style
: factors, field dependence and need-for-cognition, relate to decision-making
: performance for a spatial task. The intent of the investigation is to
: establish a methodology for measuring cognitive fit for spatial tasks. The
: experiment assesses the performance of 142 subjects on a site location task
: where the problem complexity and availability of a geographic information
: system are manipulated on two levels. Significant relationships are found
: for both field dependence and need-for-cognition with the two dependent
: performance variables, solution time and percent error.
:
: Schools of Thought in Research into End-User Computing Success
: ROGER W. HARRIS, UNIMAS - University Malaysia Sarawak
:
: This article analyses the last decade of research into the casual factors
: of end-user computing (EUC) success. The last ten years of EUC research are
: characterized within an analysis of 16 studies, which demonstrates the
: variety of influences that researchers have postulated to contribute
: towards EUC success made by the behaviour of individuals, one is based on
: the characteristics of an end-user application, and another is based on the
: characteristics of the organization in which EUC occurs. The analysis
: provides researchers and practitioners with a road-map for defining and
: creating the conditions necessary for success with EUC. It is expected to
: assist future research in identifying gaps in current knowledge as well as
: facilitating a coherent progression of contribution to the field.
: Practitioners can use it to identify those factors that contribute most
: relevance to their achievement of success with EUC within their own
: contexts. A framework and agenda are suggested for future research.
:
: INDUSTRY AND PRACTICE - PAPER ABSTRACTS
:
: Shifting Paradigms: The New Informated Business Architecture
: ANDREW TARGOWSKI & THOMAS CAREY, Western Michigan University
:
: This paper explores shifting business paradigms and presents a new
: informated business architecture for global competition. It explores four
: graphic models of paradigm shifts in the scope of shifting: power,
: strategic resources, enterprise structure and management control. Finally a
: new set of post -modern business rules is offered.
:
: The playing field for business has increasingly expanded and now includes
: the electronic global village. The village is less polar and more driven by
: market demand rather than the military industrial complex. The key
: strategic resources are the knowledge workers who work locally but think
: and profit globally, within a border less enterprise. The new paradigm
: requires imagination and applied knowledge within a vastly shorter time
: span. Business is effective only to the extent that its knowledge workers
: participate in the electronic global village.
:
: Book Review- Information Warfare and Security
: EDWARD SZEWCZAK, Canisius College
:
: This review offers a look at Information Warfare and Security' by Dorothy
: E. Denning, Addison- Wesley, Reading MA. Copyright 1999; ISBN 0201433036;
: 544 pages-
:
: Excerpts: "One glance at the table of contents reveals a wide range of
: topics from computer fraud to spam wars, data diddling, packet sniffers,
: Van Eck receptors, viruses, digital signatures an national encryption
: policy. Lest the reader think that the book is just another dull reference
: work, may I say that I found reading through it both fascinatingly thorough
: and thoroughly fascinating."
:
: "I should mention that there is much more to the book than just topics and
: instances. For example
: the Introduction presents a theory of information warfare, and there is a
: strong concern for national security from beginning to end.....All in all,
: I believe this book would be a welcome addition to any professional or
: university library. It may also serve as the basis for a course in
: information security. I recommend it highly."
:
: EDITORIAL NOTE
:
: If you are presently conducting research or have an interest in the end
: user computing area and you would like to get a free copy of the present
: issue of the journal, please let me know. Please remember that I will only
: have a few sample copies to distribute and, therefore, I may not be able to
: satisfy everyone's request (I was able to satisfy everyone's request for a
